I was moderately satisfied with his work then but not completely because the table wasn't put back together properly. I should have contacted him then but didn't and that's on me. But within a year the finish on the table looks bad. So I'm not happy with the work and wouldn't recommend him. read more

Sylvain did an excellent job in repairing a chair that was a gift from my father. He not only repaired the broken arm, but manufactured a new piece that could not be replaced. He even addressed areas of weakness in the rest of chair. When the chair was returned, it literally had never looked better. Sylvain did such a nice job on repairing our bed. The drawers under the bed (it's a bed with storage) kept sinking after our move and I couldn't figure out why. He came and took a look, identified the problem immediately. Instead of giving me a quote right on the spot, he actually took his time to analyze the steps and materials needed for the repair, and then gave me a quote with itemized actions. Sylvain is a pure craftsman. I found him here, on Yelp. I showed him a table that was in pretty rough shape; I knew it was an antique but I didn't know its origin nor value. He immediately knew its country of origin and the era it was built, and told me it could be valuable. Valuable or not, I simply didn't have a big budget to restore the table. So he researched its value for me so that I could evaluate to what degree I wanted to restore it, and that was really helpful. He ended up restoring the table to as close to its original condition as possible, but charged me $100 less than his first quote. I think it was 4 weeks from when I first texted him to when I picked up the table. He did beautiful work and how refreshing to do business on a handshake. Just adding to the kudos here. I brought an old (1930s or so), not especially valuable but cherished wood rocking chair to Sylvain for repair and refinishing. I had painted the chair white as a child, and my attempts at stripping the paint years later were insufficient, to say the least. One arm was broken completely off, all the joints were loose, and the wood was in dreadful shape. The chair came back better than I could have possibly imagined, absolutely gorgeous, and I enjoy looking at, and sitting in it every day. I chose Sylvain based on Yelp reviews. I had two sentimental pieces of furniture that were damaged and needed repair. They were not antiques but I wanted to know they were in good hands. After some confusion over setting up our first meeting (yelp messaging being less than ideal) we sorted it out via text. He inspected the rocking chair and mirror I needed fixed. We talked about how to approach the chair which had some decoration which I didn't want restored. I wanted it basically revived and preserved--aged quality and all. Sylvain provided an estimate and we arranged for him to pick up the items. He was able to fix the mirror on site (creating a new dowel at his studio and installing it when he returned). The chair required being transported (so that added to the cost--he gave me the option of delivering it myself but it was large and unwieldy and an Uber wasn't going to cut it). After a couple weeks the chair was returned to me looking like it had a new lease on life. He found a way to smooth out some dents, stain, and polish it so the old blended with the new. It looked like a 40-year-old rocking chair but that had been treated much better than it had been in life. He was able to fix the mirror quickly and even improve the design a little. While his fees were not cheap, I felt I could trust him with these sentimental items and I was pleased that all my expectations were met. He treated my non-antiques with the greatest care and that's what I was most concerned about. read more
