Food: Best peposo I've had in Tuscany! Their peposo is the most flavorful and rich I've tried. It's definitely a must get! The first time I tried their pici pasta, I was blown away. The pasta was perfectly al dente and the sauce was simple yet so flavorful. I'm not a huge pasta person, but this was one I would go back to. However, the second time I ordered it it needed more salt, but it was still cooked perfectly. Their veggie sides were also delicious. Service: Sometimes it can be slow and not that attentive but most of the time staff is very friendly. Atmosphere: Spacious indoor seating suitable for larger parties. I loved my lunch here! This is a tradition family run Italian restaurant with affordable and absolutely delicious food. They are open for lunch and do not take reservations. We waited for about 10-15 minutes before we were seated arriving at about 12:30. We both loved the pasta dishes of ravioli and their mushroom tortellini. Then we shared the osso bucco which was so tender and perfectly cooked. For drinks we enjoyed the house wine. The service was reasonably quick, they only offer indoor seating which was very comfortable. Everything you could want and more in a single dining experience. Simple dishes packed with an insane amount of flavor. By far, this was my favorite meal in Florence!! It was also the one I was lost looking forward to and it did not disappoint. I recommend trying the Beef stewed in Red Wine and Pepper as you can taste each ingredient so distinctly. The beef is really tender and juicy. Your fork will cut right through it. My wife and I chose to sample several dishes so that we could cover a lot of the menu. We went around 2pm after checking out duomo and it wasn't too crowded thankfully. We got seated after waiting for them to set the table up and ordered very quickly. Our server was really sweet and patient with my food allergies and we were able to figure out what to order with her help (she got out her phone to help translate certain terms). It's very home style Italian cooking and honestly felt like I was eating food made with love and care. The tomato pasta was perfectly tart and savory. The pasta Al ragu di chianina was the highlight of the meal. It was sooo meaty and tasted so creamy and rich. Everything is cooked Al dente. We got the grilled veal steak which was crazy juiciest and tender-- not a lot of seasoning other than the char and lemon slice on the side. Let me just give you a great combination of words: Gnocchi , ragu, locals, cheap, hand written menu. That's it in a nutshell. One of those places with few stools and a butt always in every one of them. It isn't fancy, they know the regulars, and they have a few pictures of some Italian superstars on the wall that have graced their presence. Walk in and look what's on somebody's plate. If it looks good, point and order. Everyone (that I could understand) was raving about what they were eating. Wild boar, rabbit, Gnocchi, and some sliced steak. No spaghetti, no pizza, no ice, and no takeout. Just good, home cooked food. Be prepared to make some friends. The place is small and you will be rubbing elbows with some folks. Eating well in Florence if you do not know the city is like winning a lottery. Most of the restaurants in the centre are tourist traps that sell terrible food. A friend of mine who is from Florence took me to this trattoria and I was very happy (note: a trattoria is a simpler, unpretentious version of a restaurant and it normally serves home-style, traditional food). We had the traditional pappa al pomodoro (a warm mash of rehydrated stale bread, tomatoes, basil, I know sounds weird but it's delicious), octopus linguine, sautéed zucchini, and my friend got some of the famous Florence style steak. This was the best meal I had while in Italy overall. I dream of the fagiolo all'olio (white beans in olive oil) and Peposo (pepper beef stew). The dishes were so simple, but had such depth. I've never even been a fan of white beans before this place, but they've converted me. It's definitely best to get here as soon as they open. Went here for lunch today! I've been here before but usually the line is out the door. Today, still a little wait but was able to score a table reasonably fast! Authentic Tuscan style cooking taking place here! Prices are extremely reasonably for lunch. Husband had the risotto. I kept reaching over to steal a little of that extremely well made risotto. The texture was there for me and so was the flavor. The lady next to me had a veal chop that looked scrumptious. I ordered the pulpo with potatoes. This is a cheap and cheerful authentic little Trattoria, frequented by lots of Italians and some tourists in search of something different from the many touristy places around. There was one antipasto (cold cuts), about 6 to 8 Primi and a similar number of Secondi. The only dessert option is the traditional Vin Santo with Cantucci - and why not!! The food is simple but delicious, the service friendly and efficient, and the house wine what it should be, simple but tasty. We swung by Trattoria Gozzi to eat lunch on our last day in town, as it's very centrally located (just a minute or two from Duomo). As we were there right when it opened, we ended up being one of the first parties seated. With a homey decor and a small bar up front, it is a very authentic experience. The menu was easy enough for us to figure out, and our food (along with a small glass of red wine) came out quite quickly after our order was in. In all, we were probably out in around 45 minutes - a nice, quick lunch given how many places we wanted to go see! The food itself is pretty cheap, simple, but absolutely delicious. The only part of the meal that I probably would have done differently was not get a pasta dish with lampredotto...having seen it around town a few times, I decided to give it a shot. The texture was a bit interesting (probably the best way to put it), and it wasn't as flavorful as the sauce it was in. The penne, of course, was cooked to perfection, but that was really the only hiccup. My wife got a spaghetti-like pasta (I forget the exact name) that came with a quail ragu...what an excellent choice! It was extremely flavorful, and with the texture of the pasta, it was just magic. We got the tomato soup with stale bread - an interesting kind of dish (there is undoubtedly a story behind it that I have forgotten) that isn't as rich in flavor but is certainly filling. The last item we had were the 'meatballs' - and they are different from what you might traditionally envision as meatballs. Lightly fried and mixed in with a little potato, they are more akin (IMO) to croquettes, but they were extremely juicy and full of moist, shredded meat. There is so much excellent food in town, but if you do have the time to stop by for lunch (they are only open for lunch - no dinner), I would definitely add it to the list. Promptly seated at a communal table, we order a mezzo litro of house wine while we scanned the hand written menu. I ordered the pappardella al cinghiale - wild boar ragu, but it was my husband's Peposo with potatoes that absolutely stole the show. Incredible, rich and hearty Tuscan food. The dishes that require slow cooking are served nearly immediately because they have been simmering in the back for hours. i am forever grateful to the friend who introduced me to this family owned restaurant. i go there every single week, sometimes twice. the food is soooo delicious. it is fresh and made with great ingredients and tastes really cooked after old recipies. they have some local specialities which they have perfected. the atmoshpere is very unique, that of a typical trattoria. its uncomplicated: nice tables with grey marble tops, high ceilings, art and big mirrors on the walls, two rooms side by side. the place is always full, best to call by 10 and make a reservation if you don't want to wait. it is incredibly inexpensive for how good the food is. and they have beautiful starched napkins which i find extraordinary since it is so inexpensive, but it adds a classy touch and means they care. sergio gozzi is a 2 minute walk from the duomo in the heart of florence and i truly cant wait till i return. read more
