Overall, we are satisfied with Petco's grooming service and especially with Ingrid. She is incredibly gentle with our puppy and very professional. This was our second time bringing our dog back and our puppy wasn't afraid to get groomed. She seemed very comfortable with Ingrid -which says a lot and gives us real peace of mind. The only downside was the pricing. It felt like a bait and switch though that seems more like a corporate-level issue than anything on Ingrid's end. The initial estimate was $80, the app later showed $114 when I confirmed the appointment and I ultimately ended up paying about 40% more than the expected initial quote or $133. I understand there's a cost to getting your dog groomed.. but pricing transparency should be available. That said, Ingrid truly does a wonderful job. read more

Very rude staff that is not helpful. It seems like everyone hates being there and just wants you to suffer with them. For example, I asked a floor staff to open the restroom for me and she told me to go ask someone at the register or ask another customer (wth?). I went to the register and they paged her to come open!! She's only one example 4 other staff members that I had the unfortunate experiences with. I have a betta fish in a small tank and as I ready about the life spans I learned in order to live a happy life is needed a bigger tank so I decided I was going to petco to get a tank or two haha and get another betta . I've been to this store before years ago when I had a dog , but it's been a while since he's been gone for 5 years . As I go to the address I once knew , I found out they moved a block over . So the entrance is a bit confusing since the sign outside is really not that visible and they now also have a vet clinic . Finally make it in and the whole place look great with a big variety of things but not well explained in terms of what is where , such as Cats, Dogs , Fish etc. After walking around the store I realized the fish were upstairs. Get there and there's lots of people but very few employees , had to go around the store a few times to find someone to help me since I had a few questions about their member discount etc . Found a lady who gave me the info and I went me happy way shopping . Once I was done I had to look for someone at the register since I passed by 3 of them and there wasn't anyone to checkout . When I finally get someone not helpful at all didn't even offer me a bag ( and I had a lot of stuff ) than the person behind me on the line gets helped and offered a bag while I was still at the register trying to figure it out my packing situations . The store is certainly beautiful with a great variety of items and pets . But the customer service definitely needs to be upgraded . And they should have someone at the registers for checkout and around the store in case someone has a question . read more

DO NOT COME HERE FOR GROOMING The worst customer service I've ever experienced, had my dog wait in a crate for five hours before they started. They called me an hour in saying he was aggressive and couldn't groom him, which is the furthest thing from the truth. Every other groomer has said that he is the nicest dog to work on the truth is is they were really far behind, when asking the other workers if he was aggressive, they said no he wasn't. I feel the need to clarify a grossly misleading review left by Yoly L. from Bayside. I remember her, I was there that day leaving my doggie with Joey. She held up the long line while ranting like a lunatic about the cut not being right, which was ridiculous, several of us told her the puppy looked adorable and very cute. And he did apologize and so did the two managers she asked to come by. She seemed hell bent on causing a scene because she knew she would get the expensive haircut for free. We were getting pissed off at her antics and she kept giving us dirty looks insisting "she was not paying for this cut." That was her objective, to con her way out of paying for cut that a stylist did for her, extremely well I might add. The rest of us in the line looked at each other, knowing what she was doing. Not only did she get away with not paying, now she's disparaging the salon and the stylists we all trust and love to take our pets to. She's just vile. read more

This review is about the grooming services at the Union Square store. I took my 4-month-old puppy for his first grooming appointment today. I gave very specific instructions to the groomer, Joey -- I only wanted his face, paws, and rear trimmed. I made it clear several times that I did not want his coat cut, as I wasn't ready for him to lose his soft puppy fur. Joey acknowledged and confirmed my request. However, when I picked up my puppy, he had been given a full haircut. All of his hair, including his brows, had been trimmed short. When I brought this up, Joey did not take responsibility and instead kept saying that my puppy looked cute and that he had used scissors, not clippers -- missing the point entirely. Although I was not charged for the service, I did not receive an apology from either the groomer or the two supervisors I spoke with. I'm extremely disappointed that my puppy's first grooming experience was mishandled. read more

I've never been a huge fan of Petco. We order most of our pet supplies online from other retailers, and the only time I will visit a Petco or Petsmart in person is if I have run out of a food item and need to replenish my supply same-day. But today I was looking for a coat for a recently adopted pup and wanted to he able to check out sizing in person. We first stopped at the Petsmart near Madison Square Park and it was a total bust. Very little inventory and the whole place is in pretty sore shape. On the way home, though, we stopped into this Union Square Petco, which is (as of about a year and a half ago) now in a new location and is billed as Petco's flagship NYC store. I was absolutely dumbstruck by how nice it is: so bright, beautifully designed, and clean, it feels more like a high-end department store than a Petco. In addition to the usual products, they seem to carry and highlight some additional brands- of the variety I guess you would call luxury brands- that I haven't seen before. The veterinary and grooming areas look very nice, and the self-wash stations are especially gorgeous. We also overheard a group training class going on and it sounded quite decent. At $149 for six weekly sessions, I suspect it is an excellent value. Sadly I did not end up finding a coat today that fit my new awkwardly shaped little buddy very well. However there is a wide selection of sweaters and coats, and a wonderful employee helped me try about five different designs on her in two sizes each. AND we took a fun family photo in the photo booth so did not leave totally empty handed! read more

Our tech in the vetco hospital was so helpful. She explained every thing and answered all the questions I asked. Ariel is truly an asset to the vetco company. When booking appointments be careful you can end up in wrong place. The distinguishion between the vaccine clinic and the hospital clinic is not told to until you arrive you are in the wrong one. I went in to buy a bunch of things for my new cat and the cashier who rang us up (wish I remembered her name) was so kind, attentive and engaging. Was asking us questions about the cat we're getting and wished us luck about our new cat. The store is well organized and they have plenty of selections for all animals. This store has decided to stake its future on the idea that pets are a rich person's accessory. Back when it was in the old location on the other corner of Union Square, it was a normal big-box pet store with a variety of normal items that a dog owner might want. Both my dogs loved going in there and sniffing around, and we'd always find something to buy. In the new location, everything is overpriced and precious. The layout is also just strange. They have created a creepy glass staircase that even freaks *me* out, let alone my somewhat high-strung animal. But you cannot get to the dog treats and accessories area without climbing it. This is what you get when you contract an idiot architect with "concepts" to design your store instead of asking, I dunno, an animal behaviorist. Also, extra annoying decision to stop carrying rawhides. They've decided these are unhealthy, and that a better choice is ultraprocessed animal by-products glued together into rawhide stick shape. I'm writing this review to warn everyone: do NOT take your dog to PETCO grooming. They shaved my mini golden doodle 100% without my consent, even though I left clear instructions not to do so. This reckless decision caused severe skin irritation, an extreme shift in my dog's mood, and visible psychological stress. What's worse, my dog is a certified service animal, and this trauma has disrupted her emotional stability and daily functioning. The damage they caused is unacceptable. I have already contacted PETCO to pursue formal action and request compensation for the harm done. This is not just poor service--it's negligent and harmful treatment of a defenseless animal. If you love your dog, please stay away from PETCO grooming. Your pet's physical and emotional well-being is not safe in their hands. read more

A beautiful entrance and so many new toys, treats, and accessories I've never seen at any other Petco location. There is also a self-wash station! I hate having to leave a review like this but it has to said! I've had my puppy for five months now, and have been going to this location for that long. My hair is always a very distinct color, and I usually go in after teaching my yoga class in the area. The security staff is racist! Without fail I get followed every single time I go in there. No one offers to help they just watch and follow me around. I even turned off my headphones once and heard them say over the walkie talkie "Watch him he's going down the stairs and towards the door. Even spoke with the General manager Jason Burris about my experiences. Every time I shop this one person that is part of the management team is always there and sees me when I shop and has the people follow me. Instead of offering to help the staff will stand around talk about their financial situations and holiday plans pretending to be stocking things in the area I'm in then when I move they all move the same way. As well as follow me to the register to watch to see if I'm gonna pay for everything in my cart. I worked in retail for a good portion of my career. So I know when someone is being watched or followed. I will start to record the staff as they follow me to show the racial harassment I experience in this location. read more

Kind of a mega store of pet stores. New puppy? Ask for Annette upstairs on the second floor. She understood I was on a fixed income and hooked me up with exactly the right items to both stimulate my puppy and keep her healthy while not breaking the bank. All of the food/toys/treats she suggested were immediately loved! She knew exactly what I needed before I did. If you do have a ton of money to spend on your pet, you could really go to town here. They have an apparel department, okay? Plus, I was also able to connect with quality brands like "Whole-Hearted", which is not carried by online competitors. This new petco is beautifully designed and doesn't feel like your usual petco at all. Most of employees and the manager I've encountered are super nice and friendly and happy to answer your question. The problem I have is with the cat adoption agency and their worker verbally attacking just because I asked a genuine question. There were other witnesses and confirmed that it was him and not me. When I proceeded ask why he was being nasty he said because he has to repeat himself multiple times. That's no excuse to take it out on me. read more

The first floor feels dedicated to dog apparel, and the staff crammed into the upstairs area seem overwhelmed with how many products are in their section. Especially fish. If it wants to be a dog-parent-specialized store then it should be that, but having the rest of the store crammed into the top floor feels like the worst option. read more

WHAT IS UP WITH THIS PETCO NEVER EVER HAVING SHOPPING BAGS?? More than once, I've had to leave behind stuff I wanted to buy because they didn't have bags until I stopped shopping here for anything bigger than can fit in my purse. I'm usually stopping in on the way home from work for something last minute, so I don't bring one of my hundreds of reusable shopping bags. They've recently started trying to sell me even more reusable shopping bags, which isn't great for the environment because I can't fit any more in my apartment and I imagine a lot of New Yorkers feel the same. Whoever is responsible for keeping the store stocked with shopping bags is costing the store money and making its employees miserable, having to tell each customer to carry purchases out in their hands and onto the subway. Grooming service is AWFUL! Let's first start that we made appointment and once we arrived they said that they had to cancel it, without letting us know, so we had to reschedule. When we came second time, they took our dog, and after 2 hours they called us saying to urgently pick up Maya, that they couldn't finish the groom because she was too active. They returned her with shred haircut completely unfinished, so she looks like she has a lichen, that other dog owners don't let us come close to their dogs. And lastly they charged us money for that "beautiful" groom but with discount. The new store is an absolute disaster. The employees at Barnes & Noble know more about animals than the "store partners" that Petco now employs. The Self-Wash station is laughable and a total mess. The grooming salon is filthy for a store that just opened. The JustFoodForDogs area of the store is probably the cleanest and is the only part of the store that has trained staff... And with the emphasis on their less than award winning Vet care (Vetco) and new hospital, I expect this joint to be shuttered within a year. Basically, Petco took a perfectly good store and ruined it. They are trying WAY too hard to attract a younger demographic that cannot afford to live in the area. Wow this location sells delicious isopods for your reptiles. You will have to search for these by the register upstairs though, there is an AMAZING VARIATION!! THE young lady who helped me with my purchases for my skink was super awesome!!! I love this location and it's very very rare to be able to get yummy variations of bugs for our pets, so check these out and make sure you get some for your reptile! The isopods were very healthy, and there are different types of isopods here as well. read more

Vetco Union Square annual appointment for Heartgard medication for my dog. Did bloodwork and told vet tech that I would be ordering the next day via Petco.com and they said no problem, the new prescription would be available to confirm my account. Placed order and received notice that order was canceled. Followed up to learn that there was NO PRESCRIPTION. What did I pay for? Just the blood test apparently. Can I get a prescription? Not without coming back with my dog. Waste of time, waste of money. This is the most basic service that could be offered at a vaccine clinic for dogs. Beyond frustrated. read more

This location is okay, it does have an odd layout. If you take a cart, you have to take the elevator to the second floor then come back down to check out. They have limited selection for some of the dog food brands like Hill's Pet in store (prescription required wet foods are on the 1st floor). Petco in-store and corporate management allow mistreatment of the KittyKind rescue cats and kittens on display at the "new" Petco on Union Square. The enclosures are unsafe for the animals because people can get close to them and stick their fingers into the large air holes, possibly injuring the kittens or passing disease to them. Some owners allow their dogs to jump up and at the animals or bark at them. The KittyKind folks put a sign near the enclosures to ask people not to stick their fingers in the holes or touch the cats. Petco in-store management made them take the sign down. My emails to corporate get b.s. answers. They just don't care about the health of the animals that have, in some cases, already been traumatized through abandonment, living in a feral colony or worse. read more
