This was probably my husbands dream come true. He's a over-the-top meat lover. We found out about this restaurant because it was on the food network with their famous "bistec ala florentina" years ago.... so when we went to Europe for our honeymoon-- on our Florence stop. We just HAD to come to this amazing spot. My husband was in the clouds while consuming this massive 3 lb steak! (I personally respect that they don't change how they cook the steak, which is completely rare in the center and after tasting it, it wasn't something I loved) although, I did love my filet mignon and their potatoes. I'm usually skeptical when any concierge in Italy recommends a restaurant since they usually steer you to an overpriced tourist trap. But after having a few drinks of limocello with my hotel concierge, he let me in on a local secret, "PERSEUS"! You know this place is going to rock your inate carnivore when you walk in and find a butcher and hanging slabs of beef to greet you. We were promptly seated and told, not asked, but told to have a bottle of chianti and order the "bisteca florentine". Keep in mind, the waiter also "told" us, it only comes rare and if you want it any other way, please leave. Half way through our bottle of chianti, the sizzling plate of heaven arrived. It was a Fred Flinstone sized Brontosorus rib seered with sea salt and extra extra extra virgin olive oil. They basically passed the steak through a warm room and seered both sides for a second on each side. The first bite melted in my mouth. The rest can better be described as a scene from scooby doo when shaggy tosses a box of scooby snacks his way...pure madness. If your ever in Italy, make this one of your MUST HAVES. btw, if you get a chance, take a trip to nearby Guardastelle and visit the Sovestro winery in Poggio, ask the owner, Fausto, for his special chianti which would be the perfect pairing for this bite of heaven. read more

OK yes Perseus is a local institution and it is a very nice place with very, very nice people. But I'm here to voice an opinion regarding the Bistecca from the point of view of a NY'er who frequents Luger's, Wolfgang's and The Palm on a regular basis. The prime beef from these NY/US steakhouses have a little something called "marbling'. Very thin ribbons of fat that run throughout the meat. When cooked, this marbling melts down a little and seasons the meat. These NY places also do something called 'aging', typically a month or more, which breaks down the muscles and adds a flavor that I would describe as 'umami'. SO - now you have a bistecca in Florence that has Zero marbling (no, don't think of filet mignon because this is not very tender) and appears to be extremely 'fresh', with no ageing. I'm sorry - Perseus is not in the same universe as Peter Luger. Lastly, Bistecca a la Fiorentina (especially at Perseus) is ONLY cooked rare - now, I like my steak medium-rare to medium, but I get it so I went along with their little show. But if I didn't know the background and I wanted my steak at least warm in the middle I would have been pissed. Further, what little 'flavor' I did taste was salt and some exterior grill marks. Having said all this I understand that people have opinions, that's why they have menu's and horse races, and I enjoyed my night - except for these little black flies that were everywhere in Perseus which were bothering everybody. We made a reservation the morning of our dinner. When we arrived, we had about a 5 minute wait for our table. They were very busy. The atmosphere is somewhat loud but you can talk easily, can dress casually, and it is relaxed. The wait staff were helpful. The decor is interesting. My husband had their famous steak Florentine which he loved. I had the Pennette Carne e Chiante. It is pasta with meat sautéed in Chiante. It was absolutely incredible. It was the best pasta dish I have ever had in my life. The flavor was absolutely amazing. The other pasta dishes looked great. You can google the menu under "images". The best steak I've ever had!! Both my husband and I ordered the Filetto de Manzo. We had read up beforehand and knew that no matter how we ordered it would come out rare. Regardless it was delicious. Service was excellent and the recommendations did not disappoint. We opened with cheese covered in honey and fresh herbs over melon and some classic spaghettini. Both plates were licked clean. The potatoes are a good side dish to the meat but I wasn't a fan of the fried artichokes. Will definitely come back if ever in Florence! read more

So far from the touristy stuff that its refreshing. As soon as we sat they brought out a huge bouquet of celery, radishes, carrots, peppers, its was beautiful and i can't emphasize enough how HUGE it was. Beef tartare was prepared table side(as is tradition in these parts) and prepared masterfully and with great attention to detail. The pastas were good, not great, but good. I had a osso buco risotto which was very flavorful and served with the marrow. It was extremely rich and I'm fairly certain they used marrow in the cooking of the risotto which lead to a deeply rich and oily flavor. But this place is steak centric, as is evident by all the steak visible at the front door and . The Bistec Fiorentine was fabulous. We got the size for two but after eating pasta it fed 3. I love how they won't cook it any other way than rare as to not affect the flavor of the prized meat. The center was deep red and cool to the touch. The outside crust was well seasoned with salt and obtained a great smokiness from the insanely hot grill. It's all carved tabled side in a few short flicks of the server's expert wrist and instantly placed in the center of the table with the bone rising from the plate like a lone skyscraper. The place is decorated old world style and the bathrooms are adorned with tasteful antique nude pictures proving this place does't take itself too seriously. read more

Hands down, this is one of the best meats I have had. There have been some reviews comparing the steak to other shops and commentary on how rare it is. Firstly, if you don't like rare meat, you may not like it. Secondly, don't go to any good steakhouse to burn your meat as you are just wasting money. We were promptly seated - we had a reservation but it was not very crowded when we arrived. Our waiter was friendly and got us quickly started on the wine.after s short while a big plate of tender, juicy meat had arrived. We got to work on it and we were constantly checked on by the waiter to see if the steak and we were okay. We had the house wine and asked if we could just take the remains of the bottle with us. No problem there. If you like meat this is your place. If your expecting a steak from a chain "good steak house", it may not align with those expectations perfectly. The best meal we've had on our European trip so far. We got the steak florentine and a chicken dish. The chicken was very good but the steak was the best I've ever had. The tiramisu and panna cotta were heavenly! This was the first panna cotta that was drenched in chocolate. So amazing. They also gave us a sweet wine with dessert. The waiters were all very friendly and accommodating and I loved every minute I was there. You pay by how much wine you drink. We probably had a liter, water, the avocado and shrimp app (my husband liked but I thought was okay) steak florentine, chicken dish, 2 cafés, 2 desserts. The bill was 110 euro. I felt it was well priced. We had much more expensive meals in Paris but the food was not as good. read more

Perseus is an institution in Florence for its steaks, although it's now very popular and gets swamped by clients almost every night. Prices are "decent", service is very good, food is "ok", meaning that you can get far better quality in other places around Florence but not for this price. Holy meat Batman. Stayed with a friend in Florence and knew I had the try the infamous florentine steak. I had heard that Trattoria da Tito was THE place to go, and I thought it would be great because it was seriously a half a block from my friend's apartment. But my friend said "No, we must go to Perseus!" And so we went. Now I can't compare to da Tito, since I've never been, but this place was amazing. We had the florentine steak for three and it was huge. I felt like I was on the Flintstones. A huge chunk of red, rare meat, which I generally would shy away from (more of a medium person, myself), but it was amazing. For sides we had the roasted potatoes and white beans, which were a nice complement. Desserts were also delicious. I had the tiramisu and honestly I don't remember what my friends had, because I was heads down all in as I inhaled my dessert. The service was friendly, and I think the prices were a steal for all we got. If I ever make my way back to Florence I will absolutely go back to Perseus. read more

While spending time in Florence, i was apprehensive on trying the Florentine steak since it is cooled rare. Well, i tried a ribeye version and it was amazing. Trying to think of a time i had better steak and the only place i can think of that comes close is a Brazilian restaurant in Texas. Of you'rw worried about the size, don't be. Perseus was recommended to me by the owner of Pegna Gourmet market (since 1860) as the best steakhouse in Florence Italy. I've eaten dry aged, wet aged, corn fed, grass fed, Kobe beef, Piedmont, at many steakhouses in LA, Las Vegas, New York, Portland Oregon, Texas, Australia, Tokyo and other parts of the world and the Steak Florentine at Perseus ranks up with some of the best I've ever had. They sell the steak at a minimum 1200 grams which is a 2.645 lb. steak and prepare it only 1 way, rare to med. rare. The price was around 50 euros which is cheap for the amazing taste. We also had the roasted chicken with pepper and thyme which was amazing as well. And the sage and butter tagiolini with zucchini blossoms. Al dente and great! I wish we had more room to eat more or another day in Florence as we are off to Rome. Definitely coming back! Epic dinner. read more

Very emotional writing this now. The bald guy at the cash register is a huge stronzo (asshole). We got skipped twice during our wait, and we asked him what happen it's our turn.... and he yelled in my face in Italian that the patrons sitting inside and outside the restaurant turned around to watch this show. Embarrassing. Then two more couples went after that...and another waiter said " the wait is 1 hour" when 4 couples went before us in about 10 minutes. Poor poor service. Simply disgusted. Being a steak aficionado(self proclaimed at least) I had to try the famous Florentine Steak. Seeing how rare steaks are the only way I get my steak, this was a match made in heaven. Ordered the Bistecca Alla Fiorentina for two. The design of the restaurant was cool, almost like an old style Italian kitchen and the display of veggies on the table was a nice touch. When the steak came out, the cut was so big that the waiter sliced it up for us, stacked it and presented it in a nicely manner. The seasoning and tenderness were all very well done and I could tell by the flavors that the steak was prepared differently then the way I'm used to back home. I enjoyed it so much that I could've finished it all on my own. For desert, had the poached pear in red wine and it was great. All in all, florentine steak was legit and it truly lived up to the hype. Bold statement but this may have been the best steak that I've ever had! read more

I first heard about Perseus from Andrew Zimmern's program couple of years ago and have been since wanting to come to Florence and try it. I did have that opportunity today and my experience was far from positive. From the mozzarella and tomatoes salad which had generic tasting tomatoes to the steak which was impossible to chew. I am a big steak connoisseur having eaten in the world's finest steakhouses and expected nothing short of a magical experience. Instead, I had to look for another restaurant afterwards so my son could eat dinner. He couldn't tackle the chewiness of it despite having had ribeye steaks many times and loving it. I suppose I fell into another tourist trap and regret the waste of time and money very much. The most colorful part of the evening was seeing all the nude women photos in the men's room. Something had to compensate for the subpar steak dinner. I would definitely recommend looking for other options to experience the Bisteca alla Fiorentina. read more

My absolute favorite place for steak in Florence. Close to our house so that's a plus or minus depending on how you look at it..I've been here around 10 times and I get the filet or tagliata or roast chicken and they are all equally divine. Like breathtakingly delicious. Even though it's not a charcoal grill, they know how to make steak! I love the no-nonsense attitude of the staff and the fact that someone close to your table will always order a huge bistecca which is an event in itself: the ceremonious cutting table being wheeled out, the huge carving knife, the large bone in the middle. If you're all sharing, make sure someone orders the chicken because it's the best roast chicken I've ever tasted in Italy: flattened, seasoned with a beautiful cacophony of peppercorns and spices and mediterranean salt....the fried potatoes are delicious as a side dish as well, cut in flat rounds and dipped in boiling oil. Traditional Tuscan menu with the ridiculous "Fiorentina" sold by the kilo. It's basically huge t-bone cuts that are grilled to perfection. All the side dishes and chicken entrées were delicious as well. There were a lot of tourists, but I actually liked that there was no menu in English, almost every restaurant we went had English menus.
