Golden doodle parents beware We've had our puppy for about 3 weeks, we got him at 12 weeks, at this point his fur was getting a bit longer and we wanted a nice shower complimented with an amazing grooming, I have been asking all of my fellow dog parents in the neighborhood and everyone referred me to skillman pets, I was looking so forward, she actually took him in on the same day which i was pleased about because he definitely needed shower, when we came back to drop him off the lady at the front asked what we wanted and I told her he's a golden doodle, 3 months old, we've had him for 3 weeks, so obviously this is our first time doing this and we had zero clue but we wanted him to look better than we left him, she asked couple of questions ( because the groomer spoke zero English) about taking off hair between his eyes etc, ( inside I'm thinking they're going to use scissors not shaving it ) and I said ok to everything because they're the professionals not me, I was excited for his new haircut because he looked so adorable and had such a baby face, and when we came back to pick him up, he looked and acted like a completely different dog, when they brought him out I did not recognize him at all, I was completely shocked and nervously laughed the entire time, they completely managed to change his whole entire look, I dropped off a 3 month old golden doodle and came back to old looking dog, at first I was shocked and surprised, I expressed that he looked different and I was confused to why they did that to him, she brushed me off and told me "it's hair it'll grow back" "this is what you told us to do" when she knows my puppy looked like a complete shit show, and I trusted them as professionals to do their job, i paid and tipped the groomer because He spent hour and a half with the puppy and he deserves a tip, and when we got back home my puppy was just off he was not himself, he wasn't happy and perky he avoided me, he didn't wanted to leave the house, I wanted to kiss and pet him he didn't allow me to do that, he was very off, I tried to cool down and give it a couple of days and see how his fur and he would turn out to be, I had anxiety and stress the entire weekend it was so sad, btw my puppy was completely potty trained, but as free the appointment he peed on my couch the same day and rug the next day for the first time which he never did before and we were in shock about, anyway I came back on Monday and she immediately told me the groomer wasn't there so they cannot fix his haircut, I explained to her that I took two hours out of work and I can not come back and I don't mind whoever's there to fix his fur, the poor guy didn't speak and couldn't hear because was deaf (God bless his heart) tried to fix his haircut, he did try to make the head area look better but however he took off more from his nose muzzle area, which made him look more poodly, so overall I am angry and extremely disappointed, I trusted them to do their job with my puppy but it seems like they gave my puppy ptsd and completely changed him (in a bad way) I don't know how long will it take for him to get back his look, puppies grow super fast and it looks like he'll have a messed up hair and attitude for Thea next couple of months, also the front desk girls rolled their eyes at me the entire time which is bizarre, this establishment is super unprofessional and selfish, read more

Let's face it: pets can get a little too hairy and sometimes it's not the most flattering look. The staff at Skillman Pets does a bang up job with every dog or cat that comes through the store. They work with everyone on achieving a kind of style that works well and will honor various budgets for those of us who can't afford this sort of thing frequently. What's more impressive to me is the fact they do a good job with dealing with all kinds of breeds. The fussy dog or the scaredy cat has nothing to worry about. I waited a few days to cool off and calm down before posting this review, so i can be calm and objective (I'm still upset though). The bottom line is: PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T GET YOUR DOG'S HAIRCUT HERE. The bath, etc they gave her was fine. I can't tell if they did nails, teeth, or anal glands, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they did. The rest of my review will focus on the haircut. My first clue to turn and run away should have been when I asked for my dog to be trimmed but not terribly short, because she had a beautiful coat. I was informed that they have two modes: buzz cut, or short but just long enough to not see skin. I'm no expert in dog cuts but it seems like a capable groomer should be able to do more than just 2 lengths. But whatever, we're already there and she's been very hot as it gets warmer so we opted for the short-but-no-skin cut. When we got her back ... YIKES. Yes, it was shorter than we wanted, but I already knew to expect that. What infuriated me is how POORLY the cut was done. Fur is now all different lengths. Some parts look completely grizzled or chunks missing, like the clippers "slipped" and went too deep. No straight or even cuts pretty much anywhere. I've attached some pics so you can judge for yourselves. I saw this, gritted my teeth, paid and left. We won't be back. If i wanted a sloppy uneven cut I woulda grabbed a pair of clippers and taken a shot at it myself and saved the $85. By the way, I know people will ask themselves "why didn't you tell them to fix the mistakes"... well, the only way to even out uneven fur is to cut the rest of it to match, and it was already way shorter than we wanted. Few more things: 1) the grooming part of the business is cash only. My guess is that's either because they're running that part of the store without paying taxes, or they know the quality of their work is woefully sub-par and are afraid of chargebacks. 2) all the people that we interacted with were actually very nice to both us and our dog. This local pet shop is the best! The staff is extremely helpful to a new puppy owner and is always helping/giving tips with a smile. I went an got a partial groom (head only) in December and a full groom yesterday (January) and they did a fantastic job. So many people have been asking me where I got my puppy groomed and I have and will continue to recommend Skillman Pets to all pet owners! She was such a fluffy mess before and even brushing twice a day would not be enough precent her coat from tangling. I went in, showed them a picture and asked for their second opinion on how it would look on my puppy, they provided me with their opinions. Additionally, after their work was complete, they showed me my puppy and continued to make revisions to the grooming until I was satisfied! Disappointed...We have been clients for 5 years and we never complained until recently. A new female groomer took care of our dogs and they both came back with an ear infection. Also, she did not cut the hair properly around my dog's private areas and paws. Again we are disappointed and miss the former groomer, a really skillful man. We are moving so we won't come back. I have a himalayan cat and his fur is pretty long.. He really hates it when i tried to brush his fur.. He always bite or scratch me whenever i tried to brush him. Because he likes to sleep on his back, he's matted allover his neck and back so i decide to give him a furcut since brushing is not an option for me to do.. So i came across skillman pets thru yelp and after reading reviews and comparing to a few other places I decided to give skillman pets a try.. I called them to make an appointment and the girl who picked up the phone was really nice and friendly.. She gave me a price quote and explained a little bit on what they do and how long it will take. She said that the groomers is only available on certain days,i think she said Tue,Wed and Fri I'm not sure.. So i went there and i talked to the groomer about my cat telling him my worries and how my cat normally behave.. I told him i want to give my cat a lion cut since he's matted almost allover his back.. My cat is very sensitive so i was a little worried that he'll get stressed out.. They told me tht they'll call me when they finish.. So it took about almost 2 hour i think.. I came back to pick up my cat and he looks really cute like a mini lion. But he shaved the tail a little too much so the end of my cat's tail is not as puffy.. After i got home i was checking my cat and it seems like he didn't clean his ears or trim his nail.. I don't know if he forgot to do it or he jut didn't do it thoroughly.. A little disappointed because of that otherwise I'd give it a 5 star. Overall i will still come back and recommend this place because it's really affordable compare to other cat grooming place. Probably the worst grooming I've ever been to. Came here with my new puppy to get his first haircut and instead of coming out cute, he came out looking like an old man. I asked to cut everything and leave half an inch all over but I felt that they only trimmed half an inch instead of leaving half an inch from him. I asked them to make my dog look cute but the face came out to look like an old man. I've been to other grooming places with my other dog and my other dog is much bigger and other places charge much less than this place. They also do a much better job at listening to instructions. When we got back, I had to trim a little more hair on my puppy, myself. read more

To all the people that want a good cut on their pets, they have to understand that you are giving hair cuts to animals not humans. Every animal will respond differently. Trying to find a cat groomer isn't easy. I came across Skillman Pets luckily right here on Yelp. Making an appointment was nice and easy. Their Cat groomer is only there are certain days. Day of appointment Skillman Pets called me to remind I had an appointment that day which i thought was very cool of them. As I arrived I met the very nice Kiana. I was welcomed to their nice little store in Woodside with a great smile and personality. Kiana introduced me to Andres which is their groomer. I showed him my long hair cat that had major knots and dreads. Andres shook my hand and assured me he would take great care of my cat. Kiana called me in advance to let me know my cat was almost done and giving me enough time to drive there. When I picked up my cat Andres did a fantastic job at shaving him down and giving him a lion cut. Skillman Pets if a great little neighborhood store with a super friendly staff. read more

I cannot say enough good things about the groomers at Skillman Pets. I have an 8 year old shih tzu and her hair tends to get unruly when its grows longer. I bring her in looking like a shaggy mop and when i collect her she looks like a new dog! I absolutely love the work they do on my dog. The groomers are super patient with my dog. If you are thinking about bringing your dog here for grooming, I would strongly urge you to reconsider. Our 9-year-old Pomeranian, Nico, had her back leg broken while in the care of the Skillman Pets staff -- and owner Rios' behavior in the aftermath of the unfortunate situation was nothing short of deplorable. On May 23rd, we took our dog, Nico, a completely healthy and happy 9.5-pound Pom, to Skillman Pets for a wash and haircut. We had taken her to SP a few times before with no incident. When we dropped her off that day, she was in good spirits and walking on all four legs, as normal. We were called to pick up Nico 2.5 hours later. It was immediately obvious that something was amiss--she was whimpering and looked traumatized. When my husband got her outside and put her down, she was limping with her back left leg up in the air. We took her home thinking perhaps her nails had just been cut too short, but it became increasingly obvious something was seriously wrong. We took her to the vet, where the doctor told us her left rear femur was broken in half as the result of severe trauma. Her injuries required emergency surgery due to the risk the fractured pieces of bone posed to her. When we went into Skillman Pets to ask about what exactly had happened while Nico was in the groomer's care, a female employee stressed several times to us that when animals are brought into SP with existing conditions, the owners are called immediately before any grooming takes place. We received no such call, further cementing the fact that the break happened while Nico was in Skillman Pets' care. However, despite Rios telling us that the groomer in question was fired after the incident, we were repeatedly told "nothing" happened to Nico while she was there, and we were even accused of bringing her in with a pre-existing broken leg. We were never allowed to view the security tapes after repeatedly asking to see them, and were told over and over by Rios that they showed "nothing" happened. But, after seeing where the cameras were placed, it seemed impossible to me that these cameras could record anything happening in the back washing room, and especially not inside the wash tub. After originally telling us he would "make it right" and cover our vet and surgery bills, which totaled over $7,000, Rios reneged on his promise after seeing the bills and told us we'd need to sue him if we wanted to be reimbursed for the surgery Nico needed as a result of his employees' negligent care. We ended up having to file a claim ourselves with Skillman Pets' insurance company. We understand that accidents happen, and don't think anyone at Skillman Pets purposely hurt our dog. But while Nico's injuries were very upsetting, even more upsetting was being accused of bringing our dog in to get groomed with an already broken leg, and the stress that Rios and his staff put us through by refusing to admit that anything happened to Nico in their care (this made it very difficult to let the doctors know what exactly had happened to her). I urge anyone looking to have their dog groomed in Sunnyside to look elsewhere. read more

The owner of Skillman Pets goes out of his way to research the best natural and holistic dog and cat food brands and stocks only the best rated ones. Couple that level of care with the owner's motto of ensuring absolute customer satisfaction and you have an ideal recipe for a small local neighborhood business. His store is ample, not cramped nor overwhelming. For those who do not feed their pets the brands he stocks, there are bowls, toys, collars, leashes, kennels, beds, wee wee pads, clothing, rawhide chews, bowls, shampoos, supplements, mouthwashes, and hairball treatments. Furthermore, the owner gives free food samples and really dedicates time to his customers--he offers advice and asks questions to determine which food (and flavor) your pet may prefer. There are grooming services on site available and this is especially ideal in a neighborhood with so many pet owners. The entire staff is warm and friendly. They had a rocky start, but responded immediately to neighborhood requests (some of which, unfortunately, bordered on violent) to not sell pets. Instead he offers his store as space for people to come and offer homeless pets up for adoption. He could have just agreed not to sell dogs, but he goes that extra step, that extra mile. Dear Skillman Pets, Somehow finding you guys that day while wandering the streets and being nowhere close to home, I stumbled upon your quaint petshop. I've been to many many petshops and while they had largers isles and more shiny things to look at, it was the receptionist that really sold me on to bringing my baby Rocky ("the grumpy German Shepherd") here. For most of you who don't know, he has suffered "skin allergies" for the past 4 years and bringing him to the vet did absolutely nothing. Rocky was given antibiotics everyday and I watched him become skinnier and skinnier. Desperate for a change, I changed him to raw food and proceeded to get him groomed (2 months now) at Skillman Pets. Not only did he smell GREAT after, he didn't show signs of allergic reaction to the products. (I'm pointing at you guys, PETCO & PETSMART-even when I repeatedly told them Rocky was very allergic, he would smell like the perfume factory and would itch after his baths) They are GREAT, warm, and they really love my dogs as much as I do. My frenchie is going there now to get groomed as well! They offer additional services like "dog taxi" but sadly not to my area :( and if you are closeby they deliver your food too ! read more

I've brought my dog here a handful of times already and have always been 100% satisfied. Today it just wasn't the same. My dog was previously groomed by a gentleman who I believe was hearing impaired and he would cut my pup exactly how I asked. Today he was not there. The cut was a little shorter in the face then I would have liked but still good. He is clean and smells good and they actually clipped his nails low unlike other places who have seemed almost afraid. My 3 stars are for the lack of communication. When I made the appointment I made it a point to ask if the new groomer could do a blue Mohawk like he had previously done. I always bring my own color. She said as long as the groomer knows how absolutely. The woman on the phone remembered us and even said she had a picture of my furbaby. I get there and asked if they can do it and she said she knows how there was no time because they were to busy. Had I had a clue that was a possibility I would have went closer to home but I went specifically because they are the only place who has known how to do the blue. Secondly, I was told about 2 hours. At almost 3 hours later I call to see if he was ready I was asked to hold on. I heard a "yes" in the background and the was told 5-10 minutes and that he was getting ready to call me. I would take my boy back here if I needed too. They are nice and like I said I'm not totally displeased with the cut but considering I came home and I tossed the color on his head myself I can easily go elsewhere. I thought of bringing my Lhasa Apso puppy here, because he hated being groomed by the folks at Triple A on Northern Blvd. He never liked it there & would make every attempt to escape! The first time he met the guy groomer at Skillman Pets, the groomer was petting him then immediately my puppy followed the groomer and they became friendly with each other. I was surprised because I expected my puppy to whimper because I was leaving him with a stranger, but for some strange reason, he trusted the groomer! Only after 1 hour, my puppy was already done and looked really cute with his new summer hair cut. He was even gifted a cute Hells' Angels-looking bandana for good behavior by the groomer! Compare to Triple A, the staff kept my puppy for 9 hours before he's ready to be picked up! Maybe that's the reason why he hates it so much to be there! The grooming fee was $65, which is $10 more than what Triple A charges, but my puppy was so happy & comfortable here at Skillman Pets. As long as he is feeling this way, I could care less about the money. read more

Its just 'ok' for me when it comes to dog grooming. Primarily because the woman (can't recall her name. .black hair, thick glasses) both times gave my poodle a sharp angular cut as opposed to the soft teddy bear cut I requested. Both times it completely changed his look and I was not pleased. I am not confrontational and its not like she could regrow my dogs hair that was cut so just ended up not going back. Small store with a great selection of the healthiest foods, snacks and toys. Great staff. Paola, lovely young woman behind the counter, is delightful, helpful and attentive. We haven't used the groomer, but on several occasions, he's offered his professional opinion on pet care.
