I have been going to Petqua for over 20 years. The owners, Sam and Ed, are knowledgeable and kind. My birds have boarded here over the years and my dog loves to go there cause he gets a treat! BEWARE! They have a new cash register that prints receipts, but now, if you use a card to pay, you will be charged an extra $1.60 service fee. I wish the cashier (short blonde guy) had told me that before I used my card. A week earlier, the other cashier (tall guy) rang me up using my card and this new cash register, but no $1.60 fee was added, so I was skeptical. I paid for a bag of Stella & Chewy's Dinner Morsels for Cats ($44.49) but, the receipt said $46.09 ($44.49 + $1.60 fee) as the subtotal and with tax it went up to $50.18. At $44.49 plus tax, I would normally pay $48.44. I've never heard of a store punishing its customers this way. With this new fee, I may as well go to Petco or even Pet Central across the street! While they have a decent selection, they are so expensive and not everything even has a price, but when I ask for a receipt I expect that. This is the best place to make purchases for your pets because Sam and Ed really care about animals and they are very open to have discussions, pass along information, and just be great neighbors as well as salesmen. Been coming here since I was a kid, and am overjoyed to find the owners are still around running one of the few pet stores I trust and support in the city. Unlike big chains, PetQua is stocked with healthy brands for dogs, cats, and small exotic animals, and focus on being a community staple. There was one USA sourced protein treat they didn't stock and when I mentioned it, I was told to email them a picture and they'd order it! Their resident tortoise, George is a healthy beautiful boy roaming around the cool lower level or napping in a corner. The only spot in the UWS that consistently has food for my leopard gecko. Prices are on par with New York prices which are higher than normal, but they compete with the local market and are usually a few bucks cheaper than their competitors. They also have a rewards program which is great. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, and it's great being able to pick up supplies for my dog and gecko at the same time. Using every square-inch of space in the store, every nook and cranny is filled with pet food, toys, and aquariums. After walking through the 2-story shelves of cat and dog supplies, I went downstairs to the basement, which others here have dubbed "the sauna." Down there the fresh and saltwater tanks were rather unkempt, and the fish were either very healthy looking and active or diseased and dying--not much in between. One of the tanks had a terrible case of cyanobacteria covering the floor, some of the walls, and filter. Most of the other tanks were bare-bottom or blooming various species of algae on the substrate if they had any. It led me to believe they do not keep up on their aquarium maintenance, and really made me feel as if these fish were living in the aquatic form of a dog pound. A couple of crickets skittered by my shoes as I watched an enormous tortoise wander the basement floor. While I hate to be so negative, I came here because of the glowing 4-5 star reviews, and left thoroughly disheartened by the state of things. Upstairs was well kept, clean, and well-lit. While downstairs was very neglected and I wouldn't want to take any of those fish home to put into my tanks, unless to try and rescue them from the poor conditions they appear to be in. I would highly recommend this place for any dog or cat food/toys/supplies as they have a greater variety than I have ever seen. read more

My kids are in love with this place. We recently moved close to the pet store and it's now one of our local stops when we need kitty food. What keeps us coming back though is the sweet i think British lady that takes care of the pets. Every time I go with my kids it's like an episode of animal planet. She gives a lot of information about the animals there and sometimes we are lucky enough to get to touch and feed them. My kids will never forget this place as long as they live and this is definitely a quintessential NYC establishment. This is a fantastic pet store, much bigger than it looks from the outside. We buy all of our dog and cat food here and have for years. The owners are the best. They have our regular order in their computer so we go over what we need, occasionally making minor changes. Are you guys Insane! I visited this placed because the reviews on here were good. That however, was not the case at all. I'm not sure if this pet store has gone down the drain since the reviews were posted or if you people were hired to post favorable reviews.. but I must set the record straight so no one else wastes their time. It should be Shut Down! In fact I'm calling the Humane Society today to file a report. For starters the water in the fish tanks is completely unfit for fish of any kind. The tanks have obviously Never been cleaned. The water is filled with algae, so much so that if you look into the tanks from the top you can not even see a single fish below. There are many dead fish floating in the tanks and the salt water tanks, can't even be considered salt water. They are so filthy that they can barely even support the few fish left alive inside of them let alone any kind of real coral or other living creature. And the poor turtles in the pond are covered in some form of algae or fungus. It's horrifying to think places like this are somehow in business. Don't waste your time going here. Unless it's to give the owner a piece of your mind. read more

I only paid attention to the saltwater. If that's what you want, don't bother. The tanks are downstairs in a dirty, dark basement. Poorly lit and poorly maintained, all they have is base rock covered in brown diatoms and Cyanobacteria. Don't expect much from the service either. I've been here a few times, and every time I've been here, no matter summer or winter, it has just been a sauna downstairs. Honestly, I think it might even be too hot for the animals that live down there. Seriously, put the air on people, because you're driving the customers outa there! Besides the desert heat, the pet store itself is not too bad. It only gets 3 stars for not having the healthiest looking animals and for obviously not feeding their crickets enough. The bearded dragon downstairs (Note: if you go downstairs looking for this dragon, he may or may not be there -- they rotate in and out new animals often) has a massive head compared to its tiny body. Why? He was obviously malnourished and therefore didn't grow to full size. I know because I have a bearded dragon. And she's healthy and much more proportioned. We feed her well. The crickets at Petqua also seem to be lacking food. Not to mention that some of the staff, although very nice, does not know what they're doing. Really I'm comparing Petqua to Uptown Birds down in the 80s on Amsterdam. Now that is a 5 star pet store. Unfortunately we're now closer to this pet store. One fun plus. There is a full grown turtle that walks around freely in the desert. He's very friendly and can be pet. read more

Petqua is probably the top hidden treasure of the Upper West Side. It is a very relaxing place and they always have both the products I need and the answers to my questions. Moved to New York a few years back and most of the pet stores in the city are not great. On the upper west and in the Columbia area, Petqua is a better option than Petland Discounters, and their staff is more knowledgeable than the people at the latter. However, that said... I have bought supplies from them a few times- they have a decent selection. However when I recently made a purchase of fish, that was a big mistake. The fish were not healthy and were dead within a week of bringing them home, despite the fact that I rushed out and bought the appropriate medicine at the first sign of disease (the day after I brought them home). I'm an experienced fishkeeper and I was not pleased. Not the best fish selection, and sold sick fish which contaminated the rest of my tank. read more

As I am reading the reviews I honestly do not believe this place deserves 1-2 stars. I can see why some customers would not like the downstairs area. Yes it is hot but don't you think maybe it because they have turtles and tropical fish and reptiles that require that temperature? And yes they can improve on the maintenance and cleanliness but that's fixable. I like the rock flooring and lighting it's gives rain forest vibes. Not worth a bad harsh rating at all especially if you still left with a pet or supply in hand . I recently bought my turtle from them and I loved it. My turtle is super active and has so much personality. I loved George the Tortoise! He was so friendly and literally welcomed me as I was looking at fish. Even though the area needs to be updated and cleaned which is why I'm leaving 4 stars, my over all experience was great and I really liked that it was different. Not like an ordinary petsmart or petco. A message to the owners would definitely be to clean the basement, sterilize, clean tanks often, better lighting near the pond area. This place really amazed me!! An aquarium gem in upper west manhattan. I was so shocked when i was taken to the downstairs. Never judge a book by its cover is really the best way i can describe this pet shop. I would give it 5 stars but the young gentlemen that helped me wasn't as knowledgeable as I'd hope. The independently owned store is a nice breather from the chains around this neighborhood. I buy my pet supplies here usually but occasionally I go tot he chains and always regret it afterwards and return to Petqua. They have a nice selection of food and a sweet Amazon that greets its customers. I like the service there and they can order things for you if you have a special need. read more
