Great service from check in thru dinner. We were 10min early (reservation at 19:00). Waiter was nice and friendly. The food was excellent and their house red was great. We chose to dine in their covered patio which was brighter. Very nice ambiance.

WOW dinner here was amazing!!! You must make a reservation to eat here they will be booked up if you try to walk in! We were able to reserve the day prior. Walking in, this restaurant is definitely unique. Each wall is filled with unique decorative items and it feels like you are in a well established place. They are known here for the Florentine Steaks, which is primarily the reason we wanted to come here. When in Florence, trying the Florentine steak is a must! They have 2 options for the steak and opted for the filet cut. Both are big enough for 2 people as they're basically 46oz portions. We did the side of vegetables and potatoes. The bring the raw cut of steak out to you at the table to show you the cut and weight before cooking. Once being cooked, it came out quickly!! Their recommendation of temperature is medium rare, which we opted for. Service was nice, they bring out a hot plate before the steak comes and assist you in dressing the first piece. The steak is pre-sliced and the server will serve the first piece, put some olive oil and black salt on it before letting you dine. That was cool to see!! The salt and olive oil taste so good on there. Between the 2 of us we left just a little steak behind and were able to eat mostly everything. The oven roasted potatoes were so tender and well seasoned. Great side choice. The vegetables were not cooked fully and were hard but that's ok, we still ate them and everything else was amazing. On the way out we were stopped by someone who appeared to be the owner who asked us how the meal was. He stated he had a gift for us and gave us a bottle of the house wine which is made specially for the restaurant. How cool!!! I couldn't thank him enough what a great dining experience! Highly recommend Vecchio Cancello especially if you want to try Florence's signature steak!

Free bottle of house wine. A gift from the owner!

During our first night in Florence my wife and I stumbled across this restaurant and man ole man, it was an experience. Firstly, the ambiance of the space is such a vibe! (A great feeling). It almost made you feel like you were walking into someone's home so it definitely made us feel welcome. We decided to sit in their garden area and was quickly greeted by our waiter. After reviewing the menu and asking a few questions, we decided on ordering a glass of their house wine and some Ravioli dishes. I ordered the Tortello dell' Appennino - stuffed ravioli with duck meat sauce and my wife ordered the Mezzelune - ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach with fresh truffle and toasted almonds. Smh ugh both dishes tasted amazing! And they were the perfect portion size so we weren't super hungry or bloated afterwards. While we waited for the check, the waiter offered us some shots of lemoncello (alcoholic) and they had a nice kick to them! And just when we taught the experience couldn't get any better, the owner greeted us on the way out and gave us a free bottle of their house wine as a gift for dining with them! Trust me, if you're looking for a restaurant to try out, look no further, this is it! Also - random things to keep in mind: - call to make a reservation before going if you can. We caught them on a slow night (Wednesday around 8pm) so we were able to walk in. But don't chance it cause it can get busy quick! - we aren't big red meat eaters but this spot is also know for their steaks. The group next to us ordered a streak the size of my head, no lie! They even big it out and weigh it in front of you so you can know how much it is. It's definitely an experience to try if you enjoy steaks. And the smell smh amazing!

First meal in Florence! Thank goodness we made a reservation beforehand because it got pretty packed for lunch. We arrived right when it opened so we were one of the first people to get seated. Everything was so yummy and cooked to perfection. We got the steak and pappardelle. The restaurant atmosphere was lovely and cozy. And the staff were super friendly. Loved that they brought out a scale to weigh the steak out in front of you. Definitely would love to try this restaurant again if I'm ever back in the city!

4.5/5 - Made a rez well ahead of time, got there and service was practiced and on point. A little fast for Italy... but everybody spoke english and this place knows its rankings and is catering to tourists. Pasta and wine were legit and the steak was some of the best I've had in recent memory... rare, thick, juicy, and left the bone so I could get all the meat off. Awesome steak, I'd go back- even gave us a bottle of wine as we were leaving

The food here is delicious and the staff is so friendly. Inside feels open and intimate at the same time. It is a top rated restaurant on TripAdvisor and all of Florence, making it a little harder to snag a seat. I would definitely recommend making a reservation beforehand. There were a mix of tourists and locals. The pasta tastes fresh and is seasoned very well. They also offer a basket of free bread. I can see why this place is highly rated! The pasta is well priced for decent portions that leave you there feeling full.

The best restaurant we went to in italy, and the best food we had so far. The cured meats and cheeseboard came with truffle honey and fig jam, and the crositinis were simply divine! The risotto with pumpkin and cod was one of the best risottos I had, the the fillet meat came with two special salts (volcanic and lava) and both went so well with the meat. The cheesecake was very soft and light, and the perfect finish to the meal. The servers were exceptional and described every plate in detail for us. Would come here again in a heartbeat.

Great hospitality, impeccable service, warm atmosphere, and delicious fresh food. We ate the burata & tomatoes appetizer, mezzeluna truffle ravioli, osso buco & tiramisu. Nicola our server was fantastic, the wine was fantastic and they even offered us some homemade limoncello and a bottle of wine as a gift. They were so kind and generous and said it was an honor to be a part of our memory- adorable.

Decent non-touristy spot in downtown Florence. Super hot night and this place was a bit of a refuge. A bit dark, but really nice meal and great service. Had the crostini which was nice and tried the cod with chickpeas. Fish was great as was the tomato sauce, but the chickpeas were sort of a weird add-on. My wife had the ravioli with trout. So good. Nice, if unremarkable spot with solid service and food. Good choice and we definitely enjoyed.

    Sliced beef with mushrooms

One of our best meals in Italy, only wish we had made reservations to go back on our final night instead of thinking we had to try other places. We wanted to buy a bottle of the house wine to drink at our hotel and we were given a bottle as a gift. Amazing food and hospitality!

    Lo spaghetto (pomodoro)
    Molly F.

The best spaghetti pomodoro I had in Florence (called "Lo Spaghetto" on the menu). It had the freshest-ever tomato sauce made with in-season cherry tomatoes, just bursting with flavor and a subtle natural sweetness. Also had a mixed salad with insanely flavorful and juicy melon and a really tasty reduced balsamic (ordered without the cheese). Both perfect, so satisfying vegan options. Tucked away spot with mostly locals. Excellent service and cheap wine.

    Cantuccini with Vin Santo

Why this needs five stars: 1. Service was friendly and welcoming. Upon entering, I felt like I was with friends. 2. Service was passionate about what they were serving, so that I could understand and appreciate it even more myself. 3. Service was generous, eager to give a sample on anything I was curious about 4. Delicious dishes that are a perfect example to how good authentic Tuscan food can be 5. Great arrangement of the dishes by the chef, with attention to detail. 6. Great wines - all local, distinctive, and inspiring 7. Home made Prosecco, Cantuccini, Vin Santo, and limoncello

    The caprese was mediocre.

We ordered the 2.6 lb dry aged Florentine steak and gnocchi. The Florentine steak is a must try steak here. It was very juicy, tender, and it was bursting with flavor. The meat was nice and chewy. The steak was gigantic and it is bigger than my head. They first bring out the raw steak and weight it in front of you. The steak is enough to share for three people. The gnocchi was also very delicious. It was cheesy and rich. It was also in a way creamy and the cheese just melted in your mouth. One of the best things I've ever put in my mouth and eaten. The cheesecake is very famous in this restaurant. We tried it and understand why. The cheesecake was super creamy and soft. I had a great time and experience here. Definitely will be back sometime soon hopefully. This is a place I highly recommend to everyone. Come and try it out for yourselves.

He was awesome and had us laughing the entire night. We peppered him with a lot of questions about the menu, he answered everything and also accommodated my father-in-law, who is GF. He had his own GF bread basket and was able to order almost anything on the menu. We ordered a nice bottle of Montepulciano red for the table that was $48. Others had the Hugo spritz. For app I had the anchovies with roasted red pepper, sea salt and oil over grilled crostini, very good. I skipped first course and ordered the ribeye steak for my main course. Bone in, medium rare, sprinkled with sea salt and a side of onion marmalade. The steak was very good and had way less fat than I expected. The waiter suggested a huge steak for the table, but I was the only one ordering steak that night. Maybe next time. Others ordered the fillet and it was cooked perfectly, the angels and demons gnocchi, and the veal scallopini. Everybody was pleased Really cool spot with a very good wine selection, drinks, excellent food and a fun atmosphere that you don't find at many places. Nugo was an A+ server.

The atmosphere alone is worth a visit, but the food is what truly makes it exceptional. We ordered the ravioli, pappardelle with wild boar ragù, the Florentine steak, a mixed salad, affogato, and fresh strawberries with mascarpone cream. To drink, we shared a small carafe of red wine and a Pinot Grigio. Everything was spectacular. The Florentine steak was easily the best--and largest--I have ever had. Perfectly cooked, incredibly flavorful, and remarkably tender, it was the highlight of an already outstanding meal. The pappardelle with boar ragù was rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying, while the ravioli was beautifully prepared and full of flavor. Every dish felt authentic, carefully executed, and memorable. The wine was another pleasant surprise. Both selections were excellent and very reasonably priced, making the meal feel like an even better value. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and incredibly helpful. He patiently answered questions, explained the menu, and guided us toward some fantastic choices. Although we thought we were too full for dessert, we're very glad we changed our minds. The affogato was fantastic, and the strawberries with mascarpone cream were absolutely delicious. One of the highlights of the evening was watching our four-year-old happily clutching two spoons and enthusiastically scooping fresh strawberries and mascarpone into his mouth. It was one of those memorable family travel moments that you don't forget. A terrific meal, a unique historic setting, excellent service, and a wonderful atmosphere. This was one of our favorite dining experiences in Florence, and I highly recommend it.

I wanted to get the earliest reservation possible, so the restaurant reserved me for 7:30pm, which was when they open. I was advised to show up on time - even a 2 minute delay would make me miss my reservation. I can see why Trattoria Mario was strict on reservations. They open on the dot, and then a staff member calls out each reservation at 7:30pm like a roll call. Seemed to me that if you don't have a reservation then you're out of luck, because there was no waitlist and the restaurant small and space was limited. Service was great. Our waitress was highly attentive and got us in/out of the restaurant quickly, which was what we were going for. Food came out in a timely manner. We ordered the penne al ragu, salad misto, and a Florentine steak to share. The penne was perfectly al dente, and I liked the meat sauce. I did find the pasta sauce salty, but it could've came from the grated parmesan. The saltiness was not a fluke. The Florentine steak was just pure beef and a ton of salt... too much salt for my liking. I also decided that I'm not a fan of Florentine steak in general.

The Octopus was beautifully prepared and presented, but didn't have much flavor. They nailed the Espresso Martini! One of the best I've ever had! We ordered the huge Florentine steak to share between 4 of us and it was more than enough. Ultimately what knocked this review down to 3 stars and what was really disappointing was how they targeted us as tourists with the note at the bottom of the bill (see picture). It read "GRATUITY NOT INCLUDED" in all CAPITAL LETTERS. Also note it was the only thing in English on the entire bill. If it had been our first meal in Florence we might have fallen for this tactic, however it was our last. There's definitely some hostility towards tourists in Florence. Don't get me wrong, some of the people and restaurants we've visited have been very welcoming and friendly. However we recently saw tourist taxes go up significantly, and then you see tricks like this on the bill at La Giostra. This was the ONLY restaurant in Florence where we encountered this. Once jet fuel prices make flying a relic of the past I would argue that some Europeans who depend on tourists for their livelihood may not miss our presence but will certainly miss our spending.
