Although we'd used Heights Woodworking 10 years ago on a simple project, Heights Woodworking was a nightmare for us this time. We spent a HUGE amount of money (like a car loan amount) for a pair of interior doors, we sent architects drawings, molding samples, photographs and measurements. It was hard to get the attention of the main crafstman or owner, but they finally arrived, looked at the project then left. They proceeded to deliver doors that didn't fit the woodwork they HAD MADE IN THEIR OWN WORKSHOP, the doors were 1/2" thinner than the thickness we had specified. Additionally, the woodwork wasn't complete, which they discoverd on-site, and they attempted to HAND CARVE a continuation of a curve which ended up looking horrible. Apparently, their original measurements were incorrect and they tried to cover up. They claimed they would repair plaster/sheetrock around the opening which remains half done and terrible. We gave them payments on time, as requested and for the full amount and never should have done so. I received 5 or 6 versions of invoices from them, each of them with a different bottom-line, as if they were made up from thin air when the office staff couldn't find the version they had provided the week before. I must say I have never been as disappointed in a contractor I'd used previously. The project was barely supervised and hugely over-priced for the result we were delivered. They have a beautiful workshop, but beware. read more

I have never had to chase a vendor as much as I had to chase Heights Woodworking. Every time I called the would *promise* they'd call me right back. Never happened. This went on for months. They are completely unreliable and that speaks volumes about how they run their business. read more

I wanted some new kitchen cabinets and I was searching for a good company to make them. A friend of mine recommended me heights woodworking and that was the best that he could do for me. It was an absolute relief wen I realized that this guys know what they've doing. I had an estimate that was actually better than some others that I asked for in different places. They have a huge place in gowanus and they do everything there. I had some ideas of what I wanted to do but the design solutions that they show me were awsome. I end up changing my all concept. The guys came to do the installation on time and they didn't left a mess after they finish what surprised me a lot. read more

We had a great experience with Mr. Scully and his team of expert woodcrafters and installers. We contacted them for a new front door for our 100 year old house. While we were not in a landmarked area we did want to recreate the original look of the entryway. They got it. If you are interested in a door they will come to discuss the project and make many visits to make sure it's all what you want including photographing your entryway masonry, measurements, a sketch, and matching the woodwork in your vestibule. They can literally make what ever you want, so be prepared with some photos and a good idea what you would like. They have every thickness and type of wood and every kind of woodworking equipment for cutting moldings and trim for the door, even hand carving is available. Before we had our door built we were given addresses of other doors in the area that they made. Those doors were just gorgeous and we were very excited. The finished door lived up to all our expectations and then some. People stopped on the street to ask where we got that beautiful door! It took about 3 months start to finish. About a month of that was not their fault as the lock we wanted was back ordered. While making the door takes 1-2 weeks other things can delay the project. The door will go up in one day and will be lockable but 1-2 return visits will likely be needed to finish the job. While not budget priced the job was fairly priced. The quote includes everything: fabrication of the door, its trim and its surround (which is a lot of lumber even more than the door itself), the glass, the hinges and floor pins for a double door, install a new marble threshold if needed, install the locks, reinstall your doorbell and mail slot, repair and fill in cement if needed, and take all the debris away and clean up (these guys brought a shop vac with them!). I hope some of our neighbors decide to "go with" Heights and based on my experience I feel they will be very pleased. read more

The new owner spent a lot of time with us, made sure everything was done properly, and even gave us a tour of the workshop! Pedro, the chief woodworker, was kind, patient, fair, and sharp. Heights Woodworking is quite simply one of, if not THE best cabinet making and custom woodworking shops in New York City. The owner, Amor, took the business over from his father who started it in the 1940s and so they've done business in Brooklyn for over SEVENTY YEARS, and as such this company has proven its worth well beyond the judgement of a few recent misinformed neophyte 'yelpers.' I am a furniture designer and have had many complicated and intricate projects fabricated from scratch by Amor and his crew of master craftsmen, and each and every piece was completed to my professional standards, and most of the time even beyond. If you are considering having custom work done you must keep in mind the fact that you are essentially paying for a prototype. This is not to say that the quality will in any way be in question, but, depending on what it is you are having fabricated from scratch, you're going to have let go of some of your preconceived notions and expectations regarding the process and final product. First of all is the time frame. When creating, let's say, 10-foot-high front doors for an historic brownstone, there will always be unforeseen circumstances and possibly complications that arise which then have to be considered then fixed. That's what professionals do and Amor is certainly more than capable of handling these kinds of issues. But sometimes these issues do take additional time to address, so know that going in or go to Home Depot and match up your cookie-cutter expectations with their Chinese made cookie cutter products. Secondly, the small tolerances achieved through the process of making hundreds of thousands of the same item cannot be achieved when only one such item is being made. It's not to say the custom doors won't fit or windows won't slide easily, they will. But if you're having a custom bench made and it turns out EVER-SO-SLIGHTLY different than the one in your Disney-inspired imagination, be okay with that. You have the only one ever made and it looks great. I know it looks great because Amor put his stamp on it -- and none of your friends is going to notice that the wings you wanted carved into the back only 'kind of' look like Tinkerbell's. Also, if you're having trouble getting Amor on the phone, it's probably because he's out in the shop taking care of building your project and not sitting around waiting for phone calls. I make no apologies for the patronizing tone of this review. This new culture of people who feels it's their Manifest Destiny to review everything from a stupid ice cream cone to the color of their Iphone needs to be kept in check. If it's not, we, who reside in the real and tangible world, will soon find ourselves "reviewed" out of worthy, NECESSARY and professional businesses like Heights Woodworking -- all at the whim of people whose only verifiable profession is reviewing. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Major caveat emptor on this one. I don't write reviews that often, and I usually keep it on the positive side when I do. Heights Woodworking? I physically cannot stop my fingers from typing this negative review. The apparent purveyor of this struggling business (whom I'll call 'Amande' for the purposes of this review) makes a fine entrance. Though there were initial delays in booking his first (and only) visit, he did finally show, and oh, what a performance. We completely bought it. Friendly, humble, practical, full of advice and full of stories of his business' humble origins, his father's dramatic immigrant story and how they came into woodworking. You get this feeling of, "Hey, finally a real, homegrown Brooklyn business where they know what they're talking about, will listen to you and help you carve out a good deal." All the way to the tip-the-hat goodbye at the end of this one visit, we thought we were in good hands. "I'll have an estimate to you in a week! Please send specs/pics of your ideas." We get to work on measurements, descriptions, we Photoshop pics of our ideas and send them within two days. Then---add purple smoke and sparks for effect----POOF!!!! Gone. Two weeks. Three weeks. We send the most courteous email imaginable, just checking in, sympathizing with what we thought might be a tight workload causing delays. "Oh, yes, I'll have the estimate by the weekend." Cut to orange smoke and sparklers this time: POOF!!! Gone and now no longer answering emails. One of his employees (whom I'll call "Vince" for this review), takes over the email thread: "Oh, he was waiting for your specs, but I had to tell him you already sent them." "Please don't think we're flaking out on you" (direct quote). Stretch the simple, one-week promise ('Amande') had made to a sordid, 5-week long slog. 'Vince' finally sends us this, and I quote: "I am so embarrassed about this. I have been PLEADING with ('Amande') to do this estimate. He keeps telling me he will. We had a "discussion" about it this morning - Tuesday - and he claims he is going to do it by tomorrow morning. If you want to abandon all hope, I could not fault you for it. I would also understand if you think we are too flakey to deal with. I wish I had something else to tell you. If I were in charge......" I could paste the next couple of exchanges that came in this MONTH-AND-A-HALF-long saga, but why. I can think of no more damning a thing than the words 'Amande''s own people use about he and the business that employs them. Stay. Away. read more

I needed some custom cabinet doors that I wanted to look like real windows with mirror for window panes. The specifications needed to very exact because I already built and installed the cabinet boxes and the contractor could not get the cabinet doors correct - kind of in a time crunch as well. It all had to work within my measurements - the mirror, strong, and 3/4 thickness. I went over to Heights Woodworking and they showed me sample of window detail that I picked out. They were able to make my five windows/cabinet doors in about a week or so. They look awesome!! Very strong, primed for painting and super exact to my specifications. When I made a mistake on installation they were able to get me new mirror for one window in two days - they even grinder the mirror when I wanted it to be a tad smaller - all for 10 bucks for the new mirror. They try very hard to make you happy with the result and they really have woodworking skills to do whatever you ask. Very relaxed and congenial but also amazing results - everybody loves my cabinets. read more

I am writing this review after my Tudor front door was completed several years ago. The installers did a very poor job which has now been fully evident since we just had to remove an indoor side molding to complete some new wall repair. We found that the workers had placed the brand new molding on the old original deteriorated wood framing instead of replacing it . In addition the new door when installed had a small damage in the wood on the front. A repairman came to correct the problem but actually made the problem worse and more obvious. We sent pictures to the owner complaining about the need for further correction but never heard from them again. When the secretary called and asked for the balance of money's due we said we were waiting for the completion of the work repair which never happened, therefore they never received the balance due. read more

I am terribly disappointed with Amor and his Heights Woodworking Co. I met with him twice at his shop and both visits involved long and pointless delays. My order involved several custom doors, about 60 feet of custom molding and a bathroom vanity. He said he'd love to do the job but needed a couple of days to prep a proposal. I waited and waited. I telephoned and emailed him. His secretary sounded flustered and urged me to be patient and to hang in there. All to no avail. After almost a full month I finally gave up without a word of explanation from him. His behavior was entirely unprofessional, frustrating and humiliating. read more

I'm so perplexed. After missing one scheduled appointment, Amor (sp?) came over to look at our door frame to have a custom double door and second door created for our brownstone. He was really knowledgable and really impressed us with some things he pointed out that no other vendor had addressed as issues. However, after that, no estimate. I've called no fewer than five times and the woman who picks up the phone keeps saying there's a stack of files on his desk he just hasn't gotten to yet. I was very honest, saying "if we're not going to get an estimate, please just let us know" but was reassured that it would be coming. Nothing. I just called again, got hung up on, and now the calls go straight to voicemail. Disappointing since they seemed so capable in person... But I'm giving up. We have used heights woodworking on three projects so far. Words cannot express just how in love I am with my new front door (I uploaded a pic of it) ! It's been up for almost a year now and I still can't stop staring at it. And we are not only impressed with the quality of their workmanship but their service as well. I get so many compliments on it and how it has transformed my house. It took us a long time to even find a company that could even replicate our solid wood tutor style door. It was worth every penny. Heights walked us through the whole process and we were able to even see our door being made in all it's steps. Next , we had them replicate a French door for us, which we also love. The third project is small and was done very quick. It was rebuilding an old cutting board we had in the family for a long time. The next project I cannot wait to start. I am thrilled with the quality of the final product, but there were glitches along the way. Communication can be an issue. They tend not to respond to email; phone is the best way to reach them. Everyone I spoke with there is very nice, yet key details (like measurements) that were phoned in didn't always get conveyed to the right party. I wish I could give it 0 for customer service. To be fair, the owner may be nice, and professional but my experience was with the lady who works in the office, who was exceptionally rude and unprofessional. I was looking for a specific lumbar dimension, went to Dykes lumberyard, who were extremely helpful, but didn't have the specific size, and were kind enough to recommend checking heights woodworking. I called heights woodworking, gave the specific dimensions, were told they have that specific size and quoted a price. I got there only to be told they don't have that size, and will have to glue two pieces to make that size and quoted a much higher price. I told the lady that she waisted my time. A professional would admit that they misunderstood, and apologize. Instead, she went off, yelling and saying it was my fault for not specifying the size. (I know I mentioned all dimensions, as when I returned to Dykes, the person who overhead my phone conversation was surprised that they didn't have it, as he agreed that he heard me mentioning all dimensions). read more
