I actually found it tastes better with the sour tangy sauce they put on the side. However, a different kind of crispy. We also got the filet beef luc lac on rice which was good but the fish sauce carried this dish because the beef inside didn't have much flavour. A good portion too! Highly rated and well known for their marinated butter beef and chicken wings, I can agree with! The marinated butter beef looks scary cause it's raw but it was so soft and flavorful to eat! The middle was a bit salty cause it was soaked with the sauce but I ate it with some rice and it was fine. My bf and I got a small chicken wing and LOVED IT! We also got the broken rice platter and bot chien, both were alright, normal restaurant quality, nothing super special. We put our number down and walked around before getting a text that our table was ready. We probably waited 40 mins instead of the estimated hour. It was my friend's first time, so we ordered the usual suspects; butter beef, beef luc lac, and deep fried chicken wings. Also got the deep fried squid and dry egg noodle. Butter beef- acidic and tender pieces of beef. It tasted like we remembered. It balanced out the heavier items we ordered. Beef luc lac- ordered the entree size, added an egg, and ordered rice on the side. It tasted great mixed in with the egg. Perfect with rice to soak up the sauce. Chicken wings- perfect with the sauce. Crisp and tender pieces of chicken. The small was the perfect size to share with the table. Deep fried squid- first dish to come out and was a little disappointing. It wasn't as crisp and fried as usual. Definitely could have used a bit longer in the fryer. Otherwise the pieces of squid were tender. Phnom penh dry egg noodles- comes with soup on the side. This is one of my favourite dishes. The egg noodles are wide and there's plenty of sauce to mix in with the pieces of pork and innards. I've had similar items at other places, but they never do it as good as here. I get a little nervous when we try a place that's so hyped up that we actually plan our itinerary around it. My 15 yo foodie child watched YouTube videos, ChatGPT'ed the difference between Michelin starred vs Michelin Bib Gourmand and planned what to order months in advance. A friend visiting from San Francisco really wanted to go to Phnom Penh during her stay. She came to the restaurant on her last visit and she said she needed to come to the restaurant again every time she visits Vancouver so we took her there for an early lunch this week. I remember coming here years ago and did not have a good impression of what I had but I'm quite glad we took my friend there this time. We loved our dishes so much that they were probably the best foods we had during her visit. We had deep fried chicken wings, tong choy (water spinach), rare beef filet with anchovies and deep fried crab meat rolls. I could eat the chicken wings and crab meat rolls all day long. Al;though deep fried, the wings and rolls were light in texture but also full of flavours at the same time. The slightly sweet undertone in the coating of the chicken wing batter was addictive. Bummed out because I reaallly wanted to like Phnom Penh! I've had phenomenal Cambodian and Vietnamese cuisine back in Long Beach and Orange County, but the food here was not up to par.  Phnom Penh is located in Chinatown, a high traffic area, so I struggled to find street parking. As I neared the restaurant, a large crowd of people stood outside waiting to be seated. Service must've been slow and/or busy that day, because the order I placed on the phone took almost an hour to prepare - for just 3 items! I took into account how takeout would impact the texture of the food, but it didn't excuse the flavors. Best thing here was the butter beef! It's a Vietnamese rare beef sliced ultra thin with seared edges, topped with fried garlic, cilantro, and a house special sauce. Great texture, fragrant, and super flavorful. For my visit to Vancouver from the US, I have finally tried the Michelin guided restaurant that's been on my radar since 2019. My friends and I arrived within 15 minutes of opening, and we were seated right away. The setup reminded me of typical Chinese family style restaurant with the complementary metal teapot. We opted to split everything family style and ordered a variety of dry/soup noodles, veggies, shaken beef, and their signature wings. Standouts were the shaken beef which was cooked differently than the ones I'm used to. They were not cubed and seems like a different cut was used. Nonetheless, the rice dish was so flavorful and the sauce was so savory. The fried chicken wings were a group favorite with the light batter and tender meat! Got some of their most popular items as recommended by Yelp and the server. The food: Chicken wings 10/10 - Wow. Just WOW! These were super crispy and came with a lemon pepper sauce on the side that was super sour but tasty with the wings. Wings are cooked perfectly cooked on the outside and juicy on the inside. A must get! Vietnamese drip coffee 9/10 - Your standard drip coffee that hits the spot for that caffeine kick! Butter Beef 8/10 - The star of the show. The dish that everyone raves about. It's a raw beef carpaccio dish that is served with a super sour vinaigrette topped with a bunch of parsley and fried garlic. It's not a flavour I was expecting, as I've never had anything like this but it was a great flavour. Beef Luc Lac 9/10 - Super tender saucey beef served with rice and a sunny side up egg. Needed some salt or fish sauce but the flavour is there! Dry noodles 6/10 - Not for me. It wasn't flavourful and was quite bland. It lacked a lot of flavour and didn't quite hit the spot. When reading about must eats in Vancouver, Phnom Penh is one of the places listed, so we knew we had to give it a try. Wanted to beat the crowds, so we skipped lunch in order to arrive here early for a late lunch / early dinner meal. Arrived at around 4:45pm and no wait. Although there continued to be a steady stream of customers. Based on what we heard were their most popular dishes, we ordered: 1) Butter Beef - my fave dish. Beef was buttery soft and paired nicely with that sauce, cilantro, and shallots. 2) Egg Dry Noodles - This tends to be my go-to dish whenever available, so I was excited to give this one a try. These included my favorite type of egg noodles, too. Unfortunately, this dish was so bland, which is surprising given uow much meat and sauce was in the bowl. Tried adding some broth, but the broth was bland, too. Thought there was something wrong with my taste buds, so had hubs try, and he said he couldn't taste anything either. So disappointing. 3) Fried Chicken Wings - Hubs considered going with the large size, but waiter told him small was plenty for the both of us. With all the other dishes we ordered, he was absolutely right. Glad we didn't order the large. The wings were crispy and moist. The first 2 I ate were really good, especially paired with that lemon sauce. However, the sugar coating got to be too much after a while, although that lemon sauce helped cut the sweetness. 4) Garlic Fried Spareribs - same as the chicken wings. First couple were good, especially with the garlic topping and lemon sauce. However, that sugar coating just became overwhelming after a bit. We arrived late around 3 PM on a Friday, so only had to wait 15 minutes. The menu was massive, but based on reviews we quickly settled on two of the most popular options: - 78. CANH GA LAN BOT ($16 CAD; Phnom Penh deep-fried chicken wings with garlic, served with a lemon & pepper sauce): I'm fairly sure every table ordered this. I wouldn't say they're the most flavorful wings I've ever had, but they were beautifully crisp and crunchy on the outside while remaining juicy on the inside, and the small was a very generous portion - 35. COM BO LUC LAC THEM HOT GA ($20.50 CAD; Filet Beef Luc Lac on Rice with Egg): This is the same as the 34. Com Bo Luc Lac but with an extra sunny-side up egg, which was good but didn't necessarily add too much. I didn't find this dish particularly memorable, but it was definitely tasty and while there was almost too much sweet gravy sauce for the thiny sliced beef, it mixed really well with the rice for extra flavor. We also ordered a DURIAN MOO MOO SHAKE ($9 CAD), where all the moo moo shakes are just milkshakes made with condensed milk. I'm not a durian fan and so in the future would try another flavor, but this comes in a very shareable portion and would be quite refreshing on a hot day. Street parking is a little difficult to find so we ended up parking in a parking complex nearby. The chicken wings were so good and crispy and the flavors were delicious If we had dined in, I would have ordered the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk hot but for to-go orders, they don't have cups that can withstand the heat. Hands down the best food we had on our trip was from Phnom Penh. They are part of Michelin guide restaurants to go to in Vancouver and we can very clearly see why. We got the chicken wings, butter beef, the beef luc lac, and the canh chau cá (hot and sour soup) with fish, and the Mango Moo Shake. The Mango Moo Shake was honestly my favorite thing I ordered, the waitress recommended it because mangoes were in season and it was super creamy and refreshing. Long Beach in its hay day had the largest concentration of Cambodians who fled to America after the Khmer Rouge/Vietnam War Era. As such Cambodians in Long Beach have the authentic flavor of Cambodian cuisine. Their lemongrass chicken at this restaurant tasted like a water downed imitation of what true Cambodian lemongrass chicken should taste like. Service: 5/10 Servers were nice. It's sliced super thin and cooked medium rare with delicious sauce and greens. The CHICKEN WINGS were cooked to perfection, with crispy skin and tender juicy meat inside. My first bite was bland but the rest of the dish was a mix of salty and perfectly seasoned. It comes with a side sauce of lemon, pepper and salt. Exactly how my in-laws eat their chicken. We got some SPICY CLAMS coz we are in Vancouver after all and after having 2lbs of the stuff yesterday on our stop in Victoria Island, we were eager for more clams. Unfortunately the sauce was not to my liking (too sticky) and not garlicky enough. Didn't taste spicy at all. My husband enjoyed it anyway. We also got the DRY EGG NOODLES without the shrimp and it was pretty good. I'm not much of a noodle fan so it's probably just a "me" thing. I focused more on the first 2 dishes I fell in love with. The DURIAN MOO SHAKE was refreshing and the VIETNAMESE ICED COFFEE was prepared just like in Vietnam, but my husband said it wasn't strong enough for him. We arrived around 11:30am and were told it would be a 1.5 hour wait. They were right, but it was SO WORTH IT! This place was insanely crowded but for good reason. It was quite hard to get the attention of the staff at the front because everybody was crowding around! Once seated though, it was not difficult to get any staff's attention and everybody was quite friendly. Every other photo on google and yelp is the butter beef, so of course we had to order it! INSANELY DELICIOUS!! The beef really is like butter and it just melts in your mouth. The cilantro adds a fresh bite and the tangy sauce just brings it all together. The beef noodle pho had a wonderfully complex flavor that was just so warming and satisfying after waiting in the rain LOL. The luc lac was another dish we had seen all over the socials, and it did not disappoint either! The beef was tender and coated in that dreamy sauce. It also came with a clear broth and fish sauce, which just rounded out the whole dish. My only regret was not ordering a vegetable dish, but when the meat is THIS delicious, the veggies can wait. :) If you are visiting Vancouver, then this is THE place to go! read more
