I've been going Phils in SD for the last 10 years and saw there was a location in Temecula so went here since I was in the area. The barbecue was still tasty but the onion rings were super disappointing. Literally the opposite of what it used to be. Bready, doughy, and not good. Also the water tasted weird like they haven't changed their ice machine in a long time. Usually my preference is buffalo, but the mix was fantastic and unique, we loved them. Later we came back for dinner. We were headed towards Escondido and got hungry. Bbq sounded great! Stopped by Phil's BBQ for take out and it was sooooo delicious!! We got a full rack of ribs, baked potato. I also ordered coleslaw but they forgot to pack it in my takeout bag. We added a sausage which was a good size! And some brisket. We had enough leftovers for breakfast with eggs in the AM. I love that they have a location in Temecula because I feel it's a lot less busy than their San Diego location. It's located at the corner of the Promenade plaza. There's plenty of parking around as well as a ton of tables inside and also an outside patio area. There's a bar area on one side and the other side has tables and spot to order for take out or dine in. They have an extensive menu. My favorite is the their pork ribs! I usually get bone in, but today I tried the rib less and chick less which was nice since I didn't have to work to get my meat. It was packed with flavor and meat was nice and juicy inside. I love their fries because it's a nice thickness and isn't too salty. Their Mac salad is my favorite! It's not overly mayo flavor and the tiny macaroni makes it fun to eat. The ribs were rather bland. Same with the fries. You order at the counter and they give you an alert thing that will tell you when your food is ready. Then you go get it from the counter. With the flu going around, I'm not a fan of other people hovering over my food like this. Other than ordering, you don't interact with the staff much. First time coming to Phil's BBQ and it was quite interesting. We were originally going to visit the SD location but there was always a long wait so we ended up going to the Temecula location instead. No wait at all! I like the indoor ambiance and it's easy to order at the back of the restaurant and if you want to chill at the bar it's on the right hand side. There's a lot of menu options but we ended up with the chicken bbq ribs and added on the link plus soda option for ($4.99). Basically when you add on the link you get the soda for free. Let me tell you the chicken and link were delicious. The bbq ribs were very dry and fatty which is strange because when it's fatty it's usually more tender. We got a side of potato salad which I like the addition of dill and the red potato's was nice and firm. The other side was coleslaw. Just the usual typical good tasting coleslaw. Overall meal was $24.99 plus the $4.99 link. Pricey for the food you are getting but I didn't enjoy the taste. Would've been better if the meal came with a side of corn bread or biscuit. First timer finally able to visit with hubs for some Sunday BBQ. Line at the door right at opening. To order walk straight down the middle to registers on the left. Then seat yourself anywhere. Great for large groups. If you're wanting seated wait service, head to the right side bar area. Plenty of screens everywhere to watch the game. Great menu and selections of sides. Monday, July 21, 2025: This was the first time we were able to get in and eat here. The year before the line was out the door so we left. This day it was so accessible much to our delight. Upon entering you're beckoned by the mouthwatering BBQ aroma wafting in the air, a good harbinger of delectable eats to come. We loved the decor with its rustic slash sports bar allure. It was very clean and seating areas arranged well. The young lady at the counter was very welcoming and friendly. We both ordered the Chick-Less Ticklers plus added a link and drink each. Our food didn't take long and we were soon savoring our chicken when I noticed one of the orders was not right. I returned to the counter and explained to the young lady who took our order previously. She apologized profusely & called the manager over. The manager took great care of us and we were thankful for her superb customer service and hospitality. We enjoyed the chicken, which was juicy & tender with the perfect char.The link was yummy too. The cornbread was very good with a delicious homemade taste. We were so happy we were able to finally eat here and enjoy their food. Now we understand the popularity. We stopped by for lunch on a weekday here, and it was not crowded at all. Parking was easy to find, and we were promptly greeted when we were ready to be helped. Phil's BBQ offers a whole dine-in experience or just regular dine-in, where you have to get up and pick up your own food after you order at the counter. We decided on the complete service. We had the December's special beer, and also ordered their onion rings, two beef ribs, BBQ chicken, and brisket. We chose their fries and the macaroni salad as our sides. The beer came out first, and it was really refreshing, fruity, and actually excellent! The food took a while to make it to our table. My favorite is the beef ribs! The BBQ chicken came in second; it was nicely cooked, tender, and juicy. We asked for the BBQ sauce on the side so we can actually see the meat and eat it as is before dipping it in the sauce. The onion rings were good, the only problem is that they are not colossal in portion :p The brisket is sliced deli-style, and we'd probably skip it next time. The two sides were great, but the macaroni salad was delicious and probably our favorite side. The fries were not bad; they were crispy and salty. The ambiance was very casual and relaxed. For a whole dine-in experience, though, our waitstaff only checked on us once at the beginning, shortly after our food arrived. We never got any water refilled. I would have liked the waitstaff to come by one more time to check if we needed anything, or, when the waitstaff saw our water was gone, to refill it. Been here six times now after being a loyal patron of the San Diego location since early 2000 in my comic-con days. Recently been making the 1hr 15min drives here as the food is even better than the San Diego location and the service here is just straight up benchmark breaking. Food: understand if there is anything wrong with your food and your not back flipping for it, go to the front and mention it. They will make it right and you will leave satisfied. Before I wrote this review to see what complaints people have and I realize most of them are just shy or people that won't bother to bring up an honest issue. The rib dinner has basically made me stop going to Lucille's. Lucilles used to have a 7 bone dinner that I would go twice a week for but their prices just keep going up and the portions have become something to laugh at. The ambiance here is loud and lively so expect to have some fun and have a hearty meal! Service is the best here. Everyone is quick to help and give awesome suggestions. The restaurant is located in a corner of the Shopping Mall where there are multiple choices for having a meal. Lots of parking spaces everywhere and easy to access. Phil's BBQ was indeed a great spot for comfort foods. The large doors were welcoming with signage that will help those newbies and unfamiliar with the layout. Was greeted with a friendly and warm smile by ALL the employees. Tried the Philibuster with fries and side of Caesar Salad. We shared this bountiful and delicious lunch and had leftovers to take home. I keep a list of places where I find extraordinary dishes and I've another to my list of Caesar Salads! The dressing was refreshing and delicious. One of my favorite now!!! The Philibuster had all kinds of levels of flavors. I suggest asking for extra sides of BBQ sauce to add more flavor and texture to enjoy the sandwich. The space is large with many tables, self serving stations for drinks, utensils and take out containers. And a bar area as well. Loved the independent hand washing station, IMO essential for finger licking BBQ. Despite it's deliciously promising presentation, this BBQ was NOT finger licking good. The meats were overcooked dry yet heavily doused in candy sweet sauce. It was so sweet and off putting that we had a family of 6 (4 of which are adult male meat eaters) and we had a lot of leftover meat. The sauce was so overpowering that we didn't want to take it home. The cornbread (also sweet) was undercooked and doughy in the center. The only item we liked was the potato salad. The service is awesome! You get treated so kindly. Looks very clean inside and the ambience is nice. But I didn't go in to have a pretty view, I went in for some good food and unfortunately my rating is due to the chicken being really dry, and the coleslaw tasted as if it was made out of onion. It was spicy. It is pretty affordable. My plate was only like 12 bucks and it was full of food, most of them being fries, dry chicken, and hard onion rings. One of my favorite places in town to get Beef Ribs! Love the Beefy Tickler plate because it's the perfect portion. Comes with 1 beef rib, fries, onion rings, and coleslaw. We visit this place regularly (~1x/mo) and have noticed the food quality drop over the past few months. Every time we come, we get the same meal :Rib tickler, no fries, extra onion rings. We swap fries for more onion rings because we really liked them. (wide cuts of onions with thin batter layer) Last weekend we ordered our regular and noticed they changed the way they make thier onion rings. They were now thin slices of onions with a thick coating of batter. It changed the texture from light and crispy, to soft and mushy. It was like eating a piece of bread. On top of that, the beef rib bone continues to get smaller each visit, and the quality has gotten worse. Last visit, I didnt even finish it because much of the meat was stuck on the bone. Sadly the San Marcos location had closed down :( Anyways I had the BBQ Baby Back Ribs tickler plate at this location and the portions are gigantic! Don't get me wrong the food was enjoyable but is average at most - the San Marcos charm just isn't there and isn't how I remembered the food. As for the location and ambiance of the restaurant it is very "Phil's" so they kept that aesthetic for sure! The staff was outstanding in their service - very nice people. 3rd Phil's location for us now. I feel like we're taking the grand tour. What's great is that at all locations, there's a consistency of high energy, amazing staff who's friendly and eager to help complete with smiles and a great attitude. Here we have the hostess Linzy, the cashier Emma, and the busser Cadence as prime examples of this. Really made our night and we can't wait to come back. It's at least an hour thirty minutes drive for us but it's worth it. Normally the self seating area is seat yourself but at busier times like Saturday, it was: Get in line, get assigned a table, then place your order. Food is Phil's flavor quality amazing and if something's off (like our soggy fries) they will very enthusiastically make it right. That's why we love Phil's. The BBQ char, the tangy sauce, no reservations on sauces and large portions all around. Great place for parties of all sizes and plenty of TVs to keep you entertained with sports, and some random game shows. My business friend and I are on the hunt for what we feel is the best BBQ brisket. Eddy has never been to Phil's so we couldn't wait to try Phil's brisket and compare it with Lucille's and Destinations while our experiences at those BBQ houses were still fresh on our tongues. Read my reviews of those experiences under those restaurants in Temecula and Murrieta. So when we arrived at Phil's and looked at the menu we found out there's no brisket...ever. Our next favorite barbecue item is meaty fall off the bone St Louis style ribs. And guess what Phil's didn't have that either.....ever. They only have baby back ribs which we are not a fan of because it's not as meaty, smaller, and sometimes it's dryer texture. At the other barbecue places we ordered family combo dinner sets with the sides included. Now look at the third picture on the right the left lower corner, that describes Phil's family meal deal. No St Louis style ribs no mac and cheese and no brisket. And no substitution for the mundane boring sides that come with a family deal for the sides on the right which wasn't very exciting either because there's no mac and cheese. I couldn't see us spending over $100 for everything we didn't want so I said "We could leave". Everyone wholeheartedly agreed and Eddy said enthusiastically "Let's go back to Lucille's in the same mall". So much for all that looking forward to eating at Phil's.
