It is so refreshing to sit down at a place with a beautiful, laid back atmosphere and feel that if I were to close my eyes and point at the menu any thing that comes to my table will be excellent. This is probably the best restaurant in its league. I hate to drop names but they definitely outdo Gracie's and Birch. Money well spent. The service was great. We had three different staff members tend to us so that made me feel super special. I would've given four stars for the food but the service deserves five. :) I have to be honest -- the Pan seared foie gras didn't blow me away. I didn't like the texture of the foie gras. It felt undercooked and looked it also. The duck fat drippings were also too heavy for my liking. I wouldn't order it again. The Boneless chicken wing with Thai curry was good but nothing more. The taste was true to its name and the presentation was definitely interesting...like a reconstructed chicken wing. The Black spaghetti will have me going back for more 10,000x. Is that enough said? The Braised and smoked octopus was done exceptionally well. It was SO tender! The spices were very powerful but not overpowering. Great with a glass of white wine. Lastly! The Peanut butter and banana 'smore' was good. It would help to be a fan of bananas though! For our beverage, we shared the daquiri which I believe had pineapple juice and lots of rum. Persimmon might be my favorite restaurant in Providence. The service is top notch and the food is outstanding. When we come here we feel absolutely spoiled. Artistic aesthetics with incredible taste to back it up, Persimmon has it all. The food here is treated beautifully and thoughtfully. Each component has a purpose. The attention to detail is clear. You leave feeling like you were served art on a plate, not only by its looks but by your palate! Restaurant week 2019 was a dream. I got the tuna tartare, bronzini, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. My husband got the truffle beignets, pork shoulder, and sweet corn cookie popcorn dessert. I savored everything! The tuna tartare was beautiful and fresh, with mint as a garnish, and the tuna melted in your mouth. The truffle beignets were delightful, flavorful, and packed a punch. They were small but that was appropriate bc it would've been overwhelming if there was much more of them. The pork jus was cooked to perfection, with very homey sides that were made more sophisticated - including coleslaw (with dill!) and beans (with bacon!). The bronzini was STUNNING. The green squash sauce was delicious, and the fish again was so succulent and melted in your mouth. I also enjoyed the squash on the side. The desserts were both lovely. The corn popcorn dessert was especially very creative; the sweet corn was a perfect vehicle to make into a dessert. The service was wonderful. We did feel very cared for, and were even gifted with prosecco for our anniversary! I have no complaints with the service but felt it was the one area that could be improved upon, to bring it to a higher level of fine dining. I reached out and made a reservation over the phone. When we arrived I was told that we were at the "chef's station" which I had no idea of the meaning. We were walked over to a "breakfast bar" for lack of a better term, right next to the chef's pass! Our server (can't remember her name) was a perfect combination of personality and perfection. We ordered the steak as well as the spaghetti bolognese. The spaghetti came out first and was easily the best Italian dish I have EVER had! I'm not proud of myself, but I ordered a second portion! Being my first time ever going here, it was more than satisfying, from start to finish. We started with deviled eggs, beef tartar, and little gem (salad). Our service was on point. Water always refilled, cocktails always backed up promptly. Bobby was our server and we never had a need or want. Constantly checked on us. We came to Persimmon after visiting Johnson & Wales as the owner (Champe Speidel) is a JWU alumni. The restaurant was clean and modern in aesthetics if a bit loud (hard wood floors, plaster ceiling, bare tables, etc ...). It's separated into two main areas, a bar (with tables) and a dining area that features an open kitchen plan. I feel for any Chef/cook that have to work in this kind of setup but when done right (and this was) it's a treat for the patrons. The service was prompt, friendly and helpful but the food service a bit on the slow side (over two hours for dinner). Persimmon features mostly small plates (tapas) or Nouveau Cuisine, although they go out of their way not to call themselves either. The issue with small plate style servings is that you are encouraged to try multiple dishes, however in practice, while they may be individually delicious, they might not mix well over the course of a meal. Finally, the coffee and dessert service left a bit to be desired. Coffee was average, and apparently Persimmon's is trying to go the route of hipster coffee bar not offering the standard sugar/sugar substitute packets in favor of "artisanal" sugar lumps. Nothing ruins a meal like gimmicky offerings on established fare, especially when it's the last part of a meal. The desserts themselves were beautiful in appearance, but only average on consumption. So now at this point you might ask why 5 stars? Well, as stated before, Persimmon specializes in small plates. Of the 9 meal plates we ordered, 7 of them were out of this world amazing. As in tastes I've either never experienced, or were the penultimate experience of that dish. They were that good. The two that didn't make the cut were still so far above average as to bump a rating a star in their own right. Im summary, you go to Persimmon for one reason ... to enjoy excellent fare that you will most likely never find again. My first visit to Persimmon was great. My friend and I both ordered cocktails that we loved. I ordered something like the "Bartender's Choice", where I told my waitress what I was in the mood for (vodka and grapefruit) and the Bartender created a custom drink. It was delicious, made with fresh grapefruit juice, and came with the cutest label informing me everything that was in the drink. For food, the waitress suggested about 3 plates per person, so we ordered 3 vegetables and 3 pastas. The warm salad of different radishes, Braised greens beignets, Confit potatoes,for vegetables. A vegetable pasta dish with mushrooms that was incredible. I ordered a lobster risotto, and my friend ordered another pasta with meat. It was just the perfect amount that we were very satisfied, but unfortunately did not even have room for dessert, despite it looking amazing. In particular, the vegetable dishes were small, but it was a good amount to taste a few things without getting full. Vegetables came out first, and the pastas came out second. Anywhere. Again, it's perfect. However, filling? I can't say that. I had 4 plates throughout the evening, everything from vegetable beignets to NY strip. Chef Champe's version of early-summer gazpacho was divine -- bright, bursting with fresh sunny flavor -- was perhaps my favorite dish of the night, but honestly there wasn't a low point. Our service was impeccable, as was the cocktail I had to start the evening off. Our suggested wine pairings were exquisite and reasonably priced, which rarely go hand-in-hand. One thing: I think I needed another plate of food. The menu is a mix-and-match of vegetables, seafood, meats and pastas... Each category serves as a course of sorts. I wouldn't liken this to tapas as some of the dishes aren't really suitable for table sharing, but you will need to order 3-4 dishes along with a dessert to fill that belly. Champe Speidel, can we be friends? Sure you're a culinary mastermind (young owner/chef, a magician with local produce)...but you're just plain cool. The beau and I saw you at Eat Drink RI last month, inspiration struck, and he took me to Persimmon as a birthday gift - - - he knows me so well. A chic, intimate space in Bristol. A beautiful, beaming hostess greeted us and showed us to the table of our choosing (on a Tuesday evening, there were only four other parties for the 7p seating). Our server was Kevin (kind, charismatic, and very helpful in our menu deliberation!), my beverage order was the Bee's Knees (smooth, tangy, sweet), and I sat back along the banquet taking in the view. As an amuse bouche: the Westport cheese curd agnolotti with grilled ramp leaves, breakfast radish, green garlic, asparagus ribbons, mustard green flowers, goat's milk and herb emulsion ($13). If you thought that the title was a mouthful, wait until you get a load'a the FLAVOR. The dish was served for two, I savored every morsel, then I soaked up the remaining sauce with a piece of house-made bread. While this wasn't a particularly classy move, you would understand if you were to taste that emulsion you would understand my desperation. Main courses: for the gentleman: the veal shoulder with glazed spring vegetables ($28); for the lady: hand-rolled gnocchi with roasted root vegetables ($23). The servings appear delicate, but the meal was perfectly filling. My plate was elegantly arranged, the textures coupled with the flavor of the FRESH vegetables was absolutely superb (I've never tasted a potato that tasted so much like....a potato!). I eat each morsel piece by piece (teeeeeny tiny yellow carrots). Dessert: strawberry-rhubarb with shortbread crumbs ($8). I've never tasted rhubarb like this in my life; the dish was tart and sweet, light and with a slight crunch (the mint leaves were an excellent touch). As a birthday surprise, a 3-inch chocolate cake. I saved this until the next day, and was SO very pleased by the flavor and texture. Fans of fresh, local produce which is honored through preparation and presentation will adore this Rhode Island gem. It was a beautiful evening, a perfect evening. For the last couple of months I have held off on sharing my experience at Persimmon because I wanted to craft a review that would do Persimmon justice, but the fact is I cannot. My dinner at Persimmon on Aug. 5, 2014 was far and away the best meal I have ever had. The restaurant boasts an intimate interior, a gorgeous bar and fabulous wine list, and - most importantly - incredible food. Our party of four shared four unique appetizers, four unique entrees and two unique desserts. We passed our plates like a game of roulette, drooling over each and every bite. The presentation of each dish was artfully and thoughtfully prepared, and while the portions appeared small, each dish was incredibly rich, decadent and filling. I highly recommend the octopus, beef tartare and foie gras appetizers. For entrees, the duck breast was incredible as was the lamb three ways. My husband really enjoyed his lamb chop, too. The peanut butter dessert was phenomenal and we loved the crunch from the peanuts. We also enjoyed our 'safer' choices like the fluke, broccoli soup, and chocolate cake, but I think the more adventurous dishes are where Persimmon really shines. For those who are unfamiliar with Bristol or are unsure how to dress, Bristol is a very seasonal (summer) town and at most places you can get away with shorts or jeans, a tee and flip flops.Though Persimmon does not have a dress code (at least not one that I could find) I would suggest upscale/modern casual. For men, a jacket is not out of the question but is not necessarily required either. Both men in our parties opted for one with a nice crisp button-down shirt and khaki pants. For women, a nice dress with sandals or flats or blouse and pants would be fine. While I did wear them, I felt a bit overdressed in heels, and I typically wear them daily to work. When in doubt, I feel it's better to be overdressed. I can think of no better place than Persimmon to spend a fancy night out or to celebrate one of life's milestones. I think the reviews speak for themselves. We had the privilege to go to Persimmon last Friday. My brother in law took us out for our October birthdays. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant, which I'm never stoked about, but as the night went on, I forgot about it and enjoyed the great food, drinks and company. It took the waitress a few times to get our order, as we contemplated whether to share a few dishes or order our own. We decided on ordering a few dishes to share between the four of us (husband, brother and sister in law and myself). I always love this idea because you don't have to commit to one dish! So fun!! We started off with the bolognese, fried green tomato, seabass and the foie gras/duck neck confit. The bolognese was cooked to perfection and full of great flavors!! Luckily we got 2 orders and so we were each able to get a pretty good serving. Fried green tomatoes is one of those things that we've always wanted to try, but never had the opportunity and never went out of our way to find. The exterior was crisp while the inside was juicy. Although it is a fried dish, it was very light. I do not eat fish, but the seabass seemed to be very satisfying to the rest of our party. I tried foie gras for the first time. I felt adventurous! It was actually pretty delicious. The others who normally eat it thought it was amazing. I'm just a beginner so it took a lot of mental preparation and although it tasted good, I couldn't fully get over the idea of what it was, so I chugged some wine to get past it. Next we had the chicken wing, garganelli with pig head, and the veal. The chicken wing was butter smooth! Sadly it was one small wing and we ate it so quickly between the four of us that I doubt any of us were truly able to appreciate it! The garganelli was a big hit at our table. I failed to taste the actual pasta but I did try the pig head. I feel like "pig head" is a bit overly descriptive. It was pieces of pork meat. It was very flavorful. The veal was my main choice. Although it tasted good and was very tender, it wasn't my favorite dish. I was not thrilled about the Lima beans, but tried them anyways. Lastly, we had the two most coveted dishes. The pork belly and rib eye. The girls ordered our rib eye medium while the guys ordered theirs medium rare. Ours was of course the better of the two. The rib eye was so tender and full of flavor. The wine sauce was a nice addition which helped to compliment the rest of the dish. The pork belly was something we all looked forward to. We tend to eat a lot of pork and were pretty excited about this one. Luckily, it lives up to our expectations. While perfectly crisped on the outside, like the chicken wing and fried green tomato, the pork was also butter soft. It was an amazing combination. We ended with the vanilla ice cream and roasted cashews. It was a perfect light ending to our very heavy meal. Needless to say, we loved our experience at Persimmon. We loved that we were able to try so many dishes due to the small portions. We would highly recommend it. read more

Let me Preface as saying, I am in fact also (nowhere near Chef Champes finesse) professional Chef. That said, when i want to be utterly inspired and blown away with a 0% nonsense, friendly, and perfected and sexy food and service....I DINE HERE! Persimmon is a modern restaurant serving ingredient- and technique-driven American cuisine. Chef Champe Speidel combines his unyielding enthusiasm for the craft with a fierce commitment to sourcing the very best ingredients and products from near and afar. The menu changes a little each night to showcase Speidel's personal culinary vision -- and, of course, to keep things novel for his guests. Portion sizes are great, and I left there feeling satisfied. I read all the reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor and thought that I needed to experience this place. You can visit Blithewold by day (since you are already in Bristol) and enjoy a memorable meal at Persimmon at night (again in Bristol). The ride up from Newport is enjoyable with a nice scenic view. I have been going to Persimmon for quite some time. I usually go for dinner and occasionally hit their monthly brunch. I only have good things to say about the food as well as the staff. The wine list is extensive and the cocktails are innovative. The food is to die for. I have never left disappointed. They are one of the few restaurants in Providence that serve foie gras and it is absolutely delectable. I have heard people complain about the serving sizes and the price. I visited Persimmon yesterday. They have beautifully renovated the space and added a bar. The cocktail menu included about 4-5 signature drinks plus a bartender's choice, and the wine list had a nice selection of reds and whites. The menu did not currently have the 5 course tasting and they mentioned they are getting situated in their new space before adding those. We started with the green vegetable beignets. They were warm, deliciously fried, flavorful and accompanied by a bright aioli. We then moved on to the steak and the bolognese. The steak was well marbled and rich and the bolognese was the perfect size. We didn't have a reservation and grabbed seats at the bar. We've had Persimmon bookmarked "to try" on Yelp for a while, and we finally made it out there last night! It's a bit of a hike for us coming from the other side of the bay so we wanted to turn our visit into an event. With the reviews here celebrating almost everything on the menu, that's what we decided to try! Persimmon offers a "Grand Tasting" menu that let us sample some of the best they had to offer. Last night, the tasting was a 20 course epic that brought quail eggs, caviar, foie gras, and beef tartare among other more common fare. Each of the courses was a small bite served artistically and expertly paired with the wine tasting menu (as a quick aside, i always wonder how a small restaurant has room to store so many unique plates). And the service - wow! For a restaurant of only a dozen or so tables, there seemed to be an army of waitstaff. Each time a new course or a new wine tasting was brought to the table, the staff did a great job of describing exactly what we were about to try. The staff maintained a great pace to the tasting as well; we never felt like we were rushed, and were able to enjoy some great conversation over about two and a half hours of wonderful food that didn't leave us feeling overly full. I would highly recommend Persimmon to anyone living in or passing through the Ocean State. The wife and I will certainly be back, and we hope to try another night's version of the ever-changing grand tasting with some friends! read more

I have been putting off this review for a while because I really do not know what to write. We came here for restaurant week. I have heard so many raving reviews I was expecting this place to really knock my socks off. I was impressed with the presentation but something about this place did not take me to those orgasmic levels everyone was telling me about. The food is so beautifully plated. Literally the Chef makes art on your dinner plate. However the plates are very small. So if you come here make sure to get an app, dinner, and dessert or you will leave hungry. The food was all prepared perfectly. The fish has a crispy crust that was sublime. My beef was rocking my tastebuds. Some negatives were the rosemary chocolates they tasted way too strong. The service was ok. The hostess was welcoming. However I did get the vibe that the servers are used to a older clientele and as a younger person there for restaurant week we did not get treated the same way. Also when we were leaving we had to wait for our coats for a while. Overall good experience that I would suggest to anyone who wants a nice night out. read more

A thin sliced of what seemed like store bought babka lying flaccid on the plate with some tasteless icecream on top. Tasteless and ugly! The best thing of the night was the coconut milk ice cream. The texture was spot on. The wine list is extensive and laughably expensive. Why is that necessary? There are so many good affordable wines. There were 4 bottles of Pinot noir on the list. The least expensive at $75 and the most at $250. Why? Do they need me to suggest some moderately priced good Pinots, because there are many. Now to the service. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. Our meals were delivered at the same time. My biggest complaint was the serving and the clearing. Rather than walking around the table and placing my food in front of me, the waiter reached over and handed me my plate of food. When clearing, he leaned over my husband to clear something from me. Everyone in Providence knows or ought to know that chef can cook, and cook very very very well (YUM). But in Providence, we have a LOT of quality, a LOT of creativity, nearby J&W who supplies a steady stream of local cooking talent. Add those pluses to being in broke ass, corrupt but lovable City of Providence and its dysfunctional nature, the end result is that PVD has higher than average opportunity for hard working entrepreneurial chefs to take the financial risk of opening fun new and affordable restaurants to eat at so we don't ever need to head up to BLAHston for grub. So ya, if you're the person that wants a cook to tweeze the crap out of your food, there are many restaurants in PVD and Rhode Island in general that would be happy to tweeze your bite into submission. So what sets Persimmon apart? Service. BAR NONE Persimmon has got THE most professional service in Rhode Island. So many times servers will slightly roll their eyes or sigh when a client asks for a recommendation, and for good reason. If they recommend something a customer doesn't like, some jerk customers would take it out on the server in their tip even though it's the customer's fault for asking in the first place. Here, even if they mind (they don't or they're just too good w the hospitality poker face!), they'll do it and you WILL like it. It's good good good. My friend and I did the tasting menu as a treat and what a treat it was. Absolute perfection are the words that come to mind. I hadn't been to Persimmon yet but it has been on my "to try" list for a while. The decor is charming. The hostess was very friendly and our waiter was top notch. We started with some delicious beverages. I had (2) Ringwalds since I am an Aperol fan and they were very good. My friend had something like an old-fashioned and she also had 2. The amuse bouche or initial offerings were gorgeous and delicious. I can't recall what they were. One had squash (I took a pic) and the other may have been mushrooms and goat cheese in a ball. Very creamy and scrumptious. Each course presented as a stunningly beautiful plate that was a delight to eat. The beef, which I believe is also on the menu, was amazing. I want whatever the sauce was daily if possible. I also keep thinking about the dessert. I want more! A perfect meal & visit. Thank you very much to the chefs and the staff! read more

WOW. Blown away. Bigger than you think when approaching from outside. Very attentive wait staff. Awesome breads with sweet butter all before the small plates. There were 4 of us, so we chose to sample & share the some small plates to start. Starting with the radish plate, fabulous (and I am not doing it justice) reconfigured chicken wing & foie gras w duck confit.... spectacular!! We moved onto their homemade blackened spaghetti, NH porkloin, incredible, and the lamb loin which if we have a complaint that it was a little dry. We finished with the corn pasta pillows (agrillote?)and the black bass dish which again was spectacular, fish perfectly cooked. The wait staff was terrific. (Oringinally a 3-star review)*** A bit disappointed by the overall feel of this experience. Portions are as expected and food quality was too, but that was not our concern. What was uncomfortable was the fact that another Providence venue felt that a younger couple didn't deserve the attention given to elders. Sat immediately next to a table with two guests twice our age, it was evident that the venue had multiple hosts catering the table (3 people simultaneously at one point). Meanwhile, we waited excessively long throughout our meal for any type of service. We would have never expected this type of behavior here, as we have encountered it in two (2) other Providence venues, but those locations were long-established and obviously had a preference for their long-time patrons. While we would possibly consider a return to make up for this experience, with so many other wonderful Providence venues, we likely won't be returning to Persimmon for quite some time. -------------------------------------- ***Dropped down from 3 to 1 star when ownership accosted us for writing the above review.
