I went into the fostering program with my full intention to only foster. In our training, they confirmed this was not a foster to adopt program, but my first mistake was not asking if fosters could be considered for an adoption. In my head, I thought the fosters would still have an option to adopt the dogs if they had a strong bond. I was matched with a beautiful yellow lab mix - they named her "rockaway" I shortened to "rocks" then just went to "roxanne" to make it a little more catchy. On my first day with the pup, she was very anxious about the things around her and did not allow you to pet her. After taking the day off and spending the day quite literally on the floor with her, she began to allow me to give her little massages. After 2 days with her, my fiance and I asked if we could adopt her due to her needs and our growing bond with her, to which they replied we will let you know asap. We then begun to work on her sit, off, go, and wait commands which she picked up quickly and our bond grew even stronger. By Friday, they gave us news that they have an adopter already in process (ie her application was approved but she has not met the dog) we met the adopter via zoom, the young lady seemed to be a lovely person. With that being said, I started becoming very distressed over the entire situation because I've been working with a dog that is scared of anyone she does not know touching her, bolts if she hears anything strange, yet snuggles me and my fiance 24/7 and responded well to our training. So to us, it felt very unnecessary to take a dog that has been through so much trauma and throw her into another home. she had a loving mum and dad here that just adored her and wanted to help her to become a confident dog. After the virtual meeting, we confirmed via email are still very interested in keeping Roxanne. Nicolle from Badass replied back and empathized with the situation however, she did not talk about whether that could even be possible. A day later, they said they are going to go ahead with the in person meeting. We asked them to give us a call to talk about this, because our hearts are absolutely shattering at this point. We get a message from the Executive Director Krista asking if we can come to the office in the morning to have her evaluated and talk next steps from there. We agreed to that, as we thought it would give us an opportunity to give them our case and look them in the eye and see how wonderful of a relationship I have with Roxanne. That morning, I arrived early, and Krista introduced me to the trainer and shared he wants to spend 30 minutes doing a 1-1 evaluation so her and I can go grab coffee. At that meeting, she asks what I wanted to talk about (I thought we were both talking about it) and i shared my perspective, Roxanne had a lovely home with people that loves her and she's made progress so there is no need to destress her more. I offered to help pay for the lovely young women's adoption fee for another pup, and fund their next rescue trip, and continue to foster. Krista grew very aggravated and said that she is going to be adopted out to the other adopter. it's going through, and that is that because this is not a foster to adopt program - I told her that they repeatedly said they want what's best for the dog, and her loving home where she will feel supported and continue to grow her confidence is the best bet. Krista then got up, said we are done here, I asked to say goodbye and she just said a simple and cold "nope" So I have a few issues here: 1) They do not care about what's best for the dog, even if it is a foster they only consider the adopter and making it fit. 2) They do not spend time with the dogs outside of picking them up in Alabama and visiting them at the holding farm in PA. So what they tell you "their experience with the dog" remember it's limited. 3) They absolutely terrorized the pup by pulling her away from me when I went to grab "coffee"- the image of her scratching the group to avoid the steps and looking back at me while I went to "go for coffee" is going to be in my nightmares for probably the end of time 4) I felt very unheard - I understand that this was not ideal for them, but they never once asked for me to get on a call to discuss adoption or anything. They shared stories about the dogs THEY fostered to adopt and compared them to my situation, which I was then denied. They just gave me a huge red x to make a point that they are not a foster to adopt program. 5) I'm a well respected professional individual and deceiving me in such a heartbreaking way - was incredibly cruel for both me and Roxanne. I love this dog and they punished me for that. I'm praying that she is okay and settles in to her new home, but there is literally no way for me to ever find out.. I truly believe they do not do what is best for the animals, they do what aligns with their policy. Every animal is different, and it should be a case-by-case deal.

What a wonderful community of people! My husband and I took time to complete the Badass adoption application only once we were ready to commit and bring a pooch into our lives. We explored various rescue organizations in Brooklyn but Badass clicked for us. The process was very organized and fairly quick. It was comforting that they are so thorough in their screening process. The application is lengthy and references are required and checked, they also complete a home visit. While we awaited approval we read and studied and did our best to educate ourselves on dog ownership and various rearing philosophies. Badass rewarded our efforts by matching us with a wonderful pup, Penny. We are only a month in but are already so grateful. The Badass community has welcomed us and we are thankful to be a part of such an amazing group of people. Everyone has been so helpful and supportive. When you are overwhelmed with decisions like picking a vet, dog walker, chew toy, food - you name it, there are others with expert recommendations to assist. It's inspiring to see adopters from years' past post and share their stories. I appreciate Badass' efforts to keep their dogs and their families in touch, it's a true community. If you are interested in rescuing a dog, do consider this organization. Everyone who helped us along the way was a joy to work with and they continue to be very helpful.

I love Badass so much! I used to walk by the summer adoption events near McCarren park every Saturday just to see and pet all of the cute pups. I finally adopted my chihuahua Alvin in September and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. Badass made the adoption process so organized and easy and have been supportive even after the adoption. This rescue has a great community of fosters, volunteers and dog lovers and they help you through the process of adoption from beginning to end and beyond. There is a great network of fosters both down south and in NYC so you really get an accurate description of the pups. I have never seen a dog rescue that had everything as "together" as Badass does. Everyone truly loves the work they are doing. When I walked Alvin by the events on our way to the dog run, the volunteers at the events would recognize him and were excited to see how he was doing. Badass saves so many highly adoptable dogs from high kill shelters in the South. The work they do is amazing and I would absolutely recommend them to anyone looking for a dog.

Ask the Community - Badass Animal Rescue

Do I have to pay the $500 fee even if I don't end up adopting? The website is pretty vague just that I have to pay and it's non refundable but are they asking for it only if I agree tot are a dog?

Although this question is 4 years old and the original person may not need an answer; I hope this answer helps someone else. I recently adopted from Badass and they did not require any payment until you were ready to choose a dog and take them home.

The down side is you cannot be with your cat during their euthanasia - this is a bad thing. We who love cats or dogs (or for that matter any non-human animal that is part of our life) want to be there so they see our face last on this earth and know that we love them dearly. One other thing: I did use the ladies room while there and the hallways smell so horrendous. There is no reason for this. They need to have and should have a proper cleaner for the floors. Can't miss it. As a current veterinary-school applicant, I find it completely insane that ECC is an entirely-volunteer rescue organization given my own volunteer work in shelters. I'm so impressed with how timely and responsive Natalia, a lovely coordinator, was when I contacted ECC to begin the application process. I was deeply grateful as well to see the thoroughness of the application, because it was very evident that ECC's mission is to ensure loving, well-equipped, and well-informed owners. Natalia was fostering my babies herself, and welcomed me into her home with such warmth and hospitality when I picked them up. She was patient in answering all of my questions about my girls: favorite foods, any medical issues, etc. The girls were essentially feral when ECC received them, which was a few weeks prior to when I adopted them. Natalia had fostered them to a point where they were much more confident and her love and devotion to them was so apparent, but nonetheless, she adopted them out to me so selflessly and for that, I am endlessly grateful. I've stayed in touch with Natalia who truly endures this labor of love for the animals and humans alike. I couldn't recommend ECC more highly!

Tara emailed me back and we scheduled a time for me to come visit the shelter, which is not too far away from my apartment. Its located pretty close to McCarren Park. Anyway, i got there and was given a tour of all the cats (along with some recovering urban wildlife - like a possum!), with the opportunity to hold, hug, and play with each of the cats, to see who I was compatible with. I was instantly drawn to Steve, a 7-year-old handsome (in my eyes) gray fellow who had a funny stinkface, and a motorboat purr, who had sadly been in the shelter for a few months after his owner passed away. He wasn't that outgoing, but I found myself coming back to him at the end of the tour, and putting in an application for him. A few days later after checking with my references, Tara emailed to let me know that he was all mine, and they just had to take him back to the vet to give him the go-ahead. I wasn't sure how he, an adult cat, was going to react to being outside of a cage and living with a stranger in a new space. He was nervous and hid for about 2 weeks, but since, we have become BESTIES and his personality has blossomed into a totally new cat, a personality that didn't come through at the shelter, but that I'm so grateful to have in my companion. He is the best, and is proof that we should follow our gut, and that even after being stuck in a shelter, if given a loving, caring home and owner, your older cat with love you and thrive in his new environment. Tara and Empty Cages have been so helpful to me, a first time cat owner. I have followed up with them since when I needed to go to the vet for an eye infection, and they gave me great suggestions for Steve. Please support them! They are doing great things for animals and their new owners.

The adoption process was detailed and thoughtful, with multiple steps that showed how committed KK9R is to ensuring every dog finds the right forever home. After submitting our application, my husband and I had a virtual interview with a trained volunteer who asked meaningful questions about our background and did a virtual home tour to ensure we had a safe space. We also visited weekend adoption events to meet the dogs and learn more about the organization. Once pre-approved, we joined their Patreon to participate in their Foster-to-Adopt program--and that's how we found our Bari. Bari, a sweet 2-year-old Mini Jindo mix, was rescued from a short chain in a rural area near a puppy mill. The rescue arranged for us to foster him short-term, with the option to adopt within five days. From minute one, we fell in love. The support made the Foster-to-Adopt program incredible, especially for me as a first-time dog owner. My husband had experience with rescues, but I didn't, and KK9R ensured I felt confident and equipped every step of the way. I had a direct line of communication with the staff and kept a detailed online diary about Bari's food, medication, energy, temperament, potty habits, and anything else that stood out. The staff used that diary to give us feedback, tips, and encouragement. They helped me understand basic things like how to encourage him up a flight of stairs or how much to feed him, and they were always available to help troubleshoot or celebrate progress. Interacting with the volunteers and staff was fantastic. Everyone was so friendly, kind, and genuinely invested in our success. I grew up with a fear of dogs, and it turns out that many of these pups, including Bari, come with their own fears. The support I received from KK9R helped us feel safe, confident, and ready to build trust with each other. Their care helped me become the kind of dog guardian Bari needed and helped Bari begin to feel secure in his new life. One of the things that sets KK9R apart is its required training program, which ensures every dog and adopter has the foundation they need to thrive. Training is done with professionals with experience working with dogs like Bari--dogs who may not know how to play, lack confidence, have difficulty trusting people, or need help with basic skills like crate training, leash walking, potty habits, and recall. While it may seem like a lot initially, the required sessions are invaluable. The rescue doesn't receive any kickbacks--KK9R just properly vets the trainers to ensure adopters are working with people who truly understand the unique needs of these dogs. We paid upfront at the time of adoption and quickly scheduled five sessions with a trainer who came to our home and worked around our schedule. I started out with zero experience, and those sessions helped lay a strong foundation. Training is a lifelong commitment, and I'm so grateful KK9R sets adopters up for long-term success right from the start. Another incredible part of adopting through KK9R is the rich alumni network. Since bringing Bari home, I've connected with other KK9R adopters in our neighborhood--people like me who welcomed a pup from South Korea into their lives. It's been such a gift. Bari and I have joined other alums and their dogs for pack walks in Prospect Park, dog-themed craft events, and other informal meetups. It's been a wonderful way for the dogs to build confidence and socialize and for the humans to swap stories, share recommendations for gear and services, and be in a community with people who understand the joys and challenges of adopting a rescue pup. I've made dear friendships through this network, and Bari has too. We look forward to every pack walk--it's been one of this journey's most unexpectedly beautiful parts. Because KK9R has given me so much, I knew I wanted to give back. In the spring of 2024, I began volunteering with the organization as a KK9R alum. Signing up was simple, and attending adoption events quickly became a highlight of my weekends. Even the simplest volunteer tasks--helping others learn about the rescue or watching dogs interact with potential adopters--felt incredibly meaningful. I've also conducted virtual interviews with new applicants for the past year. It's been a rewarding way to spend my free time. I enjoy guiding others through the same thoughtful process that helped me find Bari and helping them understand what it takes to form a lifelong, loving bond with a rescue pup. A year and a half later, Bari continues to thrive. He's changed our lives for the better.
