Came here on a Saturday afternoon with a friend. Haven't been here in years since I was a student at UCR. Came back after ~9 years and they're definitely still just as good. Prices are still affordable too - college student friendly prices. Location is unbeatable - right in University Village (and parking is free now, don't need validation), walking distance from UCR, and right next to the University Ave freeway entrance/exit. We both each got a Cheesecake Slice, Matcha for me & Blueberry for him, and we cut them in half to share. Both were really good! Great value - I think they were only $3.75 each slice! Service was good. Ambiance - it's small and tight so there's nowhere to sit. My friend and I went over to Qamaria to find a table to sit down at instead. Located at Iowa and University right by the 7-Eleven. There is plenty of parking available. Don't be fooled by the attendant box; parking is completely free! The shop is small with no seating, but it feels like a mini 85°C Bakery because of all the individually wrapped Asian breads. They have a good selection of affordable goodies, ranging from dinner rolls and muffins to fresh lunch sandwiches. Their ready-to-buy cakes look delicious, and they also serve coffee and tea. I tried the 'Curry Bun', and it was incredible. The bread was so fluffy and perfectly satisfying. I also enjoy their 'Hot Dog Egg Bun'. I've been to Uncle Chuang's many times and it's consistently delicious! One of my favorite things about this bakery is their minimal, clean, ingredients. If you look on the back of almost any item, you will see 4-6 basic ingredients with no weird preservatives or chemical aftertaste. This is exceptional! Went again recently and purchased an assortment for my family. For myself, I bought the Matcha cake and Taro cake. Everyone really enjoyed their desserts. I also purchased a loaf of Taro toast. It is pre-sliced and has a lovely layer of Taro swirled in. I've made a delicious grilled cheese, and even though the Taro swirl is sweet, I enjoy a sweet and salty combo. They have a few different flavors of the "toast" to choose from. You will also be offered a free drink (coffee, hot tea or iced tea-sweetened) with a purchase (I believe it's $12 minimum). I used to come here often when I first moved to Riverside, but Uncle Chuang's isn't as good as it used to be. Their loyalty program used to be a lot better pre-pandemic, and there are fewer items in the refrigerated section now; I remember there used to be more vegetarian/vegan friendly options, and I'm guessing they didn't sell as well because they're not there anymore. It's not bad to swing by every now and then, especially if you live in the area, but there are a lot of better options in IE: 85, Paris Baguette, Little Swan, etc. read more

Saw this place on Instagram. Wanted to check it out walked in five minutes before they close and they didn't even greet me. They just said we close in five minutes. Kind of felt rushed and couldn't really take my time to see what I really wanted. I really love the red bean buns here but they're always out when I come to buy them I also used to like getting the spam musubi but they added some ingredient (pork floss?) and I don't like it, so I don't get that anymore. I bought a beautiful sponge cake with strawberries covered with whipped cream. It has a custard and strawberry filling. It was sublime. I also got some fruit tarts. Everything was a work of art. I also liked that the baked goods and whipped cream are not too sweet, allowing the fruit to shine through and intertwine the flavors. I can't wait to go back and try something different. First time here, previous experience was at their Pomona location. They appeared to have improved their recipes because the breads here taste much better than Pomona which were dry and undesirable. We spent over $12 and thought we'd qualify for the free drink as advertised. Your choices are iced or hot tea (tea bag + hot water), which isn't that enticing. However, it was a hot day, an iced tea would have been nice. When we walked in there were 2 customers ahead of us. The first one declined the free drink since she already had one. The second customer wanted the promo drink. By the time we paid the cashier said they just ran out of ice tea and didn't offer a substitute. After I asked for the alternative she said hot tea. It was almost 100 degrees as it often is in Riverside. WHY would you run out of ice tea and think hot tea is a good idea? Nonetheless, I had to ask for it as she made no effort (didn't even ask) to give us a drink. Next time we will just buy a couple items or none at all. It's off-putting when merchants don't honor promos or appear insincere; it's a matter of principle, otherwise don't offer the promo. Taste wise the almond puff pastry was surprisingly good. Very fluffy and not overly sweet. We also bought red bean loaf, taro bun, and coconut raisin. All of their breads are made with butter so definitely NOT vegan, but the ingredients are labeled so it's easy to tell if it's vegetarian. read more

There are trays at the entrance, so you just take one, pile on your selections, and take them to the counter to check out. No restroom. Parking is easy since they are located in the University Village shopping plaza. It is a ticketed lot, but you can get a few hours free with validation. It can feel crowded when they're busy because it's a small shop, but the noise level stays relatively mild. They have a good variety of refrigerated and non-refrigerated options, as well as both sweet and savory items. There are some limited drink options as well. The cold sandwiches and pork sung spam musubi are so good! Get there early if you want to try them because they do sell out frequently. I also highly recommend the fruit sponge cakes and honey cakes.
