Super cute ambiance, maybe the cutest pho place I've ever been to. But what I'd give 6 stars for if I could, is the service. Our server was super nice and gave great recommendations. But the owner came over and welcomed us because she knew it was our first time in. And then came to the front to say good bye to us. The space is clean and bright, with a casual but polished feel. Service was a clear strength. Staff were professional and polite, with quick seating, prompt ordering, fast food delivery, and multiple check-ins to make sure everything was going well. It all felt efficient without feeling rushed. The menu covers familiar Vietnamese ground: pho and other noodle soups, bánh mì sandwiches, and standard Vietnamese plates. Nothing overly experimental, but a solid, approachable selection. I ordered bún bò Huế. This was a good rendition of the dish. Not especially memorable, but certainly enjoyable and something I would eat again. The broth had the right level of spice for me, with a noticeable but balanced kick. The main downside was the meat, which was a bit dry and almost chalky in texture. At $23, it sits firmly on the high end for a Vietnamese noodle dish. That said, a friend picked up the tab this time. Had lunch the other day with a friend and decided to try pho 88 out. I started with a Thai iced tea, my favorite drink to get. We then ordered an appetizer of wings, which had the perfect amount of garlic and fish sauce. I could have made a meal just out of that! For my main dish I ordered the chicken curry. On the menu it had a chili pepper next to it saying it was a spicy dish so I ordered it. I have to say it was very flavorful, but there was little spice to the dish. Pho 88 for lunch at Old Mill was a perfect place to have lunch after a long drive into town. We sat outside on the patio on a beautiful day. The three of us ordered different things. The menu is great with lots of choices! I chose a plate entree of grilled lemon grass chicken served with a shrimp skewer and rice. It was plated beautifully and the flavors were delicious. I really loved the shrimp and the chicken was really good too. Their rice was perfect! Great plate of food. My hubby and son both got a bahn mi sandwich, one pork and one chicken and my hubby loved that it had lots of chicken. He said it was one of the best he's had anywhere. Service from Nate was especially impressive. He was friendly and attentive and very helpful. The restaurant inside was very nice and beautifully decorated. Newish Vietnamese restaurant in the Old Mill shopping district occupying the space formerly hosting the Mill Works Pub and the Boxwood Kitchen before that. - Vegetarian pho: big serving, flavorful broth, nice ingredients. I find veggie pho sometimes lacking in flavor due to the weaker broth but this is a nice version. - Tofu vermicelli noodle bowl: Not a huge serving as with the pho but big enough to need a to-go box. Very tasty. I added hot chili oil to kick it up a notch but it was good even before that. The space is much as it was with Mill Works Pub, which I found to be well arranged. There's a wall of comfortable booths, a few other tables and a banquet facing the bar, which has stools. Mobility challenged folks will find a seat. Full selection of adult beverages including specialty cocktails. Didn't try any of those. Rather went with one of the big bottles of Tsingtao beer. One of our group wanted a decaf tea but there was none on the menu. Service was top tier. Not loud at all. Noisy restaurants are an instant no-go for me. Prices are reasonable. Everything is expensive these days so you either pay the going prices or watch your favorite restaurant fail. read more

Get the Pho Special Combo. This place has by far exceeded my expectations. It's hard when you come from places that have been setting the standard for Vietnamese food. It's been hard to find anything comparable. However, this is very close. The Pho Special had a good balance of noodles to meat ratio. The broth is flavorful and the side of fresh crisp veggies are a great addition to the dish. You can add as little or as much as you want to it. It's very good. I also had the stir-fry beef vermicelli. The meat is nice and tender with a good sweet soy umami flavor. They serve it with a side of fish sauce too. If you're not familiar with the taste I would suggest tasting it lightly first before dumping it into the dish. It may ruin your experience if you haven't had that flavor before. I love fish sauce so it actually adds another depth to noodles. Try it, you might like it. The customer service is top notched, they are pet friendly with outdoor seating and they can provide you with water and pup food by request. The view is amazing while enjoying your meal and they give you a very good amount of food. I could barely finish all my food but was very happy to take some home for later. Kudos to the team at Pho 88 for bringing authentic Vietnamese cuisine to the Old Mill District. I stopped by for lunch to check it out. They're currently doing a soft opening so don't expect them to have everything you want. The menu is extensive menu and includes Bun Bo Hue and Banh Xeo. Unfortunately for me, neither were available because they were both sold out from the night before. The owner tells me she is just as surprised as I was that so many people are asking for Banh Xeo. I defaulted to the classic bowl of pho. It's the dish I order to gauge whether or not I'll be back. The verdict? I'll definitely be back. The pho was solid. The broth was good and came with a hearty helping of noodles and meats. Of course it comes with all the veggie fixin's. Well, it was worth a shot, but I won't return. This place doesn't feel ready for prime time. Start with the layout, where so many tables are stuffed in that the servers can't even move around. They had a lot of servers, but it didn't matter -- I waited at least 5 mins at the hostess stand (all just to sit at the bar since I was solo) and then waited 10+ to put in an order. I had the vermicelli combo bowl. The only thing good I can say for it is that it was big and had a lot of meat in it. Other than that, what? Room temperature. Flavorless. Meats overcooked. This was a mistake in a town with a lot of good food. They are trying hard, but they have a long way to go. read more

At last! We have another option for Asian food at the Old Mill: Vietnamese! Unsurprisingly, if you're looking for an option for pho, this new restaurant is worth your time. Fresh, crisp ingredients and plentiful portions of noodles in hot soup are perfect comfort food on chilly Bend days. There are several pho options (chicken, beef, shrimp, vegetable, and a combo that includes brisket and tripe). I've tried the beef and chicken -- both are excellent. I'm partial to the chicken pho because I'm careful about my cholesterol , and this is a clean, low-fat option that wouldn't cause my cardiologist to have concern. But the restaurant's name may be deceiving. They offer a great deal more even for hot summer days, including superb bahn mi sandwiches on fresh rolls, vermicelli noodle bowls (heaped with noodles!), and rice plates, all with lemongrass chicken, beef, pork, and tofu options. And fun appetizers like salad rolls, shrimp rolls, chicken wings, and even fried wonton abound. Restauranteur Alice Nguyen has a hit on her hands here. Soft opening this past weekend so they are still working out some kinks, I guess. That said, I think our experience was definitely positive. Service was friendly, and when I got a red wine instead of the white that I (think I) ordered, it was promptly replaced. I had the Bahn Mi sandwich with lemongrass grilled chicken. That was very good, a tiny bit on the dry side but tasty. My husband had the "classic combination" which consisted of a skewer of grilled shrimp, some pork which was deliciously marinated, fried roll, rice, and pickled veggies. It looked great and tasted good too! We tried a bit of her homemade chili sauce....well, that sets your mouth on fire! The food is really great, and the service was top notch. I really enjoyed the Vietnamese wings, and the vermicelli, but I will say that I enjoy my local spot more (Not Pho 88's fault, and plenty of room for more great Vietnamese food!) Ambience is kind of dark and doesn't fully remind me of Vietnamese food or the country...but I've never been, so who knows - maybe they nailed it. read more

I don't even know where to start because I'm so blown away. Coming from San Diego I'm used to amazing Vietnamese food. I've really been missing it. This is it! I am gluten free and that makes eating out challenging. All the sauces are gluten free!!! The spring rolls gluten free, the chicken wings with the most delicious sticky sauce gluten free! The shrimp pad thai super yummy as well. The service was impeccable as well. We got to talk to the chef and hear the process of the pho 20-22hrs of beef bones simmering away to produce a delicious flavorful yet fresh and light tasting pho. I cannot rave enough. Amazing! I often spice up my Pho because the broth lacks flavor, or is too fatty, but this Pho is spot on and one of the best I've had. Don't forget to try the homemade chili oil-WOW! Smoky and flavorful- the heat sneaks up on you but doesn't get uncomfortably hot. It's been a long time since I've really enjoyed dining out. Well we waited for this establishment to settle in after its announcement in the Bend area. A few months now and we thought we would give it a go. Being it was a cooler autumn day, a bowl of hot tasty pho sounded really inviting. Upon arriving at Pho 88, we were greeted and welcomed very nicely by a waitress. Our wait was not long and it gave me the opportunity to look around. Our surroundings were warm and nicely decorated. Compared to some of our favorite places in Las Vegas and the Bay Area, this place was quite impressive. We started with a Vietnamese iced coffee. Usually I prefer a drip presentation of hot coffee with a glass of ice on the side. This came in a glass already iced. Giving it a taste I was surprised that it was not bad. I like having that cold drink to fall back on after gulping down a dressed bowl of pho. I like the jalapeño in my soup and if they are extra hot, you'll appreciate the cold creamy coffee to ease the burn. We opted for a serving of spring rolls, always a great appetizer to cleanse the palate. We chose the shrimp and pork version. Very fresh and delicious, served with a tasty peanut sauce, not bad. Wife chose the Vermicelli bowl of grilled Pork and Shrimp, I went for the combo Pho. Upon arrival to the table, we were impressed with their presentation. Wife's bowl was loaded with a savory amount of grilled pork and Shrimp, crispy rolls lined the rim. Tossed with the seasoned fish sauce, she proceeded to enjoy, and compliment on how tasty the dish was. The pork and shrimp were seasoned well in traditional Vietnamese spices and grilled to perfection. Crispy veggies and peanuts gave a great texture to the dish. She was impressed. I chose the combo Pho as it is my preferred go to. For one, I love broth. Any soup of different flavors and I'm sold. I always start off with a tasting of the broth, and this didn't disappoint. I have had many a pho broth and found this very tasty. It was clean and loaded with flavor. I have had bolder versions, but for the moment it sufficed. This bowl was loaded. Lots of different cuts of meat and vegetables, tripe and tendon. The meatballs were tender and flavorful. This turned into a great dish and presented well. A great choice for a cool day. We enjoyed our meals. On top of this, the service was attentive and friendly. Several times our waitress checked on us and also possibly the owner came by to see if all was well. Pho88 did not disappoint. A little pricey but I feel the food and ingredients were top notch. Also I added extra tendon to my Pho, oh yum. All in all, we were impressed and will be returning soon. We were visiting from an area in California that has plenty of very good Vietnamese restaurants and Pho 88 rates right up there with the best! Besides having good food, the service was excellent and server staff very friendly. My shrimp was plump and very fresh tasting and so was the pork. The dessert I had was not too sweet and very tasty. Definitely will go back before leaving town in a few days. read more
