We are big fans of Peter Chang and have always loved their food. In fact, we always make it a point to stop by or order to go from them whenever we are in the area for a vacation. We've also tried their other branches and order from their restaurant in NOVA, since we are from there. I love the food here since it is authentic and they also come up with really good dishes, which you don't find in other places. During our last visit, we decided to order to go and order our usual dishes of crispy pork belly, hot & numbing tofu skin, golden chicken, and 3 other forgettable dishes. We've ordered to go from Peter Chang's before and had a good experience, sadly this visit wasn't anything like it. The food was bland, there was no usual Schezuan kick to it. The only thing we enjoyed was the pork belly, all the rest were lacking in taste. The food wasn't anything like how it used to be before. I don't know if it was an off night or COVID reasons but the food was not good. Not worth the price I paid for (this place is pricier compared to other Chinese places). The last time I went to the Peter Chang in Richmond, a new waiter was training there for the Williamsburg Grand Opening, which is how I found out that a Williamsburg location was even opening up. Thus, I made it a point to try out the new Peter Chang when I was in Williamsburg. This location has only been open for a few weeks, but business seems to be doing well. The restaurant itself is about twice the size of the Richmond location; the second sectioned-off room adds a lot of seating space. Like the Richmond restaurant, the Williamsburg one also has a ton of waitstaff. The menu offerings were essentially similar to the Richmond menu, although I felt like the prices were a tad higher. The physical menu was also a different color/design and made out of a different material. The look of this restaurant is different; it is somewhat less bright and a little more plain (but still charming). Food was excellent as always! The Dry Fried Eggplant is still one of my favorite dishes! Service was fine, although everyone seemed busy. I also noticed that the old couple running this restaurant were the same people usually at the Richmond location. They must have come down to help with the Grand Opening, although I definitely did a double-take, wondering for a half-second how they could be at two places at once. xP read more

How do you say OMG in Chinese??? Oh here it is 哦，我的上帝 Anyhow.. Im down here from NY visiting my son who attends W&M. I happen to be a foodie snob. That said this may very well be the best chinese food ive ever eaten in my life. Seriously! I was here two nights. Ordered delivery from here both night. Of particular enjoyment and OMGness was the Bok Choy and Tofu Skin. Also the fish and cabbage if you dig nicey spicy. I have to say I was disappointed a little, but maybe my expectations were too high. My wife and daughter shred the sweet n sour chicken, and it was drowning in sauce. The taste was pleasant but way too much gravy. My oldest daughter had the fried rice w/ chicken/veggies and it was yummy. I had the beef n broccoli and it was pretty average. Might try it one more time for Kung Pao or different dish. read more

Where did he buy his James Beard award because he did not earn it!!! My gosh welcome to 1980 glass block, drop ceilings tiles and seating tables from someone's remodel. I open the paper menu expecting to be wowed. I ordered the shrimp soup dumpling only to told they don't have, okkkkkkay. I go with the veggie dumpling instead, and the combo Lo Mein no pork please. I am delivered a plate of sticky green dumplings with I don't know what inside besides edamame (soy bean) and I make out red bell peppers where are the veggies? Is it supposed to be that green dough? No condiments on the table to soy sauce, chili paste nothing. I sip my hot tea from the 80s plastic mug. Next the Lo Mein comes and it's full of pork when the lady tells me that's not pork EXCUSE ME. I was born at night but not LAST NIGHT!!! I expected Buddha to show up and start laughing. This place is an embarrassment for Chinese food. Whoever is selling fake James beard awards needs to stop! Tuesday lunch 4/19/22. What has happened to this place?? When I was brought my wonton soup I was surprised that the broth was so clear. I'd never seen that before. It looked like hose water and guess what?? It tasted worse than hose water! The smell was horrific and the taste was of chlorine? I made the mistake of eating a wonton from the soup and the inside was cold. Yuck. Gummy spring rolls and extra stale crunch noodles. Hunan chicken was edible, but not good. I hadn't been to Williamsburg in years and when I knew I was coming for a visit, I knew I had to go back to this place. It's still one of the best Szechuan places I've been to in the US. The quality seems like it might have slipped a little in recent years, and the atmosphere could've been better. They had the lights on very bright. They also didn't currently have any kind of liquor license, so there was no wine or beer but the stuff they did well was really good as it always has been. You don't need me to tell you that the dry fried eggplant is amazing. The scallion mobile pancakes as well. Had some great soup buns. The main courses were perhaps, not quite as strong, and their version of crispy chicken with hot peppers wasn't the best I've had. But the stuff that's good is so good to make this place a must visit for me. read more

We were in town for three days and would have eaten here twice a day every day if our schedule allowed. As it was, we had dinner here twice and ordered enough for leftover lunch+ next day. You must order the hand pulled Grandma Noodles, they will elevate anything else you order. The dry fried eggplant was dreamy, as was the stir fry hot pot. For a James Beard Award winner, I expected Peter Chang's to have better quality all around. First I noticed booths with tape covering obvious tears and water stained ceiling tiles. Never a good sign. Secondly, my entree was obviously frozen and was out too quick to have been cooked to order. I couldn't eat it at all. Noodles were really dry and I had to ask for soy sauce for my veg dish which was under seasoned. Did I mention our table had wadded up tissue under the legs to keep it from rocking but wasn't working? The only redeeming factor was the server who did his best in the circumstances. This is a very unassuming place. Not fancy, not upscale. But the decor is irrelevant when the food is this good. I would not say we are aficionados, by any means. But this is seriously the best Chinese food we have ever eaten, ever! We (3) went on a Monday night, and it was a holiday, and were seated quickly. Our server was friendly and attentive. The food was prepared in a timely manner. And everything was fresh and plentiful and yummy. The highlight was the Sweet-and-Sour Ribs, which tasted like tiny short ribs in a wonderful sauce. I cook Chinese food, plus we moved to Williamsburg three year ago from the Bay Area so I believe I pretty much know what good Chinese food tastes like, and this isn't it. While the green beans were good, the rest of our meal wasn't worth the price of admission. My Dan Dan was heavy on spaghetti noodles and light on sauce. My wife's Kung Bao chicken was a quarter grizzle and overly salty. Finally, it was difficult to find any green onions in the puffy onion cake. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant. It is really too bad because we've really looked for a decent Chinese restaurant and this, unfortunately, was our third and last time at Peter Chang's. read more

Dined (if you call it that) on 6/15/17. Really disappointing. Was here about 1 year ago - definitely spiraling downhill. Beef and Broccoli oily, egg rolls appeared to be store bought from Costco and heated in microwave, chicken and asparagus - tasteless....couple other comments...the waiter who I will choose not to mention by name - did not bring white pepper or crispy noodle for egg drop soup. Roof in main dining area is in desperate need of repair...not a mold expert but extensive dark appears to be mold problem / historic leaking patterns throughout. Each dish had some sort of chip / crack - likely not visibly or of concern to the countless senior citizens everywhere...I suspect they are keeping this place alive. I don't know how this location claims the James Beard restaurant award and stays in business. Dying a slow death - change has to come....."It has to Jerry"! (Pics attached). Final thought: As we were departing, 4 mainland China guests arrived - the waitress did not speak chinese - after going to the back - no one on the entire staff spoke Chinese - it was an entire event of pointing at pictures and fumbles in communicating. Great Chinese food! We had an assortment of dishes and did not go for spicy. Dishes were flavorful, not overly salted or saucy, there were tons of vegetables in every dish, all the vegetables tasted fresh, and the shrimp were deveined (clean). As expected in Chinese food, it was cooked with a lot of oil. My family all felt full but not disgusting after stuffing ourselves after a long day at Busch Gardens. Highly recommend. read more

I've been coming here since it opened years ago and it's my favorite restaurant in Williamsburg and my favorite Chinese restaurant I've ever tried. I always get the cilantro fish rolls to start with and sometimes it comes with what tastes like duck sauce and sometimes it comes with an orange sweet sauce. It is always served quickly and it's hot and delicious. For my main course I always get the seafood in stone pot. It comes in a bubbling cauldron type thing with a curry kind of sauce and shrimp, scallops, fish and an assortment of vegetables. It is incredible delicious and the portion size is huge. I sometimes get the hot and spicy hot pot which is also incredible. Very spicy with glass noodles and a variety of meats and vegetables. I always leave this place with a full belly and delicious leftovers I can't restrain myself from eating fifteen minutes later! read more

So this is an opportunity for me to educate those who have no idea what real Chinese food is and complain about it. This is really authentic Chinese restaurant with a variety of Chinese regional cuisines. If you are used to some Chinese take-out General Tso Chicken and Sweet and Sour Soup, this is not the place for you. If you want to complain about how some of the dishes are made oily and spicy--this is how they are supposed to be--people with real appreciation for real Chinese food will love it, and you, and go to a random Chinese take-out. It is so strange to me that people rate food based on what they are accustomed to, when they are totally ignorant about what authentic Chinese food is. I will highly recommend #45 and #46 on the menu, which are the Xinjiang Chicken Noodles and Stone Pot Fish. I've been eating Chinese for my entire life, so please believe in my review instead of some random people who have never experienced authentic Chinese food people. I have been to Peter Chang quite a few times over the years when looking for spicy Sichuan style Chinese food. The menu is extensive,m and the portions are large so its more fun to order multiple items and eat family style. I always like the hot and numbing which has a ton of seafood, vegetables served ina spicy chili oil sauce on a burner. This dish is very flavorful but also pretty oily. The balloon pancake is fun to share and has a curry dipping sauce on the side. The eggplant and golden chicken are solid choices for those that may not like something too spice. It does get pretty crowded on the weekend but service is very fast once you arrive. If looking for spicy, Shanghai style Chinese food in the area then this is a very good option. read more

Went for the first time with my husband tonight after reading reviews. Was surprised after we walked in. Ambience of an elementary school cafeteria. A few paper decorations and dated interior. Server was inattentive and more interested in chatting up the other server than checking on us. Ordered Szechuan beef and sweet and sour pork. The beef was very bland and no condiments were on tables. Had to flag down waitress to ask. Would have been quicker if we had a flare gun but she finally saw us doing windmills from the table. We stopped here on short notice, expecting typical Chinese restaurant experience. We were pleasantly surprised with some of the most authentic food I've tasted outside of Chinatown. The food was amazing, freshly made, and exceptional flavour. It was clear it was all made by hand. Standouts were the steamed pork dumplings, the pork belly, and the twice cooked pork in black bean sauce. Just amazing. The service was good, and speed was impressive. The restaurant facilities were a bit dated, and could use an update, but it was clean and well cared for. The prices were not especially high, though consistent with the food's impressive quality. I normally love Peter Chang's food, but had a bad experience recently. I ordered chicken lo-mein, a nice simple comfort food but did not enjoy it. I had take-out, and asked for the spicy chili sauce to come with it- and was charged an extra dollar?! This is confusing as when you dine in, you can have as much chili sauce you wish, and the amount given was also probably about a 2 tablespoons max. I do not understand why they feel they need to charge extra for this. The lo-mein tasted ok but was a little too greasy, making the noodles extremely soggy. In the end, I was only able to eat the top 2/3 as the bottom 1/3 was just drenched. All in all, not a great experience and will likely not be getting the lo mein again. The prices are much higher than other fast food Chinese restaurants nearby, and just not worth it for me to spend this much again for this quality food. read more

I ordered the Pan Fried Noodles with shrimp from the seasonal menu. The veggies were cooked perfectly and the noodles were nice as well. There was more broth than I expected but no qualms here. I wanted to give this place a try several times before posting this review. In the last 3 months, I have ordered from this place about four times and every time the food was inconsistent. Sometimes when placing the order over the phone, I would be asked about the spice level and other times not. The food is very bland and tasteless when they don't ask for the spice level. And when they did ask, it is extremely oily and I mean the vegetables, meat, noodles, tofu etc is buried in oil. The fried rice also differed each time. The first two times I ordered fried rice, it was just plain white rice with steamed peas and carrots. And the last two times, the rice was actually fried with mixed vegetables. I can't express I was in my experience at this restaurant this past Saturday. Not only was my meal terrible -- I ordered Mongolian shrimp and got more onions than anything else in the dish. In addition, the waiter who knew little English gave me a lunch menu and did not explain clearly that the prices outlined were not valid for Saturday -- not only would there be an additional 3 dollars added for each entree but any soup would also be an additional 3 dollar charge. In other words, a regular weekday lunch meal would be an additional 17 to 19 dollars. When I questioned the bill, he could not explain to me why the charges were so high. He kept saying "dinner price" and little else. When I asked for the manager, she was extremely rude and told me she was too busy to talk to me and just pay my bill which was correct. I have had excellent experience with this restaurant several years ago and so was appalled at both the poor food and the terrible service at this place and will never return. read more
