On our way to a dinner reservation at The Pig & The Lady, Jamie W and I made a point of stopping by this boutique. Even though we don't own a pet, we have friends who do and became curious about the shop through a local YouTube vlogger. What makes it unique is that it's a gay-owned business. As I accurately surmised, they offer locally sourced pet food and treats and specialty accessories in a friendly and inclusive space. Some of the treats looked appetizing enough for human consumption like ahi tuna jerky and dried duck necks (Photo 7). Of course there were Spam musubi squeaker toys and a variety of leashes in a multitude of colors (Photo 2). They even offered merch for non-pet owners like us. Just absolutely love "the public pet.". We have been visiting this local pet store ever since it opened years ago. The owner Jordon is very friendly and pleasant. He is involved with lots of local gatherings keep it kaimuki. We attend functions of Keep it Kaimuki when we visit the island. Our corgi loves the shrimp treats at the public pet and we always love getting new festive collars and harnesses for her. The stickers are my favorite, I love getting new ones for my luggage. Keep it Kaimuki lured me into the Public Pet! They were having a 20% off the entire store sale and I decided that with my new puppy on the way I would check them out. Parking was tough and there was a line out the door. When there's a line, you know they're good! I waited in line for about 5 minutes and when I went in I was immediately greeted at the door. After browsing and picking up some dog toys a lady asked how I was doing. She helped me pick a collar, treats, and a bandana. She was so extremely helpful. Yes, I've had dogs in the past, but man have things changed. It's been about 10 years since I've had a puppy. This store contains all the trendy pet items. Passed by this pet shop during my time in Hawaii and decided to pick up some souvenirs for my furbaby. There was a huge selection of local, single ingredient treats (for both cats and dogs) which I loved since I don't like giving my dog treats with lots of additives. The staff members were super friendly and answered any questions we had/provided recommendations on the most popular treats. They also had other pet supplies like toys and leashes but we decided we only wanted to pick up stuff we can only get in Hawaii. I came across this place when I was taking a detour to work up Waialae. There used to be a cat cafe next door but I guess they didn't make it. :( You need to knock to be let in (the door is locked during business hours), which might deter you a little, but persist! The shop is full of everything you ever might want or need for your fur child(ren). I swing by specifically to pick up the Yak sticks (dogs), which are such a huge hit. I also come here for the bigger antlers for chewing (dogs), the Roo's Rock Candy (cats), and for all of the stickers and odds and ends that they carry by local artists. I have a picky super senior chi that won't eat anything and we tried the cat poke food that she loves here. Great service. They keep the door locked for security, so just knock when you get there. This is such a cute little gem of a pet shop! I couldn't bring my pup with me to Hawaii, so of course I had to bring something back for him. I've seen local pet owners post pictures on Instagram about this place which is how I found out about it. There's lots of different treats, toys & leashes/harnesses/collars from local small business owners. Customer service was great! 9-25-21 Second shop I visited during the When On Waialae event. Wow! Think exclusive items for pampered felines and canines. The front door is locked so you need to knock and they will come to the door to let you in. Furry family members are allowed entrance too! The shop smelled great kinda like lavender. I should have asked if it was a floor cleaner or a room diffuser or spray. Regardless, it made my shopping experience delightful. I'm cursed with a super sensitive nose- good smells, bad smells... Stephanie approached me and offered assistance while I was browsing and reading the label on the the $15.00 ahi jerky package. I noticed and Liked the outfit and earrings she had on, very classy. I mentioned to her that the groomer had told me to give my Pom omega 3. She said it's good for the hair. She mentioned the components of omega 3 and the ahi jerky. Sold, 2 packages please. I purchased 3 products total. The shop had a 10% discount event at the time so that was super nice. As you enter to the left are cat items followed by dog items and in the middle I was told was a mixture. I only checked out half the shop cuz more people, pets arrived. Oh the Joy of owning a new puppy! Unfortunately our baby has been having allergies so I am traveling down that road of researching, purchasing and trying out new things. I'm still on the fence if I will try feeding raw vs home cooked and that's how I was recommended to check out the Public Pet. The employee there was super friendly and helpful in talking to me about her experiences and what she would recommend. Rhe store has such a great selection of products both local and hard to find items that many large stores don't carry. Any cat or dog lover would find something for their fur baby here. The store is kept really clean and organized. They also have a selection of raw items that I was interested in looking at and discussing. I ended up leaving with some treats,2 lb beef chub, venison bone broth, and a mini knuckle bone. So far the broth has been a hit over the kibble and my pup spent a few hours chewing on the knuckle bone today. Ever since their doors opened, this has become one of my FAVORITE places to go for the fur kid. Each item in that shop has been carefully curated to benefit your fur kid to live their best life. Jordan and Matty along with their staff are EXTREMELY amazing and knowledgeable. And they have the best door greeters ever! Yes, I'm looking at you Miss Maluca! They are very involved in the community and support local business. Prior to the pandemic, they hosted many pop-up events that highlighted local businesses and artists. When the pandemic began, they were proactive in ensuring the safety of others by coming up with creative ideas to assist us pet parents whether it may be from limiting customers to taking phone orders and to curbside pick-up. To this day, they have been doing so great in adjusting and passionately serving the pet community with amazing service. Well behaved fur kids are also welcomed to this place as long as they are leashed. Be warned though, your fur kid may want to buy everything in that store. "Keeping It Kaimuki- the neighborhood pet store experience" Kaimuki over the years had different mom n pop pet stores and then somewhere I believe in the 80s, they disappeared. Many would argue, a neighborhood town cannot be considered complete without a pet store. And so it was, for many, many years, Kaimuki was not "whole". Then in 2006, The Public Pet was born. A boutique pet store which caters to the needs of man and beast, they focus on selling local/independent supplier products. It doesn't sell pets, but rather items that cater to pets. Food, treats, toys, accessories, even stuff for people. A major theme for the area originated here at The Public Pet. "Keep It Kaimuki" was developed by The Public Pet guys. They are a source for any new Keep It Kaimuki T shirt and bag designs. At our most recent visit this week we went to check out the cool stuff they had to offer. Always in the mood for a treat, Princess Mochi got a sample of some of their locally made fish jerky. After a strongly positive tail wagging response to the treat sample, we bought a container of locally made dry opah fish jerky which the pooch enthusiastically approved of. Located on Waialae, next to Popoki & Tea, this place is such a cute pet store. When we walked in my puppy was immediately greeted and offered a treat! I'd say this place is the equivalent to like a Red Pineapple of pet stuff... the items are merchandised throughout the store and you can find something adorable everywhere you turn! Pros: -Love the selection of local items. -The treats are super unique, like deer hooves and chicken feet chews. -The staff is incredibly knowledgeable! I have an insane addiction to my dog. Like, it is almost a problem how much I love her. A huge chunk of my paycheck goes to her. I might need an intervention. Going ewa down Wai'alae Ave, The Public Pet is on the right, after XO Restaurant. Usually when I'm planning on going to a new place I do a good amount of research because I don't like looking like a dummy. However, I didn't really PLAN on going here at that specific moment, but I had to kill time so I walked from the big lot for Big City Diner and those other shops, down to The Public Pet. It was a really nice walk and I got to see a bunch of new shops I had no idea existed. When I got to The Public Pet they were actually at capacity so they asked if I could wait outside. Normally I'd be somewhat meh about that but they are located next to this cute CAT CAFE so I got to watch the kitties through the window! 100% worth the wait! Eventually it was my turn to enter. The Public Pet is a cute little pet shop perfect for people who are as obsessed with their pets as I am. It is primarily tailored to dogs but they did have an area for cats. I am always on the hunt for dog treats for my spoiled pup. The more natural the better and if I can support local then I am all in. I bought 2 types of jerky (chicken and ahi) by Poi Dog Treats and a cute leash because 3 really isn't enough for 1 dog. This is a super cute pet boutique if you have a fur baby. It's a little bit on the pricy side but they do carry better pet foods and snacks. They are located in kaimuki in between 8th and 9th Avenue. There's some street parking out front. 25 cents will give you 10 minutes. And there is also a little patch of grass for your fur baby too! Customer service here is great. I did not buy anything as I have way too many dog snacks. but I did go in to take a peek. Your dog is completely welcomed here. And it's super clean too! They have a bunch of pop ups here which I haven't been able to go to. They have a vendor that sells popsicles for dogs and my dogs love it! read more

After a long day of shopping and running around the tiny town of Kaimuki in the hot Saturday sun with my tiny pup, Olaf, we stopped to take a quick breather on the corner of Waialae and 9th. While sipping on my smoothie from Leahi Health, I looked at my puppy and he looked at me. He gave me that look. You know, the look... ladies you know which look. It's the look you get from your significant other after they've followed you around the shopping mall. The "what about me look"--it was then I knew that after keeping me company all day, I needed to treat this good boy for being so patient. Located in the heart of Kaimuki town lies the cutest, trendiest, and friendliest pet store around. I would highly recommend taking your furry friend to see Jordan and the staff at The Public Pet. Immediately upon entry, we were greeted with the warmest hello and welcome. In COVID-times they've sectioned off a small section of the store immediately upon entrance with the cash register and a few cute Knick-knack items. The staff here is so friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable of all things pet related. You need snacks and treats for your pet? They got it. You need cool swagger so that your pet lookers the best dressed? They got it. You wanna celebrate a pet in your life? They got some stuff to help you with. On my most recent adventure to The Public Pet, I picked up a new musubi squeaky toy, some snacks, a few cute pet shaped plant holders, and masks. The streets of Kaimuki were alive on Saturday and these guys were busy. Not a problem with me. Anything for our fur babies, right? Plus there was plenty to see and check out in the area--cool walls, other cute boutique shops, new eats, and super awesome coffee shops, of course! They even have an uber cute cat cafe next door! So far Olaf has been majorly in love with his new squeaky musubi toy and the snackies that I picked up for him. It's Caturday, a day when future feline parents head out in search of feline fur baby adoptees. If you are a pet lover, you will love The Public Pet. It's like visiting a local craft fare only difference is products at The Public Pet are for your fur babies NOT you! LOL The product line at The Public Pet more than likely won't be found at the larger box stores. Their items are not cheap by any means BUT made with tender loving pet care! A good example for myself is my kitty has so many leashes and kitty clothes that now sit in a box. A couple items I purchased from The Public Pet is liked by my fussy kitty. So that in itself is a testament to the product line. And yes, I adopted a little one. I did originally name her Goldie Gizmo but have since changed her name to Goldie Gidget! A little kitten not yet large enough to be spayed but large enough to run all over my home! AND I love it!
