I had the delight of engaging Jane to finish a treasured wood Thonet chair that had seen a fair amount of torture in its 70+ year life. I reached out to her half thinking she wouldn't want to take on such a small job, but she invited me and my chair to her studio straight away. As I waited for her to step away from a piece she was working on, a survey of the space revealed at least two centuries plus worth of exceptional furniture in all states of repair, but each an exclamation point along a long continuum of exceptional design. I took away that anyone who trusted Jane with any one of these pieces must know something of her skill set. I'd just had a several-month odyssey of my own identifying a source for rehabbing a Knoll Wassily chair with new strapping and the learned re-assembly of same, so I have an infinite amount of respect for those who can coax new life into something of great value. Jane immediately provided me the confidence she knew how much work my chair needed--and what it didn't need. Like many functional, well-made objects of similar vintage, this thing had been loved, used, and in no way did I need it to look like it had the factory finish of its day--which was often for institutional or commercial use. We agreed to a price, and I told Jane she could have as much time as she needed to do the work, and departed. Some three weeks later, I got a message from Jane while traveling the chair was finished. When I was reunited with it, I was overjoyed to see it finished with less gloss and perhaps waxy buildup I usually see in chairs its same vintage. What resulted was warmly and richly re-stained with hand-rubbed satin glow that still makes me stare at it with quiet content. I would not hesitate to recommend Jane Henry to bring life back to anything you treasure. She's who and what anyone would want in a refinisher or re-imaginer of something beautiful: patient and thoughtful consideration for how an object was produced and how it needs to serve its owner again. Jane is that rarest of people left in Manhattan: An artisan willing to hang on to what is surely a ridiculously-priced space to be able to work close to home and be accessible to an audience who needs and deserves this kind of work. When our house-sitter accidentally spilled water all over our dresser, which I inherited from my grandmother... we needed to find someone to get rid of the big water stain on the top of the dresser, as well as the dribbling water stain all the way down the front of it. We found Jane through Yelp and are so glad we did! The person she sent to do the work was courteous and meticulous, and the dresser now looks wonderful. Plus, Jane was super-easy to communicate with. The whole process was a pleasure. (One heads up: The smell is REALLY powerful, so you might either want to pay to have them transfer your furniture to their studio -- an option I declined -- or at least move the furniture in question to a room you don't sleep in, and plan to have windows open and fans going.) read more

How often does someone really need to repair or refinish a piece of furniture? Once? Twice? Never? I own a nice coffee table from the 1970's that needed some love after my toddler took to it like a jungle gym. I searched for some refinishing and repair companies, and came across Jane's studio. My coffee table extends to twice its size, and has a ton of screws to keep it all together. It was also missing two legs and a third had broken off. Jane gave me a quote, and I opted for the repair service only, since my toddler is still a toddler, so the refinishing will happen later. Jane told me that new legs may not match perfectly, but to be honest, they really look like they've always been there. Pricing was incredibly fair, and the final price ended up being lower than the estimate. I plan to have Jane refinish the table when my toddler is perhaps not as interested in it. Pick up & drop off was very easy. Jane's studio shares a fairly busy parking lot, but there's a ramp leading up to the elevator where Jane can meet you. I'd recommend her studio to anyone with lots of furniture to repair, or the once-in-a-lifetime fix. read more

The millworker who built the desk a few years ago had assured me that the finish would stand up to frequent use, but it did not. After some back and forth with Jane about the best finish to use given that I couldn't bring it to the shop, I feel very good about what she suggested and how Stravy applied it. She was able to come to my apartment for the repairs, and she was very professional and efficient. We decided to clean all the multiple sets of fine wine glassware in our china closet . I told my husband we should put a 10$ bet on who would break something first- we completed washing and replacing all the sets of wine glasses when as an afterthought I was placing a small cocktail shaker in the cabinet when that little torpedo slipped from my hands and crashed down onto an art glass fruit bowl on the counter- shattering it into pieces.
