I'll start with the positives. The staff are friendly and obviously care about the animals. Customer service is great. However, the staff are also limited by the realities of working in pet retail. Are they doing their best to care for the animals? I'd say yes. Is it enough for the animals to stay healthy? I'd say no. As an experienced fishkeeper, I want to provide a 'buyer beware' for the local hobbyist community. The aquatic systems are being pushed past their biological limits. I observed overstocking in the fish tanks into 'ammonia spike' territory. Some of the fish have clamped dorsal fins. Petco is also keeping larger koi fish and faster comets together with smaller fancy goldfish. This creates too much food competition and stresses out the slower fish that struggle to get enough to eat. If you've ever purchased a fish here that dies shortly afterwards, these are likely some of the reasons: toxic water levels, starvation, and conditions you won't see until the fish you've bought dies a few days later. A 'Wellness' brand should know that fancy goldfish require stable parameters and specific GH/KH levels that a centralized big-box 'loop' simply cannot provide. If Petco (not this store, but the corporation) can't manage the basic science of a fish tank, I certainly don't trust them with my cats' specialized diets or needs. If you need basic cat and dog supplies, Petco is fine for that. It's the "Walmart" of the pet retailer world. But for serious specialized fish care? Save your money and get your fish and supplies from a reputable retailer who doesn't treat live animals like disposable inventory. Or better yet, adopt from another hobbyist who can no longer care for their fish. read more

We briefly stopped by Petco because I was in search for a birthday cake/pie/treat for my dog. Unfortunately, we only found the birthday-cake-flavored dog biscuits (close enough, I guess). The store was fairly neat and orderly, and the shelves were fully stocked with a huge variety of different items. The employees were courteous and their prices were the same as their competitors. I came in to buy crickets for my leopard gecko. ALL the boxes of crickets were covered in their own poop and all dead and twitching. I asked to see if there any live ones in the back and the guy in the front said, "Yes but I'm not taking them out you can buy the dead ones". My lizard only eats live crickets and especially won't feed my own pet pooped covered crickets. I had to go to PetSmart and good thing I did because they were cleaner and had hundreds of crickets that were alive and not in boxes. Overall GO TO PETSMART INSTEAD!!! read more

Stopped in as soon as the doors opened. I was looking for a product I saw online that helps calm your cat. They had the larger spray bottle but not the small one. Since I've never tried it and it wasn't inexpensive, I asked Bridget if I could bring it back if it didn't work. She confirmed that I could, so felt comfortable buying it. Usually come here for fish and aquarium supplies. They usually have a good selection of fish and I've never had an issue w them. Only issue is sometimes service is slow if it's busy. Most likely just understaffed or lazy staff because I see some of them hiding in the room in the fish section. Overall not bad and good place for getting into the fish hobby. read more

The ladies in the grooming department are awesome! The Petco website doesn't allow you to schedule nail trims so I always try to drop in at opening when it isn't busy yet. They have always been friendly and accommodating. Out of the three places I get my dogs nails trimmed, they are the best because they also offer grinding for dogs who have long quicks. It means less frequent visits since they can grind the nails back further without bleeding. The ladies during today's visit noticed I had picked up a cone for my dog and asked what he was having issues with. With constant butt licking, they let me know it is common with anal gland issues in smaller and older dogs. After his nail trim she just quickly checked and expressed out some discharge. It was so nice of them to do that and give the additional information so I didn't have to schedule a vet visit. Now that I know, I will be having that checked at future nail trim visits. You can get everything you need for your pets here except a few special cat food brands like Fussie cat food which is excellent for picky eaters or you need cat food that has NO chx in the ingredients. Tiki cat food has food with no chicken and Petco carries it. Easy to shop and vhevk out from here. read more

I bought 4 new koi fish that were diseased apparently because they died within three weeks and also brought their disease to my pond killing 8 more fish I have had for many years, up to fourteen years two of them and when I called to talk to the Petco folks they just said okay, okay, yep, okay, they didn't care in the least bit. No apologies, no inquisitive questions so they could prevent it happening again, no remorse whatsoever. I am in thousands of dollars with draining my pond, medication my pond, transporting all my plants from the pond in order to medicate t pond. I have thousands of dollars invested in those other fish that have died and Petco has nothing to say but okay. I hope you go out of business because Petco! No business deserves to exist that is so careless. read more

Petco has a good selection of toys and treats. I've come here for years and the staff is always friendly. But PLEASE don't barricade off with boxes and empty enclosures in front of the conures. From someone who knows birds, it's cruel. They're blocked behind boxes and displays and I've seen it this way every time I've come here recently / multiple times. It's understandable needing a place to have boxes but the birds are not having a true and good quality of life in the store as it is, and being blocked away makes it even worse. You can hardly see them and they need interaction. It would be different if they had a few feet of space but it's right against the birds. read more

I went in today for 100 live medium crickets. I got them in a bag with a small carton. When I got home to put them in my critter box majority of them were dead( a whole handful). I spent 17 dollars on live crickets for most of them to be dead which is very disappointing and irritating . read more

I love this pet store for grooming! We get the Spa Package for our dog once per month and I'm extremely happy with it. They do a multitude of things with this service besides the usual bath. It only takes about 3 hours when you make a appointment in advance. My Sawyer comes out happy and pristine. He is white so you can see any dirt on him easily...sometimes this is a curse rather than a blessing:) He is always very happy going and coming home so I know they treat him right. read more

This review is based solely on my grooming experience. The store itself gets 5 stars. I booked a groomers appointment a week in advance and confirm my appointment thru text a couple of days beforehand, well, the DAY of, I receive a text at 1:30am on Saturday that they need to cancel my appointment due to the groomer "minor injury" but I can bring my dog to get groomed later on in the week. What a text to wake up to. I decline and I ask them to please figure it out bc I really needed my dog groomed bc I can't take her during the week. They were able to squeeze me in and I show up and they tell me that it will be 4 hours after I share a picture of what I wanted her groom to look like. So I show up to pick up my dog after they call me to let me know she will be done in 20 minutes. They ask me if I wanted to pay before they brought her out to me and I just had a bad feeling about it and say no, I want to see her first. Well lo and behold. She looks almost EXACTLY the way she looked when I dropped her off AND NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE I HAD SHOWN THEM. At this point I'm furious bc I felt like they were trying to trick me before I paid for the terrible service I was provided. Will never ever be taking my dog to this groomer again. Fortunately the manager Cody was able to help me out when I told him the situation and he didn't charge me for the poor grooming service. Had an unfortunate mix-up with Doordash delivering me the wrong food. Doordash themselves were NOT helpful in resolving my issue. However, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to store managers Zach and Cody (that's not lost on me for those of you who raised kids in the early 2000's :D) These two were very understanding, very apologetic, very helpful and did their best to rectify the situation. Had a really wonderful experience in the small animal department! Our youngest has been asking for a small rodent, and we all decided as a family it was time to get a family hamster. We went up to a staff member to ask about the temperaments of the hamsters and a gentleman began to ask us questions about our family life and who would be caring for the animal. It was SO refreshing to have a staff member who ACTUALLY cared about the well-being of the animals in their care. He explained they DO turn away people who are buying animals for toddlers only and who don't have plans of all caring for an animal together and I just think that's wonderful and much needed. He ended up helping us find the hamster with the best temperament, handled him for us and helped us pick out the best supplies. We are all so happy to have our new little guy! read more

A couple of months ago I got a hamster here. I find that when shopping for live animals like hamsters or mice petco is going to be much better than petsmart. The petco animals are checked up on regularly and their habitats are much cleaner than at petsmart. However, if you are buying pet supplies, I recommend the petsmart right down the street as it's significantly cheaper. This place is exactly what I'd expect from a large chain pet store but I still left feeling a bit uneasy. The wheels and cages they sell for these animals are very small and the employees didn't truly seem to know what hamsters require. I would suggest doing your own research. read more

INSIDE: To the right of Best Buy. Typical Petco, but this one felt like the shelves were a lot closer to each other with not much aisle space. Like if you had a shopping cart and went down an aisle, then someone coming in the other direction won't be able to get by. It felt claustrophobic, which is even worse when you have a big dog with you. PRODUCTS: Came looking for calming dog greats, and saw 3 options. I feel like Petsmart has more choices, but at least they had more than one option. ADOPTIONS: Sign out front had adoption information, which I was expecting the adoptable dogs to be outside because that's what I'm used to seeing, but turns out they were inside to the right in crates. They were kind of hidden being behind this big white solid fenced training area and behind the treat self serve bar. OVERALL: We didn't end up buying anything. It looked like there were a lot of sale tags on products though. It's just A-OK. I wish the aisles were bigger and they had more selection. read more

It took 6 phone calls, both the store and by pressing 1 for Grooming, to get a grooming appointment for this morning at 9:30am. When I arrived there is a sign on the door with instructions to call for curbside meet with the dog. I called twice, no response. Finally, the one person working the register saw me standing out there and let me in to the grooming area. I waited, in total, about 12 minutes. I finally went into the store and asked to speak with a Manager. Rachel, the Manager on duty, appears from the back office and when I tell her I've been waiting instead of saying "I'm sorry to hear that, let's get your dog checked in", she proceeds to tell me they're in the middle of a Pandemic and doing the best they can. I explain I'm a long time customer and will not be back, she basically says that's fine and accuses me of just wanting to argue and I leave the store. I came back in to ask her name- and tell her I'm frustrated because I waited 12 minutes and she didn't seem to care and in the absolute "snotty'ist" tone she says "I'm sorry my groomer had to use the restroom". Petco- what has happened to customer service in your stores and customer service training for your Managers? If you know your groomer is in the restroom and you have a 9:30am appointment- the Manager should have been covering that desk to check the customer in- not hiding in the office. Rachel also proceeded to tell me how I ruined the start of her day with my complaint. Managers should be equip to handle complaints, as you would think they would want to know what's going on in their store. Maybe even learn and create a better way. Unfortunately, this Manager could have cared less. You've lost this customer for life. We're ALL in a pandemic. If you're store is going to be open, DO BETTER. read more

I took my dog to training at Petco with Sam . My dog is very afraid of everything and she's got her walking in and seeing people and actually gets along with everybody. She says she comes on command lol because Sam helped me figure out how to help her be more comfortable around other people and dogs. read more

Some of the staff are not familiar with their stock and products. They don't carry everything they offer online. They have the basics. They also have a treat bar but I wonder how fast that stock rotates. read more

This Virginia Street Petco location is my favorite!! I have 2 stinky kitty cats who blow through food, littler and treats like it's going about of style, so I spend a lot of time and money at pet stores. I have been to each Petco location in Reno several times, and this location never disappoints! Located on South Virginia and S. McCarren Blvd. Easy access and close to key shopping centers. The staff has always been helpful, professional and friendly. Compared to the other locations, you can see that they take pride in their store. For example; they always have fresh and healthy cat grass at the checkout stand. This shows that they take the time to maintain products, which makes for happy customers. :) It's a big store and the layout is so easy to navigate! It has always been clean and the products I buy are always in stock, which is not the case with the other locations. I have added this Petco location into my weekly shopping rotation, so I can keep my little monsters healthy and happy. read more
