Opened in 1980 by Ruggero Corsi, at the edge of Florence near Porta Romana, this tiny Trattoria is locally loved thanks to a focus on traditional Tuscan cuisine plus an extensive cellar of affordable Wines to match. Not an easy place to walk-in, the L-shaped footprint holding perhaps two dozen diners, guests instead confirm reservations made by phone before occupying wood seats, a pour of house Chianti soon to follow alongside three types of Bread in a basket. Wood-lined with white tablecloths, tables nearly touching, Trattoria Ruggero proposes a seasonal menu focused on history and season, a plate of Charcuterie plus chopped Liver Toast similar to others while a Salad of Chicories finds bitterness balanced by Anchovy Dressing. Predictably offering Tuscan T-Bones served bloody, a sizable cut for six at an adjacent table, those seeking something lighter should consider Tortellini served in clear Broth with depth or hand-cut Tagliatelle served simply amidst Aspargus and Butter. Tempted by another Steak, more affordable than most, it was on the recommendation of neighbors that spoon-tender Roast Pork instead arrived as Secondi with a side of Potatoes, the extra capacity saved for crumbly Cake and a caramelized Apple from the oven soaked in Syrup.

Wonderful tuscan style restaurant. Out of the way and not a tourist spot. Make a reservation as it is popular with the locals. We were a group of five and all ordered different food. I shared the bisteccca. It is meant for two people and is huge. We had a couple of sides and the potatoes with a little tomato sauce was the best! We also had a couple of orders of artichokes. They are in season and were yummy. The appetizer with pate is always a good choice. For desert the fruit tart is what they are known for. We enjoy this restaurant every time we come to Florence.

Our humble-looking lunch, BURSTING with flavor!

My boyfriend FINALLY took me to this small trattoria on via Romana after always raving about how good it is. We got seated right away in the back, a small Tuscan countryside-decorated room with paintings all over the walls. The inside is small and charming, with wooden tables and chairs and wood paneling. We started with a liver crostini, a half liter of red wine, and I got the involtino con carciofi, which was a divine meat dish wrapped around ham and artichoke. It came quickly, stewing in its own sauce and oils. So fragrant and tender! My boyfriend got a filet, cooked perfectly and tender beyond belief on the inside. We were happy to share with each other, and I tried the filet in the involtino's sauce - give it a go, it's fantastic! Both our dishes came with roasted/grilled rosemary potatoes, which were the perfect complement to the meat. A fantastic lunch for 40 euro!

The best casual meal we have had in Florence in a few trips. Worth the sometimes difficult reservation process. We can't wait to return!

This food felt very real and honest. One of the highlights of our trip to Tuscany. Definitely worth getting a reservation.

It's close enough to the lively, bustling part of Firenze to feel connected, yet just far enough to escape the city's never-ending wave of tourists. The service was incredible, and the owner (I'm pretty sure it was the owner?) brought so much energy that he single-handedly turned the whole place into an eclectic little spot during the "rush hour" of the evening. The menu was solid, if a bit "generic" at times. While everything we ordered was delicious, nothing at Trattoria Giovanni felt like a dish you couldn't find elsewhere... and honestly, that's perfectly fine! It was traditional, comforting, and exactly what we were craving. The plate of cured meats and cheese was phenomenal, a great start to the meal. The pastas were really good as well, though one of the meat dishes had a slightly off texture, with the chunks of meat a bit overcooked. All in all, we loved our meal and would definitely recommend this spot if you're in Florence.

Osteria del Cinghiale quickly popped up on my radar, so I asked the concierge at our hotel to make us a reservation. It's clearly a very popular spot--when we arrived, there was already a line up at the door. The Mr. had the sirloin strip steak with roasted potatoes. I had the beef filet with Chianti sauce as well as roasted potatoes. Our steaks were cooked to a perfect medium rare and the potatoes were so satisfying. We shared an order of grilled vegetables and had a carafe of the house red which we enjoyed. In fact, we loved everything about our experience. The food, the vibe, the service was all amazing! For dessert, we shared the tiramisu and the strawberries with mascarpone cream. The tiramisu was the best we've ever tasted anywhere. In our two week's stay in Italy, this was one of our favorite meals of the trip! To avoid disappointment, please make a reservation.

It didn't start getting super busy until ~9pm - which is the usual Italian dining hour. We had the: *Prosciutto del Casentino - Le Selve di Vallolmo (Specialty Tuscan Ham of Free Range Grey Pork of Casentino, Tuscany (Slow Food Awarded Ingredients)) - MOVE OVER IBERICO. This was incredible - just melt in your mouth. You have to get this! *Ravioli di Peposo di Manzo al Burro e Timo (Ravioli Stuffed with Stewed Peppered Beef and Tossed in Butter and Thyme) - Peposo is a classic Tuscan dish that's usually tough cuts of meat cooked down in Chianti wine. Loved this 'twist' on a classic dish. They also so kindly split this portion for us which was perfect. The Peposo was perfection; if they just had Peposo as a dish, I'd order it! *Bistecca dell'Osteria (House Specialty Bone In Steak) - the star of the show!! While this isn't Chianni cattle or anything, this was fantastic piece of steak. Perfectly executed at medium rare. Love that the menu states "If you prefer your meat more so well done we would be happy to recommend another dish to you." Ha. Make sure you order a BOTTLE of wine! They have GREAT local options at super reasonable price points.

Restaurant is nice with maybe 6-7 tables inside but service was quite slow. We made reservations in advance but a few others were lucky to walk in and get a seat. The bistecca looked amazing and large portion size from what I saw at other tables but didnt get to try that this time around.

From the moment we sat down, our server (Chaime) treated us with disdain. While the food itself was overly salty, the service was far worse: * Ignored for simple requests: We asked for water immediately upon being seated and followed up three times throughout the night. Despite ordering heavily--a steak, pasta, omelet, and salad (while surrounding tables shared a single dish)--we never received water during our dinner. We had to eat our entire meal with nothing to drink. * Clear bias: Tables seated long after us were given water immediately upon seating and had their orders taken well before us. * Neglect until the check: Water was only brought alongside the check, and even then, we had to ask separately for cups. When I calmly asked Chaime why our water took so long, especially given that a nearby table seated as we finished was served water right away, she told me to speak with the manager. However, when I attempted to explain the situation to her, Chaime immediately cut me off and began yelling at me. I never raised my voice once. Yet, as she was yelling, she taunted me, asking, "What tone? You gonna cry? Huh?" To be treated with such hostility and malice simply for asking about basic service is completely unacceptable. Management needs to address this server's hostile behavior immediately. Save your money and go somewhere where guests are treated with basic respect.
