Visited this place twice. First visit, the guy Kyle gave me a little grief about not parking right in front of the shop (I'd parked down the road a little ways in a metered area). No biggie. Second visit, I parked in front of the store where he'd said to, but I had a few questions about products--ie. what was available, what kind of bedding he might recommend, did he also sell pop-up chicken runs, etc. Nothing too big. We're talking no more than a minute, max. He responded lazily to each question, "No" or "I don't know." And not knowing isn't a problem; that's understandable. So I made my decisions on my own, and while doing so a blonde woman walked into the store, she grabbed a bag of dog treats I think, he took her money, and she left while I was getting my money out at the counter. After I paid him, he made a comment to me: "You sure do ask a lot of questions." I didn't know how to respond because I'd only asked three basic questions, but he continued, "Like, how come you can't be like the other person? She just came in, grabbed her stuff, and left." I responded, "I mean, if answering questions is too hard, I don't have to shop here. I can go to Wahiawa Feed or somewhere else." He doubled down on not wanting to answer questions, while he sat there scrolling on his phone. Like, I don't know, man, why bother having a store? I feel like if you're going to have products, you're going to get a couple questions about the products. But it seems like he just wants to be left alone so he can scroll on his phone all day long. This isn't the case at Wahiawa Feed or other local stores I've been to. So, hey, if you just wanna go in, get out, not interact with anyone, I guess this place is great, but Kyle seems to have checked out of life at this point. I see the same person every time we go to buy chicken feed. He is polite and always loads the bag of feed into the back of my vehicle, which makes it very convenient since there is no parking. Depending on what time you go, usually no one is parked in front of the store, you hop out and pay (cash only), he gets the feed, loads it and you're off. So convenient!! read more

I remember City Feed on Beretania Street from when I was in preschool. Yes, I remember that far back, for some things. This is one of them. City Feed used to sell live chicks. My mom would walk me over after school at Olivet Baptist Preschool so I could look at the chicks. I hadn't been there in years, and they have since done away with the live chicks. I pass by the store all the time and it makes me happy that they are still there and thriving. In the last 6 months, my companines have become parents to a chicken and more recently, a rooster. I called City Feed to inquire on Scratch Feed. They still sell 5 lbs. of feed in doubled paper bags. Larger sizes are available. Parking is, well, there really isn't any. The space fronting the store is a loading zone, which also doubles as a "grab-n-go" stall. It's actually really great, if you are purchasing huge bags of food. Not a far distance from store to car. As long as the fowl continue to live with us, City Feed will have me coming back. read more

He's awesome! The shop owner is so helpful. I didn't know what I needed when I first started coming here. I just walked in and asked what's good to use for cat litter. I heard that some kind of pellets are ideal. He immediately said yes I got you covered! He came out with a huge bag of pine pellets. His recommendation was spot on. I haven't used anything else since. It's been over a year now that I've been coming. I can lift the bag easy, but he'll always carry it out for me to my car. He's very sweet. Parking is easy. This store is super small so most of the time, you're in and out in less than 3 minutes. I usually by the naturally kitty litter here and the guy never lets me carry it out on my own. He puts it in my trunk for me... so sweet the guy ah? By the way, this natural litter thing is amaze-balls! It doesn't have those tiny little grains that get stuck between the kittys toes as she steps out of the litter box and all over the ground.........plus it helps with the ammonia smell too. My kitty has been throwing up lately so I came her to find a healthier/natural type of food. I'm still trying to find the right dry food for her (she's picky). However, she LOVES the Premium Fussie Cat can food in tuna/chicken. She pounds that thing and licks the bowl clean! If you're a pet lover, this is the place to buy their stuff! So there I was at home with my giant rabbit Sophia, and she was getting hunger like the wolf. So I reached into my Petco bag of hay which cost me around $97 and all that was left was a few gray brittle strands. So I then scooped out the last of my rabbit pellets that I got from target for 5 pounds for $11 and I realized that something had to change, because this rabbit was costing me way too much money. That's when I looked yelp for feed stores in honolulu and MAN i'm glad I found this place. There are four reasons why I'm glad. 1. 25 pounds of rabbit food!!! 2. a big bag of hay!! 3. City Feed sells animal feed. It is not your run of the mill pet store. It is also helpful if you know what you're looking for. This is therefore not the place to go if you have a new pet. I would suggest figuring out which brand of food your pet likes and then come here to buy TONS of whichever type floats their boat. I walked in having no idea what to buy and the owner was really friendly and helpful. His cute, fat cat lay sprawled out on the counter when I walked it, but got up to get petted when I was paying. SOOOO FLUFFYYY! And cute! Once I figure out which kind of food my dog likes, I'll be back :) P.S. there is no parking. NONE. there is a "freight loading area" out front and some street parking which is almost always full. My suggestion? Befriend someone in the neighborhood! Did you know a rabbit's diet should consist of 80-90% timothy hay (NOT alfalfa)? My rabbit Sophie (not like you care what her name is) used to refuse timothy hay and I was really concerned about her health. Luckily City Feed provides fresh timothy hay approved by my fur baby. I just want to state three reasons why rabbit owners in Honolulu should check City Feed out. 1) Great price. A large sack of timothy hay costs $3.50, even though the owner calls it a small bag. I seriously could feed an army of rabbits with this sack of hay. 2) Amazing quality. The timothy hay is significantly fresher than any hay I bought at pet stores such as PetSmart and Petco. I noticed right away when I opened the sack of timothy hay because it smelled like freshly cut grass. The rich appearance of the hay also surprised me. Before I was accustomed to seeing dusty, unappetizing, faded hay sold at retail stores. Here, the stalks are colored in an array of fresh green colors which truly evidences its superior quality. 3) Efficiency. This owner does not waste time, and I love it! I am always in a rush and this transaction seriously takes less than a minute. This is especially great due to the dismal parking situation. I usually park right in front of City Feed because I am gone in a flash. Bonus: Buddy the store pet! The owner said he found Buddy at the store when he was a kitten...awwww!! Surprised the owner would not tell me the price of Timothy Hay over the phone. When I asked why, he said "Because Petco will match or beat my price and I have to protect my business". I explained that I live in Ewa, need 5 bags of hay each month, and wanted to know what to expect before driving all the way to town - especially since it is cash only. He said, "Well, you better go to Petco then". Not exactly the best way to earn a new customer. I like to support local businesses, and I am willing to pay a little more to do so - with that I would like to receive a minimum level of service. City Feed is an institution of sorts, having been around for years. This family-owned business offers a limited assortment of dog, cat, bird, guinea pig/rabbit supplies for prices that are substantially lower than other locations. The owner, Kyle, is very helpful and will specially order items for you upon request. City Feed suffers, I think, for its location, where parking is very difficult to find, and its tiny size, which makes it impossible to carry a large selection of anything. It resembles a large garden shed in its rough, aged appearance, and the day I shopped there it was extraordinarily HOT inside. Wow. But given the helpful manner of the owner, Kyle, and the great prices, I would return. One important thing to remember is that City Feed is CASH or CHECK ONLY. This place has it all. Everything is a few dollars cheaper than the pet stores for my cat food and litter needs. If only I didn't live in a non pet-friendly apartment, I would buy the 20 lb bag of kitty food. That's the ultimate bang for your buck. The store also sells horse bedding, $9 for 20lb which is practically the same as Feline Pine. Bought it once and will never look back because the pellets are bigger so therefore they last longer. Plus, it's cheaper than Walmart for Feline Pine. The owner is really nice and helpful. He gives me paper bags for my cat food so I can sneak it back home :) He brings in two fluffy cats sometimes to the shop...I wish my cat was as nice as his. I stumbled upon the City Feed when I was yelping for a bunny vet, go figure lol. But I am glad I found City Feed because they have the best price for rabbit food and litter products. I can't really speak for the other pet products since I only have bunnies, but I saved a lot of money by going to City Feed! Woohoo! Prices are great, cash only, no tax. It's a small store but they have a lot of stuff. I was specifically looking for whole oats so was calling all feed stores on Oahu. Nobody had what I was looking for or even knew what it was!! I was getting so frustrated and finally found city feed and he said he had. I doubted him at first but since it was only 10 mins away, I headed down there. He explained to be the difference between whole oats and oat groats and even showed me little jars with samples of all the grains he had. FINALLY SOMEONE WHO KNEW WHAT THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT. Since whole oats are "rare", he said he only sold small amounts but could order me a 50lb bag. I was stoked! I got it within a week. DEALS!!! Talk about your hole-in-the-wall, mom-and-pop, hidden gem of pet food and supplies! This place has pet food in bulk for a fraction of the cost of some of the larger pet store chains. We stumbled upon this store after our family acquired / rescued a HORRIBLE cockatoo. She squawks whenever anyone is on the phone, at the door, or when someone is trying to concentrate on anything...and the squawks are DEAFENING. She hates everyone except my mom and has taken huge chunks of skin out of my dad's arms when he tries to hold her. I don't even attempt it. She has terrible anxiety and was nearly bald when we got her because she plucks her feathers out...and she now has bald patches where the feathers won't grow back. BUUUT being the animal lovers that we are, we have kept and (sort of) learned to love this ugly, annoying, gigantic bird. ...and I digress... Molly, as this creature prefers to be called, has a diverse palette, but we always have the mixed bird feed from City Feed on hand. The staff is super nice and helpful, and since parking is kind of tough, they're willing to help you get in and out as quickly as possible in case you have to illegally pull up on the side of busy Beretania for a pit stop. read more

If I could give this place negative stars I would! After reading the reviews online I didnt call and ask feed prices before driving all the way over there, but I did call to make sure he was opened. Upon arrival, I attempted to walk into the store where I was greeted with a "what are you looking for? I'll get it and bring it here for u." Ok, nice I suppose. But I said how I was looking to price the feed, as we take multiple feeds to make our mixture and other bags of feed for the other animals. Spend a good $400 a month at least to feed the animals. I got a, "no I can't let you in here. I don't want ppl hanging out in my store." No offer of one person going in to check and look. No accommodations at all! I said ok no worries we will buy from somewhere else! He just lost out on extra money! Family Feed is ALWAYS so helpful with prices and service and dropping the price if we buy bulk! Victory Feeds is a little further but worth the drive. Extremely friendly and helpful! And excellent prices!!!! Won't EVER BE BACK HERE!!!! Not even if all the stores we go to were closed!!!! If you are still buying your pet food from big box pet stores like Petco, or even local pet stores like Petland, you are paying too much. City Feed, a small family run business running out of what looks like a storage shed has been on Beretania St. for decades. I would pick up bird feed from here many moons ago when I used to commute into town for school. But I will make my rounds to here every couple of months now for my rabbit food and bedding material. Hours and parking might not be the most convenient, but pricing, knowledge and service will more than make up for that. Whether you have a farm in your backyard or something more domesticated, you will find something here. If your pet could talk to you, he/she will say "head down to City Feed for my dinner!"
