We should have taken the previous negative reviews more seriously. Although the location may be appealing, our experience was disappointing and unprofessional. We cannot recommend this business and will not trust it with any of our other pieces for repair. And we felt the experience was so disappointing that we would not even buy anything from this place, despite the convenient location. We brought in a piece for minor touch-ups and to glue back a small, approximately 1 1/2-inch piece that had chipped off. We clearly explained that we were not asking for a full repaint, reconstruction, or extensive cleaning. The owner "Bob" initially quoted the work at "under $200." We then started talking to the owner. He even asked personal questions including how much we money make, "Do you make $150?" In any case, the work was given to another man, who looked 40s/50s and appeared very rushed from the get-go. He initially had to leave to purchase glue. After about 45 minutes for the glue to apparently dry, Bob told us the total would be $200. He said the full $200 "was implied." During this short time, we overheard negative comments being made about customers. Bob looked at photos of the piece (taken by another employee) and both said they were not happy with the work, and that the guy in the back rushes too much. We were asked to return a few days later. We did so. When we arrived a few days later, we were not told that the additional touch-ups we had discussed had not been completed. These areas had been marked with tape. When we returned, Bob directed us to enter the workshop and inspect the piece, but he did not explain that the work was incomplete or personally inspect it. Nor did he even know that the work wasn't done. The same 40s/50s-ish age guy in the back told us he "doesn't have any patience" for this type of work. He made dismissive comments about the piece, said "Bob is too old" to do the work himself, and refused to address the minor areas we had specifically discussed with Bob prior to leaving it. When we questioned the worker in the back why the agreed-upon touch-ups had not been done, he raised his voice and told us to leave the workshop, saying that we were "in his space." We found the interaction hostile and unprofessional and even kind of abusive. He even called us a derogatory term. This was especially confusing because Bob had directed us to inspect the piece in the back. The worker then told us to inform Bob that the work was not completed and that he was finished gluing the broken piece. He actually rejected the touch ups that owner Bob ensured would be complete by this day. But they were not done, Bob didn't know, and more troubling he didn't ensure that they would be done. Bob never inspected the work in person, did not adequately supervise the job, and did not offer to complete the touch-ups himself. Although he said he would just charge for the glue and provide a refund, we received only $40 back. The work was incomplete and did not reflect what we understood had been agreed upon. We were not expecting perfection or extensive restoration, but we did expect the clearly discussed minor touch-ups to be completed. And for the owner Bob to stand behind the work, even if it meant him to do it himself. He literally told us to go buy some supplies at the craft store one block away. So dismissive and unaccountable to his generous customers. The main issue here are lack of communication, supervision, accountability, and willingness to resolve the problem. We also explained that we had brought the piece from out of state and had other items we were considering bringing in for repair and resale. Bob dismissed this and said it, "doesn't matter." We felt even $100 was not justified for simply gluing the piece, particularly since the agreed-upon touch-ups were not done. Based on our experience, we cannot recommend this business and will not bring our other pieces here. There are many other businesses to choose from. This one does not meet our expectations in any way and found the items being sold in the store largely junk. At least with Salvation Army or the other charity based ones are better in our view because the money goes to a good cause. Housing Works, Habitat For Humanity, Re/Store, etc all have quality products without the drama of this place. read more

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS STORE. While I was shopping, I overheard the owner verbally abuse, berate, and intimidate a woman because she brought her dog in. It was so traumatic for everyone in the store. He cursed and threatened her and her dog. It was truly a horrific experience. read more

Brought my great aunt's rickety dining chairs in for repair. I had retrieved them from my parent's house where they'd been used in the summer dining area on their screened-in porch for at least 30 years. They really showed the wear, but I loved them anyway. The joints were wobbly and the original springs and horse-hair stuffing were coming apart. Bob reglued the chairs and installed new seats with new padding and fabric he had on hand. Eight years later he fixed a broken spindle and you can't tell which one it is. An excellent job at an affordable price. read more

What a place! In the 1970s and 80s there were tons of quirky specialty shops like this run by curmudgeonly owners all over the East Village. This is definitely a throwback to that era but the stuff for sale is very well curated and not crazy expensive. Their specialty, however, is repairs. If you phone in advance, you will get the third degree on the phone - it's better to just walk in and show them what needs to be fixed. Chances are they can do it. read more

Put this one in your contact file--mark it "recommended!" Restoration Antiques is a NYC find. It's a charmingly cluttered antique store/antiques repair spot presided over by the all-knowing owner, Bob. I've had a pair of mid-century wooden antelopes repaired (four ears and two tails broken off) and they were perfect when picked up; inexpensive fix, too. We've purchased several unusual items we love, also at reasonable prices. And when we recently went through a downsizilng, Bob was able to have several big pieces sent to auction where we got decent prices. And if you've got an hour to kill on a quiet afternoon in the East Village, drop by and tell Bob you'd like to discuss history or politics (!) You'll find it a rollicking good time. read more

Spectacular experience working with Bob and Julio! They were friendly and very helpful in moving a one of a kind piece up 3 flights of stairs at my 4th floor walk up, despite it weighing well over 150 lbs. The shop is quaint in size, but deep in quality, I'm in love with nearly every piece they offer. Truly a must see. read more

Good repairs, a little cranky (old school NYer: I don't mind), a little more expensive than I'd hoped but reasonable for handcrafted repairs. I recommend them. read more

A gem of a store if you are looking for affordable restorations or last-minute film set props. They have a great selection of mcm as well as antiques. The owner, Bob, is a hoot. An old school New Yorker that can spin yarn with the best of them. Two thumbs up and a snap. read more

Great watch repairer! Was in and out in 5 minutes. Highly recommend if you're in need for a new watch battery.

The front desk staff is not as helpful. The owner can be a little snobby, and was not wearing a mask during my visit, as he should during the COVID pandemic. He was quick to interrupt when I'd ask questions. That said, they did a good job with my piece, but I must add that it was over-priced. There are other stores I have been to in the city that could have charged less for the same work. I'd shop around and get a quote from them before dropping off any items. read more

Excellent service! I've had two pieces of furniture restored by Bob. If you are reading this review because you are searching for the best spot to have your valuable piece restored, then you have found it. Bob cares a lot about the quality and integrity of his work and he offers great value for his services. The fast turnaround time is also a huge plus! Thank you. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would. Absolutely terrible. The one person in there we rude and condescending. There are a hundred antiques stores in New York City, don't waste your time or money here. Went in here to explore with a friend from out of town. There is a small sign towards the back of the store on the ceiling that says "keep out" - this is not a part of the store, it is a literal sign telling you to keep out of the area that is also full of antiques. Not only did I venture back there, but so did the other people in the store. The person manning the shop then stumbled back to us as if he was having a medical emergency only to condescend and belittle the people who had mistakenly wandered back. Costumer service is seriously lacking at this place, I seriously recommend not wasting your energy and more importantly your money. read more

I brought my grandmother's cedar chest in to be restored. When we picked it up to bring it there, the side snapped in half it was so old and dried out. This guy performed a miracle on this piece and his price was very reasonable for the work they did. read more

Rude individual hung up the phone before I had a chance to explain what I needed to be restored. Typical NYC a-hole.

Bob is a great guy with expertise and knowledge with restorations. I appreciate his help and humor. Thanks Bob I enjoyed our conversation and your advice. Hard working man and loves his job. read more

I brought in my mother in law's scratched up, antique dining table with detailed carved legs. They performed a miracle! The table looks brand new, like the day it was purchased! I even bought 4 antique chairs to go with the table. I will bring them 4 more large pieces of antique furniture to restore. I highly recommend their services!! read more

I came here to see if I could get the glass to my hand mirror fixed. I was greeted by a friendly gentlemen who stopped to thoroughly examine my mirror and how it was assembled. Even through the shop does not repair glass, I was directed to a business that did. I suggest coming here first for the service alone -- much can be said for people who genuinely enjoy their craft and helping customers. read more

I'm floored. I just called in to ask about restoring my grandmother's antique violin, and the wonderful gentleman who answered the phone told me how to do it myself inexpensively! Who does that these days?! Who does that in New York these days?! Super honest and very kind. I will definitely bring them my business in the future!!! read more

It was refreshing to meet someone like Bob, who owns and manages the store. I took him an old solid wood chair that was in about 8 pieces. legs all broken off. other people i had take it to said i should just burn it! but Bob and his team put the chair back together, ship-shaped, in 24 hours. i was totally AMAZED by the quality and friendliness of the service. can definitely recommend read more

A framed picture, which was part of a set, fell off my wall and smashed. I tried numerous framers, none of whom would agree to repair the picture frame and nobody could match the style either. I was about to get the entire set re-framed when finally a very high end framer suggested I bring it to Bob. She said they referred customers to him regularly. Despite the frame being in a terrible mess, Bob had it glued and repaired within 2 hours for a nominal charge, so I was delighted. He was also very friendly and chatty. The shop looks like it might be a bit of a hidden treasure trove and I reckon Bob is someone worth getting to know. read more

love this place. great vintage furniture and service.

Just had my mid century coffee table restored here. They did a great job in a timely manner for a reasonable price.

The consummate pro. It's true, he's probably not going to be your new friend or make small talk. But, If you have something old and broken, he's the man to fix it well and properly. read more

very nice people to deal with , a pleasurable experience buying a vintage piece..would gladly buy something again - Thanks!

I don't know what this man's work is like but I wouldn't deal with him my self, because he (the owner) is one of the rudest and coarsest people I have ever met in a shop in new york . As I heard cursing in the street I vaguely wondered about, His own employee a single employee that I saw, in the shop, who works in the back, looked unhappy and stressed out . This kind of snap judgment (understandable in one dimension, purhaps ) and irrationality can spell trouble in some instances down the road. I'm not saying it would, but it might .He came in and I was then personally ( and violently ) insulted by him over a dry, close to empty bottle of water that was not mine (no dampness of any kind ) and that I had taken off of a black laquer cabinet (a sale peace), and put on his business desk. I don't know if the desk was for sale but it was being used for his business . The bottle was actually brought in by one of his clients that I was speaking to in the shop. We were very careful. I'm a restorer and collector of antiques myself. "Restoration antiques" has mostly furniture. there Is very little in the way of other antiques but some pictures on the wall it almost practically looks like a furniture shop. I'm sorry to write a review like this, over a shop I hardly know . But it's not fun, to experience such appalling and inexcusable customer relations. The woman I was pleasantly chatting with , his own client, seemed even more upset about it than I was. read more
