**Third Thursday of every month no public dog walking, 'as per usual' on the sign on the door, yet they don't post details of that on their site or social.** We walk dogs weekly, and of course Saturdays they're in highest demand. Download the ResQWalk app to help out a bit more. **Also, At these times, we are not able to host individual volunteers. -- NY Cares Team dogwalking: Sunday and Monday mornings (10:30-1:00 pm) and Wednesday and Friday evenings (6:00-7:30 pm).

It's Ronald!! Someone please adopt this sweet boy!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE BARC! Almost every Saturday I ride my bike out to Williamsburg so I can walk their dogs. For someone like me (already have 2 cats, work late, and live in a no-poochies apt) it's a perfect way for me to get my dog fix and feel good too. The dogs are happy to get out for a walk and I'm happy to have a dog for an hour or 2. Only thing that sucks is giving the dogs back. It can also get kind of busy during dog walking hours on the weekend (Sat & Sun 9am-Noon) so be prepared to wait a little bit, but it's super worth it. And when you are done walking dogs don't forget pop upstairs to the cat room to give all the kitties some love and a good brushing. Kitties need love too!

    "New rules"

Came to BARC today to look at cats... rang the bell 3 times before someone whipped the door open, angrily said "DO YOU HAVE AN APPOINTMENT" to which my husband and I told him we didn't realize we needed one? He half-closed the door to show the taped-on sign I attached here and said "we put this up LAST WEEK" which is cool except the sentiment is nowhere to be found on their website. He then slammed the door in our faces. F this place. If they had any interest in adopting their animals they wouldn't be so rude to potential adopters.

Barc Shelter 15 year old Yorkie, Woody. Such a charmer!

I started volunteering at Barc Shelter with New York cares about 7 years ago. Since I live in the area, I continued to volunteer on my own. I've never stopped going. Barc is a wonderful shelter with people that truly love and care for the animals. It's the only no-kill shelter in the area. The facility is very clean, and such a nice and quiet environment for them. All the animals are so well taken care of. The staff always greets you with a smile on their faces and are always there to answer any questions you have. I adopted a dog from Barc and he has become such a big part of my family. I often bring him back to visit, and he is always greeted with hugs and kisses from the everyone that works there. He's even made some friends with some of the resident fur babies that live there! I would recommend anyone that has spare time and is an animal lover to go and walk a dog or socialize with some cats. The animals really do love and appreciate the visit and attention. I commend the owners and staff of BARC shelter, for having the heart to do what they do for these animals! Great place!

We adopted a great dog from BARC about a year ago. They told us that he was a problem dog right away, were very upfront with how to handle him and what to do, and were always there for support for supplies and vet visits. They love it whenever we bring him back for visits and checkups and have been really great with supporting us. Now more than a year later, Prince (who we renamed Grover) is the best dog I've ever had. He can sometimes get aggressive on walks but has learned to be comfortable around other dogs, strangers, and is a real sweetheart. While it did require some work, we are so happy to have given him that chance. We love him so much and are so grateful to BARC for taking him in, getting him to the point where he could be adopted, and giving us such a wonderful new family member.

Note of warning - since Jan 2015, the average rating for this place is 2 stars. Following my earlier review about their lack of communication and professionalism (see below), I received a message from Adam F at Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition. His message, like all my interactions with this shelter, was rude and unprofessional. In particular, it touched on one point that I made in my review, household salary, and he didn't understand how it was a factor in my review. So let me clarify for Adam F. -- The adoption application for Brooklyn Animal Resource Coalition is four pages and includes very personal questions about your employment status, including household yearly income, name of your employer, and your current position. Like many other adoption agencies in Brooklyn and Manhattan, they want this information, so they can use it to vet people who are interested in adopting...income is absolutely a factor, which can make you a more/less attractive candidate.

Super conveniently located off the ACE line too at Canal St. They provide all the materials and your preference and they help match you with a furry friend. They were advertising a specific pick up and drop off date for the animals for this program, but i wanted to participate for a bit longer so I called a few days before to see if they're able to accommodate. The staff who answered didn't know the answer so they took down my info and told me someone would call me back. Days passed and I didn't hear back so I had to make a trek down there to ask in-person so that was a bit inconvenient. I wanted some time to prep my home. Anyway when I let them know that I'm a beginner foster and would prefer a cat that is generally friendly with no behavior problems, they helped me match with an adorable adult cream kitty. I picked her up with no issues. They provided me with all the supplies (and more) that I'd need for my week-long foster commitment. They also provided a number that I could text with any concerns should any issues come up. My whole experience was very positive. I'm glad to see that they have now expanded their program with allowing folks to take a dog out for a walk. I've seen further Instagram posts posting about these excursion experiences, but I think you have to come early during the day as only a limited number of dogs are eligible candidates daily. I've done similar excursions at Sean Casey in Brooklyn (no appointment necessary) and ACC (booking required a few days in advance online) so I'm excited this opportunity exists here in a more centrally located place in Manhattan. The shelter also allows visitors to come and view and play with their cats. You just need to make sure you wash your hands before interacting with them. I love this but also hope this doesn't overwhelm the cats too much.

We wanted a playmate for our sweet 1 year old cat, and a friend recommended Best Friends. I came by and the staff were all so sweet and welcoming. They were super informative and encouraged me to play with the cats. During my first visit, I came across the cutest orange female (RARE!) kitten. I had dinner plans and couldn't bring her with me. I came back an hour or so later and she was in the process of getting adopted :,) happy for her but sad for me. It's ok! I just thought that maybe it wasn't meant to be. A week later, I came back to Best Friends with my boyfriend on a mission to adopt a cat. They had an additional room towards the back that housed kittens!!! There were so many to choose from. We chose Juni because she was very cuddly and had a little quirky mustache. The staff made the adoption process so quick and easy. They even provided us a care package with all the necessities (kitten litter, wet and dry food). I expressed my concerns about introducing Juni to our cat at home, and they provided a step by step guide. They even followed up 2 weeks later with our progress. The employees and volunteers here really love what they do.

NDLB is an incredible 501(c) (3) non-profit and their global mission of rescuing dogs and cats from immense suffering and complete abandonment, along with their exceptional care and concern for each survivor (no matter the gravity of each animal's injuries), is nothing short of outstanding. The dog we happened to adopt is a Japanese Akita Inu and happens to go by the name Romeo because he happened to be saved from slaughter on Valentine's Day (on February 14, 2020). The founder of NDLB , Jeff Beri, and his crew actually risked their lives twice to save our dog. Once (due to the strict Covid-19 Restrictions in China at that time and a second time to challenge the people who were about to slaughter him). I personally found all of the NDLB staff I interfaced with during the adoption process very personable and easy to connect with. More importantly, I found the staff demonstrated great care and concern for their animals throughout the adoption process. While waiting for Romeo's freedom flight to New York, we received multiple videos and photo's along with ongoing communication from the NDLB Chinese staff who were with him daily. The New York staff made sure I (along with my husband), understood all the possible challenges that came with adopting a dog from overseas and wanted to make sure we were up for this type of challenge. All I can say is Romeo has completely changed our family's life. Our family over the years has had three dogs. Romeo was our first overseas adoption, by far, he is the most considerate dog we have ever had the pleasure of owning, and is always looking out for our well-being. One last positive has been, over the past months, being able to maintain on going contact with Romeo's team in China, and being able to send photos and videos of him here having all sorts of fun in the USA. (See Romeo enjoying sunbathing below).

It felt more like an interrogation than a genuine conversation. Instead of assessing whether I could provide a good home, she seemed focused on finding a reason to say no. What's more frustrating is how much control they want compared to other shelters. Most adoption processes are more straightforward--this one involves initial contact, a lengthy application, an interview that feels invasive, and a two-week trial period where they decide if you're good enough. This isn't standard across the industry, and honestly, it's a deterrent. Worst part? She did all this knowing the cat would stay in the shelter. I already have experience, a safe home, and was willing to adopt an older cat. If someone else truly wanted the cat, I'd be fine with that--I just wanted to see an animal get a home. But gatekeeping isn't helping anyone. The humane society works just fine and it's much easier.

AMA works strictly with sick, abused, and neglected cats and dogs (although I'm completely a cat person), which is more up my alley than working with perfectly healthy animals (my cat is special needs - he's three legged, so that's how I got into working with sick/special needs animals). I've been with AMA for about six months now, and while I wish I had discovered this rescue first, I unfortunately came across Animal Haven first (AMA all the way - AMA is much cleaner and nicer than Animal Haven). AMA is my favorite Brooklyn shelter, and I know people who have adopted from or volunteer/work at other Brooklyn shelters and have somewhat of an attitude when it should be about the animals in need and not about one's ego. Yeah the adoption fees here at AMA are mandatory (unlike the ASPCA where I also foster - they have voluntary adoption fees based on what you can afford; nothing is required besides being a good quality adopter in the eyes of the adoption team there) and higher than you'll see elsewhere, but the animals are genuinely cared for and loved here. The adoption fees aren't the highest in the NYC area for cats and dogs, but they're higher than most other shelters that I know of. It's hard to not get attached to some of the animals there, and I can name a handful of cats that I've grown attached to since the end of March when I came into the shelter for my first shift: Chewy, Spring, Autumn, Tiny, Puff, Kiki, Sushi, Chili, Maple, and my foster, Muffin. It's hard watching them get adopted, but it's also super exciting to see them find where they belong. Here are some final words - if you like cleaning, socializing, meeting new people in person, having some form of structure to your week, and getting out of the house, then you should volunteer in person at the shelter. If working with too many animals at once is overwhelming to you but you still want to help out, consider fostering - AMA covers 100% of costs (including vet visits which any animal lover knows can get expensive), and Mariya is always available to talk to if you need help.
