finally checked out Heyma and it is such a vibe. I've been looking for a new place to lock in and study and this is definitely it. The aesthetic is 10/10 with the cool ceiling tiles and murals about Yemeni coffee history. It is way better than sitting in a crowded library basement. Service The staff is honestly so sweet. The server was super welcoming and actually took the time to say hi. You don't always get that when places are busy so it felt very community oriented. Coffee and Food I ordered the Heyma Latte and it was gas. The espresso is smooth and not bitter at all. The latte art was actually insane and I almost didn't want to drink it. They also have some wild sounding specialty drinks like a Dubai Latte and a Banana Date Smoothie that I am definitely coming back for when I need a midterm pick me up. Ambiance The marble tables and the lighting make it a great place to post up with a laptop or just hang with friends. It is clean, cozy, and just has a really good energy. Since we just had a full dinner elsewhere, we didn't order any food, just coffee. Service was warm and friendly. Inside, the place features a warm, communal, and traditional atmosphere designed to feel like home. Great and beautiful interiors inside, it was like you were stepping into another place not in the USA; I guess one can say the decor is Yemeni-inspired; exquisite and ornate windows, sofas that exude sophistication but also comfort. This place has a lot of options for affordable good coffee, and you can get it in sizes from 12oz to a large pot or a party-size to go. There are tasty latte options too, but I do enjoy a simple coffee like their Turkish coffee. If you're hungry they also have good sized bites, both savory and sweet. The good coffee and snacks are great to enjoy while sitting in their comfy chairs or hanging with a small group. There's lots of space and good lighting from the windows. So I'm new to the Arabic coffee house scene. Came in for tea. Yemei black tea, wow. Flavor palate was extensive but not overwhelming. Added a little honey to mine. Stopped in for a drink after roaming around the area. It was cute inside and clean but tables were all full mostly with everyone on laptops. I ordered the Heyma matcha and it delicious! I loved all the spices mixed in which made the flavor profile very unique from other matchas I've tried. It was too sweet for me though so in the future I'd ask for less sweet. There's a beautiful background on Yemeni coffee by the entrance which I really enjoyed reading. Went here on Christmas Eve and got a socotra, Arabic coffee and my kiddo got a strawberry matcha. The socotra was really good. We also got some honeycomb bread that was great with the coffee. Came here for a quick weekday evening latte. There is plenty of indoor seating, but it filled up as the night went on. A lot of people were working on their laptops (there is free wifi which is very convenient! Parking was easy with street spots right in front. They offer a wide range of unique lattes. I ordered the hot rose lavender latte and really appreciated the presentation with rose petals on top. The flavor was delicious with strong floral notes! There are several other lattes (like the pistachio latte and banana matcha) on the menu I'd come back to try! They also serve Middle eastern snacks and sweet treats if you want something to munch on with your drink. Picked up a Baidhani coffee, slice of rose petal milkcake, and slice of dubai chocolate cheesecake. I highly recommend the desserts that I had. Both were flavorful and lovely to have. The milkcake was fragrant and light. Cheesecake had more of a mousse texturen but had a nice balance of pistachio flavor with a light layer of chocolate ganache on top. Bottom crumb of the cheesecake was made of a crispy layer of Kadayif/Knufeh instead of graham crackers. They also have a decent selection of savory and sweet pastries and turnovers. However this is a coffeeshop and the Bhaidani coffee was disappointing. It tasted watered down and weaker than I expected. I couldn't detect any of the spices/seasoning (ginger, cinnamon, etc) that are supposedly brewed in with this specialty coffee. The venue is located on Univerisity Ave, about half a mile away from the UC Berkeley campus. There's plenty of seating (tables for 2 or 4) with wifi and the atmosphere is good for solo computer work or to catch up with friends over coffee and snacks. Heyma Yemeni Coffee has everything I look for in a coffee shop: delicious coffee, reasonable prices, ample seating and easy parking. I really liked my Orange Blossom Mint Latte. It was light, floral and refreshing. I got it medium sweet and thought it was perfect for my taste. I would have loved if it were a bit more creamy though. I tried their Vanilla Date Latte and liked it, just not as much as the Orange Blossom Mint. It was creamy and very date forward, just a bit too sweet for me. We also got a slice of their Rose Milk Cake to share. It was heavy on the rose flavor and melted in my mouth. I enjoyed it but thought it was a bit expensive (~$7) for a slice. It was more than my latte and I would much rather pay $7 for that. The baristas were polite and pretty fast. This is a great place to get some studying/work done. read more

If you want hot, and I do mean burning hot strong coffee or tea please come here. This coffee or tea will have you wired so you can complete whatever task you need. Their fresh coffee and Aden tea is a 10/10. ..then the other things we ordered went downhill. Baklava cheesecake: at $7 a slice I expected a decent cheesecake. Instead it tasted like a dried out Sara Lee cheesecake with some thin chocolate and honestly it didn't even taste like Dubai chocolate since we couldn't taste the pistachio or the chopped kadayif. Definitely a 1/5 wouldn't order this again. Pistachio milkcake was a hit. 10/10. Like a Pistachio Tres Leche cake, really good. Baklava: horribly dry 1/5, would not order again. My coworker said it didn't even have much honey or pistachios inside. Just plain sad. Honeycomb: 3/5 toasted fresh and topped with honey. Kind of like a dry overly toasted bread with very little cream cheese. Probably wouldn't order this again. Dubai Latte: Wow this was horrible. Looked great though but tasted like old coffee mixed with milk. Didn't taste the pistachio or the chocolate. Wound up throwing it away. Mocha: coworker ended up not drinking it, said it was watery. The lemonade pomegranate was also horrible. Coworker said, "it tastes like country time lemonade mix with light pomegranate syrup with a lot of water for $7." What a mixed bag. The coffee shop looks great though! Service was slow and the two women just complained about every customer so that was interesting. read more

Fantastic Yemeni cafe in West Berkeley! I got their signature Heyma Latte w/light sweetness which was delicious. I loved the cardamon flavor in this drink and you can taste the quality in their coffee. The cafe itself is also decently spacious with good ambiance for getting some work done or hanging out with friends. I did not see outlets when I was there though so do keep that in mind. Overall, great cafe spot I'd recommend anyone to check out when they're looking for a new cafe to try! read more

Such a good spot on University! Yemeni-inspired drinks, Middle Eastern pastries AND They're open past 11PM every night. A dream for late night studies! Service was friendly, and the atmosphere is cozy inside, there's great seating options. I love the booths to sit and study at! The pastry selection is fantastic, and they all seemed pretty fresh. The sambusas were crispy and packed with flavor (although a bit too oily for me), the za'atar and cheese flatbreads were still warm and delicious, and the honeycomb bread stuffed with cream cheese and drizzled with honey was a standout. The Dubai chocolate pistachio cheesecake was sooo smooth and rich! Loved it. We tried the pistachio latte (made with real pistachio sauce), banana matcha latte, and eclair latte topped with cookie crumbles. I have been here a few times. I love the overall ambiance of this establishment. The interior is not your typical American cafe. It beautifully captures the Middle Eastern feel. This place was tight across from our hotel, so we walked over for an afternoon treat! From the hotel it looked very small, but there were lots of seating available. It was warm and inviting (loved the cute little nooks) and we each got a latte and shared a baklava. The man who waited on me was friendly and helpful. They carry decaf wooo!!! To be frank, at first, I was not impressed by this place. Some initial observations included: One. Ah, another Yemeni coffee place - I wonder how this place will set themselves apart? Two. The barista at the counter did not acknowledge me since I guess they were busy making a drink. Okay, had better, I thought. Since they won't acknowledge me clearly I can't place an order either. I wasn't feeling like working (the reason for visit) and I was hungry (and La Mission is only a couple blocks away). I pondered for a minute before thinking I can ditch out. By this time another staff was at the counter, so I think to myself I will leave if they say no to this - so I ask about decaf options assuming it won't be available. Surprise! They say any decaf espresso drinks are available and not sure if this happens in every instance - I got a dollar discount on my drink. They say it was cause decaf beans are cheaper. I mean, wow that's the first time I heard that cause if anything, other places charge extra! They also assumed I lived upstairs (Berkeley undergrad) so they get extra brownie points, lol. The staff kindly bring out my Heyma Latte (cardamom & cinnamon) in a lovely large cappuccino cup. I was slightly worried when I was told the decaf beans were cheaper but the flavor was strong and lovely with the spices. I also appreciated that I could ask for sugar on the side! Inside, seating is plentiful and outlets are widely available - music level is just right and I love the unique interior, in fact all the Yemeni cafes I've been to are great but each are unique. If you don't explicitly specify the size of the drink you're ordering, they won't ask, and instead will automatically give you the largest size available, sometimes even a pitcher, and charge you $16+ for it. That's honestly kind of insane, especially if you were just intending to order a small coffee. It really should be on the barista to ask for the size. It's not standard practice anywhere to default to the largest possible option without clarification. Charging such a high price leaves customers stuck with way more of a drink than they wanted, and it comes across as trying to take advantage of people. That's disappointing, because I actually like this place and enjoy coming here. I've been seeing a lot of Yemeni coffee shops in the bay lately and have been enjoying trying them out! Heyma has a really nice selection of drinks and both sweet and savory pastries/cakes. I got the Heyma latte, which had a strong cardamom and cinnamon flavor. In retrospect, I probably chose the wrong drink since I'm not a huge fan of cinnamon, and since I got it unsweetened, it tasted extra bitter. However, I really liked the beef sambosa I got! I love savory pastries, and this one was had lots of nice spices and good flavor. I just wish it was bigger for the price. For some reason I thought it looked bigger in the display! Overall, I'd give the food and drinks here 4 stars! I knocked it down a star because of the ambience/cleanliness. I liked how it has a good number of tables for folks to study and hang out. However, I was seated at a table near the bathroom and I could smell the cleaner from the bathroom. I also originally wanted to try the honeycomb pastry, but I saw a huge fly trapped under the lid covering the pastry. :( read more

Heyma Coffees drinks are so good!! All the drinks have amazing flavor profiles that are unique even compared to other Yemeni coffee shops. The employees are incredibly kind as well. My only qualm really is the the food displayed could probably be presented better and same goes for the interior of the cafe itself but thats me nitpicking it's i'm honestly great for gatherings and studying and there's a private area to pray as well. read more

Not totally sure if they make it in-house since it came in a wrapper and was sitting in their counter display, but honestly it was really good. This place took my breath away with how stunning and gorgeous it is! The interior is so lovingly designed and truly feels like you've stepped out of Berkeley. The man at the cashier was very helpful in explaining what was helpful, what didn't have milk, etc. I got the Turkish coffee which HITS. I was wondering why the little pot to pour into my cup wasn't full. It's because it's STRONG. It also tastes very bold and forward, which I liked. My boyfriend ended up getting the Heyma latte, which was creamy and delicious. Their coffees as a whole look spiced and keep the history and tradition alive (as Yemen is the birthplace of coffee! I've tried a couple of the refreshers as well, they are good but very sweet and on the pricey side. Plenty of outlets and free wifi, and one of the few cafes that stays open late.
