I went to Pelons last night. Walked in and waited to be seated. The host was really nice. She asked if I wanted indoor or outdoor seating. I chose outdoor. The patio was really neat with a huge tree covered in lights. The waiter was good. He came by the table quickly and took my order. I ordered a drink called pinche fresca. It was a sweet drink which I prefer. The nachos were really good. They were served on large tortilla chips and included guacamole, sour cream, jalapenos, and a choice of meat. The Spiced Chicken Enchiladas were delicious. They come with chicken, tomatillo spread and melted cheese. These enchiladas are overloaded with cheese. They were very flavorful and tasty. The rice and beans were good as well. Overall was a great experience if you are looking for a tex mex restaurant with cool outdoor seating. read more

What a cute little hidden gem. I love popping into places that aren't blasted all over Instagram, that turn out to be great and a complete surprise. And even better is that this tex mex joint is in downtown. They have a really good happy hour menu, which I included the photo here. And the service is perfect. Our server was very nice and accommodating. The interior is smaller with a more basement feeling but they also have an outdoor patio. The location is perfect to grab a bite before seeing a concert at Moody Amphitheater. It's in walking distance! And the food was very flavorful and tasty. Pelons is a multi level venue on lively 6th Street . I am happy we made a reservation for 8 because the upper patio filled up. Margaritas were our drink of choice one classic and one flight with four different flavors. For food options we added guacamole to the complementary chips and salsa. I love salty crispy house made chips and fresh salsa. My entree was 2 large beef enchiladas with a side or rice and black beans. My cousin remarked her pastor tacos and pork pinto beans were very flavorful. The only improvement to the meal would have been hotter food , temperature wise. WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Horrible food, horrible staff , horrible service! Ambience was dirty - very unhygienic! After seating us , it took them 25 minutes to take our order. We ordered vegetarian food but the first nachos that they brought to the table had beef in it. It took them an additional 15 minutes to bring out rest of the order. It looks kind of like a Mexican dive as you walk in, but it gets better. The staff is friendly and attentive, the menu is expensive and the food is mostly wonderful. Not your typical Mexican restaurant, they don't slide out the chips and salsa for you to fill up on before your meal comes. That's kind of refreshing! Came here for some late night grub after the UT football game. It was suggested by a friend in our group, so we stopped in for drinks and I ended up ordering food. Overall, I will honestly say I never would have known about this place if it wasn't for spontaneous wandering around downtown, and I don't think it's anything special worth going out of your way for. However, the service was great despite the food being mediocre, and the area is a cute and somewhat cozy spot late at night. The indoor restaurant is quaint. It has a bar and a handful of tables and seems intimate. Their patio is also nice, and they have a unique treehouse style patio with rooftop seating and are connected to the next door bar (Bar 508). The food was severely overpriced in my opinion, but I understand it's 1) TexMex in Austin (what do you expect), and 2) Downtown in a convenient spot for late night drop-ins, such as myself. I went simple and ordered cheese enchiladas. They were alright. Loaded with shredded cheese and tasty, if not slightly over-baked. None the less, I would say overall, the food was decent, it was quite pricey for Mexican food though I'd say ($14-15/plate). I didn't even get anything to drink, and it came to about $20. Definitely wasn't worth that. I ordered the spicy shrimp tacos. They were good, lacked flavor, but I added some salsa to it and it made it better. The salsa is nice and spicy. The street corn side was really delicious as well, that spicy aioli that they put on it was delicious. We decided to choose Pelóns To try some margaritas and get some food before hitting a few bars. The place was busy because it was Cinco De Mayo, but the service was still very attentive and I felt as though we never had to wait to get anything. Our food and drinks came out quickly and everything tasted great. The back room of Pelon's is perfect for large groups. Food: complimentary chips and salsa, and the salsa was better than average. Had the beef enchiladas lunch special. The enchiladas were good but not special in any way. The rice was above average. If you like spice, ask for the Serrano sauce- it's spicy and has a great flavor! Service: For a group of 15, service was exceptional. Our waiter Dylan W. handled our orders accurately (only missing one side dish for one person in our group), and there was no additional up-charge for a large group such as mandatory gratuity. We being tourists decided to check this place out while in Austin. We do not regret making the decision. The worst thing I can say is that the decor had 2 light bulbs burned out. :) I had the enchiladas, my wife had the tacos, and we shared flautas. Service was quick and professional. The chips and salsa were incredibly fresh and the food was served hot. Even the rice, which cools down quickly, was hot. That tells me that the server brought the food out right after it was plated.
