Do not do your puppy training here! We had three in-store sessions with Sam (Samara) in Reno, NV South Virginia location and every session was basically the same. Each session she had a new puppy that would start and would take a big chunk of class time registering the new puppy and going over what to expect from the class, the basic "rules" of training, how the classes work, her personal dog stories, etc. Each class felt like the first initial class where not a lot happened. Honestly, felt like a complete waste of time and gas. We stopped going after the third session. Petco doesn't refund classes. We have been going to Dog Training By PJ and what a complete difference. Night and day! Her classes are actually educational and they're actually puppy training classes. She doesn't add new dogs every class so every dog is on the same "page" in regards to their training. Huge difference! I would never recommend Petco dog training to anyone. Ever. read more

I work in retail management so I lean on the very understanding side shopping at retail business. I think it is really important for a regional to get their arms around these stores in Reno. I have been in a few times over the past year and it is the same each time. Workers seem to be more concerned about getting to their smoke break in front of their own building that they do not even make eye contact as they walk out. The line was 7 people long and the cashier made no attempt change that. A man finally came up and had a hard time with the transaction. The supervisor female or manager was so condescending to him that he said "I should have just called out" she heard him and still just walked out and lit her cigarette. read more

Brought my pup in Sunday around 230 pm to ask if they had anything open for grooming. Front desk was extremely rude and inconsiderate with a horrible attitude. After finally getting assistance, I looked back In the grooming area there was no way I was leaving my dog there. The groomer was on the borderline of animal abuse. I'm most likely going to report them as I'm sure that treatment is not what is acceptable. I would be VERY weary of leaving your pet with them. read more

I have been going to this store for 15 years. Lately the fish I've purchased have had ICK and infected my tank. I'm not sure what they are doing differently but shouldn't be selling fish until they are sure they aren't infected. This place reminds me of a supermarket but for pet related items. They have a decent selection of any canine supplies we've shopped here for. I can't say for any other animals, we only have a dog so there wasn't ever a need to shop for any other supplies. They have live animals, from fish, to birds and just about everything in between. They offer pet grooming as well. Their customer service is normally above average but that's IF you can find someone to help you. On our last few visits the place seemed to be sparsely staffed. It wasn't busy so there was no long wait in line to checkout but we didn't see anyone working the floor either. My only issue is their location, this parking lot is always busy and people don't seem to pay much attention when walking or driving in the area. read more

In tears about my pompoms grooming. I have (had) a beautiful long hair Pomeranian, I asked for her hind to be shaved and about 1" off of the length and wash, shampoo BRUSH COAT OUT ( all of the usual things to be done for grooming. She had about 6" of long soft flowing hair and I had asked and for a "shampoo, brush and TRIM". When I returned she was completely shaved. And her hair was chopped around her face. 4 years of long growing length. I don't know how a trim of 1" turned into a shave to less than 1/2" meant the same thing. I have had her groomed on a regular basis by other groomers that have never even considered shaving her because of her long beautiful coat. I told the groomer that is not what I expected and the response was "oh you didn't want it that short? I will put a not in here that you want it longer next time." You would think they would have questioned shaving a beautiful long hair Pomeranian before taking the clippers to her. I just hope I can get her length and softness back someday but it will take a lot of time and special attention. I have reached out to the manager with no response. I had a bad feeling about taking her there in the first place but I had just taken my great Pyrenees in a few weeks before and they did a great job. I seriously do not think this person was an actual groomer just a fill in bc they were short staffed or something. Its awful I am devastated. Its comparable to going to the salon with hair down to your lower back and have family photos coming up and you come out looking like a kindergarten boy. I hope petco can somehow rectify this. Yes I paid for this because the damage was done and I was in complete shock. I wish I would have followed my gut on this one. And the damage is done.. I guess she's ready for summer I keep trying to look at a brighter side so I don't dwell on how terrible this is and it is only hair. I just hope it grows back to how it was before :( read more

As a local business owner I understand the struggle asking your customers to comply with the new COVID state regulations to wear a mask. Petco on South Virginia St. was busy and everyone had on their masks but the gentleman 1foot behind me in line. I reminded him about the new regulation and he was very flipped and smirked at me. I came to Petco today to stock up on stuff for my beloved wittle kitty cat after moving. Petco had everything I needed. Cat litter, litter liners, litter scooper, wet food, dry food. Boom. All good. I was impressed by the breadth of selection. Not only of cat stuff but all the other live pets and stuff for other kinds of pets too. I spent some fun time looking at cute hamsters and guinea pigs. I was excited to see all the ferrets. I don't think ferrets are legal in California where I come from. When it came time to pick cat food for Princess Lick-the-bowl, they didn't have the kind she was used to but they had a whole lot of other choices. Hopefully my cat will like what I got her. Isn't it always the worst when you bring your can a nice tin of wet food and they're like nope, I don't like that one? I'm always like cat, it's what's for dinner. I was a little puzzled by the fact that the cat litter only seemed to have multi-cat litter. Being a single-cat cat lady I was like is Reno the land of multi-cat cat ladies? Points to ponder. I lightly browsed the small dog clothes section as my cat sometimes wear clothes. As she's a little traumatized still from moving I decided not to torture her with any more clothes. Petco had some super-cute stuff though. I saw a metallic goldfish costume and a lobster. I'll definitely be back. When I went to check out the girl seemed super-sweet. She helped me get a discount card. Asked the nice fellow who was waiting to buy a bunch of goldfish (No idea why?) to get me a cart which he did. Nice people are good. The parking lot was big, easy and free. Petco is next to a nice looking Barnes and Noble that I definitely want to check out on a later trip. read more

The main reason that I love Petco? The Petco Pals Rewards. Yep, money back for buying dog food, dog treats, and those irresistible seasonal squeaky toys right when you walk in. After all of those dog food commercials shaming consumers on what they are feeding their dogs and making you feel bad for feeding them chicken byproducts and whatnot, I went did my own research and found a new dog food brand that was of a higher quality, but still fit in the budget. Petco was the closest to me that sold it and since then has become the only place I shop for my pup. Now that we're buying the larger bag of food (because the price is actually cheaper per ounce) we're earning those pals rewards left and right. The checkout lines are never too long, but when they do get more than a few people in them, backup gets called. Oh, and they have coupons on hand for you to use if you didn't get them in the mail. read more

They just get one star. I only stop here once in awhile for crickets for my frogs. I hate coming here for this because I need small crickets and half the time they are out, so I prefer Pet Smart just two blocks away because instead of just stocking crickets out they scoop them out and I never get any dead crickets. At Petco they stock them out in containers and there are always dead stock in them. Anyway today I come in and they have like 8 containers of the small crickets. In every container all the crickets are dead, I mean nothing is moving. My frogs only eat live crickets. I check the date on the bottom and most are December 1st, the oldest one is December 5. So all their crickets are dead and sitting there for weeks I assume. Now this is two days before Christmas at this store between Barnes and Nobles and Best Buy so it takes me 15 minutes to get out of the parking lot. Last straw, not going back to Petco. read more

I like stores that allow me to bring in my pet! If you love your critters as much as I love mine, this is a cool place to take your pet on a leash and get them treats and toys. This place has everything you can imagine for a wide variety of different animals. They carry live animals, fish, birds, hamsters, ferrets, and probably others that I'm leaving out. They often have pet adoptions for cats and dogs. They do have grooming - but APlus Animal hospital is cheaper. I think this store carries some unique items. I also shop on their website, which has even more stuff - and always has promotions for discounts and free shipping! I also like their other location over near Northtowne! read more

I've had fish tanks for most of my life, my son now 8 is just getting into it. I only have 1 fresh water tank and my son told me the fish in that tank are boring. So even though I know better I went to Petco so he could pick out a few fish for our 120 gallon fresh water. 4 mollies and 2 baby balla sharks to add some color and join the 6 year old 12" ballas I already have. Though they looked clean within 48 hours most of my fish had ICH. Tried the natural meds, didn't work. Stepped up to the hard stuff that I knew would hurt my catfish, still didn't work. A week later ALL Dead except those dang mollies. Years of growing those fish just gone all because I wanted to make an 8 year old smile. Never again Petco. read more

Cool pet store. The people here are really friendly and helped me out when my dog got skunked! An online website recommend a some stuff called "skunk off". I really didn't think that anyone carried this stuff. And while I was looking at the shampoo aisle looking at hundreds of bottles of dog bath stuff ,a nice man pointed me in the right direction, but none left. He let me know when a new truck was coming in and even told me to go to the northtowne petco to get one there. I wondered around a bit and found the dog treats that you can buy buy the pound. There were cookie snacks that looked like there were human cookies. A little girl that was standing there picked one up and smelled it. I was waiting to see if she would eat it. Then her mom snatched it out if her hand and threw it back into the pile, then a sales lady goes"ohhh you can it, they are not just for dogs. They are safe for humans as well" and popped one into her mouth! awwww...I don't think that I will try it, that's something for my BF to try. read more

We recently added 2 young (8 week old) puppies to our family. It's been a few years since I myself have had a puppy, we've always had grown dogs... But a puppy.. Times 2! Was new to me. I was immediately greeted by a very pleasant and knowledgable young female staff member (I honestly wish I could remember her name, I know she teaches some of the puppy classes they offer) She walked through the whole store with my 2 daughters and our 2 puppies, showed me every single thing I needed for them, From toys to kennels and food. She knew everything and answered all our questions. She spent at least 30 minutes with us alone and never left our side, and even rang us up at the end. I prefer PetsMart however, Petco seems to be cheaper for Kong crap to throw into the red thing for my dog. They beat, PetsMart (usually), and even Amazon. Buying in the store is slightly less than buying online, however there are usually online deals like for $30 off a $100 purchase so online is the way to go if you have to buy many items. I usually just buy in the store because I just get 1 or 2 bottles of my Kong. read more

The groomers at this location are hapless. Admittedly, my 9 lb dog is squirmy and lovey, but the guy cutting her was scared of her because she tried to lick him. He called me freaking out and said he couldn't complete the job, so he returned her half shaven and unwashed. The next day, we were told to come in and someone else would finish the cut. My dog still ended up with a bad cut. The person cutting her said she did fine and was calm the whole time. The Petsmart in NW Reno does a much better job and carry themselves with more professionalism. read more

I am absolutely not impressed. I called in to compare prices with pet smart. Pet smart was cheaper, but it wasn't by much so I decided to give them a chance. I got a quote for $25 a dog and wouldn't go higher than $28 (my pups are on the small side of medium). I get there, and they say, "it starts at $30 per dog". Um, that's not what you told me. Ok, So I try to ask about that and it's an "oh well, we can't do anything until we see them". Hmm. Okay. So, $30 a dog (pet smart is seeming the better choice at this point). So I go back in, and they have charged me $33 a dog, and put on the receipt that my dogs are in the "Dalmatian-Doberman" category. SERIOUSLY?! My dogs don't even weigh 40 lbs and are at LEAST 8 inches shorter than a small Dalmatian, let alone a regular size. I complained about it to the cashier, I am not coming back here. Pet smart would have been over $20 cheaper for the same services. Absolutely ridiculous. read more

We have an Australian Sheppard that is 10 years old. He's a spoiled happy boy, with really long hair. The down side of this is, he gets really hot in the summer and his hair gets matted no matter how much time you spend brushing him. So we decided to take him in to get groomed. Hesitant at first, because this proud boy had gotten a hair cut once before but was embarrassed and pouty for weeks about it. But after much careful thought, and seeing a collie out camping that had been groomed at petco and looked great, we decided to give it a go. It wasn't the easiest to make an appointment. You have to call in, and you can end up sitting on hold for the better part of 10mins+. Their availability was a few days out, but it all worked out. You drop your dog off for 3 hours or so. But the end result is worth it. We almost didn't recognize him when we came to get him with his hair short and fluffy and smelling so fresh. He even got his teeth brushed! What a happy handsome dog. They did an excellent job and we could tell they treated him well while he was there without us. He was excited to see momma, but not too stressed which was great. We will definitely be back. It's too difficult to try and take that on at home. And the pup deserves to get pampered now and then. He's pretty cool, and happy now prancing around in his new blue collar we got while we were there...you can actually see he is wearing one now that his hair is so short! Definitely worth it for more comfort for him in this heat! read more
