I heard a lot about Philz Coffee and finally stopped in to try it. All the baristas are super nice and will walk you through the menu to find out what kind of coffee you like. They have a variety of dark roast, medium roasts and light roast. Based on what you tell them you prefer, is what they will suggest what you might like. The baristas will also ask you how sweet and how much cream you prefer. Non-dairy cream is at no extra charge :) I decided to try something off their secret menu after I heard another customer order an "oatmeal cookie". It was delicious with pumps of cinnamon syrup, hazelnut and cream. You get to taste your drink before you pay for it to make sure it's perfect. Cutest Philz ever! They've got a great little set up inside and out as far as seating is concerned. There's a great shared courtyard out front with plenty of benches, chairs, umbrellas, a running fountain and an old red phone booth for photo ops. Alongside the setup is the deliciousness I call Philz. It's my favorite coffee shop on the west coast. I love the simplicity of the pour overs and like that I can mix the roasts, get hot or iced tea if I'm not craving coffee and am always served with a smile and great service. I've been a big fan of Philz since it was a NorCal staple. My go-to drink is the mint mojito iced coffee with an extra half scoop of sugar. Even with the extra sugar, the coffee doesn't become too sweet and I can still taste the bitterness and minty goodness together. For first timers, tell the barista what you would like to order and then go to the register to pay. I don't go to Philz very often so I always make the mistake of waiting at the register. The price tag is definitely high for what it is but Philz is definitely about quality over quantity. For those who like to make their own coffee, they sell their signature beans here too. Each bag costs about $18 and there's always a special each month so a certain bean might be $14. The price of the bean is also expensive but compared to paying $4-5 for a cup of coffee, it's nothing. I've tried both Tesora and Silken Splendor and I prefer Tesora a lot more because it doesn't have a citrusy taste. This Philz is located next to Sugarfish and Lemonade on Lake Ave in Pasadena so parking can suck sometimes and it's definitely not a coffee shop you can hang at for too long. So my family and I go to Philz on lake a lot, usually we leave very happy that's why we keep going back. This time was different. Everyone was nice minus the one lady who gave us our drink. She seemed to be having a very bad day, which is fine but if you work in a place were customer service is important, it's important to learn how to put on a face when you come into work. She gave us attitude and avoided eye contact when we asked for no ice in our drink and when we asked for a cup of water. I guess we bothered her, very rude. When I travel I want to quickly put my finger on the pulse of a community. Philz offers you the wrist from a rolled up sleeve. You can't do that in a drive-through. You'll like Philz. Like my favorite shops in my region, Philz customers know what they want and get it. I walk in during the evening rush and it's hard to find a table, but it is library quiet. Even friends who clearly came together are close and engaged but dialed in to their work. There is almost a reverence to this place. Strangers are comfortable sitting in close quarters. You can smell the quality of the beans as you walk in the door. The baristas are friendly in a way that you can tell it's not about being punished for overlooking you. They didn't memorize top greetings from a manual. They feel it. They really want you to know that you are noticed and appreciated. My mocha was rich, warm and creamy on this cool evening. Really great coffee! I've had the iced mocha Tesora, the Rose, and the chai. The coffee is smooth, no bitter after taste as you might get with other brands or expresso. The chai had good flavor but wasn't expecting oil in it not sure if that was from cream or add on. The Rose was refreshing but Tesora is a decadent splurge with a nice caffeine kick. Service is not the fastest but they have mobile if you don't want to chill and wait. Also parking at this location is tricky. Overall, my rating is based on the quality and flavor of the coffee. Definitely worth stopping at Philz for a caffeine fix. read more

I love Philz Coffee BUT, THIS HAS TO BE THE WORST LOCATION. I travel often & visit all locations. Especially when in California. I happen to visit this particular location quite often & when I do they do not make my beverages properly. There is always an issue with a beverage I buy. Last time I visited, I was over it & went back so they could fix my beverages that I purchased. The barista seemed bothered when I made that request. In addition, the barista took literally less than a minute to fix both of my beverages. Which was concerning because It seemed as she just pretended to "remake" my drinks. Because she gave me the same cup & lid & stir back when the drink was "re made". In addition, I had ordered both my beverages with oat milk & I believe she used cream because my stomach was very upset after. I wish I'd gotten a larger size because the small was gone far too soon! Perfect to warm you up on a moody rainy day... Plus I love that they have decaf for anxious coffee lovers like me Based on my previous ~2 visits (circa 2021-2022), there's lots of indoor space to work but I don't recommend for extended periods of time because it can get loud during peak times and with the music. This was my first time at the Pasadena location. My bf and I had errands to run in the morning around the area so we decided to stop by for some coffee. Luckily, street parking was available when we arrived, but I can totally see how it'll suck as the day goes by. I ordered my go-to mint mojito iced coffee. It was absolutely delicious; milky, creamy, minty, and a tad sweet. Baristas are also super willing to assist in the adjustment of the coffee to make sure customers are happy. My bf ordered the avocado toast with sliced hard boiled eggs laid on top of the smashed avocado. It was expensive, but definitely worth the money. Hearty and filling even when we're sharing. Starbucks has a long list of coffees on their menus, but when you ask for them, the baristas give you a dirty look and tell you they only have Pike Place, their standard medium roast. In contrast, Philz has a long list of coffees on their menu, and offer every one of them. They have the menu sorted in dark, medium and light. None of them are single origin. They're all blends. Some of them have cardamom, but I could barely taste the cardamom in the Tantalizing Turkish I ordered. There's a minimal tea menu, again with no particular named varieties. There are some sweet drinks and some pretty delicious looking bagels and toasts. Although it looked like they had wifi, seeing that there are a bunch of people sitting around reading and doing their homeworks, the ambiance was a bit noisy. Fear not, the outdoor seating area looked cute and wasn't that busy. Even just going off the name, Philz Coffee probably doesn't evoke inspiration for the snobby type whose favorite bean is a Guatemalan Huehuetenango. You might find a bag of this sitting in the corner of a Starbucks, but even though they'd technically make this for you if you waited 20 minutes for it, it goes out of everyone's way. Philz Coffee only has blends, they sell beans on the side of their blends (as far as I can tell). But it's a pretty well rounded menu and tastes good. It smells wonderfully of coffee as soon as you enter. There are no gimmicky sugar drinks with rehydrated fruit and food coloring. I don't know why I'm comparing it to Starbucks, it's probably like a more casual Peet's. If you don't care where your beans came from but just want some good coffee, try Philz! read more

As someone who moved back to LA from the Bay area, I was excited when I found out that there's a Philz Coffee in Pasadena. The standard Mint Mojito (sweet & creamy) was as delicious as I remembered it. One thing to note is that their caffeine is pretty strong, so their drinks always gives me the jitters. Parking was a little bit of a headache on the street. The store is nestled with other smaller local stores. If I could give 3.5 stars instead of 3 I would. This is your standard Philz location, nothing crazy/unique. Pretty standard coffee, what I'd consider average but might be higher to others; definitely way better than Starbucks. They have some seating outside, but all in the shade and in this weird corridor, so it gets a little chilly if you're sitting for longer than a few minutes. The staff are what make the shop - they're nice and really helpful. The nicest thing about philz is that their recipes strive to be really balanced with each sip -- even their cold brew, normally which is just straight up bitter everywhere else, toned down the bitterness with notes of chocolate and caramel. While it made the cold brew a little heavy in flavor, it was still refreshing during a hot summer day.
