So, they just opened--maybe they should have stayed closed for another week (or two) until they got everything in. I've been in 4 times since they opened. Always for different things that Ace has traditionally carried in the past. Here's how the conversation goes--not just for me, but for everyone else I've seen come in (with the exception of 1 person--must've been Josh H) Scene 1 "Hi, I'm looking for ___, can you tell me where I'd find it?" "Ooh, yeah. Um. That hasn't come in yet. We're expecting it some time next week." Scene 2 "Hi, I'd like to buy some paint and not pay an arm and a leg. Here's my sample." "Ooh, yeah. Um. The paint mixer for Ace Paint ($15-20/gal) hasn't shown up yet. But I can sell you some Benjamin Moore Paint ($40-45/gal) I'll try back in a few weeks and see if anything has shown up. read more

I was just thinking about how when Fido and Kitty's World opened around the corner, Annie's immediately stopped selling pet supplies and put up signs directing people there instead. Annie's filled a need in the neighborhood until another neighborhood small business opened and then went out of its way to support it. Pretty great. read more

I have been to Annie's a few times now and am still happy that we have a hardware store in the neighborhood but I am less of a fan. Unlike many of the other individually owned hardware stores - like Frager's for example - the staff here is not knowledgeable so you have to know what you want as the staff will be unable to help you. I have had this experience across products - from paint, to keys, to garden. I hope this will change as new, more knowledgeable staff is hired. read more

The staff can offer advice on products and give tips on how to do home projects. Since relocating to 16th St. Heights nearly 5yrs ago, my wife and I have become regular customers at Annie's Ace Hardware. We've developed a level of comfort in the store, a trust of the employees, and a love of the owner. We've purchased many diverse items over the years, but one items stands out more than the rest and shines brightly in our lives every day. I found myself in a special situation in which I was offered the gift of a Weber Grill. I did a lot of research, locked in a specific model, and was ready to move on it. At the time, I was not sure if Annie's carried Weber's, but I wanted to check with the store because I preferred to do business in the neighborhood and with a store I trusted... to my pleasant surprise Annie's carried Webers. I went to the store and, initially, they TRIED TO DOWN-SELL ME!!! Out of concern for the limited space on my small row house rear-deck!!! You will not find such honesty, such concern, an attempt to down-sell at a your typical big-box operation. I appreciated the concern, but I was dead set on the Weber Genesis E-310 in green! There are small grills, and that use charcoal, and that are black or silver, but I wanted big and green and liquid propane gas! I got a great price at Annie's, and they received it at the store (from Weber) and assembled it there before delivering it to my home. We had our first child shortly after taking receipt of the grill, and the timing could not have been better. My wife loves food off the grill, so it was a quick and easy way to bring her happiness and comfort during some hectic times. It was also nice to get out of the house for a bit, get some fresh air, and just enjoy the singular and peaceful act of grilling. Last but not least, it was key to be able to cook meals (outside and on the grill), small and large, that left our kitchen clean and tidy! The grill is amazing and indestrcutible, and every enjoyable encounter I have with it serves as a reminder of the absolutely enjoyable experience I had purchasing it from Annie's Ace Hardware. read more

I cannot thank Donell and Tony enough for the above and beyond customer service they provided me with yesterday at Ace. I stopped in to rent a drill to install a front license plate bracket on my car (I'm not very handy when it comes to cars so I was a bit nervous), and they were both incredibly helpful from the beginning, really took the time to help make sure I was using the correct pieces, and offered to take a look at the front of the car. Tony looked for clips to attach the license plate holder and Donell inspected it, letting me know that I wouldn't be able to attach it as is. Donell went inside and came back with plugs and a drill, and in 95 degree heat (!!!) was incredibly kind and drilled a new hole, plugged both that attached the bracket, and then even screwed on the license plate. I truly am blown away with the knowledge, helpfulness, kindness, and professionalism these two employees showed me. After struggling and stressing about how I was going to attach it, it really made my day to be on the receiving end of such incredible customer service and meet two genuinely wonderful and kind people. It's so nice to have such a store so close to my home. No need to drive, can take a five minute walk and pick up a few DIY goods! The store is clean and well-organized, and the staff has always been friendly to me (and I've been there maybe five times now). The store is quite small, especially if you compare it to a Home Depot or a larger Ace, but they do have all the basics. The only reason the store doesn't get five stars is that the prices are definitely higher than other hardware stores. I do realize I pay a premium for having a store in the city, but the difference in pricing is quite noticeable. Still, if you live nearby, this is a great option and a nice way to support a local business. If you're driving, there are a few parking spots, and there's always plenty of street parking available. read more

Came here to get my keys duplicated. It's so fast and cheap. I was in and out in 5 minutes. I couldn't believe how great it was.

This place is the best kind of neighborhood business. The staff are always helpful (and also content to let me blissfully wander the aisles unbothered). Their selection is astonishingly varied - hits a great middle spot of new homeowners fixing up their place/families/gardeners/pet owners and all manner of DIY-ers. One day they let me take a few small plants home - for free! - that had seen better days, just because. Prices on some items are a little high (mostly those things you'd get in bulk at larger hardware stores), but mostly quite reasonable. They are also quite responsive to customer input - I'm hoping they'll be able to rent more tools and offer more classes in the future. Thanks Team Annie's! read more

We stumbled upon Annie's Ace Hardware on our way to lunch yesterday and it was the MOST positive customer service experience I have had since living in the District (5 years now). We were actually planning to go to Home Depot after lunch so we actually had a list of things we needed. The staff lead us directly to each item. There were a couple items they didn't have in stock, but ordered them while we were there! We are going to pick them up tomorrow. They also told us they will keep those specific products in stock from now on. As a gay male I'm not thrilled about these types of stores, but I absolutely love this store and look forward to going back soon! read more

Great staff, great experiences every time. Its the small things - if they see there's a wait on one register, they get someone to cover; they always ask if you need anything, but don't bother you if you don't. For a medium-size store, they seem to always have what I need, plus a lot of "fun" stuff to surprise you. (Although they've ditched the soda bottles - sad!) Anyhow, I much prefer going here to Target, even though Target is closer. They have a plant selection that seems to get better each spring. Glad you're in the neighborhood, Annies! read more

Usually love Ace's (the one on 14th is awesome and staff is very knowledgeable). Unfortunately, have had a few bad experiences at this one. Staff is very short and condescending. Ace says you can order paint online, so after getting a few samples that took forever, decided to order online and decrease # of people hanging out in the store during COVID... Checked online and they didn't have the color that I had just sampled from the store, so I called to see if they could mix it and I would head in for pickup. The manager informed me they don't do over the phone orders for paint, didnt care that it wasn't available online for the normal pickup system, or that I had the exact color information (just sampled it, wasn't just asked for "blue"). Told me to come in and order it in person and wait around while they mixed it. Asked him why, since I would normally be able to do this online but their system didn't have the color that was in their store. Said "not his problem". So, yeah, ended up getting my paint from Sherwin-Williams on 14th, who were much nicer. Wish we could bring Annie's back. read more

So so convenient. For it's size, it has a great selection of gardening, plumbing, cleaning, and even bike repair supplies, tools and accessories, paints and stains, concrete and mortar, adhesives and tapes. They even have a small amount of wood and trims if you need a little bit fast for a small project. It's a well-managed store and you're not likely to find out-of-stock empty spaces as you often do in Home Depot or Walmart. They can order larger, more exotic, and bulk items from the corporate Ace catalog and have them delivered to the store usually in a couple days. On one bulk purchase I made, I was able to negotiate a discount quickly and easily without standing in an enormous customer service queue and being passed to a half-dozen associates to get to the right person. They also rent tools. It's a great store. read more

Annie's is easy to find and once there, the store is tidy and well organized. The staff here were courteous and very willing to help which I very much appreciated. The only drawback was the guy I talked to about paint stripping could have been a bit more knowledgeable about the products. Annie's is a good solid hardware store--it's great to have a local hardware store with all the little odds and ends you need for your home. And I love their flower and herb selection. My only warning? From my handful of experiences going there, there is only one person (wish I could remember his name--a young man, African American) who works there who knows how to do the wood stains and paint. If you want to stain a fence or deck, make sure you consult with him--**do not** buy wood stain with anyone else (unless you want a fence of rainbow colors you never wanted). My husband and I made four different trips to Annie's for wood stain. On one visit a worker mistakenly put our stain into an opaque (rather than translucent) base, so part of our fence is now a bright opaque orange, rather than the warm (translucent) stain we were going for. On another visit someone just mixed the colors totally wrong and the color was not even close to what it was supposed to be. The color we eventually ended up with was too light and not the color I wanted but we were so tired of trips back and forth (we don't have a car so each trip transporting back heavy paint cans we can't use is annoying), we just went ahead and painted our whole fence that color. Also, I love the map. It's great that the store has awesome art--and art that celebrates our community! However, the geography is wrong. What's labeled as "Petworth North" isn't Petworth--it's essentially 16th Street Heights. And Brightwood doesn't start til Missouri Ave. I know there are plenty of maps out there done by people who just don't know this part of the city and the artist prob just used one of those--but show my neighborhood some love! We exist. We're not the northern forgotten second child--we're our own special place. read more

I bought L brackets and screws from Annies Ace to add support to my inexpensive basement bar stools. While using my screw gun and or impact driver to install the screws, the screws broke off several times. ( do you know how difficult it is to extract broken screws) Apparently the cheap aluminum screws they sell are so poor in quality that they don't work for their intended purpose. The people are great but do yourself a favor and go somewhere else to buy fasteners. read more
