A lot of the animals inside don't look like they're taken care of properly it's really sad. they all look stressed out, bored, or unhealthy. a lot of the other things they sell aren't proper things for good animal care like the hamster cages, food, toys and many other things. I personally wouldn't buy from here and support the business. read more

I got 2 female mice as pets the week after Thanksgiving. They were still young and not fully grown. By the time they were 5 months old, their bodies started to paralyze. It started with their back legs and worked is easy to their front paws. Eventually, they were nearly completely paralyzed. They were barely able to eat or get water on their own. They needed to be hand fed and watered. This is due to terrible breeding practices. When we picked out the mice, they had the boys and girls mixed. I should have taken that as a sign that their mice are inbred but, I let my excitement of new pets get in the way of my common sense. read more

Love this place I got an American blue parakeet and he is happy, healthy and playful . I recommend this small animal store.

If I could give no stars, I would. If I could give negative stars, I would. I'm shocked that this establishment is still open, but they are the only place in Reno (that I have found) that sells live feeder rodents. First off, for the feeder rodents. They seem healthy to an extent. They don't, however, often have smaller end feeders which have concerned us as to whether our snake would eat or not. Another con, they don't offer a new feeder if your snake doesn't eat the ones provided, or if the ones provided die before being eaten. This is shocking. Except, they aren't a reptile store or vivarium. Okay, so now for the real reason for the score. Their establishment smells like a puppy mill or an extremely unkempt pet store. Their birds all have frayed feathers and seem extremely starved of attention. The employee there when I went -- I am assuming an owner -- seemed extremely disgruntled. She never once smiled or said welcome. Nor did she ask how she could help me. She just glared. No, it was more of a scowl. I didn't go far into the shop, but the clutter and smell told me I probably didn't want to. I'm trying to figure out something else for our snakes because I don't want to support this business. I can't believe the female Capuchin monkey is over 40yrs old! Such a cute mascot. Not very many selections on the clothes rack and the sale tag, supposedly the ones with a red tag were half off, however I only found 1 item in there and it was dreadfully old. Most items need dusting and if they wish to sell the product, it would be good to pick it up and touch it without being afraid or hesitant to get your fingers dirty. I support independently owned pet stores but if the stores can maintain cleanliness it would be more appealing for customers to stay longer and maybe even purchase an item or two. Quite a few selections in rodents, gerbers and feeders for your reptile/s, decent price on the reptiles as well and the beautiful cat we saw today was tempting to adopt, however the cat can not get along with dogs (in which case...I could not, even if we wanted to.. in fear our dogs will fight with this cute animal). The lady behind the counter was friendly too but like I said, it needs dusting in there but it's a cute store. read more

I usually just come in for dog food, but always enjoy having a look at all the birds and rodents on display, or the shop owner's Pekingese dogs that hang out behind the counter. This is a fun, quirky local shop with nice owners. read more

Still buying my bird supplies here. And watching for a finch to come available so I can get a friend for my poor lonely surviving Bengalese. These guys are great and I'm glad they're still in business. I know they get crowded by the superstores of petdom such as PetSmart and PetCo, but they are hanging in there, and I'd MUCH rather buy my birds here than anywhere else in town. read more

I'm saddened to see those few bad reviews. Especially for a small business. I've had nothing but great customer service from this pet shop. I bought my first bird from there 30 years ago. All the pets I had gotten from there over the years had been healthy with 0 problems. I find their knowledge on birds and parrots especially to be very vast. The type of advice you will not get from Petco or Petsmart from the 20 year old they hire over the summer. In my opinion they take excellent care of their pets. I've had no problems in the neighborhood they are in. I also work at the VA about a block from there. So if you have never been to Petting Place, go try that little neighborhood pet store. Maybe instead of going to one of the big chain pet stores, you might find you actually like it better. I do. read more

I came to Pettin Place on the advice of my Reno native cousin as it was much closer then Petco. Kind of a dodgy neighborhood but I found street parking right away across the street. Little, cute mom n' pop place next to a hookah bar. The first thing I noticed was wow, there are a lot of really fun animals in here! Loud parrots kept it lively. The next thing I noticed was wow, what great customer service! Usually when sales people ask me if I need any help I'm irritated, especially if I'm just browsing. But this time I was looking to buy wet cat food and cat litter.The nice lady led me through the crowded store exactly to where it was. I probably would have had trouble finding it so that was very helpful. Customer service actually worked out the way it's supposed to, amazing! They didn't have the flats of wet cat food I like to stock up with which was a bit of a minus. But they did have a buy three get one free safe on the b.f.f. cat food which made my total shockingly blessedly cheap and will keep my kitty very happy. Pettin Place also sold me a big plastic sack of very DIY looking "Happy Pussy Cat Litter" which at $2.95 was both hilarious and a bargain. Kitty will be happy. I will be back. read more

Thanks for selling me a sick bird for a little girl! She was heart broken when it died after only having it a couple months. Diagnosis? A bacterial infection that it'd had since before we bought it. I could try to convince myself that you didn't know, but after talking to our vet and actual bird experts, we discovered that almost the information you gave us was incorrect. If I could give them 0 stars I would. The place is filthy, the birds are grimy and look like they've been self mutilating, and they keep multiple glass cages of "breeder guinea pigs" in unlit cages behind racks of product. The owners don't seem to care about the health of their birds, nor of their guinea pigs, some of which were long haired and had obvious matting and filth in their fur. They sell large parrots which are kept in VERY small cages in the middle of the store, at the time I went they had a large macaw in a cage that couldn't have been larger than 2ft x 3ft. I was horrified. Please don't give your money here. There are plenty of other small business pet stores who genuinely love their animals and will be more than happy to help you find anything you need. Don't give money to these people, as it's obvious that money means more to them than the care of their animals. read more

This place is Awesome! The owners are super-nice and are very knowledgeable on a large variety of pets! They have a little bit of everything in here... Birds, Fish, Rabbits.. You can tell they are very well taken care of. They also have a large selection of dog clothes! Sad. One of the birds beak is very long and untrimmed. The baby guinea pigs are all kept together and overcrowded. The bird feed is overpriced and all of the animals seemed to be in poor condition. i would not suggest unless they fix :( read more

We just moved to Reno from Carson last month and we needed to buy some food for our finches. Finch food can be somewhat difficult to come by as most places usually sell a mix for parakeet/canary and finch. Not only did they have a few varieties of finch food in stock, but we were able to find some well priced toys for our dogs and a good rubber brush for our cat who's constantly shedding. The person at the counter asked us if we needed help right away and directed us to their bird section. Overall great service and good prices. We will be visiting this shop quite often. read more

I come here for feeder pinkies, other then that I would never visit this store. The owners are usually unfriendly and impersonal and even though they are cheaper then Petco, I'd rather go there regardless that their service sucks as well, its cleaner and neater. Well. . . .back in 1993 or so I bought a ferret there and they were unbelievably nice. Don't know if since then there is new management. I will say they raised the ferrets right as they told me they could be kitty box trained easily since they were not raised on litter type material including shavings. I learned a lot from the gentleman and he was right. I did exactly what he told me, and the ferret I purchased would run from the other room to get to her cage to use her potty box. When you get near the volkswagon spider on a roof, you are close to the Pettin' Place. read more

They only have one brand of dog food, and it gave my dog a bad ulcer. The shop is poorly kept. I would never step foot in this place again!

I love this store. We've lived in Reno now for a couple of years but are used to the down home style of Truckee stores and this store gives it. They have a decent selection of most things. I love the owners for they are friendly, knowledgable, and very helpful. A great place to board a bird! We take a couple of big trips a year and I was thrilled to find a reliable, caring and affordable place to board our bird. "Cranky" starts to happily chirp the minute we walk in. Apparently he enjoys being there too! Have also purchased bird food and supplies and the prices are good. read more

After Petco gave in to PETA's demands that they stop selling feeder mice and rats (because it's not OK to raise rodents as food, but apparently it is OK to let snakes starve...thanks, PETA), we had to find another place in town to find our ball python food. Pettin' Place is pretty much the only place left in town that fills that particular niche. Of course, we should have been going there all along, because why support a huge chain store with HORRIBLE customer service when such a nice, independent business is available? You can find pretty much everything you need here (including feeder rats, mice, and crickets), and it is just a fun place to visit. They have a Capuchin Monkey (they are licensed to own it) and lots of cool birds to look at. You will receive excellent service, and feel good about sticking it to Petco and Petsmart, with their ridiculous policies and employees who know very little about animals. read more

I needed a warm coat for my dog...I went to all the big chain stores and no dice even if i was willing to spend up to $80. I walk into Pettin' Place and for $6 I walked out with the perfect coat. Also when I was a kid this WAS the pet store... I'm so glad its still around! read more

I agree that the place could use a little dusting but the animals' cages are always very clean (except for that nasty little monkey). The people that work there are kind, friendly, and knowledgable. Prices are better than PetCo and Pet Smart. I first went there for feeders for my snakes and have been a faithful customer since. They also have a variety of small animals and birds and bring in new ones all the time. read more
