This makes a big big impression unfortunately our Latino community will always tolerate not being treated respectfully, while I was here waiting customers where courteous and this lady was still rude and looks like she hates her job. Won't ever go back to this place. Paid almost $50 for menudo but was mostly juice. Lady's that work there were mad for no reason and roaches walking around on the floor and to top it off they were gonna let us walk out without getting the limes and onions they were supposed to add. there bread is o.k it's not the best. I have tried their burritos; asada, carnita. they are not good, too salty and they don't ask you if you want the Hot salsa on you food they just slap it on. So we were on the hunt for a good local maker of masa for this year's tamales. Traditionally we've just trekked back to East L.A. But this year I was focused on once and for all finding a good local place in Riverside... Enter Pepe's Panaderia. This is a very humble hole-in-the-wall type bakery. Their primary focus is pan dulces and they excel at those quite well. This to me was a sign that they likely had excellent masa as baking and masa preparation are similar arts. Our first step was to sample some tamales first to get a taste of what their masa is capable of. Pepe's does not typically keep tamales ready. You have to order them a day ahead. We ordered a dozen and came back the next day... Man oh man... The line was out the door!! Mainly people buying pan dulces. When I got home and unpacked the tamales it was like the scene from Ratatouille. Instantly transported back to my childhood! These tamales were not your typical carneceria tamales perfectly shaped like little burritos... These were the tamales like your abuelita made. Some fat, some short, some with too much masa, some with too little. The kind with perfect little slivers of masa stuck within the folds of the corn husks tenderly wrapped around the tamale. But the taste. The taste was DELICIOUS! Remember, our primary mission was to find good masa. Anyone can spend all day making "perfectly shaped" tamales with a good balance of meat etc... The point of this research was to find good masa and the masa from these tamales was EXCELLENT! In short, we found our place. Although Pepe's is primarily known for being a panaderia they make great tamales and sell EXCELLENT masa (in bulk). HIGHLY RECOMMEND. read more

The only thing I don't like about this place is that it's in Riverside and I live in Los Angeles. There are no gimmicks or efforts at branding, which is pretty ubiquitous in LA, because they are not needed. The quality speaks for itself, and I would go so far as saying that you will not find better pastries of any kind in even the most esteemed bakeries in Beverly Hills. The best pastries are the cream cheese and strawberry ones, but they tend to run out pretty quickly. Everything else is also delicious. It's also so cheap that it's practically free. read more

Always looking for good Mexican bread and it's so hard to find in my area. I yelped Mexican bread and found this place. I drove almost a 1/2hr to try. Very clean place, that made me happy. We went on a Sunday mid afternoon, there was plenty of bread to choose from and it was still soft and fresh. It tasted good, I was happy to know I have a place now to satisfy my craving. Bread is delicious here, the only downside is you have to wait till about 9:30 for the fresh bread to come out, they don't open till 7:00 am so if you get up early and want fresh bread for breakfast go somewhere else these people only cater to the late birds, also the lady at the counter is rude and seems to always be spaced out. read more

This place is a must try! My whole family always insists on several visits while we are in town and we often pack a box of bread to take back with us. The bread here is always warm, fresh, and delicious. Plus the smell walking into the bakery is divine. My favorite breads are the buttery, melt-in-your-mouth croissants and anything with a creamy custard center. I admit I never stop to ask what the names of the breads are, I just grab a tray and try not to go too crazy!! If you come on the weekends they also serve breakfast burritos.
