Idk what all these other reviews are talking about but I love the pho here. I always get the Pho Ga(chicken) and it never disappoints me. You can only get the Pho Ga in a large which is fine by me. It's very tasty and I always have leftovers for the next day. Also, they give a nice amount of chicken. Customer service is good. read more

During the weekends, the kids seem to run the front end of this restaurant. Perhaps it's because the kids speak better American than the older folk working the kitchen or it's easier than finding a babysitter. Regardless, one of the teens was berating a kid "you so stupid, I wonder what college you going to. You know you're a retard. Your parents should have taken birth control." Then the girl stormed out leaving another girl trying to comfort the kid. I think the teen was around 13 and the kid was around 8-10. That was one incident out of several. Bottom Line - the Pho here is good. Maybe even better than good. I am by no means a pho connoisseur but I know what I like and I like this pho. It's all about the broth and Pho 89 nailed it. It's just delicious. A little bite, a little kick, not too flowery, not too bland. Just tasty. The beef was really good and so were the noodles but the broth was the star. Everything else was background noise albeit tasty background noise. On a different note, the seating was a little awkward as no one was at the front to greet me when I walked in so I had to wait until someone poked their head out of the kitchen. And communication was more of a smile, nod, and point. But I got over that as soon as I tasted pho. I thoroughly enjoyed my lunch and I'd definitely return. Good price and darn good pho! read more

We had a bad experience here. Our first indication that on a 7 PM on a Friday night, there was NO ONE in the restaurant, nor did anyone seem to be picking up orders. The large table we sat at had no napkins, chopsticks or cutlery. The waitress argued with us about the menu - several of my party ordered Thai Iced Tea, and got hot tea instead. Food came out very slowly, so that people who got their food first were finished by the time the last guest was served. Some dishes were very salty (salt and pepper tofu) and some unevenly cooked (beef with noodle had both burnt and raw pieces of beef). I agree that the spring rolls could use a little something like carrots and mint but for $2.50 they're not bad. I had the ginger chicken which had a crazy amount of onion and a lovely amount of ginger. I mean it had that fresh kick that I love instead of tasting like the ginger was an afterthought. I didn't want to offend my friend or have to stick my head out of the window for the car ride home, so I left a bunch of the onion on the plate. I am a pho virgin but I tasted some of his and realized that I should have gotten some. Some of their items seemed a bit high priced-$10 for fried rice but since the Asian selections are so limited in the area, I won't complain too much. From the moment you walk in you can see that the place is decorated with Chinese decoration and I have no problem with that but it's a Vietnamese food place so I wasn't expecting that. We ordered our Pho and the broth was just that beef broth, no salt, no spices only pure strong concentrated beef broth flavor, even the tripe had an odd taste. I usually eat my pho without anything but the greens and bean sprouts but this time I had to loaded up with hoisting sauce and Sriracha, couldn't even add salt because it was stuck like a brick. I can only call it what it is, an imitation of pho, I've eaten at many pho restaurants and although they vary in flavors from place to place they are still delicious, this wasn't. We tried to eat it but then my husband found a hair in his soup and I had not even eaten half and I just couldn't keep eating after that (picture attached). When my husband told the lady behind the counter, she asked "why didn't you tell me when you got the soup" he answered "how was I supposed to know it had hair? I just found it and told you" she ended up charging for 1 soup which is $8.50 for a small, we paid and then left hungry, so we just went to Sardis. The next day we drove all the way to Rockville to Pho 75 paid $6.75 for each pho bowl left happy and satisfied for our craving. I don't recommend this imitation of Pho, they had other foods but I'm not trying my luck so beware. read more

Now maybe this is because I was first introduced to pho at this restaurant, or maybe it's because the family running the restaurant loved our group, but I love this little place. For a while, we were eating there almost weekly, though I have recently moved and unfortunately will not be able to stop in as frequently. I am anything but an expert when it comes to Vietnamese food, but I never had anything that I disliked. I tried 7 or 8 of the different pho types, but B4 will always be my favorite. The rice dishes.....the F category is all very tasty. The rice vermicelli, in the E section is also good, though the one time I had it, I was starving; it just wasn't enough. I followed it with a small bowl of pho, much to the delight of the staff. What Pho '89 may lack in presentation, it makes up for in sheer authenticity and superb quality. This place has real character. It's a humble place, run by a husband and wife, with some of the younger family members pitching in part time in the evenings and on weekends, waiting tables. They're serious about their food's quality, and it shows. As a regular, I have yet to come by the restaurant and not see at least one of the owners working in the kitchen. If you get pho noodle soup at this restaurant, and on the off chance you don't like it, you can rest assured, because you won't like pho anywhere else. This place is hands down the best I've had, and every place I've been to since just makes me want to come back to Pho '89. I highly recommend their spring OR summer rolls, and #B12 is my go-to. Good meat vs. noodle ratio in Pho. Prices are standard. Cons: They ran out of the mixed bean and jelly drink. They ran out of the soy bean drink. The small pho portion was ridiculously small. It was a kids size. They close early (8:30 PM). At a little before 8:30pm, the owner sat at one of the nearby tables and eyed us down with the dirtiest look. We were still eating and had to practically shove the food down our throats. It was very uncomfortable. They should consider extending their hours until 9pm at least. Or stop letting people come in after 8pm. He seemed so angry that we were there and was rushing us out. But after rushing to eat our food, he took forever in bringing out our check. The bubble tea machine was broken! I was asking for it without being blended but I don't think they understood. Maybe that's impossible? Other places have the blended and non blended teas. The tap water looked brown, so I got the vietnamese cold coffee with condensed milk which was AMAZING and ended up giving me palpitations, lol. The broth was OK, not as good as Pho on contee road, and the meat appears frozen. The chicken and rice dish was very good, i would come back just for that and the coffee. So I was in the area and wanted some Pho. I saw this place, so I decided to give place a try. I ordered shrimp pho.... they ONLY had beef broth no chicken broth. I get the pho....paid 12.99!! The shrimp were small and clearly straight from the freezer, the hoisin and sriracha sauce was put in the same container, the condiments (bean sprouts, jalapeños, and limes were OLD and withered. This place is not good, based on my one visit. It may have been an off day, so check the other reviews and adjust accordingly. The place was clean, and the people were acceptably friendly, if not overly so. Service was so-so. I was thirsty and it took a LONG time to get my first refill of water. After that, they were quicker. They were slow when I went - around 1:45 on a Sunday afternoon. I was alone, and i ordered a summer roll and bun thit nuong - BBQ pork on vermicelli. The food took about 20 minutes, which is way too long for this simple and small an order, imo. Also, they brought me the summer roll, an appetizer from the appetizer menu, at the same time as the entree. Now to the actual food: the summer roll was limp, contained hardly any vegetables, and one tiny shrimp. It might better have been called a vermicelli roll. Bun thit nuong is my go-to Vietnamese dish, and it was just not good. The pork is supposed to be barbecued, and the sport was clearly nothing like that. It was sautéed, and the flavor was all wrong. Did not have Vietnamese spices that I am used to having for this dish. I am from Houston, so it's possible that there are different regional expectations about how this should taste. But, again, there were few vegetables, and the sauce was flavorless. So it was a bowl of noodles and sautéed pork. Not recommended. I gave it 2 stars because it was clean, and because I'm allowing for regional differences. I won't be back. read more

This has become my backup pho for when I'm too tired to head to Pho 88 and am in the vicinity of Laurel. The broth is good.. but they are quite skimpy with the noodles and beef.. for the price $6.75 for a small or $7.75 for large you can get better portions and pho at Pho 88 in Beltsville. Also, they don't filter their tap water... I know it's free water.. but getting a Britta or something to filter the tap water would really help me enjoy the Pho more.. no one wants to taste metallicy/bitter flouride/chemically taste to their pho after taking a sip of the water here. I'm not sure if this is their thing though because I did end up buying a drink mid-meal just so I could have something to wash down my pho with.... read more

Came with my wife while attending a local event. She ordered shrimp vermacilli and I ordered the tofu with iced coffee. It was AMAZING. The coffee was perfect: simple, strong, and sweet. I went there for lunch and ordered the B-15 which is the seafood soup. It was ok, the only REAL reason that I went there is because I had to get an oil change across the street. I was a little worried when I notice that my feet were sticking to the floor....but the customer service was pretty good. Everyone was fairly friendly. This place warrants a 1 star because of the mediocre service and the quality of the food. We got there a little after 100pm and there were only 3 other parties there. The person that was taking our orders was a 10 year old kid or younger. Although we give her credit for taking our orders, we would've liked someone older taken our orders. We ordered 1 order of spring rolls and 2 combination pho bowls. They didn't have coconut juice like their menu said they did. The party that came after us got their spring rolls before we did, which was funny because after they received theirs we NEVER got our order. The combination pho bowls were up not to par at all. The broth was ok, the noodles were crumbling like they were old, and the meat wasn't as much as other places we've been. When we went to pay, we were gonna get charged for the spring rolls but we told the owner that we didn't get any and she seemed surprised. I'm guessing it was her kid who was taking the orders because she started to scold her in front of us. The kid went to the trash to get the order slip and embarassed her mom and told her she did write down the order and that her mom didn't bother making it. Needless to say, we are never coming back here again. People who rated this place a 3 star have no idea how pho is supposed to really taste like. Take a drive down to Gaithersburg to Pho & Grill and that place comes close to it. read more
