For the most part, I love Peets Coffee but generally when you mix a busy Peets shop + holidays + demanding customers, the results won't always yield a quality cup of Latte. I love Peet's. Wouldn't mind getting Peet's cards for presents. I know where all the ones in SF are. Now, I love Berkeley and almost all that comes with it. But apparently someone didn't get the ergonomics right at this particular branch. Every time I go to this one when I do some Fourth Street shopping, I have time to go to the bathroom, wash off and redo my makeup, go across the way and buy some bakeware at Sur La Table before my medium lowfat mocha is ready! The last time I was there an order for two green tea freddos was ready for the ladies who CAME IN after I placed my order, almost four minutes before mine was. Sure, four minutes seems like nothing but when you're the audience to the cashier and barista show and you're watching other people's orders walk out the door that four minutes can feel like fourteen. The fact that the machines are tucked behind the cashiers and people are crowded in that corner at the window just causes a traffic jam of Peet's employees and screws it up. The freddo blender is out of the way, hence a faster turnaround for the freddo buyer. Don't get me wrong the employees were working diligently and all; I saw no slacking. I just shouldn't get my drink later than someone who came in after me. The nice lady behind the counter gave me a free drink coupon when I politely complained about how long my wait was, and my drink was just how I liked it, so extra for that. If you aren't getting a regular ol' joe then I hope you have time for your espresso drink. Don't be pressed for time on a weekday morning either. There may not be shopping going on outside, but there are lots of people waiting for their morning jolt. read more

This Peet's is highly trafficked and right in the heart of the 4th Street shopping area, a big destination for Berkeley families. The coffee is fine and the staff is friendly, but unfortunately, it has an always-filthy bathroom. "Always" as in every single time I've been there for years. "Filthy" as in never cleaned often/thoroughly enough for the high volume of customers, and to an extent egregious enough that anyone I'm with also comments on it. Forget whether you can get through using it trying not to actually touch anything - it's gross to think that's the same restroom the food-handling staff also uses. Plus, no baby changing table and not so much as a hook for purses and packages. They simply don't get their clientele at this location - or basic sanitation. read more

If you just like regular coffee, this Peet's is for you. I've been to probably 9-10 different Peet's locations, and 4th street consistanly gives me most amazing drip. True, you have to hang out on 4th street to enjoy it, but those trains going by are nice, even it it feels a bit suburban. The service has always been freindly too.. read more

WOW. I've never wanted to Yelp a Peets but today I need to. Immediately greeted and served by a lovely young woman. As I was waiting the barista called my name and said " your chai latte will be right up, thanks for waiting". I haven't been waiting long. My latte was so super hot and well made. 5stars. read more

I am a Peet's drinker, like the beans and freshness. It's my staple at home. I was at this branch yesterday afternoon (Sunday after Christmas), and the service and flow of the whole store needs improvement. Wow. I counted 8 staff, only 1 was taking orders and the store was crammed because of the line and slow speed of order taking. Many in the line I was in were dissatisfied and curious about the whole set up. On top of that, the froth and milk in the lattes I ordered were not up to the standard I'm used to at Peet's. Nevertheless, they usually are my stop when I go to 4th St. but I hope things get better. There are other coffee options in the neighborhood. read more

I love Peet's, and frequent the 4th street location often. My late afternoon go to beverage is a decaf late, and today the flavor was off. I decided to say something and instead of a friendly face or a fresh drink I got a large serving of attitude. I am highly disappointed, I felt as if I was offending the barista for saying something and made to feel stupid and like I was trying to get a free drink. I am a Peet's Coffee addict. I have gone to most of them in the Bay area. I liked them all. ( 5 + stars for the original Peet's on Vine street) . This one, on 4th, used to be very pleasant as well. I shop a fair amount on 4th street and I used to go to this Peet's after dropping off my kids at their respective schools. Well, in the past year or so, the barista changed and not for the better! Bad attitude from several of the employees is now the norm. Also, I sometimes ask to get a spare cup as I order an extra large coffee and I like to pour half into the spare cup, add a soupçon of milk, and keep the other half for a later pick-me-up (without milk, so it does not go bad if I don't get it to my fridge for a while.) Several times now, I have been told I cannot have a spare cup! I do recycle and I tip too. All the other Peet's are very accommodating. So that's it. I am done getting my coffee at this 4th street Peet's. I go across the street to Betty's to go or I go to any of the other three Peet's in my area. read more

Since the remodel and crew change of this store in earlier this year the Fourth Street store is horrible, the service is absolutely horrific, whoever is in charge of this store should be completely embarrassed. I'm a decade-long customer of Peet's and I would like to report what I saw today at Peet's Berkeley location (1776 4th St.) I have been to this location a few times and today (4/16) around 6pm, i ordered my latte - nobody was making coffee and I just stood there confused for a while. Staff was cleaning the countertop with spraying "all purpose cleaner" everywhere. Nothing around it was covered - the espresso machine, coffee, milk container for steam milk - all got sprayed out. What was more shocking was the staff was wiping the sprayed counter barehand using her hands and paper coffee filter. Don't they have enough cleaning materials? Anyway, she was done wiping the countertop with spray cleaner and her hands (no gloves!). Guess what? Right after that, (without washing her hands or anything like that), she started making my coffee, touching all those equipment you need to use when making latte - and the thermometer that goes INTO the milk steamer... I was shocked to see all of this happening right in front of my eyes. I didn't really want my coffee at that point and I just wanted my money back. Anyway she made my latte and I said "Thank you", but she didn't say anything back to me. - She had a name tag on (I won't reveal her name here). Really? Do people here spray the cleaning liquid all over without covering anything? And cleaning with barehands and no hand wash? Is this happening only here? or All Peet's operate this way? Especially, the entire ambience of this location is very strange from all other locations I've been to: not welcoming, not friendly, no one seems to enjoy working here, etc.. But more than anything, I really want my money back. The latte she made tasted like the cleaning liquid. read more

They have the filthiest bathroom in all of Berkeley. It rivals ones in the third world - think Moroccan gas stations. The door is black with filth. The floor, the walls - everything dirty. It's a place where you try not to touch anything. And in a food establishment. People who handle your drinks and food use this bathroom. Maybe a visit by the health department would be in order. read more

By far the strangest experience ever. The staff had no idea whether or not there was an electric Outlet to charge a computer. In store, there were zero places to charge a computer. Seating is just a bar area and outside. The staff could not answer simple questions like where is the milk. They couldn't find any!!! This place is a joke. read more

I often go to the 4th Street Peet's on Saturday. I was there on April 1, post-remodel. The staff appeared to be new. I ordered a cup of their brewed coffee. It was watery and tasteless. They made another "pot," which was equally tasteless. This is not what I expect from Peet's. read more

Generally they are very laid back and kind, but today they were jerks. Telling off a customer in front of me for not ordering "correctly" without a mention of anything else. They didn't even know what he ordered or seem to care and all they could say was "you'll have to get in line and try again" - really? Not a response I've ever heard from a Peet's person and not a resolution either. Went to Peets this evening after an enjoyable day in Berkeley. Service was okay, coffee was great, but the restrooms were another matter!!! The bathroom was disgusting!! It reeked of urine and there were at least 3 employees standing around talking and not one could bother to clean the bathroom. There were no seat covers and the floor was covered in what I am sure was pee!!! It was rank!!!!!! Will not go there ever again!!! read more

I love Peet's. This Peet's can get crowded but the employees usually have it under control. Most of the employees are very friendly and knowledgable but this Peet's loses a star for one of its employees. There is an older woman who has been working there a few of the times I've been in. One of the times, the half and half was out. I brought it up to her and nicely told her that it was out. She gave me a blank stare and kind of growled at me. I think she has been a Peet's employee for far too long. Other than that the drinks are always just how I like them and the store always looks nice. Peet's on Fourth is an excellent place to visit for a morning cup of caffeine on a nice day. read more

I usually go to the Peet's on Vine Street, but have gone a few times this summer to 4th Street. The outstanding event of the visit was the service from Meesha, who took my order. Peet's still wants to sell you coffee by the bag, but for some reason seems to hate having to play at being a coffee shop. The 4th St. Peet's is mall coffee, not a coffee shop. Expect erratic sloppy service, and if you can get a seat expect to sit in a trash pile. If you get a friendly barista, it seems like an accident. Definitely not company policy. Unlike other reviewers, I actually got a good cup of coffee from them, thus the second star. But there was no line and it took time 5 minutes. And then their wi-fi was down (the only reason I had stopped here was because I needed a quick email check and my phone was dead). I didn't feel like waiting for it to come back up, but thought I would be nice and let them know before leaving. The employee offered to get me a new code, and I told him it wasn't the code, it was the internet because it wouldn't connect much less let me enter the code. To which he snottily responded, "Well, no one else is having problems." Ya, because no one else had a computer open at that particular time, genius. It was just completely rude and turned me off. I didn't even want to use the internet by that point, I was just trying to inform them they needed to restart their router (no big deal) and was met with a "you're wrong and dumb" attitude, when I am sure I have more tech experience than this lame barista. read more
