I generally avoid Vietnamese restaurants that specialize in Northern Vietnamese cuisine, because I don't like the taste nor smell of fish sauce, and Northern Vietnamese cuisine is usually heavy on the fish sauce and the fish sauce tends to be more pungent and intense. I realize this is a generalization, but I usually just stick to Southern Vietnamese cuisine to be safer. However, Ha Noi Pho is super popular in Orleans, so I figured I'd give it a try. I had dinner there with my mom and I specifically asked for no fish sauce in my meal. My mom did not make this request and said her pho had an unpleasant fish sauce smell to it :( Mom doesn't like fish sauce either, lol. I got the grilled beef and spring rolls vermicelli $11.95 and my mom got the small pho with rare beef and well-done beef ($8.50). I was amazed at how tender the beef was. It was really flavourful too. It was not as lean as I like, but definitely not as fatty/gristly as some places. The spring rolls were hot and crispy, and filled with carrots, vermicelli and ground meat. I was a bit disappointed that the wrapper was the wheat-based wrappers and not the more traditional rice paper wrappers. However, I was pleased that I got 2 spring rolls, as most places only give you one. My dish came with shredded lettuce, 3 slices of cucumbers and some shredded pickled carrots. Vegetables were fresh. This dish usually comes with fish sauce, so I definitely said "hold the fish sauce!" My mom had pho, and pho usually does not contain fish sauce, so mom didn't make the "no fish sauce" request. Well, surprise! The pho here has fish sauce! Mom was not happy. She was also disappointed with the well-done beef. She thought it was mostly fat. She did like the rare beef though, which was tender and lean. Service was very polite and friendly. The restaurant has funky decor. There are little figurines of women in traditional Vietnamese dress around the restaurant, as well as vases, a large decorative fan, and other knick-knacks. They even have a bicycle and a parasol over the entrance. It's in a plaza, so lots of free parking. If I were to base the rating solely on my food, I would give it 4 stars, but I need to knock off a star due to my mom's dissatisfaction. This is a restaurant that can leave you with mixed feelings. I've ordered before, but last week was the first time we dined in. Personally, I'm not a fan of the interior - I find it too dark and bland even for a restaurant in a plaza. It's almost as if they prefer more takeouts than customers inside. Service was a mixed bag. It took quite a while before we got acknowledged and even given water, but on the other hand, the lady was very polite and the food was ready very quickly. We ordered different dishes from rice to noodles and pho. The portions are quite generous. I couldn't finish mine. They're a bit heavy on the sauce, but I liked it. Horrible service. We got seated right away, but as we were taking off our jackets, the waitress comes up to us and ask us if we're ready to order. Clearly we were not. After that, she chose to ignore us and serve everybody around us, including the people who came in after us. We finally flagged her down, but she had quite the attitude. We have a couple of go-to places for pho on the east side but Ha Noi Pho is the one we return to regularly. The place is clean, the service is good, and their food is excellent . Their broth is the best we've tried in the Orléans area and you can get extra broth, meat or noodles for a little extra. Two thumbs up here - give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Going back to the hit and miss, For example, i order for take out some chicken pho and i had big piece that were really chewy. Was just so-so. I had a spring roll appetizer and a #68, Coconut beef, I think it was. Lots of celery, green peppers and a sauce much saltier than I would have liked. Nice waitress. Friendly, but not hovering. And this might be silly, but I hate not getting a bill - Waitress never brought a bill. You stop at the cash on the way out, tell her what you had and she tells you the total. I like to eyeball the bill especially when with a group. One of the better Vietnamese restaurants in the area but I would not necessarily compare it to Ottawa restaurants. The menu expands to more than Pho. I did not try the Pho as I went for #34 (bun tom nuong/chao tom) which is the vermicelli entree with the shrimp paste on a sugar cane stick (see pic). It was very good overall although it could have used a side of fresh basil and cilantro. Service was attentive. Seems more of a lunch place. Went around 8P and it was pretty empty but I hear it is busy during the day. Overall a very good restaurant if you need a Vietnamese fix and do not want to go all the way to Ottawa. read more

I use to love to eat here, till a recent visit with a friend , as she was leaving to her car she realized she forgot her phone in the restaurant. When she went back in to ask if they had seen her phone on the table, the waiter said he hadn't seen it and even suggested with a smirk that maybe she never even came in the resto with her phone. The only other couple who was sitting at the resto spoke up and said "actually, I noticed you pick up an iPhone with a pink case when you were cleaning her table off and you gave it to the other employee who was working". When the customer said that, all of a sudden the waiter and the other guy working said that another girl had just came in to pick up the phone saying that she also forgot her phone at the resto earlier that day. She told him that was impossible seeing as she was out of the resto for no more then 5 minutes, and he replied basically saying 'well that's not really my problem". So she told him okay, well I'm gonna call the cops. So she did right in front of him. This must have shook the employees because they then started pretending to look around for it, the other ones on the phone speaking in his language and keeps saying the word 'iPhone'. He then told her that the girl who 'picked up her phone' is a regular, so next time she comes in, he will tell her she took the wrong phone. Then sure enough, the next day he called her friend to explain to them how nice people from Orleans are because the 'girl' came in the next day after realizing the phone wasn't hers. This is a Vietnamese Pho place that you'd want to have a romantic evening with someone who wants to try out Pho without having to go to a hole in the wall somewhere at Chinatown. The decor is new Asian, with a red bicycle at the door that evokes the image of a long haired vietnamese girl biking down a dirt path. Inside, the atmosphere is more suitable for you to sit down, eat and chat than the typical pho places where they're more spartan and prefers turnover once you're done your noodles. I tried this place back in December, when it had just opened recently, and I had Vermicelli with Chicken. The Chicken was cut thinner, but compared to other restaurants, they didn't give me less. The unfortunate thing is that although the chicken cooks faster because it's thinner, you'd be missing the grill marks that you've grown to expect for this dish. Also, if you're looking for classic pho, you'd expect this to be served in a big Asian bowl; the cutlery here matches the decor too. Despite the cosmetic differences, the dish's still authentic. Since they're catering to more of the high end, it is a bit pricer than what I'm used to. I was also particularly hungry that day, so I ordered a snack out of the appetizer menu. The staff's new, and the guy thought I wanted the check. When he found out I was gonna order more, he apologized profusely. The female waitress was either ditzy or overworked, since there was 4 guys on the floor, one manning the till, but only 2 was actively serving at a place that they could use 3 waiters. Perhaps they have sorted this out after the new opening. The snack that I ordered was sliced pork wrapped in rice paper - normally my favourite treat before pho. The difference between Ha Noi Pho and others is that they have left a little surprise in it. They used green granny apple in with the sliced pork. The pork and the sauce that comes with is typically very sweet, and the naturalsourness from the green apples is the perfect complement. It was a great time that I had there, except that their alcohol license was pending. If they have wine, it would be a great place to spend a romantic evening. read more

Great vermicelli dishes with your choice of grilled chicken, pork or beef. We have had this dish many many many times and the quality is always consistently good. Pho is a solid choice too. Some of their other Chinese and Thai dishes are not as good quality. We love the spring rolls, although at times they have been served a bit past their prime.
