this Peet's has a few tables for drinking in the sun for those inclined. brew: italian roast: extra dark roast (m. 2.80) -smooth, heavy brew with a touch of an unexpected perk. must be the "italian" touch. never seen/tasted this blend before. doesn't have the characteristics of the usual Peet roast. -very habit forming.....not the usual dark roast, not acidic at all. read more

Got a pretty disappointing latte macchiato. Milk temp was probably close to 180° and the shots were burnt. I don't expect much quality wise especially during this whole pandemic but this was a big bummer. I've never seen someone throw the espresso in so carelessly. Then i get the condescending "Awww" when i mention peppermint mocha is my favorite. . A little stingy on the chocolate (mocha syrup) too. Back in the "Good Olde Days" and when Men were Men (and Sheep were Nervous), I was a happy Peetnik. From my Albany HQ, I frequented the original Peets on Vine Street and my neighbourhood java joynt on Solano. I'd come in, head straight to the shorter beans line and order a pound of Major Dickason's Blend®, take my free cup of coffee black, and maybe order a sweet roll on the side. For an Iowa Boy that grew up collecting Butternut coupons and drinking watered down Folgers Coffee, this was java heaven on earth. But to paraphrase Bob Dylan - The times they are a-changin'..... I have had an uneasy feeling about Peet's for awhile and couldn't put my finger on it until a recent experience at this Peet's and subsequently the Corporate Office. In this situation, I came in with my son to get some beans (ground to #5) and before I could finish speaking, the "Barista" told me that their credit card machine didn't work. My offer to pay by check was shot down immediately as their unpublished policy is that they don't accept those. OK, how about one of those manual credit card "sliders"? Nope. Is there an ATM anywhere? He had no idea and few service skills, as he suggested that I move on and perhaps try another Peets in Berkeley. By this time, I was mad and my son was embarrassed. So off to the Original Peet's we went with lots of attitude on the part of the 4th Street staff and no sign of apology or care in the world. There's an old New Yorker Cartoon about the difference between a New Yorker and a Californian. The New Yorker says F**k you, but he's thinking "Have a Nice Day". The Californian says "Have a Nice Day", and is thinking "F**k* You. And so it was the next Monday when I called the Corporate Office to lodge a complaint. There was lots of empty happy talk, promises that the store would get in touch with me, and a perfunctory apology. Have you ever made such a call and thought that you were hearing talking points and that the person on the other line fundamentally didn't really care? Have you ever expected a followup that never came? Welcome to a Corporate Peet's that has lost its way. Anyone reading this review can look at my Statistics and quickly surmise that I don't hand out 2 Star Reviews very often or lightly. I also waited almost 3 weeks before writing this to allow my cooler head to prevail. However, poor, incompetent, and indifferent service is one of my hot buttons and this experience still really pisses me off. I'll continue to buy from Peets, but not the 4th Street Outpost. And the new coffee competitors out there look pretty tempting right now. read more

In only the past year or so, 4th St. Peet's has gone from being an occasional lunchtime coffee stop to now being my regular go-to for a cup of joe 1st thing in the morning. How is this Peet's different early mornings compared to afternoons? Before 8:00am, the circus hasn't come to town yet. Most of the time before 7:00am, it's not even crowded. It gets busy sometimes, but not ridiculous. Also, parking is easy to find. I know easy parking on 4th St. sounds like a fairy tale, but pull up at 6:30am & there will open street spaces right in front of this Peet's. Bonus: street parking is free until 9:00am. 4th St. Peet's may be a circus later in the day, but early mornings it's a different animal altogether. I like it & I'll probably be back for my usual tomorrow. read more

I like this location. 4th street strolling through all of the stores, boutiques, Mac makeup, etc while holding a delicious Peet's beverage is always a wonderful experience. Peet's is The Best coffee hands down. One of the latest new iced drinks, "Fog" is a Divine option for chicory-lovers. It tastes like a New Orleans Cafe Du Monde iced coffee. Yes, Divine. Strong espresso drinks, (awesome americanos!), refreshing teas and javivas, excellent ground coffee, and tea options. Just, Heart, and Swoon!! Matthew is a gentleman that works at the 4th street location. I write a Kudos to Matthew for being so ahead of the game that he handed me my Fog so quickly that as I was paying, my cashier said, "where did you get that?" Lol!!!!! With so many patrons, Matthew appeared to have a super power!! Promote this man asap! Great little spot. You have to fight to get a seat on the patio, but the fighting is worth it, especially when it is one of those lovely sunny-but-brisk Berkeley days. The bathroom, however, is another story. I thought it was funny that other Yelpers have their own opinions on the bathroom too. Bathrooms are important! Especially at a place where people sit around and drink diuretic beverages all day! The line for the bathroom is usually longer and has more people waiting in it than the line to order coffee. PEET'S BATHROOM REVIEW! :) this seems to be a very busy and very popular peet's. people were in and out so fast with their coffee drinks but when i sat down out front on the brick the biggest draw to this peet's seemed to be the restroom. it was so funny watching people go in and out to wait in line to use the one bathroom they had. the line was pretty good size at one point but moved pretty steadily. eventually i even had to say what the hell and go inside and hop in line so i could refresh myself. the bathroom was very clean and people were fast and friendly. has to really suck to be the guy who has a bad case of ibs and is stuck in there for a long time with a line. how embarrassing! read more

(looking unsure, because the word medium isn't on the board) me: "no.." (underlying commentary response), "ill get the Vente instead" (I am still very confused and the person behind me is like thinking to themselves that I've been here before. them: "you mean Grande?" (thinking I wanted small) me: "yes.. and wellllll... maybe a one shot~~" them: "you mean the Vente with one shot..but it comes with two shots." me: "oh god...Vente... What is happening to Peet's on Fourth Street? One day I went to get a Flat White. They made something but not Flat White. They could have just said: we don't make that and leave it at that. Today I ordered instead a cappuccino. I have not idea what they made. It was terrible. It was so weak it didn't even taste like coffee. This Peet's is quite small. Not much space to sit inside. However, there's a bathroom and free WiFi! Came by mid-afternoon on a weekday and there was little to no wait to order. Tried their matcha green tea latte and got it iced. I liked that it wasn't too sweet, but they add quite a bit of ice, so you might want to explicitly ask for less. read more

Both the caramel and mocha. I get these drinks regularly from here so I KNOW it was off. TASTE your drink before leaving (hard to do if ur buying for others)! I live on 8th street and I like to go on walks while pregnant to get coffee and walk back home. I've only been here 3 times and enjoyed each time. The last time I went was the 15th around noon. I walked in and the guy who was supposed to be taking orders was talking back and forth with whoever was in the back. I stood there not wanting to be rude thinking he would greet me when he was done but he made eye contact with me several times and kept talking/laughing with the other employee. After a couple of minutes he finally brought his attention to the counter and asked me what I wanted. He was very short with me as if I interpreted his conversation which wasn't work related and I was a bother. The barista was very nice and I love the drinks she makes. read more

I love Peet's. It's been my favorite coffee for many years. However, this morning, I and my friend had two of the WORST coffees we've ever had. I commend the employees for maintaining a pleasant and professional attitude while attempting to serve hordes of people (who need to learn not to linger in front of the fucking condiment bar when people are waiting) - without this attitude, we'd be talking one star. My iced coffee tasted like it was made with half the ground coffee that it required, plus it didn't taste fresh. My friend's sugar-free iced vanilla latte tasted a bit off, and it turned out that it was made with normal syrup, which upset her stomach to no end. Granted, the place is always busier than hell, but today they were not able to deliver what is normally a slam-dunk. Gonna have to take this place out of the rotation, I fear... read more

I work right down the street from this Peet's, so I've grown pretty familiar with it. They are slammed pretty much all of the time. it is rare to walk in and not face a line. I do it anyway, because they are generally fast at getting that line through. I generally get drip coffee, though - the bar seems to get a bit more backed up. To everyone whining about the rest rooms - poor Peet's is the restroom for the entire customer population of 4th street (minus the restaurants). Every store on the street sends its bathroom enquiring customers to Peet's. Why? Peet's (and any other food establishment) is required to have a restroom by law, but all of the boutiques and furniture stores are not. Therefore, most choose to not make their restrooms accessible to the public, because the public is disgusting in their habits. Seriously. I feel for them, because I used to work for Starbucks back in the day, and have my share of bathroom horror stories. No matter how clean you try to keep it, some people are going to be pigs. And I also remember people whining when I cut into the line to clean or restock the restroom. "Can't I go in there first?" Me: "Sure, I'll just stand here and wait for you to do your make-up and leave my staff short-handed in the mean time." But back to the coffee review - they have a consistently good cup of coffee, I usually get friendly service, and on the one occasion my bar drink got bumped by accident, they gave me a free drink coupon without me saying a word in complaint. read more

My sweet savior... Peet's has done me a solid on MANY a work day. My coworkers and I have made it our daily routine to caffeinate at this locale only a block from our work. Hey Peet's Coffee - According to the Sacramento Law Library, beginning on January 1, 2008, California law requires merchants to provide cash back to the purchaser or holder of any gift certificate with a balance less than $10. Time for YOU to smell the coffee because it is December of 2009 and you have to start following the rules from the big guys. My boyfriend and I went to Peet's to warm up a little as we walked along 4th street. Having a $10 gift card, my boyfriend ordered a medium egg nog latte. He then asked for cash back. Let me give you the bird's eye look into the conversation that ensued: Boyfriend: Can I have cash back please? Ms. I hate my job: No, sorry. Boyfriend: Did you know it's a CA law that you have to give cash back for gift cards $10 and under? Ms. I hate my job: (rolls eyes) Ya, I know, it's a law only in California. Well I don't know how to do it. I'll have to call my manager to figure it out. I can call him in 10 minutes if you want your cash. Boyfriend: 10 minutes? Forget it. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. Disappointed in the service (or lack thereof) and disappointed in the outcome. This was probably the worst Peet's I've ever been to. We came into the shop and saw two lines to order. We went behind the shorter line. As we're deciding what to order, the barrista helps the 3 groups of people in front of us. When it is our time to order, she tells us that there is only one line and that we should go to the end of the other line. This made no sense because she took 3 orders before we got there. Honestly, it felt like we were being singled out because we weren't being served for some arbitrary reason. Do not come here. There are double standards for their customers. read more

This Peet's rocks!!! This morning at 9:00am, there was a LONG line and lots of folks who'd already ordered waiting for their coffee. The order takers worked the line for the plain coffee orders and the baristas ~wailed~ on the espresso machine. This is one of the worst Peet's I've been to. I had one girl spill my coffee all over the cup and still try to give it to me. When I asked for a new cup, she gave me an attitude, and the guy next to her said 'we'll get you a new cup out of the garbage'. I think he was trying to be funny, but timing was not good. WTF? That being said, not everyone here is a dork. There a couple of regulars that are really good, and provide good service.
