I really hate leaving bad reviews and this is a tough one. I come here for feeder fish regularly (2 plus years) and this place is less than a quarter mile from my house. My main issue is I usually come in after my 16 hour blue collar shift to run a quick errand on my way home from work. The girl in charge of the fish department is really knowledgeable and takes great care of the fish there. (Petco is usually notoriously bad about this so I give her credit for actually caring) the only issue is it routinely takes me 20-25 minutes to get feeder fish from her. She's very talkative and even when there's 7-10 people waiting in line for help she'll talk each and every persons head off about their purchase even when they're clearly in a hurry (literally holds our bagged fish and continues conversing while we stare at the bag waiting for the chance to get the hell out of there and finish our other after work errands). I'm a regular and she still always asks what fish I have and the size of my tank. She means well and doesn't want people keeping fish in tanks that are too small but I literally get this same interrogation every time I come in and it's gotten really old. When they don't have the healthier Rosies in stock I settle for goldfish and she gives me a hard time about it every time like it's my fault they don't have what I want in stock. 1/2 of the time I come in I end up leaving to try again another day because the process is basically the Petco equivalent of the DMV. Like I said I appreciate that she really cares about the fish and takes great care of them but she has no sense of urgency when her department is full of customers waiting for help. Plenty of other people end up leaving out of frustration as well. Today was the breaking point for me, I waited 30 minutes for help and asked several other employees including her for help and was completely blown off along with several other customers. At this point I've decided I'm better off driving 15 minutes away to another pet store rather than wait so long for service again. I like to think of myself as a patient person but it's just gotten ridiculous. The rest of the store is great and the employees are friendly as well but since my main reason to visit this place is fish needs and I'm completely over it. If your planning on visiting for fish I highly recommend avoiding this place unless you have 30 minutes to spare to bs about fish and get interrogated about your tank setup (that is if you get any help at all) read more

I bought my little "Kung Fu" Ferret here on Sunday morning. The lady was very helpful!!!! She hungout with us and answered our questions. She let us hold several and educated us on litter training tips. The cage was nice, they had food, water and a litter pan. All 10+ ferrets looked healthy, and full of excitement. I got the last Sable. She is the sweetest so far... ") I had 2 ferrets in the past and she seems way different then them as a kit. I thank Petco for having a litter pan in their cage. The reason to this is, if you are a new ferret owner buying a ferret already used to a litter pan at the pet store will help out in wonders at home. Your fuzz but will already be familiar with using it and you won't have to go through much of a hassle To train them. My ferret has not once went out of her litter pan, she uses it every single time!!!!!! I am 100% happy with this Petco, their service, the enviornment & my pet. The ferrets also come with a birth certificate, 1st Distemper vaccine, spayed/neutered & descented. I work at an animal hospital and all of these are VERY important to your pets long term health. Do not do your puppy training here! We had three in-store sessions with Sam (Samara) in Reno, NV South Virginia location and every session was basically the same. Each session she had a new puppy that would start and would take a big chunk of class time registering the new puppy and going over what to expect from the class, the basic "rules" of training, how the classes work, her personal dog stories, etc. Each class felt like the first initial class where not a lot happened. Honestly, felt like a complete waste of time and gas. We stopped going after the third session. Petco doesn't refund classes. We have been going to Dog Training By PJ and what a complete difference. Night and day! Her classes are actually educational and they're actually puppy training classes. She doesn't add new dogs every class so every dog is on the same "page" in regards to their training. Huge difference! I would never recommend Petco dog training to anyone. Ever. read more

I don't know where to go to about this at this point it's a Saturday. I just got out of PETCO as I am in parking lot writimg this!!! my daughter cried seeing how the baby bearded dragons were being starved. This isn't an assumption their food bowl had old dry and shriveled up veggies along with an empty, dry water bowl, all baby beardies came off from their log and started to follow her as if they thought they were going to be fed. The fishes were attempting to jump out the water, following her finger as well as attacking one another. once we saw this we continue to get what we were there for and we have made up our decision to never go back and support PETCO for any reason whatsoever this is so evil and inhuman I don't understand how this company that is owned by living, human species can be alive or even trusted. We need to do better for the animals who cannot defend themselves and who have done nothing wrong but exist. they don't deserve this and we need justice for all of the thousands of pets that have been treated like this for years!!!!!!! We've come to this Petco on multiple occasions, and it's always the same thing. Sylvia has neglected to assist us in aquatics on several occasions, and we are left there waiting 30+ min. Tried to get a dog groomed. No masks worn by staff and they were not letting my shy dog feel safe. Hell I didn't feel safe. Groomer grabbed his hind section within 20 seconds and he growled. They said they don't muzzle so they refused to service me. Did I say they were not wearing a mask and can pass covid to pets? I fully get risk. Here's the deal. If you want to be able to turn down an appointment have a quick eval before the appointment 30 -50 seconds eval. Then tell the human hey your dog scares me so don't waste time wait for an appointment during a heat wave. Nevada has a large increase in covid wear a mask. Evaluate dogs don't wait till the owner had to wait for weeks. Not recommending this place. read more

Was so happy. I went to Petco yesterday at about 530 PM or 6 PM. I was there 3 weeks before and bought a harness for my 3 legged Wonder Pooch Major. Last night I went in to buy treats and Natural toothpaste for my boy. The blonde girl from 3 weeks ago was manning the checkstand. She saw Major and asked if he was enjoying that harness. I've always been impressed with this Petco location with my fish/aquarium hobby and with caring for my new puppy. First off, if you're interested in a PUPPY/DOG, ask for SARAH, she's amazing and extremely knowledgeable. I met her tonight and she spent probably 10-15 minutes with us helping pick out a dog food and talking about care tips, which is super helpful and very appreciated. If you're interested in FISH, ask for DOMINIC. He's their aquatics expert. He is super approachable and very very knowledgeable in regards to fish and planted tanks. He will sit and talk to you and answer questions. He's helped me a ton with my aquarium! I have to also mention LISA. She has checked me out multiple times and has always been awesome. She helped us find a coupon in our Petco booklet and made every effort to give us the best deal she could. Just another person that makes this location a great place to go! Everyone is always helpful and even if they are not excited to be there, you can definitely tell they don't let it affect how they treat you. Everyone has bad days and I've been to places where the employees don't know how to put on a professional smile and help you regardless. This place is awesome for its customer service and has a pretty good selection in both the dog and aquatics department with people that are very knowledgeable. In the last couple months I've been to this location probably 12+ times. To be honest, I've probably had maybe 2 sub par experiences, but that was in the middle of the day with low staffing and one employee that called in sick. The reason I know this was because the manager came to help me after a 10 minute wait in the fish area and apologized and explained the reason for it being a wait. If you go during the morning or evening, it's always been a good quick experience. Like anything you buy, do your research! It makes the experience for you and the employee helping you if you have a solid foundation and just need some guidance in your decisions. read more

This store is smaller than most pet services stores and we were looking for a new collar and personal tags for our cat and kitten. We found 2 collars, one blue, for the boy, and a pink one for the girl. We used the scanning machine for the tags, to enter the cat's name and the phone and address. It was hard to find the unused engravement-ready tags, but the cashier was friendly and showed us where they were. The cashier was sporadically busy but very helpful. As I said, this is a smaller store and they don't have everything... just the basics. Easy access to freeway and back. They also have grooming there but I don't have much to talk about them because I didn't use their services. Pets are welcome on a leash or in a carrier. Ample parking. Off North McCarran in Reno. I always go here to get my dog's food and treats. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and always kind. Last Saturday I lost my wallet and had to unfortunately write it off as gone. To my surprise I had a message 2 days later from Mack (a store employee). I quickly called back (at 9:13) and Mack promptly answered. Even though it was past closing - he assured me if I could get there in a timely manner he would be out to give me my wallet. When I arrived - there was Mack at the door with wallet in hand and a small bag of dog treats! I was so surprised by this kind act. He certainly didn't have to go this extra mile - especially because the lost wallet was my fault; but he did. That's what makes stores like this so wonderful. Knowing that someone was frantic about loosing their belongings and going the extra mile to put a smile on their face. Mack is an exceptional employee and I cannot say enough about how impressed I am with his service. I am now a Petco shopper for life! Any store who hires employees who go out of their way to make someone's day is a business that deserves my business! They lack of experience. They don't know how to treat dogs which is what they're trained to do. I brought in my 8 pound maltipoo for grooming, it was his first time so he was probably scared. My dog growled at the lady but she didn't try to calm him down or anything, not professional at all! They decided that he just couldn't get washed which was unbelievable! They just sent me back home! I am most definitely not bringing my dog back and would not recommend to anyone. I can't believe that they don't know how to control a small dog if that's what they are working with, imagine if he was a big dog! My experience was terrible. read more

Living out near Stead this is the closest "chain" pet store. So with that, know that you will pay more if you go there than if you can find it on Amazon, Walmart, etc. However, they do have a nice selection of items, and when in a pinch and you need something it's nice to have a place to go. Staff was always friendly and knowledgeable (or willing to direct me to someone that knew more than them). Store is clean every time I go in there. And there are a variety of items to choose from. Price is the only real knock and that i don't think will change. But it is a chain store. I always think of it as a convenience store. Today, I went to Petco in hopes of adopting a new pet . When I saw a red Tegu I was so excited ! I FaceTimed my husband to show him and see what he thought . For those of you who don't know tegus are very large and expensive lizards this one was almost 500$ so of course I wanted to show my husband first . As I was squatted down showing my husband the tegu I was approached by two employees who immediately said " WE DO NOT ALLOW PICTURES TO BE TAKEN OF OUR ANIMALS . ESPECIALLY IF YOU POST THEM ON FACEBOOK " . I was shocked I was being spoken to that way and I said " I wasn't taking pictures " they then kept accusing me of lying one employee even walked over to see what was on my phone screen??? Wow boundaries ? Not only did you loose a sale today on a 500$ lizard plus the 300 I would've spent on supplies , you lost a loyal customer who didn't post on Facebook but instead gave you a 1 star rating on Yelp. To the person that stated as a matter of fact re: iguanas. That wasn't grated cheese, it was butternut squash but maybe ask next time before you hide behind the old keyboard. And if you knew anything, crickets get into and out of everything. They don't feed crickets to iguannas but to the chameleon above them, the bearded dragons geckos, and water dragons on one side, or the tarantula, firebelly skink on the other. But hey I shop there all the time, have bought multiple reptiles from them and the are always healthy and happy. read more

I came to Petco to get toys for my 7-week-old puppy, and saw that one of the dog trainers was throwing dog toys off the rack to the pets being trained, and putting them back. The reason this upset me is because my puppy does not have its shots, and seeing that the trainer had thrown the toys to the dogs being trained worried me as to what diseases or sicknesses these dogs could potentially have. I will no longer shop for toys here, given that I do not know where the dog toys have been, and it upsets me that I cannot even trust such a large branded store with buying "new" dog toys for my pup. read more

I take my Jack Russell in once a month to get his nails trimmed and buffed. They always do an awesome job and my little Buster loves the girls that work in the grooming Dept at Petco Northtown. Always in and out in no time and his nails always look great. I would 100 percent suggest the grooming Dept at this location. read more

But, I only go to this location when I absolutely need to, otherwise I'll wait until I am on the south end of town. Don't recommend this store at all. The staff are friendly enough I guess, but in my experience they are grossly incompetent. Bought some Koi fish from there and both died within a week. I returned the fish and tried again thinking it may have been a bad batch or something. These two died within the first two weeks. They tested my water and everything came back perfect except my pH reading was high (7.8). They told me this was killing the fish and I had to bring the pH down. Any Koi expert will tell you Koi actually thrive at higher pH and trying to adjust the pH of my water would do more harm then good. I'd be constantly adding acids to it since the tap here in Reno comes out between 7.6 to 7.9. It's the pH changes that are mostly responsible for unhealthy fish. Well, the staff argued with me until they were blue in the face and basically told me I was lying and that I shouldn't listen to what people tell me. How right they were. I finally gave up and went to PetSmart on S. Virginia. All 6 of the Koi I bought from them are thriving to this day (about a year later and after a winter hibernation). In fact, this PetSmart purposefully keeps the pH of their Koi tanks at 7.6 because they know most of the customers will be acclimating their Koi to outdoor ponds in the area with alkaline pH. PetSart (not Petco) is a pet store that knows their business and their clientele. read more

Service is usually dreadful, no one is there when you need them and when you ask someone for help, its as if you just ruined their day. Get a new job if you don't like working with animals, and people. I go there often due to the fact my snake and Bearded dragon need to eat. They have information packets that have helped me with my animals as well as a wide variety of food and vitamin choices for my lizard. We followed her advice on how to get our picky, "live prey only" diet-prone ball python to eat safer frozen mice and it worked GREAT. Our non-furry family member now eats frozens exclusively. Their store is clean, well stocked, and they even have a bird visiting area (which is mostly kept well ventilated). Was at petco today looking for some new items for my iguana when I noticed that they sell iguanas here. So of course I went over and looked at them but something seemed off they were all cuddling. I looked at the temp gauge in there and it was at 70 that is way toooo cold for them it needs to be 80 or higher and then I looked at their food dish and it looked like like it had graded cheese on top of the greens. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw something jump it was a CRICKET!! Iguanas can't have dairy let alone crickets or other bugs it will kill them. I was so disturbed by this that I had to leave the store. Do not buy your iguana from them they look very ill and petco needs to fix this problem or not sell them. I'll be sticking to Sierra aquatics and petsmart for my reptile supplies for now on. read more

okay so - I've came here in the past a handful of times to get my small mix dog a nail trim and a bath. every time I've gone it's just been a walk-in. this morning I woke up and thought it would be nice to get her a bath and a trim since her hair is really long and starting to get matted. I called petco and pressed number 1 for the grooming line and listened to hold music for just a little over an hour. my roommate called as well, several times and got no answer. at this point we decided to just look online for pricing. at petco.com, there was a section to create an account and set up the date and time for an appointment. we did this and found that every single date and time said "none available" as far as the calendar went. obviously this seemed like a website error, so we gathered her leash and shot records and began walking since we don't have a car. the walk took almost two hours. once we arrived, we asked if they had any services available for walk in. the woman working asked what we needed done and I said we were looking for a bath and a haircut but anything at this point would've been better than nothing after coming so far. the lady became almost hostile immediately, explaining that we should've called and they clearly don't have anything available. the room was literally empty and when we walked in the door they were just standing there talking to each other. I said that we did call and were on hold for an hour and she said "yeah well we're busy so..." I asked what we were supposed to do for future reference and "just wait next time since it would've sent you to voicemail and we ALWAYS check the voicemails. also you could've made an appointment online since we don't ever do walk-ins". I told her the booking wasn't available for like 6 months and that every time we've come in before (she checked and my dog was in the system) was a walk in and she said "well that's not my fault." I told her I understand that there wasn't anything she could've done since my roommate and I work in retail and we get it but honestly, when you work I customer service you understand that it's easy and literally your job to be nice to people. I've had people scream at me full volume and I can proudly say I have never in my life given anyone attitude or been anything other than apologetic, even if I know I wasn't in the wrong. you never know what's going on in another person's life and in my case I had to walk really fucking far for no reason trying to scrape some change together just to try and take care of my little dog. we walked around the actual store for a while just since we came all that way and funnily enough the music would cut out every so often and you'd hear "call waiting, grooming line one" and never once did they pick the call up. definitely will be finding a new place to get grooming services done. read more

I went into petco to buy a basking light for my beardie and before I came in I was looking at prices online. I spoke with Caleb and he showed me which light was the one on sale. He let me know the correct price would ring up at the register. He was very patient with all my questions ( first time bearded dragon owner). Caleb was very knowledgeable and kind. He also gave me tips on feeding and diet needs. Overall my whole experience was great. The other crew members were very friendly as well. I will definitely be going back for all my pets needs. I called and asked if I needed an appointment for a nail trimming, was told I didn't. Me and my dog walked all the way there and the grooming department was closed down. The store doesn't close until 8pm and I arrived at 5pm. I'm very disappointed, I have been coming to this store for 8 years, I was told they close down if there isn't enough traffic, I would have appreciated if the person I had talked to on the phone would have told me that. I've been taking my pets here for 4, 5 years ...always a turnover in groomers, the good ones don't stay long but after today's event I will not be doing business with them any longer. I had a grooming appt at 9 am and arrived 7 minutes after. The gal who was scheduled to groom my dog was working on another dog, clearly not ready for my dog ... I know when I bring them in they usually wait for their spots because they overbook. Today no different except the groomer tells me because you are 11 minutes late she can't take my dog. I asked her 'well you aren't ready to start my dog anyway nor was she ready at 9. The dog she was working on she clearly had been working on before my Appt. She tells me they are overbooked after having Booked my Appt in excess of a week prior. I go into the main store to talk to a manager and they don't over see the grooming side apparently no one does. Had I even got there before 9 my dog probably would have sat for hours waiting. No more will I do business w them. The groomer was rude and disinterested in my business. read more

Brought my dog here to get groomed and was the worst experience I've ever had. Upon picking her up, I was informed she was cut during her grooming service. I was told "it's not bad", it was still bleeding when I got her. The groomer said it was her fault because she jumped, and the reason why the rest of the cut isn't very good is because she wouldn't stop squirming after she was cut. The hair on her head is still so long it's covering her eyes, and some of her nails weren't even cut causing them all to be uneven. Will never bring my dog back her, after 5 years of haircuts this was the worst by far. Very disappointed in Petco and their staff. read more
