I've been meaning to write a review for quite sometime now. I wouldn't necessarily consider myself a snob of coffee but I'm not overly fond of "coffee" shops that always dilute the coffee with sugar or milk or any other flavoring to mask the taste of the coffee. Which, let's face it, is probably the only way most people would frequent these establishments. I guess that would make me a purist. Regardless, I was picking some items for a co-worker who doesn't drink coffee necessarily but when he does, he goes for the Mint Mohito specifically and only from Philz. I decided that this was a good opportunity to see if they qualify as a true coffee shop, well...to my standards anyway, I felt like an adjudicator and it was mildly satisfying, I won't lie. They use a pour over method for their coffee and each individual drink is made exactly that way which allows more control of saturation of the grounds and truly brings out the flavor of the coffee.
Regardless of all the other mixed drinks and coffee fusions that I haven't tried, even the most discerning of critics I have brought these drinks to have had nothing but positive reactions. So I won't comment on that too much.
What can I say, I had and have no complaints really. I want to have complaints because I'm a complainer, but I can't in fairness. Every person who has served me, since that first day I was in that store was nothing short of exemplary; As though they were there to make sure your experience was nothing short thereof! I can complain about the parking, being that there's not enough and you have to take out a mortgage just to pay for parking but I've yet to find anywhere else in Pasadena that's anything different...well okay it's not that expensive, but I'm not paying to park and that point I will stubbornly never stray from. Parking should always be free.
Pardon my tangent!
The servers are truly nothing short of amazing. They are nothing if not accommodating, professional and just simply interactive. I know that sounds like a very broad nonsensical attribute but I've more often then not always experience people trying to usher you out of the establishment as soon as the transaction is complete. It's so nice to have a conversion with someone and they genuinely seem to listen to you and there is a dialogue that you more often find amongst close acquaintances, not the intimate type of conversation but the average mundane conversations where you feel like a true human being talking to another human being with all the nuances of sarcasm, subtext as well as relatability. Now, I'm horrible with remembering names but I recently when back to get a name of one of the servers. Now this isn't to single out just one person because as I mentioned before, not a single person who has served me there was short of spectacular. But I need to put a name to at least one of the faces...Claire (this better be the "correct" spelling of her name, anything else would be egregiously wrong). I have to say I commend you so much for the time and care you took with me. I was pushy and annoying and you just kept a youthful smile on your face even with my aggravating demands and ridiculous requests as well as manage to maintain a thoughtful ranging conversation throughout. Even when I didn't mention I wanted my coffee hot and not iced which I blamed you for but you so graciously made me one and didn't even charge me for the drink. I'm such a bastard. My hats off to you young lady. You are sometimes silly but a consummate professional and I wouldn't have it any other way. The silliness doesn't even detract from your craft.
I hope I covered everything, but I might have forgotten to mention that my coffee was heartwarming, simply heartwarming. read more
