First visit we ordered brisket and pulled pork. Brisket was good; not great. Pulled pork was okay; a little dry. Smoke flavor in both was okay. Went there for the ribs but was told they don't have them until 1:30pm due to the cooking process. No problem. The explanation made sense. I'll come back at 1:30 on another day. Have been there twice since. Both times at 1:30pm; both times a "sold out" label over the ribs on the menu. No one in line; no one that worked there at the counter. Today I waited to at least ask if I could pre order ribs since they seem to have been sold out my last two visits. I waited for a few minutes. Ona date We were unsure about what to eat since we had already had our mind set in stone for sandwiches nearby, but the tempting aromas drew us in. We decided on a pull bbq chicken sandwich, a bbq pulled pork sandwich, side of collard greens side mac and cheese, and side brisket fries. The collard greens lacked a flavorful punch, and the stovetop mac and cheese was watery and not baked. The brisket fries were excellent, but my pulled chicken could have used more sauce, even though it was very tender. As for the pulled pork sandwich, it was reported to be very tasty. Well I always have to try bbq when in available. Sorry but this was not up to my liking. Got the hot link sausage "loaded". With mustard sauce and slaw. Big mistake. Get it plain. The sausage was well smoked and jalapeño flavored. Just over done. The greens were bland and oily. The chicken sandwich with buffalo sauce was very dry. The Mac n cheese was not baked but boiled noodles and the kids loved it. Prob the best thing we had. Thats too bad because I really wanted to like this place. They needed more flavor and so did the mac & cheese. Mac & cheese looked like a cheese sauce was just poured over the pasta and mixed. Order is taken at the counter and you pick up your order when you are notified. No ketchup was made available for fries, sadly. Canned sodas, beer and glass beverages available for purchase. The food here is really good. The brisket melts in your mouth. The pulled pork is really good. The ribs are tender. The chicken is good for bbq but I don't usually eat chicken at bbq. The ambiance is fantastic as it reminds me of a southern blues and bbq joint (without the live music and the Smokey air). As far a as the food goes, for my first time I tried the brisket burger, cornbread with hot butter, and the collards. The cornbread was soft and fluffy, sweet and savory, but the hot melted butter made it that much better. The collards were absolutely perfect! The right combination of Smokey, fatty, and earthy. We spent Fathers day here and were extremely disappointed. It was my oversight not to have noticed that this isnt an actual restaurant, but rather a food court. The way it's priced, I feel like we deserved an actual server, but that was the least of what left a poor impression. When ordering, they only had pulled pork and pulled chicken. While waiting, one of our group went in to check on the food and saw poor food handling skills with no gloves. The chicken came out with raw portions and they refused to change it for something non meat as my daughter had lost her appetite for meat at that point. The building was overly hot and swarmed with flies. Outside had a breeze, but every outdoor table was dirty-like grimy and greasy. I apologized profusely througout the entire meal since I had chosen to try this and it was for Fathers day. Tried the buffalo chicken sandwich and it was not great. Chicken was dry and bland. Buffalo sauce tasted like Franks Red Hot. The smoked sausage was oily and had no texture. Collared greens were a let down, gritty and tasted like they weren't washed. The best thing was the mac and cheese but even then it was average. The staff was great though, definitely the highlight of the trip. Place was crowded with a lot of people who weren't watching their kids so this isn't a great date night spot. It's not often that Yelp lets me down. But sad to say The Smok'd Hog reviews did not live up to my experience. Got there on a lazy Saturday nooner and the place was empty. Had to wait a couple minutes for someone to show up at the counter. I was there for the brisket, but they explained they were out for the day. (Something about their smoker acting up?) Instead we got two pulled pork sammies. While the sammies were piled high with meat, there was little flavor - and zero smoke profile. Had to smother it in sauce which had some very good flavor. But the bread was a soft and soggy egg bun which immediately fell apart, and was just - soggy. I'm thinking maybe the pulled pork was steamed, and not smoked, thus the meat was watery which made the egg bun soggy? Neither me nor my daughter were impressed. No smoke flavor. We could not even sense any hint of smoke smell in the entire establishment...which led us to wonder....was it really smoked??? Hmmmmm.... Went in late after the market shopping. Due to our late arrival there were a few things unavailable on the menu. I really wanted fries but they'd already stopped serving fried menu items. That's fine I understand that. Decided on the pulled pork sandwich. I was famished so that may have played a part in the review but it was delicious. Yes FULL DISCLAIMER: I'm actually a certified BBQ judge. Having been a fan of The Smok'd Hog, formerly The Whole Hog, from their early San Diego days, we decided to pick up some of their catering trays for a family event. Although there was much deliberation regarding cuisine and location, I AM SO GLAD we went with The Smok'd Hog BBQ. Seeing as there was going to be somewhere between 25-30 adults, I ordered a whole brisket (6-8 lbs $170), a whole pork butt (6-8 lbs $60) and 3 racks of pork ribs (~12 ribs per rack $35 each rack). Everything was delicious! The brisket probably would have been even better if we had served it sooner or at least opened the lid of the foil container. We whipped up our own sides and appetizers so there ended up being plenty of food for the party (about 20-25 folks) and a ton of leftovers, which were still amazing the next day. The ribs were cooked absolutely perfectly according to competition standards. They had excellent texture as you could see a pristine bite mark after chomping into one of these bad boys. Not to mention they were just some really pretty, succulent, and flavorful ribs. The pulled pork was also cooked to perfection and was just basking in all kinds of pork juices. It was truly a beautiful site to see. Chris and his team absolutely knocked this cook out of the park. Chris also threw in a ton of sauces, a full package of napkins, plates, and silverware. My only regret was not tipping the team more that day. They absolutely deserved it. I highly highly recommend this place if you're catering an event. It is worth every penny. Stopped here on the way home from San Diego. What a cute little village smack in the middle of a shopping center. The smok'd hog shared the building with a few other businesses. Variety is the spice of life and since I truly believe the mantra, I got the three meat plate- 3 meats, 3 sides..,,come and get it! I got ribs, brisket and sausage. They were all excellent and beautifully smoked. The bark on the brisket was enough to make me weep. It was sooo tender and silky. The Mac and cheese, beans and slaw were all righteous too! Stopped here on our way home from a trip to the desert and we weren't disappointed! I got the brisket with beans and Mac and cheese. My husband got the pulled pork sandwich. All things were amazing! I personally thought my brisket was better . The spicy bbq sauce went well with everything and didn't have too much of a kick so I was able to enjoy that and the smoked flavor of the meat too. This place is located inside a food hall and is very clean/welcoming. There's a full bar they own right next to the service counter too! There's a bathroom right outside, just ask for the code beforehand. If you have little ones there is a little park with a bridge and slide. They also have an outdoor patio so dogs are welcome . In my search for outstanding bbq I was disappointed here. I've been fortunate to have great bbq in many states. The Smok'd Hog is located in the Vail Ranch Center ---Cook House. We by passed the brisket because when reviewing other diner pics there was no evidence of being slow smoked which is evidenced by the rings of smoking you can see in a cut. We went with the ribs....disappointed here first off...only baby backs on the menu. Normally you'd see spare ribs, St Louis cut, or maybe beef ribs....but baby backs? They were just ok, definitely not fall off the bone. We also had the pulled pork. This was a disappointing experience as well. The pork seemed to have been boiled in a sauce...maybe east coast style. It was not smoked..... We had two sides. The greens that had a sweet taste to them and cut down to half inch pieces. The tater salad was good and was star of this two meat two side order. It came with bacon sprinkled over it. This restaurant has a solid four stars and a lot of people like it. Unfortunately I'm not one of them.
