Although we'd used Heights Woodworking 10 years ago on a simple project, Heights Woodworking was a…read morenightmare for us this time. We spent a HUGE amount of money (like a car loan amount) for a pair of interior doors, we sent architects drawings, molding samples, photographs and measurements. It was hard to get the attention of the main crafstman or owner, but they finally arrived, looked at the project then left. They proceeded to deliver doors that didn't fit the woodwork they HAD MADE IN THEIR OWN WORKSHOP, the doors were 1/2" thinner than the thickness we had specified. Additionally, the woodwork wasn't complete, which they discoverd on-site, and they attempted to HAND CARVE a continuation of a curve which ended up looking horrible. Apparently, their original measurements were incorrect and they tried to cover up. They claimed they would repair plaster/sheetrock around the opening which remains half done and terrible. We gave them payments on time, as requested and for the full amount and never should have done so. I received 5 or 6 versions of invoices from them, each of them with a different bottom-line, as if they were made up from thin air when the office staff couldn't find the version they had provided the week before. I must say I have never been as disappointed in a contractor I'd used previously. The project was barely supervised and hugely over-priced for the result we were delivered. They have a beautiful workshop, but beware.

Then we realized that doors didn't line up,wood was warping after 2 weeks and the lids were breaking. At first they fixed the initial problems but when the same and different problems resurfaced they wanted to charge to have them fixed. We hired this new business because they were new to Park Slope and offered competitive pricing compared to other companies and Citibin. Unfortunately, they don't stand by their work when the problem was their own design flaws. They used wood that was too heavy for the top opening doors, Then they used hydraulics that weren't secured properly and couldn't support the added weight from addressing the warped doors. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this new business because they were unwilling to fix their design flaws I don't suggest doing custom work if you won't stand behind your product.

I had the privilege of communicating with the owner himself and I was very pleased with him. Personality is a key factor in this world no matter what area of business one is referring to. The fact that he was such a nice man and really took the time and effort to help me decide how I wanted the coffee table to be made, starting from the type of wood I preferred all the way down to the color of paint I wanted, truly made me feel that his piece of work was worth every penny of mine and let me tell you IT MOST DEFINITELY WAS!!! I absolutely fell in LOVE with how my coffee table ended up becoming that in addition to that, I had the owner make me cutting boards for my kitchen and a shelving unit for my living room as well! It was the best decision I ever made going to 5th Avenue Wood Works for all the jobs that I desired to have done. I bragged about how pleased I was with my pieces that I even got my cousin to have the owner do a job for her. Unfortunately, time was not on my side and I was unable to make a purchase here but the service was top notch. I was greeted at the door and offered a lot of advice. There was a large selection of tiles to choose that were absolutely beautiful. I actually wished I had more time because I would have redone my entire bathroom. Then we placed an order on a relatively tight timeline - the tiles were supposed to arrive from the supplier 3 days before our installers were going to start. Freddy called me with the bad news that the supplier had been giving them the runaround, and it was looking like we would be a month delayed - the chain reaction of this would have left us totally screwed, but without even asking (although I was ready to beg) Freddy said he would make some calls to other stores and suppliers around town to see if he can figure it out. Within two hours he texted me that they found all the stock we needed (over 150 sq ft!) and had them in the shop that afternoon. Completely saved the day and bent over backwards for us when they could have just said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They have a huge selection, fantastic prices, and amazing staff - there's another guy whose name I unfortunately didn't get, but he was just as friendly and helpful as Freddy. Would highly recommend Mosaic Supplies, especially instead of trying to order something online yourself - or if you find something you like online, bring the idea to them first and they'll sort out the details. They also recommended a couple installers (although we ended up going with "Marcos & Bruno Tile and Stone Specialists" who we also found on Yelp and were perfect). Amazing store!

We had a couple of false starts on the first appointment, bur from that point on, John was incredibly responsive, professional and clear in communications with us. We must have had him develop and tweak the drawings 8+ times before we arrived at the final drawings. He personally came to the site to measure a few times. GKD only supplies stock cabinetry - nothing custom. Their warehouse is in New Jersey. As a result, the cabinets were delivered to us 7 days after we approved the final drawings; as promised and in good condition. One back panel was in the wrong material; the correct panel was delivered the next day. We also needed to modify and order other panels, and John was very accommodating and helpful in arranging that immediately. Other cabinet suppliers we talked to seemed to specialize in expensive custom cabinetry, which we felt was unnecessary for our needs, and the timeframe for delivery was 6 to 8 weeks (from Europe). Heaven knows what would happened if one piece was damaged or incorrect - it could protract the cabinet work by months. Speaking of costs, GKD was very affordable - again, a consideration that mattered greatly to us. The quality of the cabinets was very good, including the soft close features of the drawer and doors. The range of cabinet designs and materials was also very good. We felt we got excellent value for our money, but more than anything else, we got wonderful, personalized service from John.
