I've eaten here during transitional times, settled-in-and-part-of-the-community times, with my kids, and now during those increasingly nostalgic trips back to Minnesota. Somehow Qué Việt works for all of them. I love it. My kids love it. And I genuinely have a hard time imagining going wrong here. My formula is pretty simple: get the spicy chicken, add a rice or noodle dish, and drive the whole thing home with an egg roll. Especially the egg roll. Qué Việt has built a reputation around those things for a reason. The food is comforting, generous, consistently delicious and completely without pretense. It's the kind of neighborhood restaurant that eventually stops feeling like somewhere you decided to eat and simply becomes your place. That's what Qué Việt became for me. There's also something strange about returning to restaurants you depended on when you lived somewhere. You walk through the door years later on vacation, order familiar food, and for an hour you're not really visiting anymore. You're just back. I wish this place nothing but good things. Thanks for a lot of meals, a lot of memories, and for still being there whenever Minnesota brings us back. If I could DoorDash Qué Việt to New York, I'd probably have a problem. It has this tropical and airy vibe with a bunch of plants everywhere. It's partially open air with indoor seating too. I sat at the bar and they had all the windows open and the whole atmosphere was just perfect. It's a Vietnamese fusion spot and apparently a James Beard Award winner which I can definitely understand after eating here. To start the bartender recommended the shrimp toast so I ordered that along with the sweet corn wontons. The shrimp toast was SO interesting!!! It was like a shrimp mousse on toast. I honestly loved it but fair warning, it was reaaaally spicy with the fresh jalapeños on top. Still so good though I pushed through. The sweet corn wontons were AMAZING. They came in this super flavorful broth that I drank by itself after. For dessert, I tried their version of mango sticky rice, which was probably one of the most interesting things I had. They don't actually use rice and instead use this jell-o??? but somehow you still get all the flavors of mango sticky rice. So different and SO delicious. My fav of the night! For drinks I tried with the Life Aquatic which was a mezcal cocktail with cucumber and it was smoky, refreshing and overall just amazing. Then I asked for a lychee martini which wasn't even on the menu but they attempted to make one for me anyway. 10/10 execution because it was also amazing! I was genuinely impressed by everything...the food, drinks, atmosphere and the service. They even gave me a little taste of their slushies to try at the end which were super tasty too. In my reviews of suburban Pho places, I always add a caveat that, hey, it's the suburbs, so chill…read moreand adjust your expectations. This is Blaine, and not Frogtown or Eat Street. Well, Red Kitchen completely destroys that narrative. First of all, I was here in a Monday lunch hour, and for the entire time there were exactly 3 non-Asians who walked in. One of them was married to an Asian guy, so she kinda didn't count. The entire place is packed with Asians. I don't even know how they pulled it off, sitting next to freaking Wild Bills off Hwy 65. But here we are. Once you hear about the food you'll know why. And BTW please ignore the one star reviews. This place would be at 4.9 stars if you got rid of the LeeAnn Chin and Panda Express crowd who stumbled upon Red Kitchen by accident and were disappointed, as they should be. Because this is an Authentic Asian hole-in-the-wall. Yes they have chicken feet. More to come... The place is small: 2 long tables that seat 10, and 4 tops. There is a tiny counter you walk up to order, and if dining in they bring it out to you. You grab your beverages from the sparsely stocked drink fridge when you order. It's basically a deli that looks like a restaurant, ok? Ambience? It's got painted walls, and the furniture is new...oh there are light fixtures over the four tops....and they play 90's-00's R&B and radio pop. You know, Asian-American Gen X heart music. LOL. Ok. But there is ample off-street parking in the big lot. Now, the food. I ordered the Large Beef Pho, and then I found out they had chicken feet for an appetizer, so naturally I had to order it just for this review. There used to be a stall at the Hmong Mall ran by three old ladies, who slaved and produced a 12-hr broth. I still dream of that place. You'd want to have a pool party in that broth, and swim in it on an inflatable giant rubber ducky with an umbrella drink in your hand. Well, Red Kitchen has somehow recreated that broth. AI maybe? It's not fair for the competition: Pho 126, Stone Pho, Pho An, I'm looking at you. Yep, all these other places are inferior, and more expensive. The large pho is just over $15. No one comes close. Ok now for the chicken feet. It's basically chicken bacon, deep fried, and covered with a lemon cajun dry rub. It reminded me of Shorty and Wag's off 38th and Nicollet, but without the MSG headache that came after. It was an indulgence of insane proportions. I ate the whole thing, by myself lol. So fun. That's kinda like eating a pound of bacon all by yourself. If you're not into feet, you can get the same rub on wings or chunks of pork belly (actual bacon lol). There are other things to try, like Bun Bo Hue and Boat Noodle. They also have Vietnamese rice platters and vermicelli salads. And they do have your American-Chinese section of the menu, but ok. It's MN and it's basically a MN Statute. Well, sorry Pho 126, it's been nice knowing you. You grew big and bad, with nice new digs, and we grew apart. I have found someone new.

But even the veggies were less than I'd expect, and they tasted more like raw shredded carrots/daikon than pickles. There wasn't a good balance of filling to bread, nor was that beautiful contrast of fat, acid, crunch, and sweetness that IMO defines the proper banh mi. Similarly, our fresh spring rolls were solidly sized, but they were primarily filled with noodles and bean sprouts -- with no mint or basil! I got my orders in within 5 minutes and received my dishes within another 5 minutes ( I felt due to it not being busy when I arrived). I took some photos of my dishes before I consumed them for my review and as I waited patiently for my to-go orders and to pay my tab. Prices were decent as well, ladies' restroom looked ordinary just like the original restroom from the previous owners. The atmosphere was busy and casual, music was jivy, parking was shared with other small businesses. I spent $59 plus tips (round up). Details: I felt that the eggrolls were a little more on the expensive end for just 4 small/medium sized eggrolls, but that's ok since it was my first time here so I just had to try an appetizer to start off with. Their eggroll sauce as light and savory just as expected with a hint of spice/kick to it. I ordered 4 eggrolls for appetizer, the Special pho with grilled pork slices, chicken lo mein and pork bbq banh mi to-go. Pho broth was sweet and savory (I had originally asked for some sugar to compliment the broth as I always do wherever I go and whenever I order pho soup but ended up not needing it at the end). If you're the type of individual that prefers sweet and savory pho broth then this is the place for you! All I ended up adding to my pho broth for some complimentary flavor was a little sriracha sauce and one small spoonful of chili in oil, and squeezed a sliced of lime along with all the other garnishes like basil, and bean sprouts I opted out the 2 slices of jalapenos. I finished my Pho but couldn't finish my 4 eggrolls (only consumed 2 out of 4). I received my to-go orders and paid and went home. I tasted the chicken lo mein and took 2 bites of my banh mi at home. The lo mein noodles were clumped together and chewy with no flavor but a hint of spice from what looks like black pepper seasoning? As for the banh mi it was good not too extraordinary but more on the saltier end for me. Would I recommend this restaurant? sure only if you're not on a budget, and willing to splurge. Would I go back to try other dishes? maybe only when it's a special occasion for me/once in a blue moon. Would I invite my friends and family to this restaurant for their first time?
