My groomer did an excellent job once again. I love this store. They are so sweet and friendly and truly love the dogs. My one suggestion is to add a grooming entrance to the store. There use to be one before the remodel, and now it is inconvenient when you have an early morning groom before the store is open. You are left standing out in the weather, wondering if someone is going to let you in. Please add a grooming entrance back in to the store on Great Hills Trail. read more

I would NOT be giving a star for this place, however in order to submit this, I have to. On 6/8 I over heard a lady in the parking lot screaming at someone on the phone- this went on for about 20 min. Having looked up about twice to see that she was still going at it with the person on the phone, I looked up for a 3rd time- now seeing that she was with a dog whom was on a leash-however was just letting run around the parking lot. Busy parking lot. It was hot and the dog was trying to stand under the shade, but the lady just kept screaming on the phone.. turns out IT WAS AN EMPLOYEE! APPALLED at what I was witnessing, I called the store and spoke to someone about it. Also that I would meet the person inside as well. I was approached by a younger Hispanic female and younger Hispanic male in the store and verified if the lady was the one I spoke to. After her saying they would take care of it, nothing else- we went into the parking lot and I went back to my car to continue watching. The male employee took the dog immediately inside. Not sure where the female employee went that said she would take care of it, but the employee who was screaming on the phone, had finished smoking her cigarette- and proceeded back inside. The dog was rather small, easily could've been hit by a car do to its size, it was so hot out- around 12pm and not to mention the parking lot is just off of 183 access road.. I reached out to petco to I form them about what I had witnessed and to be honest, have not heard anything from anyone!! If you value your dog's or have taken them here to get groomed, HIGHLY suggest to rethink and go else where- so so unacceptable for an employee to treat someone else's property with such disregard!!! read more

This review is mainly directed towards the store manager Mary. She is HORRIBLE, and extremely rude. I repeat HORRIBLE. I called to speak to a manager due to my dog having a skin infection -- and having seen Petco as the most recent groomer. I was only calling to notify them, and not even complain. Since that seemed like the right thing to do. On our initial call she seemed nice, and like she wanted to help. She told me she would call me back shortly after speaking to the salon manager, but then never did. I had to call them back and they hung up on me 3 times, so when I finally got someone to pick up it was her and she was terrible to talk to. She accused me of neglecting my pet. And when I asked "are you accusing me of my pet having a skin infection." she immediately gave no answer, and transferred me to the salon manager Megan. Unfortunately, I let Megan have it and tell her how horrible Petco is and what a bad person Mary is...but no information was ever relayed to Megan. Mary did not tell the salon manager anything. Obviously, I ended up apologizing to Megan because she was very nice and professional about the whole matter. Megan is great, and told me she would be talking to the GM and they would both be calling me about this in the morning. BUT Mary is a terrible, terrible store manager with horrible customer service. Did I mention that the kid has a new pup? I had forgotten how expensive all the accoutrements to outfit a new dog would be. Almost $200 later, we are out of Petco and driving home, the kid dizzy with excitement for all the new "toys" and I'm pale and slightly nauseous about what we spent. The customer service and our experience was great. Mary, the in-house dog trainer, was fantastic. She bonded with us, well, maybe we bonded with her, and escorted us through the store answering our questions and giving us advice. Arya, assuming the role of Diva for a Day, tried on collars, leashes, sweaters, sampled lots of dog treats and received heaps of praise from Mary for her good behavior. I have always loved the Gilda Radner quote about dogs. "They give unconditional love and for me they are the role model for being alive." Perhaps that is reason enough to lavish Arya with all her new toys and gifts. read more

So the only reason I came to Petco is because I ordered an aquaponics fish tank that came with a coupon for a $.99 beta. But Petco would only honor the coupon if I was a Petco member. (rawr) Fine. So I hold up the one open cashier's line while the poor girl searched for me in the Petco database since I thought I was a member. She couldn't find me in the system, but by that time, everyone in the line knew my first name, last name, maiden name and email address, which I had to spell like 5 times so she could get me into the member system. As I've mentioned lots and lots of times before, I'd take PetCo over PetSmart ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. This is the PetCo that's in my new 'hood, and I plan on being a relatively frequent visitor... what, with capability to get a free bag of cat food after buying ten? Yeah, that's why. That being said, this is a pretty standard PetCo... nothing really to write home about, especially because there's a brand spanking new one that just opened at home (see my previous review). Areas are well labeled and there's a cat care section as well as a cat section. I found this nifty. Also, they seem to have a plethora of the higher end kittycat foods, some which you can't find just anywhere. I didn't notice any associates on the floor, which brought them down to 3 stars instead of 4. I was going to ask about oral hygenie for my orange kitty with the foulest cat breath I've EVAR smelled... stupid jerk for biting my nose. But, I digress. The guy at the register was a little creepy, but I can't quite figure out how. He wasn't overly friendly but he perhaps had sort of a pedophile vibe to him. My dog's have kennel cough now. $165 to the vet and my babies are sick :(. They are both up to date on their shots. That being said, this was second visit and second bad experience.I wrote their customer service and let them know and they wrote back a form letter that told me they did not read my letter at all. I will NEVER go back. The first visit caused my dog to have an eye abrasion. I went to the ER with my dog. I made sure to ask for a different groomer this time and asked for special caution around my dog's eyes. They were supposed to trim one of my dogs-he was shaved :(. I'd like to give this store a higher rating since we shop there so often, but I can't. Once you become a member of the Petco "Pals" club, they have you! We have 3 dogs and we can't afford not to take advantage of the benefits it offers. I know Petsmart has a similar program, but we're in so deep with Petco it doesn't seem worth it to switch, especially since Petco is closer to our house, i.e. more convenient. The reason I give this store only 2 stars has nothing to do with product or price. The 2-star rating is given due to the fact they have consistently TERRIBLE customer service. First, just try to find someone to help you. Even if you find one of the high school losers who work there, don't expect them to know anything other than what time they get off work or who the Jonas Brothers are dating. Next, good luck when you're ready to check out. Why do so many stores have at least 6 checkout stands if they never have more than 2 open at any one time? Usually, they only have one checkout line open. Even when they reluctantly open a 2nd line, they'll always take the person who was at the END of the 1st line. I know it takes a little bit of common sense and common courtesy, but good customer service practice is to help the NEXT PERSON in Line #1 before helping the LAST PERSON. I know this might seem strange to one of their derelict employees, but at Petco it's just the way they roll. Damn you Petco for having such good prices! Petco is the Best Buy of the pet supply industry; great price, absolutely NO customer service. PetCo often has rescue groups on site, so you can adopt one of their dogs or cats. They also have a computer in the store for you to search for adoptable pets from petfinder.org. * Have a great natural dog food section. Read the labels of your dog food! I appreciate that PetCo offers a good selection of some of the higher quality brand dog foods and treats. * Squeeze my pups into their schedule at the last minute for grooming appointments. I have 2 dogs and they each have several black nails. I hate cutting them because I can't see the quick, so sometimes it is necessary for some professional help. Their bath package includes a bath, brush, ear cleaning, and nail trim, and they always do a good job with my boys. I also like that you can bring you pets with you to shop! read more

Awful. I've been coming here for over a year because it's convenient and can take my 80 lbs. pup a bath without hurting my back. I've had randomly bad customer service but nothing I couldn't overlook. However, the past two times I've walked out (without making a purchase) due to extremely bad attitudes by the employees and how they treat their customers. I've worked in retail and customer facing positions for more than 15 years and their poor customer service would not be tolerated in my experience. They may have "remodeled" but they need to clean house and take some major training on how to SPEAK to customers and ASSIST! Advice to upper management: Get some people in there who love their jobs and need a job and this will increase your sales. read more

This place used to be super friendly always. I feel like there may be a new manager in charge. We've started getting our bags of food auto delivered instead of going to the store (from petco.com) and we ran out of food before our next bag arrived so I went into the store to buy something to hold the dogs over until our next bag arrived. First, I went in with my two young sons and found some tubes of the blue wilderness food (2.25lbs) and grabbed it because there was a sign posted over the price tag that said 20% off. So....one would think it was 20% off. I walk up to the register as a group of ladies that work at the store are having a very animated conversation about a past customer. A young gentleman (no probs with this guy) rings me up. I get to my car and realize I didn't get the food for 20% off. I go in. Acknowledge that I did not read fine print on the 20% off sign, but want to make sure I get the discount if it's valid. I walk back with the manager, or I think she was he manager.....she is silent and has an attitude about her. I show her the sin and realize it specifically says "1lb"....so it does not apply to the bigger tubes. I kinda laugh it off but make a comment about the sign being a bit misleading. No apology or sense of humor from the manager lady. No release of tension. I leave feeling a bit gross but brush it off. Now here I am about to cut into the second tube of food and I realize it's expired a month ago. A MONTH. I call petco. Pretty sure I recognized the voice on the phone to be the same rude lady from yesterday. I tell her the situation. She just says "ok. If you come of we'll let you exchange it" Ummm. Are you kidding me? No apology? No acknowledgement of their wrongdoing in having expired products on the shelf? I understand that it's really a fairly small mistake on their end...but it is very inconvenient for me. And all I'd like is an apology. And to be treated like I might be an appreciated customer (we spend hundreds of dollars at petco monthly. We have 3 big dogs). Heck, to be treated like a human. My 17 year old cat is having kidney problems and absolutely refuses to eat any of the prescription cat foods available for her condition regardless of how they are presented. I was at my wits end and the cat was getting really thin until I remembered that Petco was transitioning o a more natural ingredient pet food model. I went in and told Johnny my problem and he knew immediately what ingredients I needed to avoid and found food with only 5 natural ingredients. I tried the new food tonight and my cat ate it. I will be watching carefully for any kidney symptoms and I will be reporting back to my vet but for now I am happy the cat is eating again. Even though I haven't given this location 5 Stars, this location is much better than the other pet store chains in Austin. +1.5 Stars Product Selection: They have a great selection of pet food which ranges from low to high-quality, toys, supplements, dental hygiene kits, cleaning products, diapers, beds, etc... I also prefer this particular Petco over other Petco and PetSmart stores because this Petco sells useful items that the other stores don't even carry. Cats: They don't sell prepared raw foods/meals, however, they do sell a nice assortment of high-end cat food such as Wellness Grain-free and Halo among others. (New cat owners: those are great brands to feed your cat since cats can't eat grains!). Other stores either don't carry the grain-free line of Wellness, or don't carry Halo at all so it's nice that Petco carries these brands. +1.5 Stars Checkout & Staff: I'm in and out very quickly since there's never a line at the check-out which is excellent. Just FYI some staff members are all polite and will gladly help you locate an item if you can't find it, however, don't rely on them for product advice as they don't know much about the products (they have the "I just work here" mentality) so definitely do your own research and don't expect any useful info from them. -2 Stars They're occasionally out of stock on specific foods or accessories I need, and it's a hassle to come all the way here just to leave empty handed. It happens much less often here than at other Petco's or PetSmart's though, (usually when they offer a big sale), but it still happens enough that I have to deduct some stars. Note: Petco doesn't ship their foods in airconditioned trucks, so in the 105+ degree heat of Texas, some items just aren't good once served. Your human nose might not detect anything is wrong, but your pet will certainly make a scene, and walk away without eating. (This happened on a 105-110 degree streak, so when I repurchased the same food during lower temperatures, they ate everything again just fine). However, I wish they'd turn on the AC in their trucks once they start reaching these scorching temperatures because I'm paying premium prices for this food, and I expect it to arrive in premium condition! read more

Kelly is the best! I have a small dog, Rosie, that I take to my parents' assisted living facility every day. Because I didn't request her, Rosie's last grooming was done by someone else who didn't Dremel her nails. When I picked Rosie up from my parents' place today I discovered that she had scratched my Dad's (age 91) arm while jumping on his lap. (FYI: your skin at 91 is like tissue paper!) I called Kelly immediately. Her response: How quickly can you get here? Within 20 minutes Rosie's nails were done, (at no cost!), as well as some post grooming touch ups. Rosie will return to her favorite place (my Mom's lap) tomorrow! Thank you Kelly! read more

So I am a fan of this location for multiple reasons. First, the self service doggy bath. LOVE! It takes the mess and the stress out of doing it at home and its not that expensive. We try to bathe our cocker spaniel once a month and this is perfect. They have all the necessary items to bath him and we don't have to do any of the clean up. Even on the day they said their dryer did no work and therefore we couldn't use it unless we had our own towels. We got our own towels from home. They felt bad for us so they gave us 50% off for our trouble. AWESOME! Second, grooming service. I went to a professional groomer and was very dissatisfied. It was not a great experience in the least. I asked the rescue of some other groomer recommendations and several mentioned Brad in the grooming department. I went to talk to him and he is great. He knew exactly what I was talking about cut wise. The cut lasted a great amount of time. Also, he finished ahead of schedule. The previous groomer I had took literally all day. Whereas at Petco, I took him in at 9 and he was out by 12. Yay! I will be definitely be going back. Also the price was perfect! It was the best price I have found for a cocker cut. Even better! Third, Petco Pals Rewards. Love it! It saves me money and I love that once you hit like a $100 of store credit over time you get $5 back. If you are avid animal lover and shopper this is a great deal. I also get deals on treats, food, toys, etc. Fourth, customer service. They are always willing to help, say hello, and lend a friendly hand with your pooch. I recently went to buy a birthday shirt for my dog, I know I am one of "those" parents, and I noticed they all had a weird stain on them. All of which could be easily washed out. I mentioned that no one would pay full price since they were all damaged and they said I was right and gave me a good percentage off. Score! I washed it when I got home and it was as good as new. And my last and final reason, my dog loves it. I love it. And it is where I met my sweet baby. They host many rescues and shelters adoptions, especially on Saturdays. They are helping organizations get animals adopted by providing a location where many can come and see all these cute, adorable faces that need a forever home. I AM NEVER TAKING MY DOG TO THIS PETCO AGAIN. This was our second visit to this location's pet spa, and as we entered the store my pup realized where she was and wanted to turn around. When I got her home she was wiped out as if it was a stressful event. I noticed another pup on the grooming table looking at me shaking like a leaf as the employee groomed her and didn't seem to care; neither petting her nor talking to her- as if the dog were a thing and task to be completed, not someone's fur-baby. They seemed nonchalant and uncaring. Our dog is very sweet, and well behaved. We have taken her to many other locations, and she's never acted like this. Her nails were also trimmed too short, and grossly uneven. It appears they got the quick on several of them. I highly do not recommend this location to any loving pet owner. read more

There's bad customer service. Then there's bad customer service with attitude; with snide tone, dramatic body language, and loud sighing. Throwing down product with eye rolling as well. That is what I have received multiple times at this location. Typically associates ask customers if they can be helped. That is not the procedure at this Petco. The associates seem to expect to have zero customer interaction. Not sure if this is solely poor hiring , though I do feel quite certain that the fried hair that have me attitude simply for asking for help didn't seem very coachable. I had a terrible experience at Petco Great Hills when I showed up for my appointment. The staff acted like I was causing them a major inconvenience by bringing my dog in to be groomed. It was clear that they do not like their job, and they wanted me to know that. Because they were so rude I ended up leaving without getting the dog groomed. I literally cried when I when I saw my maltipoo after his grooming, he just wasn't himself... they basically just shaved all his hair off... the first picture of him a few months prior after going to another groomer (I loved the groomer but they charged me $85 which is the only reason I wanted to try a cheaper route so I went to petco..... my biggest mistake. A few minutes after dropping Marlo off they called me and said that they had to cut his hair a little shorter (DIDNT KNOW SHORTER MEANT SHAVE HIM BALD) due to "mattes" I will say he did have a few mattes, but over all was well maintained...I brush him daily. I mean don't we pay a groomer to get the mattes out?? If I wanted him to look like this I could have bought a razor and shaved him myself , instead of spending $55 to have him shaved!!!! Overall horrible experience and will defiantly spend the extra $30 next time and go to some one who knows what they are doing. read more

TLDR: Won't match pricing of online competition, including Amazon. Can cost more than twice as much in-store for Andis blade replacements. The employees were great. My issue is with their policies. They are one of the last major retailers that won't price match Amazon and other online retailers (although they claim that they will match their own site's prices..). This was confirmed by a manager and an employee today. It is very much their right and prerogative to do so, but I repeatedly see products that are marked up to absurd amounts (IMHO) comparatively. Today's purchase that prompted this review involved a pet clipper that I purchased at a significant premium compared to online(absolutely my bad) a few years back, that now has a dull blade. The blade runs $16.36 on Amazon and $32.99 today in store. It runs about the same on other online retailers as Amazon. read more
