We adopted our second dog, Oliver, from Korean K9 Rescue in May 2026, two and a half years after adopting our first KK9R dog, Bari. I remain profoundly grateful for this organization and for the people who do this extraordinarily difficult work. Oliver came to us with a complicated history. He is a senior rescue who had already experienced a failed adoption and had spent years learning that human hands were not always safe. KK9R did not minimize his history, rush the process, or try to make him sound easier than he was. They were honest with us about his needs and thoughtful about whether our home was the right one for him. Since his adoption, I have been reminded again and again why KK9R's process is as thorough as it is. Rescue is not simply about getting a dog out of a shelter and into a home. It is about doing everything possible to create a placement that can be permanent, and one in which the dog has a real chance to feel safe, be understood, and have a joyful life. Oliver has now had significant dental work and eyelid surgery, and we are slowly building a life around safety, trust, consent, and predictability. He is funny, stubborn, deeply sensitive, and increasingly joyful. Watching him discover toys, enrichment, comfortable places to sleep, and the simple pleasure of being understood has been one of the great privileges of my life. I am especially grateful to his fosters, his trainers, and the medical, adoption, and administrative teams and volunteers who cared for Oliver before he became ours and who trusted us with his next chapter. The work they do is expensive, complicated, emotionally demanding, and often invisible. If you are considering adopting from KK9R, my advice is simple: take the process seriously. Follow their guidance. Listen when they tell you who a dog is. Understand that the requirements exist because these dogs have already endured enough uncertainty. I've been looking for a good local rescue organization and KK9R is the best I've found! they are very active, responsible and responsive to application and inquiries. Often times, you see organizations with adoptable animal pictures asking for application, after you submit lengthy application, often you don't hear from them, and animal is no longer available. And since application is needed for each specific animal, you have to go through the process all over again. KK9R is different; they ask for your application to vet you. You can apply for particular animal or general to get approved. They are very thorough about vetting applicants and very responsive. Then, after you get pre-approved, you can visit the animals. Which makes the process more streamlined and efficient. They do great work with local rescues as well as oversea rescues; particularly from south korea. The dogs are adorable and great quality. Some dogs are rescues from puppy mills, that sells to pet shops. They are also very honest about medical history of the dogs, and what to expect. After adoption, they also do follow ups. I only have great things to say about Korean K9 rescue! I heard about fostering dogs around 3 years ago, and after doing some research on various animal rescues in NYC, Korean K9 clearly was the winner. From the foster interview process through getting a dog to foster, they're there every step of the way, whether that's providing training tips to help get your foster dog more acclimated to its environment to providing food and supplies. I initially started to foster to get a feel what it's like to have a dog in the city, but I've found it to be much more rewarding. It's great knowing I am helping provide a safe home for a dog (and often with fostering you're their first home in America)! It's fun seeing the personalities of each foster dog as well as seeing them open up throughout and eventually go to the furever homes. While I have only fostered with Korean K9, I can tell that their adoption process is just an organized and thought out as their foster program. I could write for hours about my incredible experience with KK9R, but I'll give you the sparknotes. I adopted my dog, Milo from KK9R back in early July and since then I have spent nearly every weekend volunteering to aid this rescue and their amazing mission. We adopted Kori in June 2021-we were first time adopters and she was our third try with KoreanK9. The first two dogs we applied for in May 2021 had long lists of applicants and were quickly adopted, but that didn't deter us from trying again and the third time was the charm! Looking back, everything was meant to be. We truly feel we were destined to be with Kori. Kori's adoption day went very smoothly--KoreanK9's process was very well-structured and set us up for success. There was a supplies checklist that provided us with the essentials Kori would need, and there was a thorough orientation we had to attend before taking Kori home. We were very well-informed and knew what to expect from Day 1, including what to do and what NOT to do. We were very impressed with the level of detail from the onboarding process (there were instruction videos for how to feed, how to guide your dog if they don't want to walk, and more!!) and the level of involvement from the adoption team. There were very strict guidelines we had to follow, which could seem daunting, but all for good reasons. Regardless, we felt prepared and very supported throughout the whole process and even to this day! Fast forward several months, we decided to foster for KK9 as a way to give back to the rescue and pay it forward to another pup in need. Similar to our adoption experience, we were first time fosters yet felt prepared and supported by KK9's foster team (who I think are angels in disguise)--they provided us food, treats, goat's milk, meal toppers, meds, collars and leashes. The foster instruction manual is THOROUGH but SO important and informative. We never felt like our foster dog was "just another dog" to KK9--they know every foster dog by name and care about every one of them. Fostering has been so rewarding in so many ways. We're happy we get to provide a safe home for another pup, Kori has some furry companionship, and we get to learn more about how to be even better pawrents! It's been a wonderful experience volunteering with KK9R as a foster parent to these pups. I have been following their work for years now and never quite felt ready to step forward as a foster. But when the opportunity presented itself, I took the plunge. The application process was quick but thorough, with clear communication on the expectations for a foster dog parent. Although I've never owned a dog myself, I never felt in thrown in the deep end - the team at KK9R is responsive and incredibly supportive. The organizational skills of the team blew me away. The foster manual is well written and full of useful information and standards. The communication over slack is great to share experiences with the community and give updates on the foster dogs. Finally, the foster diary is another great example of discipline to ensure that the rescue team is well apprised on the well-being of the dogs. The great communication, organization and professionalism really emphasizes how much they care about these dogs. Our family has a great experience with both fostering and adopting from Korean K9. You can tell they really care about their dogs and have put in a tremendous amount of effort to help save these dogs and give them the best lives they can. The intense process and strict policies made me nervous at first but it was one of the most rewarding decisions I ever made to got through with the process. I adopted Mocha (aka BB) back in July and couldn't be more thrilled to have her in our family. While the process might have been more intense than other places, you can tell that they really put the best interest of the dogs in place to make sure that every dog is matched with the best home fit. These dogs are being rescued from some terrible living conditions and it's amazing the amount of effort they put in to make sure the dogs are put into a loving home. While requiring a trainer may seem off-putting for some folks, it really helps to instill confidence and trust with these dogs who may just need a little more loving and patience than an average dog. I felt a lot more reassured by having a trainer - something I honestly never would've considered normally. One of the best things is also the fact that there's a strong KK9 community! I've chatted with several alumni and also gotten some tips and attended some events that was great to have. We adopted our dog, Yeonggi (fka Ricky), from Korean K9 this summer and I couldn't have asked for a better experience. While their adoption fees definitely gave us pause initially, we quickly realized that its for good reason! So much care is put into the dogs before they reach your home. In Korea, the dogs work with trainers for months to prepare for NYC - everything from walking stairs, leash training, taking baths, going to the airport, crate training and more. My dog was aggressive towards male dogs when he first arrived at their Korean facility and they trained him out of it there (we're even fostering a male dog that Yeonggi is perfectly content living alongside). Once they're in NYC, the fosters keep detailed notes about how things are going. Gina and Vicky check in with every foster dog daily to give guidance and make sure the dog is habituating well. We had such a wealth of information about our dog by the time he entered our home and with the help of our trainer (which Korean K9 assigned to us), he is so well-adjusted (and all of our friends comment on how well-behaved he is, especially for a rescue, which I take zero credit for). Since then, I've started fostering and have seen first-hand just how much Korean K9 cares about their dogs. Gina and Vicky have done multiple Zoom sessions to coach me through a tough separation anxiety case, taken frantic calls from me in the middle of the day and even showed up in person in the middle of the night to help out when my foster dog got tapped by a car and bolted. Throughout the past year, I have both fostered several dogs and adopted through KK9R and I can say that it is one of the best rescues out there. The experience fostering was a highlight of my entire year. We fostered three dogs and each had their unique personalities and needs which Gina and Vicky helped us with at every step. They use a Slack group to have everyday check-ins with the fosters and are literally available to us whenever we needed it. They also provide almost everything you need to foster and give you more every week--we totally had more than enough of everything like toys, bully sticks, food, meds... for our first foster, they even provided the crate since we were just starting out. The team at KK9R is extremely dedicated to best serving these dogs and also helping every volunteer do the best job they can in helping along the way. We adopted Cayambe (previously Fommy) 9 months ago and are so thrilled that she's a part of our family now. She joined us and our bulldog mix Vesuvius in our home and has blossomed into an outgoing, loving dog. When we first got her, she was fearful of us and new people, but she has over the months, opened up and now greets new people with confidence. We've been able to build a relationship of trust with her and are now in a place where she's able to run around in the forest with her dog friends off-leash to explore the woods and swim in creeks. I am so grateful for Korean K9 Rescue! They're truly an amazing organization and how me and my boyfriend got our rescue dog, Bella. Their passion and commitment to save dogs from being part of the korean meat trade really comes through in everything they do. We went through the adoption process pre pandemic times around August 2019. This was when we they held adoption events in Brooklyn. Before heading the to adoption event, we went through their helpful checklist online of what you need to do to apply and even a helpful list of things to buy to prepare for the puppy. We went to the event in Brooklyn and were able to do a meet and greet with three dogs. The first one we absolutely fell in love with and put our preference down for her and then went through an interview with one of the adoption coordinators. They were super friendly and conversational throughout. You can tell they're truly just trying to find the right home for the dogs. We were very blessed to end up as a match and that's the day we became pawrents to a beautiful Jindo mix, Bella. Even since we adopted over 1.5 years ago, we've stayed very connected with their community. They do a wonderful job of connecting the alumni community with events, updates, and have even pivoted to a great virtual presence in pandemic times. Bella even had a sister that got adopted a week before she did and korean K9 helped us get connected her owners. We've had birthday celebrations and play dates together! Few things in this world have made me happier than this little guy. We had a great experience with KK9. They made sure we had every tool and resource necessary to make sure he was successfully acclimated to our home. They explained thoroughly on how to bring my dog into his new home. I've rescued dogs before but these ones coming from Korea, these dogs are known to be major flight risk and super skiddish. Would not recommend for first time dog owners. Working with their trainers, we've made some amazing progress. I've reached out to the KK9 staff on multiple occasions and they are always super helpful and encouraging. I've read reviews complaining about the price but I can say landing a dog from Asia isn't easy or cheap - just the flight and vetting alone costs real money and resources. Every tool they require of you - from training cot/bed and GPS collar to training packages - is a peace of mind and reassurance that you'll set them up for success. We adopted our boy Gerbert from this rescue at the Bushwick adoption event and the whole experience was pure joy - we adore him, and the employees. The founder Gina and her coworker Tina were incredible, texting days after adopting (texting from Korea!) to see how things were going, responding to questions about such topics as crate training, attachment, food and toys. When the American vet at Heart of Chelsea (not going back) insisted she felt a ball and he needed to be neutered, Gina insisted he was neutered in Korea. The vet went so far as to book his neutering appointment. Gina called the Korean vet, got more info and his records, called the American vet, and had the shelter pay for our testosterone blood test to end the debate. The results: he had hardly any testosterone, proving he was neutered, while the Heart of Chelsea vet was about to put him under the knife for no reason and make hundreds of dollars. I adopted my rescue dog from Korean K9 in 2019 and started fostering for them this year, as we have learned so much from helping our pup Cali open up and get used to the hectic city of NYC! KK9R does amazing work in Korea to save dogs from terrible conditions like dog meat farms, being chained up, and hoarding situations. These dogs deserve a great life in a loving home, and in many cases they need plenty of recovery time and care to adjust to the good life. After losing my westie of nearly 14 years to cancer in May of 2020, I thought that I would never have another dog. I have decided to share more of my family's heartbreaking experience with this "rescue" organization as I was too upset to keep typing as tears were running down my face. I forgot to mention that when we were doing the at home zoom interview, the KK9R rep said "I see you're interested in a dog named ----------". (I know if I get a response, I will be told they know who I am and the name of the dog as I have seen in other reviews, they are keen to investigate who dare bashes them, and will let you know which I call bullying). My son was bewildered by that and stated he didn't request to see any particular dog. The rep said it again, stating it was documented on her paperwork. I immediately looked the dog up and fell in love with HIM and was heartbroken when I read the horrific ordeal he endured (if that was even the truth). I think I'd have to agree that although they state they are a non-profit, they are no doubt getting some kickback from one or more of the companies/businesses you MUST use. There is no way on God's green earth a rescue would EVER release a dog in the mental state as the beautiful little boy we received. NO WAY. This poor dog shook, plastered his little body against the back of the crate when gently trying to chain his house leash to the lead given to take him out, was PETRIFIED of wind, movement, birds singing, and anything you could name. Three and a half months, and nothing changed except I was able to gently and with time get him to sit down on his bed on all four legs so I could pet him and calm him down. Being on all four legs is less stressful than standing on just the back legs. I would pet him sometimes for up to 2 hours. That was the only time he was relaxed. I miss him every day and can only hope that a trainer not affiliated with this so-called rescue will foster/adopt him and give him the proper training he so desperately needs. We are such fans of KoreanK9 Rescue's mission and their staff! We adopted our pup Lychee almost four years ago and have since volunteered for multiple events and fostered seven dogs. Their adoption procedure may be more intense than other rescues, but this is reflective of how much they truly care for their pups and ensuring they fit into the home that best fits their personalities and lifestyles. They offer a support groups on Facebook and Instagram so pawrents have a community to go to for Q&As. Volunteering at events is always a good time with ~3 hr shifts to watch these new pups find their furever homes is super rewarding. Fostering has also been an incredible experience as you help these pups become more acclimated to living in a home and experience the different parts of the city. My experiences with KK9R have made me believe it is a terrible organization run by awful people, Gina and Nick. I adopted a dog from KK9R and also fostered for them. They told me that the dog I adopted had tested positive for heartworm a few months prior, but that he had received treatment and since tested negative in Korea. However, since his first vet visit after adopting him, my dog has repeatedly tested positive for heartworm. Additionally, contrary to what KK9R told us before adopting him, the medical records from Korea did NOT reflect that he had tested negative after the heartworm treatment (they indicate he was tested before treatment, but not after). The records also show that he was treated with 2 shots, instead of the 3 shots recommended by the American Heartworm Society. When I called Gina and Nick, I barely got a chance to ask about the discrepancy in the records before they started screaming at me and calling me a "bad person" and "entitled" for daring to question their records. It was a bizarre experience. They seemed ready to attack as soon as they answered the phone. Meanwhile, KK9R mandates that their adopters keep the dogs crated throughout the day for 4 hours on, 2 hour off. They say to ignore the dogs if they cry and to keep doing this until they adjust to the crate. Well our dog got so distressed from this treatment that he would drool all over himself and pant excessively. Our vet said this was cruel and dangerous given that he was positive for heartworm. She said he shouldn't be put in a situation where he could be very distressed. When I told Gina and Nick what the vet said, they maintained we should keep crating him. Recently, an acquaintance also adopted a puppy from KK9R despite having told her about my experience. Now that dog has tested positive for heartworm too! Additionally, many of the dogs I fostered for KK9R were ill. When I'd inform KK9R of a foster's illness, they would direct me to dispense prescription medication without even seeing the dog or having them evaluated by a vet. KK9R would routinely provide me with various prescription medications when I'd pick up a foster, in the event that the dog later showed signs of illness. UPDATE: Gina, your response is peppered with lies and I demand you retract it. I have our phone conversation recorded. At no point did I call you "scammers" or any other name. I spent a minute or so explaining some concerns we had about discrepancies in the Korean vet records and discrepancies in what you had instructed us versus what the vet was saying. At that point, you asked us to hold on and then put Nick on the phone, he started calling us "bad people" and other ad hominem attacks. Even as my partner was trying to explain that we were just trying to get information so we could help our sick dog, Nick continued on the attack, bringing her to tears. This was truly the most cowardly way you guys could handle a call from a concerned dog owner. Our dog has continued to test positive and because of the insufficient or nonexistent treatment in Korea, he has developed mitral valve disease from the heartworm. Although you ultimately offered to pay for additional treatment if we went to your vet in southern Brooklyn, we understandably chose to go with somebody not affiliated with you. He is now undergoing a new course of treatment, which will hopefully prevent any further damage. Another lie is that we "raved" about the trainer you forced us to hire. After being abused and attacked by you and Nick, I no longer wanted to associate with anyone in your orbit, which is why only my partner attended the two remaining sessions. Moreover, your claim that crating a heartworm-positive dog is necessary to "relax and decompress" may be true for some dogs. But as we told you, our dog was massively distressed by being crated. That is a dangerous state for a dog to be in when they have heartworm. So just because I chose not to follow your training method, which was harming my dog, does not mean I was "detached" from him in any way. Gina, you are NOT going to bully me into silence. Your M.O. is made crystal clear through my review and in others. You need to do some serious reflecting on the way you interact with people. You should also think long and hard before you respond with any further libelous and actionable statements. read more

We have had a great experience with adopting and fostering with Korean K9. The thing that we have been most impressed by is how much they care for and love the dogs and all animals. If they seem strict at times, it is because they want the absolute best care and life for the precious souls that they have taken responsibly for. Currently we have our newly adopted dog Bowie and we are fostering Juno. They were both surrendered by their owners and KK9R have taken them back into their care to find them new loving homes. They have supported us in tangible ways-with food and medicines and also with emotional care for us and for the dogs. THIS ORGANIZATION IS A SCAM. I have strong doubts as to whether they actually rescue dogs from Korea or whether they're just buying them and reselling them at a high price. They require you to buy a specific brand of dog food and undergo specific training from an approved trainer. All of this screams profiteering. They also take advantage of people who volunteer to foster for them, using them as free labor all the while continuing to profit from selling these puppies to Americans to capitalize on their first world savior complex and love of cute dogs. They continue to peddle the sob story of "rescuing" these dogs from "meat farms". Do not believe them. These guys are taking your money and laughing all the way to the bank. After having several bad experiences with this organization, we found Last Chance for Korean Dogs on Facebook which is a small but legit operation directly out of Korea. They will ship you a REAL rescue dog directly from Korea for the cost of the flight. They're very reasonable and understand that not everyone can be a rich New Yorker who doesn't work and stay at home 24/7 and can afford organic dog food. Don't support Korean K9 rescue. Korean K9 Rescue is legit serious about the well-being of their animals. I adopted our sweet dog Mipha (formerly Sera) from KK9R and subsequently have fostered several dogs for them. Adopting (and fostering) a rescue dog, as gorgeous and sweet as they are, is a TON of work!! They really need specific care and it is in the adopter's and dog's best interest that KK9R is very selective. Doing so will set both the dog and their adopter up for success. I have been so impressed by the work and dedication of everyone at this rescue. As a foster parent I write detailed daily + weekly notes about my dog's eating and (ahem.. pooping) habits, as well as their behavior. Gina and Vicky literally read every note and they know their rescues extremely well. They are also basically on-call if I have any questions or concerns. As a result, even though I ugly cry when my foster gets adopted, I know they are going to a family that is fully vetted, well-matched and committed to loving them. For the adoption experience, there were a number of organizations I could have gone with as I was specifically looking to adopt a Jindo mix. I chose to go with KK9R because 1. My co-worker was a foster for them and she told me they were legit but more importantly 2. The dogs were already brought over to the US from Korea so the process was much smoother, quicker and less stressful than I could have imagined. Clear expectations were set early on with an opportunity to meet Mipha (Sera) before finalization to make sure the match was okay. The level of vetting involved actually helped me to see that this was a real rescue that truly cared about their animals. read more

I had contacted several rescue centers and KK9 was very responsive and professional which was a great experience for me. You can tell that they take great care of the dogs and they make sure to screen candidates for both fostering and adopting dogs. I rarely write a review but I have to because I am the biggest fan of Korean K9! I was a foster and foster failed very quickly. I adopted my dog, Hazae, from KK9R. I have learned so much since I adopted my dog from KK9R. My dog was rescued from an abandoned shelter and wasn't really exposed to many interactions with humans. However, KK9R gave specific instructions and hands-on support to set the right expectation and make the dog's adjustment period as smooth as possible. KK9R support doesn't stop at the point of adoption. This is one of the best parts about adopting a dog from them. It feels like you are part of the community KK9R always has your back. A good example is that - I also encountered one of the most traumatic situations, which was losing my dog. I didn't follow the guidance and instruction to have a harness, a GPS collar, and a leash on. This instruction was repeated by KK9R multiple times and I only had one GPS collar on my dog. My dog slipped out of this and ran away. My boyfriend called the KK9R hotline right away and got clear instructions on what to do. KK9R also required us to sign up for 24hrPetWatch which helped track down the dogs when their microchips are scanned. We luckily found our dog within 3 hours!! The founder scanned the microchip on the dog and we received a call. Because of all these safety measures that KK9R has reinforced, we could get our dog back. Also, lessons learned!! They truly care about their dogs and their dogs' wellbeing. I am always learning from them and I highly recommend KK9R, if you are adopting a dog. Getting a rescue is a lot of work and you need expert and ongoing support. For this, there's no other organization that's comparable to KK9R!! read more

I volunteered flying with a couple of rescues from Seoul to NYC 2 years ago and learned about Korean K9 Rescue. Ever since, I have been fostering dogs from them on and off for 2 years now. As someone who applied for fostering thinking it would be 'fun', I have to say how strict their rules and regulations are kind of took me back a little at the beginning. But during the process of fostering 7 (and counting) dogs that just flew for 14+ hours to a complete foreign place and have jet lags on the top of their previous traumas back home, I realized all of their guidelines are very necessary. And I am glad I can be a part of this amazing organization and the process helping Korean rescue dogs adjust in the new environment. More importantly, seeing every single dog I fostered found the perfect family beyond anything I could hope for each of their characters and conditions really warms my heart :) I recommend Korean K9 Rescue for any potential volunteers and adopters! read more

My wife and I adopted our dog Bean from Korean K9 in July 2020. Everything was done online at the time, but there was a long list of things we needed to do/meet in order to be approved for adoption and ready for our dog's arrival. I can imagine how some people might find the process intense, but I do believe it to be necessary. It didn't feel like they only cared about getting their dogs adopted, it felt like they cared about matching every dog with the best possible owner for that dog. They also pair you up with a mandatory trainer. Some of these dogs (although unbelievably cute) are not easy and require time, patience, and training but I promise you there is nothing more rewarding. Our dog has opened up beyond our wildest expectations. She went from a dog that didn't like to be touched to a dog that loves to cuddle, from a dog that was scared of being outside to a dog that loves to hike. She was so terrified of other dogs she would immediately poop if one got too close. Now, she tries to play with every dog. She was even at our wedding. It's been over 2 years and she still continues to open up and change. We've kept in touch with Korean K9 and now foster dogs with them. The foster experience is similar to the adoption experience in that they are very meticulous and have a specific process they want you to follow. They provide you with everything, including the crate, the leash, the collar, the food, and anything else your foster might need (like meds). They really care about their dogs and they do everything they can to make sure that their dogs are put in a position to succeed and thrive long term. read more

Like many people, I first discovered Korean K9 Rescue through Instagram. KK9R initially catches your eye with great photos and posters (their themed photoshopped pictures of different dogs every week always brings a smile to my face!), but there is a real reason beyond the promotion as to why they are able to sustain success and a strong community -- the not-for-profit organization is driven by people who care deeply about and prioritizes the happiness of the dogs. My girlfriend and I adopted a 6 month old jindo/spaniel mix back in April 2019 and he changed our lives! We'll forever be grateful to KK9R for rescuing him from Korea and bringing him here. It is a privilege to adopt and my advice is to have some patience during their process (there are a lot of people involved, most of them new volunteers, so it is understandable that things may sometimes seem a little hectic). Other pluses: Korean K9 Rescue offers advice/support for dogs and their adopters long after the adoption process! Their active responses to my questions on instagram and email gives me a lot of reassurance. I also love the community of alumni dogs that KK9R encourages. My family had a great experience with Korean K9 Rescue. We learned about this rescue through a co-worker who adopted with them some time ago. We live several hours away, but arranged to come to the NYC area to meet Rachel (now Olive), one of the dogs being fostered locally, the day before an adoption event. We went through the application and telephone interview process as well and then attended the adoption event the next day and luckily were able to add our new furry friend to our household. We found the application and interview process to have an appropriate level of rigor. We'd been told not everyone gets a specific dog or is rubber stamped into dog ownership. We appreciate that given the huge changes these rescues have endured in coming from across the globe. There is a list of essential items before you're allowed to adopt, which can be purchased at a local pet shop (nice to support the local neighborhood), which we didn't have a problem getting - it will all be put to good use in good time. Most important to the entire process was the community. This rescue is trying to make a difference in the lives of dogs that otherwise wouldn't be alive. The foster we met was caring and a wonderful person - we stay in touch regularly. Each member of Korean K9 Rescue who we had the opportunity to interact with obviously took pride in the work they do. The lives of many of the successfully adopted pets thrive on social media - including Olive. We've adopted before, will adopt again, and have nothing but good vibes to share about KK9R. read more

Warning: Super long review! Foster Experience: I started fostering with Korean K9 in August 2020. Pretty immediately after submitting my application, they emailed me back to follow up. Their foster application process is pretty thorough -- general questions on your lifestyle and experience, reference checks, landlord check, and a home video check. In total I have fostered more than 15+ dogs/puppies through KK9 and one other American domestic rescue. What I really appreciate about KK9 is the support they give their fosters. Every dog I get comes with food, bully sticks, and they often throw in some poop bags and toys to help out -- unlike the other rescues I worked with (they typically depend on you to pay out of pocket for food and toys). Financially, they make it easy for anyone to volunteer and foster. They only require you to purchase reusable dog supplies like crate and bowls. The only thing they do not provide is transportation. If vet care is needed, they cover all associated costs at their partner vet. Most dogs coming into rescue care (doesn't matter if it's domestic or international) are exposed to something called "kennel cough" which can be comparable to the common cold for humans. They always provide medication to help combat this if sneezing or coughing surfaces after the dog is in foster care. I appreciate always being given a supply of meds if needed, so I don't have to run back and forth across town to get supplies. They highlight clearly that their dogs coming from Korea are often shy/timid/fearful and when I did have a pup that fit that description, their foster managers/coordinators were always available to schedule a video call and give me tips or help me with any issue I was struggling with. Furthermore, they have a regular cadence of adoption meetings so I know that my foster dog will have a good shot at finding their forever family. I decided to continue fostering more exclusively with KK9 for those reasons. I 100% recommend fostering with KK9 if you want to work with an organization that has structure and support, and if you are a patient individual who can help a dog in need! Attached are some adorable photos of my foster pups! Adoption Experience: KK9 is very clear about their rules and expectations for potential adopters. Their fee is higher due to being an international rescue. American ones in NYC are typically $450-550 but KK9 is $450-750 depending on age of the dog. While higher, it is very reasonable as it includes the international travel fee for the dog and they are typically spayed/neutered, and given the medical care & vaccines prior to adoption. Along with that, their philosophy in raising a dog is on their website. KK9 is committed in finding adopters who are best suited for the dog in question's needs (not whoever is first interested), that also agree with their philosophy. I think they are very transparent about their requirements and it's disappointing to see other reviewers complain about this. There are many great domestic American rescues that might be better aligned with those reviewers. I think their strict and thorough adoption process makes sense and does not detract from their rescue mission at all. I support them on this. I decided to adopt/foster-fail with KK9 in November 2021. Their two rules about foster failing is that you have to have fostered with them 3 times before foster failing, and you have to purchase the same tailored supply list and trainer session for your dog (just as any other adopter would need to). Foster failing was overall straight-forward and simple as I was already well aware of their rules, being part of the organization as a foster. Gina and the team were all very kind throughout the process. While I do wish I could have chosen my own trainer, the trainer they paired me with has already given me great tips to help me develop a stronger bond with my forever dog. Lastly, while I don't have too much post-adoption experience, I know their alumni community is strong. I see alumni organizing pack walks together, and just generally helping each other out when the need is there. I'm glad to be part of this community now. General thoughts about the rescue: I truly believe in KK9's rescue mission. If you follow their instagram (koreank9rescue and koreank9rescue.kr) as well as some of their rescue partners in Korea, they detail all the work that is put in rehabilitating these dogs from traumatic environments. Whether they were from the dog meat trade, the korean animal shelter, or random strays in the village, they all get the medical treatment they need, they get socialization time at their bundang facility (in korea), and rehabilitation as needed. I can see how their strict rules and thorough process might not be for everyone, however I would still highly recommend adopting from Korean K9 if you also agree with their mission and philosophy. read more

Our adoption experience with Korean K9 has been great. They truly care for each and every dog, and the dogs have gone through an incredible journey from Korea to be here in New York up for adoption. Of course they want to make sure each dog is adopted to the right family. My fiancé and I went to an event and applied for 2 pups, but didn't get the call back. To be honest we were very sad! But I found the dogs on Instagram (so many of them get their own profile) and found that they are living amazing lives with great people. How can you be upset when that's the case? It's the whole point of the rescue organization! We went back a few weeks later when Santo (fka Toto) caught our eye. We ended up applying for him and one other dog. We discussed at length with everyone at the event that we had two cats, and Santo had been fostered in a household with a cat, so they thought we would be a good match. During the interview process, letting them know that this was our second round applying definitely helped. It helped show that we were serious about adopting a dog, had done the research, and truly understood the responsibility that comes with it. They require you to buy certain supplies, but that only helps set you up for success. Rescue dogs are not easy, they require a lot of time and patience. You have to make sure you can advocate for the dog and help them live a happy life. We love Santo so much and he's brought so much joy to our lives!
