When I worked on Capitol Hill I used to love this place, came back today and it was an utter disappointment. First, our waitress came back with the wrong drinks, so when we ordered we shrugged to one another and expected our food orders to be wrong. My order was missing the home fries that were included in my dish and my friend's order was supposed to be a sausage omelette but it was just cheese. No one came back to check on us, we had to get up and get our own forks. When the check finally came, there was erroneous charges for a side of home fries (presumably the ones we never got) and for extra cheese (presumably for the cheese omelette that was supposed to be sausage.) no one came to collect our payment so we took the check back in for processing. I LOVE this diner! We ordered the chocolate chip pancakes and the vegetarian omelet. The food was great and the prices were very reasonable. The waitress was a little rude. i figured whatever let it go. We ordered our breakfast our food came out different times. ok let it go. Then I noticed there was a tiny hair in my food and that hit the spot The waitress thinking I was stupid because I owned a Restaurant before tells me it was the brush when they wash the dishes not even three minutes later a black cat is roaming around the diner jumping on the booth and the stools. We were starving one morning and saw nothing but good reviews. The pictures of the food seemed appetizing. After a short walk to the restaurant we were seated with polite and well-mannered waiters. The burrito sounded amazing because of how many ingredients they were packing into a flour tortilla. After a decent wait time, it came out and I was perplexed. For what was on my plate was not a burrito, but a quesadilla. I am not certain if in all the years they have been serving food, that anyone has bothered to check on the kitchen staff and inform them the distinct line between the two dishes. A decent quesadilla, but the loss of the ingredients as I tried to enjoy my "burrito," was a bit of a downer. Pete's is conveniently located around that Penn Ave. strip of Capitol Hill bars, so when I wake up in the neighborhood I can stumble into Pete's. There is almost always a table available, and you seat yourself. The specials are a great value and seem to have just the right combinations, coffee is refilled frequently, and they happily split checks as many ways as you want. They also indulge my wish to upgrade each special with "chocolate chip pancakes" (I like those better than the sweet potato ones but that's just my preference) without complaint, for only $1.00. Score! The decor is totally pleasant, there is outdoor seating, and my roommate has expressed the wish to kidnap the lady who runs the place as his own personal grandma. Go here!! read more

I wish I had something useful, funny, or cool to say about this place, but I really don't. It is just a sub-par diner that probably gets business because it is the only diner in the area. The food was just ok and the waitresses were really rushing people to get out quickly, which was strange since there were so many empty tables. Think about it - you're sitting in an office all day, everything is computerscreens and meetings and telephones and blah - and then you can go get some banana pancakes with bacon and eggs! I've heard several people rave about this place. Finally, a few weeks ago, a friend of mine took me. I honestly don't think this place is anything special. Let me preface this by saying I lived in NJ for a few years, which actually has more diners than any other state. So naturally, I'm well-versed in diner fare. If you eat there more than once, the owners and the servers will know your name -- and that's what I like about a neighborhood diner. The fare is simple but tasty comfort food. They are definitely one of the most memorable places I've stumbled upon in DC, if only because after two years I now associate this place with cherry blossoms, sunrise, and freezing my toes off at the Tidal Basin. Yes, this is the diner I come to on a Saturday morning at 7am after I've finished shooting the sun breaking over the Jefferson memorial and gotten my fill of magic hour blossom photos. I'd probably come more often, too, if I spent more of my weekend mornings in the city. After my first sunrise shoot, I was frozen and starving and just wanted a piping hot cup of coffee in my icy hands and a big plate of pancakes. A friendly couple from NC who I was chatting with at the Tidal Basin remembered Pete's from years before when they lived in DC and suggested I try it. I made the quick drive down Independence Ave. and found this little place without a problem, getting a parking spot right across the street. I'll never forget opening the door to a blast of warm air and the bustle of a busy neighborhood cafe on a weekend morning, with several locals seated at the bar with their Washington Post and giant plates of eggs and sausage. A big thank you to those nice folks from NC for pointing me (then a fresh DC transplant) in the right direction! My order is usually two chocolate chip pancakes, two eggs scrambled, and crispy bacon. The food is whipped out almost faster than you can take a sip of your first cup of coffee (also served instantaneously), and it is everything you'd expect at a good classic diner: cheap, no-frills, fresh, hot, and filling eats. I brought a couple of out-of-towners here last spring after they accompanied me for a windy, frigid morning at the Tidal Basin, and they loved it just as much as I do. We came here before we left DC to head back home to LI for a quick brunch. I got the grilled cheese and curly fries. One friend got French toast and the other got a BLT. Pretty good. Fries were nice and crispy. They said their food was good. Service was fast. We were a little skeptical at first when walking in but afterwards I'd say the 3 of us were satisfied. Despite stints living around the world and now back in DC, I continue to head back to Pete's every-so-often. It's amazing, some of the ladies still remember me! They take only cash, but there is an ATM around the corner; great prices.
