If I could give this place 6 stars I would. This was, by far, one of the best restaurant experiences I have ever had. 8 of us dined at Peter Havens to celebrate birthdays. We arrived a little late due to the snow, but the wait staff were pleasant when we arrived and had our table ready for us. We were seated in the back room. Being a large group of friends, I was initially worried by how quiet the restaurant was, fearing that we may disrupt the other guests. We quickly settled in, and ordered cocktails and appetizers. Our server, Em, was hilarious, friendly, and attentive. When we got our entrees, we passed plates around to try each other's dishes and not one of us was disappointed. Em recommended the filet to me and it was better than she described. We had veal, duck (to die for), fettuccini, swordfish, NY strips... it exceeded our expectations. They treated us to desserts on the house: the creme brulee and chocolate mousse were delectable. Em brought the chef out at the end of the night to meet us. They shared with us how long they've worked there and it shows in how they treat their guests - like family. I will be coming back to Vermont just for Peter Havens. So this is more about the service then the food right now. I showed up with my boyfriend for dinner. Unfortunately he has a chronic illness which sometimes causes major issues with food, digestive system and appetite. He has ulcerative Colitis... (Not to call him out but for anyone reading this and knows what it is you will understand) Tonight happened to be one of those nights that wasn't good. We ordered drinks, apps, and entrees. 2 min into the soup we knew we weren't going to make it through dinner. (This has NOTHING to do with the food, it's a disease that will be fine one second and hospital bound the next.) when my BF got up to step away for a second I knew we needed to leave and semi quickly, I pulled the server aside and let her know what was happening. She killed it, got him some tea to go, made all the arrangements to wrap our stuff to go without making any scenes. I can't tell you how much the servers attitude helped steer our night. I'm home now, eating what we ordered and it's pretty amazing. I can only imagine how it would be there. We had ordered the ginger carrot soup which was great. I needed a little salt but that's just me The duck liver pate (highlight of why I chose this place) smooth, creamy, absolutely mouth watering... (why don't more places have pet and Terrines?? Filet and chicken Both great but I need a redo. Thank again to the awesome waitstaff who made our night not so embarrassing. The best restaurant in Brattleboro. We are never disappointed here. Their must have mussels appetizer is flavorful and tender. The tuna tartare is ultra delightful. The duck superb as well as the filet mignon. A fine selection of wines and wonderful, efficient staff top it all off. You just cannot go wrong here. read more

Freaking amazing. I booked this restaurant several months ago for my honeymoon last week. When we walked in, the hostess walked us to our table, seated us and said congratulations. Nice touch, she made a note! Service was at a nice relaxing pace. Meals were not rushed out, which made me think someone was in the kitchen taking extra special care of our food. To start, we split the mussels appetizer. I do not eat mussels normally; they're not something that appeals to me. But these were incredible. I kept saying "just one more" and "after this one, I'm done" ... but I couldn't quit eating them. I had the oven roasted chicken breast for my entree. And sure, chicken can be boring. But for me personally, I LOVE chicken. This one, however, I think everyone would enjoy. The mustard sauce on it was so creamy, velvety and delicious. It was perfection. The chicken itself was incredibly moist. Hubby had the lamb chop, and he loved it. I took a bite and, not one to ever order lamb, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. Our dessert came out with candles in them to celebrate our wedding/honeymoon. So very nice. I had the apple tart with vanilla bean ice cream, and hubby had the chocolate flourless torte. Both were beautiful and sweet. My only regret was not finishing it as I was too full. I will come back to Brattleboro again some day, and when I do, a visit to Peter Havens will be at the top of my list. read more

What a lovely find in town. Food was delicious hard to choose from variety of options. And going on St Patrick's Day made the Irish Special a must. Our party of 5 are true seafood lovers. We've been to PH several times before, with generally above-average experiences. This week, to celebrate two birthdays, we were served by the very pleasant Adrian wonderfully prepared mussels as an appetizer - so good that before our main meals were delivered, we ordered a second serving to share. For the main mean, I received probably the best scallops I ever had, perfectly soft and creamy with a light brown toast on the sides. If you're on the hunt for an upscale experience at a reasonable price, this is likely the best deal in the Brattleboro area. read more

Food here is excellent and cheap. Being from Boston I am used to paying 50 dollars for steak of this caliber vs the 35 here. The steak was delicious and perfectly cooked and tender. We subbed the potatoes for the risotto and were glad we did because it was delicious, the veggies served (green beans and carrots) tasted local and delicious and were perfectly crispy yet not underdone. The Creme Brûlée was delicious, creamy and rich vanilla flavor. We don't drink but the drinks looked really tasty and unique. Shout out to the bar tender (don't know his name but tall guy that worked Saturday 01/22) he was so on top of everything with our orders, they accidentally gave us potatoes and he didn't even serve them just went back to kitchen to correct mistake, was also very friendly and personable. We made same day reservations later on a Saturday & were able to get bar seating. It was tight as bars are but didn't bother us People here (customers and staff) are very friendly. The tribe arrived in Brattleboro around 8:00 PM on Friday night. Front desk staff at our hotel recommended Peter Haven Restaurant. It was a delicious choice. We arrived around 8:30 and were seated immediately The restaurant space is so warm with red walls and dimmed lighting. Just a lovely, calming space that was helped by the delicious El Borracha (sp?) cocktail I ordered. The server was very efficient and helpful dealing with questions about food sensitivities. We ordered the ahi tuna ceviche, the garden salad, and the Caesar salad with duck confit for apps. The garden salad was fantastic. It had these amazing red wine poached pear slices. Put them in a bowl with some vanilla ice cream and you have the perfect dessert. For mains we ordered the filet of beef, the scallops, the rib eye and the pork shop special. Both beef dishes were amazingly delicious. The filet was the most tender steak I have ever had. I loved the pork too, but it was tad on the dry side. Special shout out to the duck fat fries which were incomparable. I kept stealing them off my friend's plate. If you cannot get enough of the fries and want more, head into the private dining space. When you walk in there, the aroma of frying duck fat wafts over you. It smelled like my mom's kitchen when she is making schmaltz. Just delicious. If they could bottle that smell I'd use it as room spray :) It was late and we were tired so we passed on dessert but look forward to coming back and trying a few. Everything we had was delicious. We were recommended this restaurant by our innkeeper and we are so glad we came! We came early on a Friday night without reservations and were seated immediately. We ordered the steak tartare, seared scallops, mushroom gnocchi, and pumpkin creme brulee. We enjoyed everything we ordered but our favorite dish was the scallops, which were huge and perfectly cooked/seared. We loved our meal so much, we wanted to come again the following day! We came here for my birthday dinner. Having been here in the past we knew we were likely to have a pleasant experience and we were not disappointed. We were warmly greeted upon arrival and waited approximately 10 minutes for our table. I like the fact that tables are a good distance from each other ensuring both privacy and a level of quietude during the meal. The decor is romantic which was nice since we were having an intimate dinner. Waitstaff is extremely professional and nice. Drinks are interesting and there is the usual assortment of beer and wine choices. The hubs had a cote du Rhône red wine which he was satisfied with and I had a specialty drink which was very good even though I now can't remember the name of the drink. The bread served was delicious and came with a seasoned olive oil-yum. We shared an artichoke "crab" cake for the appetizer which was really fantastic. Main courses: my husband had pheasant which he enjoyed and I had the gnocchi with a mushroom sauce. Both were top notch. The waitstaff brought a small serving of chocolate mousse for my birthday. I was pretty full but it was really smooth and chocolatey and I shared it with my husband. I like this place. My husband and have dined twice at Peter Havens - both times were beyond perfect. For a place of such elevated food and exceptional service, it's remarkably cozy - the comfort of a dinner at home with loving friends (yes - our dining companions were great - but that's not reason for the review). Stand outs from our last meal there were a Hen-of-the-woods mushroom starter ( not ordered by me, but sampled!). I'd never had those mushrooms and now I'm obsessed (full disclosure - I had the sensational escargot, but the mushrooms made me rather covetous)...but I doubt I have the skills to prepare them like the chefs at Peter Havens. For may main, I had the Pork Chop. I kid you not when I tell you that pork chop was incredible...and I've had some exceptional chops in my life. I was hoping they listed their purveyors on their site so I might get some myself...but I guess I'll just have to get up to VT again! I used to live in northern Massachusetts, but I'm in NYC now. For all the great places in Manhattan and Brooklyn, if I were asked where I'd love to go for dinner - Peter Havens would be in my top five. No question. read more

Really excellent, and quite a surprise. We were in the area to look at a college, and Peter Havens was recommended by the manager of our hotel. We had no expectations whatsoever. We certainly had no idea that there was a restaurant scene in Brattleboro. Peter Havens has a sophisticated cocktail menu with a wide variety of well-chosen wines by the glass (generously poured). For starters, super fresh Hog Island oysters for me, excellent tuna tartare for my wife. She had the pan roasted halibut (a special) and I had the grilled rainbow trout from the brief but intelligently organized menu. Both mains were excellent, and very well-plated with asparagus and a perfectly done lemon risotto. Our server was highly knowledgeable about the menu, and made a point of recommending seafood ("The chef is great with fish," she said, correctly). Deserts were a chocolate mousse that could have used more egg whites and a square of apple tart on outrageously good puff pastry with vanilla ice cream and a hint of marzipan. Not cheap, of course, but very good value for money. We hope our kid goes to school in the area, because we would love to become regulars here. read more

My girlfriend and I just had dinner here. The food was amazing. She had the ribeye steak and it was tender and tasty. I had the pork chop with risotto and friend Brussel sprouts and it was the best meal I have had out in ages. For such delicious food, the portions were generous and we left full and satisfied. The best part by far was the super friendly and attentive service. Our server was professional and extremely helpful. The front house manager, Maggie, made us feel at home. When I'm in Brattleboro to teach at Marlboro Grad School, I try to eat at least once at Peter Havens (since I discovered it). The food is as fine a quality as any Michelin star restaurant. I had the salmon last night for the first time there and it was cooked such that the inside was melt-in-your mouth underdone pink while the outside was perfectly cooked. The dish was moist, delicate and delicious. I also have to give a shout-out to bartender Brian who remembers names, orders and conversations from months ago. It's tough to find a high end restaurant in this geographic area but Peter Havens does not disappoint. My husband and I have been here three or four times and enjoy the quality of the food. The place itself is relatively small with an outdoor eating area in the summer. Unfortunately the outdoor menu is different from the indoor menu which we can't understand why. We're also not crazy about the various pieces of local art which seem garish in contrast to the dimly lit vibe of this otherwise lovely place. The wait staff is attentive and friendly. The food is fantastic. The paté is heavenly: both delicate and rich. The escargot is amazing with a creamy exquisite sauce and the right amount of garlic. We've had the duck and fish entrees. Good portions, beautifully made, excellent quality food. In our opinion it is the only local place to eat truly upscale quality food. read more
