I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern regarding a recent experience at Petco, specifically involving an employee named Nick. My family and I were in the process of adopting a cat we had met and hoped to bring home. During a brief interaction, Nick asked my husband whether we would declaw the cat. My husband clearly responded that we would not. Nick then asked if any of our current cats are declawed, to which my husband answered honestly: one of our cats was already declawed when we adopted him.
Despite our clear intentions and long history as responsible pet owners, we were later informed--without further discussion--that the cat had been given to another family. When I returned to the store to seek clarification, I was shocked by the way I was treated. Nick openly acknowledged that he and I had not spoken the day prior, yet he told me that he simply had a "sense" that we weren't a good fit for adoption. When I asked for specific concerns or criteria we did not meet, he was unable to provide any.
What was even more upsetting was the tone and nature of the interaction. Rather than having a respectful dialogue, I was accused of being racist and threatened with removal from the store--despite remaining calm and simply trying to understand the decision. I left feeling judged by someone who admittedly knew nothing about me or my family.
This experience has been both hurtful and disheartening. I truly hope that Petco will take this feedback seriously and provide better training for staff around professionalism, respectful communication, and transparency in the adoption process. Every animal deserves a loving home, and every potential adopter deserves to be treated with dignity and fairness. read more
