When you first see the sign outside Pazzo Pomodoro, you get the feeling it is one of those small chains built for kids who want a quick slice of pizza and a soda. Well, the sign is a bit misleading. Tonight was about the fifth time I've been to PP, and I have never had a bad experience. I've tried the Lasagna, Ravioli, Vermicelli pasta w/ clams, angel hair pasta (capellini) with meat sauce, etc. and all have been excellent. I've had the pizza as well and I always love it. The baby clams taste fresh and delicious in the white wine sauce, the red sauce is excellent too. I often wonder if the owner(s) wish they had leased a bigger space as every time I go the restaurant, it is packed full- a great sign. Tonight, I ate my favorite (vermicelli w/ white clams) and my wife had the angel hair w/ meat sauce. We were both very hungry, had to wait a bit for a table and when we got our table we devoured the bread- which is delicious. Our salads were fresh and tasty and then our meals came and I inhaled mine, all while keeping an eye on my wife's. She couldn't finish hers and I took over and really could've eaten all her food, but I didn't want to look like a....well, you know. The service was great- the whole staff truly works as a team, from the hostesses, cooks, to the management and especially our server, everyone is always busy and very professional. I have to start with the seating. From that point forward things went downhill. We were move three times. Then the waiter showed no excitement or interest in explaining and presenting the menu and much less the wine list. Our appetizers order brought an item that wasn't correct. The rest of the food was ok. Probably the pizza was the best. The Carpacio Di Manzo, Chicken and pasta were not great. I've been here 5 times. The first time I went in December of 2016, it was amazing. Ever since, it's been going down hill. I last ate at Pazzo in August of 2019 and it was awful. Food was acceptable, but priced out of the range of the surroundings. It's a small place in a strip mall next to a Whole Foods, so it survives on the yuppie crowd. I had ravioli and water, wife had sphagetti with meatballs. It tasted OK, but $14 for a plate of ravioli was a bit steep. Service was ok; nothing special. I've heard many good things about this restaurant and we finally made it our business to see for ourselves. This really is one of the best Italian restaurants in the area! Northern Va is chock full of chain restaurants. This little place in Ashburn isn't one of them. We started with an appetizer of calamari fritti. When served a dish with half a lemon neatly wrapped in mesh, allowing you the flavor of the juice without the pulp and seeds, I'm already smiling. The accompanying marinara sauce had just the right amount of kick enhancing the flavor of the sea food. Our entrees consisted of a luscious Lasagna alla Partenopea (Homemade meat lasagna, tomato, basil, sliced eggs, meatballs and soppressata) and a succulent Petto di Pollo alla Sorrentina (Chicken breast sauteed with homemade mozzarella, parmesan cheese, chopped San Marzano tomatoes, wine and fresh basil). I cannot begin to tell you how delicious these were! Had my husband and I been able to finish our meals, we would have tried one of their pizzas as well! Since no meal is complete without dessert, we ordered tiramisu and cannolis to go. Both were equally delectable! Because we waited a bit to order, our server was nice enough to acknowledge that and included a house specialty called, Baci di Sofia Loren, or petite chocolate cups filled with zabaione and fresh berries. My son ordered fettuccine alfredo with chicken, which wasn't on the dinner menu, but they made anyhow, which was nice. However, it was $22!!! I ordered vermicelli with mussels/white wine sauce, which was cheaper than the fettuccine at $17 which is kinda unusual, but whatever. It was excellent and light, but the serving of pasta was really small. That's about all I can say. If money is no object, the place is fine. If you get an appetizer, bread, main dish, then dessert, then you maybe won't leave hungry. But if you go for just the main course, don't come starving. read more

I gave this restaurant five stars a couple of years ago, but the last four times we've gone have been less than wonderful. The menu lists several pasta dishes--capellini, vermicelli, linguine, rigatoni. I am a fan of the vermicelli, my husband is sold on linguine so when we ordered at the restaurant I specifically asked for the vermicelli and was disappointed when I got linguine! The first time it happened the manager said that he was surprised I knew the difference because most people don't . Really?? The second time it happened they apologized and said they would mention it to the chef. The third time they just said that was how they did it despite what appeared on the menu. Today they listened and explained the original chef had left three years ago and the new chef doesn't do it like the other guy. He makes linguine even if it calls for capellini! The mozzarella en carozza which was excellent in the past is bland and bonded in so much Panko it is ridiculous! The best thing about this restaurant is their sommelier. But, someone is not paying attention in the kitchen. I ordered parpadelle bolognese sauce, good sauce but the pasta was a soggy, gooey mess, way overcooked. Come on, is pasta, you have to bad to mess up. Also, why cant they use some decent Virgin olive oil for the table and bread. Is either the lightest olive oil or a blend. We found this restaurant by accident. We walked in around 7pm and it was void of any customers, so I was a little hesitant. I ordered a seafood dish and a four cheese pizza. I made a mistake of not reading that there was blue cheese in their Quatro formagio pizza. I apologized to the waitress and within 10 minutes she gave me a new pizza without the blue cheese. Finally a higher end Italian restaurant in Loudoun. A step above simple pizza and spaghetti places, for a special dinner. The menu caters to both simple and higher end northern Italian tastes. Just what was missing in Loudoun. Excellent wine, antipasto, and northern Italian food. Enjoyed a good bottle of Chianti, saltimbocca seafood stew, and antipasto. We (party of 5) went for lunch at 1pm on Sunday. No one was at the door to seat us. I had to look for someone at the bar area and was told to wait at the front until someone comes. We were sat in the atrium at a round table that was crowed into a corner next to the servers station. I had to move my chair to avoid getting bumped every time a server got drinks, etc., from the station. I ordered the Pappardelle Bolognese. The pasta was overdone and the Bolognese sauce lacked flavor, most notably garlic, an Italian staple. Same for my wife's angel hair pasta order. The Caesar salad and bread was very good. Before our main meal came, one of the servers took our bread plates, then asked if we wanted more bread. Hmmm! Our Server, Cynthia was efficient and polite but we felt rushed. Odd because there was only a handful of patrons. Lastly, at the bottom of the menu, it states that paying cash is encouraged and if credit cards are used a 3% surcharge will be added to the bill. Given this is a small locally owned business, I get it. But it still seems a bit tacky. Don't believe I've seen this on other small restaurants in the area. read more

Constant companion and I had an urge for Italian and decided to give Pazzo a try. We had a reservation and after a minimal wait were shown to a nice table in the back area. Tables were spaced out and mostly full. The atmosphere was pleasant and it was nice to see people having a good time. Service was excellent; waiter and support staff made sure we didn't run out of drinks or any other necessities. We split a caesar salad, a very generous portion unfortunately the salad was very dry and lacked any real flavor. Entrees arrived after a bit of a wait and again the portion sizes were very generous but once again both lacked any real flavor; each needed large doses of Parmesan cheese just to have any flavor. Eggplant Parm and Cavatelli with sausage...one positive was the Italian bread for the table was very good. The dessert menu looked really good but we decided to pass. Overall, Pazzo didn't meet our expectations, service got the score to three stars, and will not be included in our rotation. After hearing good things about this place I was hoping this would be a good Italian meal. Unfortunately, after our experience last night, we won't go back...life is too short to eat mediocre (at best) food. We were warmly greeted and promptly seated, but the restaurant was extremely noisy. I could barely hear our waiter telling us the specials and he was only a few feet away. We ordered Pinot Grigio, which was strangely one of the only Italian wines on the list. It was luke warm. We then ordered a bruschetta type appetizer which was okay, but the olive tapenade was so salty I couldn't eat it. For main dishes I ordered the Vermicelli with mussels in white wine sauce, my husband ordered the fish stew. My dish was hot and that's about all it had going for it. It was THE blandest dish I've ever been served in a restaurant. The "sauce" was wine and water. No garlic or other detectable seasonings other than a few bits of parsley. The mussels were overcooked. The pasta was cooked well but tasteless. I actually had to salt the entire thing to make it somewhat palatable. I didn't come close to finishing. My husband reported his fish stew was "just ok", not very flavorful and definitely lacking in substance...only a few pieces of pasta to fill in. We then ordered dessert, which was a mistake. We ordered the tiramisu and cannoli; the tiramisu was mushy and the cannoli tasted old and stale. The ONLY reason I'm giving this 2 stars instead of just 1 is the staff was kind and accommodating. Our total bill with tip was $100 for one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. It's almost unbelievable that we paid that amount and walked away hungry and extremely disappointed. read more

Two words, simply amazing. My family of four visited this establishment with great hopes of finding a true Italian restaurant that knows how to truly make a pizza; we found it. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and were able to see the open kitchen bustling with activity and the warm smell of pizza being fired in their pizza oven. The kitchen staff looked as if they were one unit working together which was rather impressive. This is not a huge place, about 15 tables in the front with a separated bar area in the rear. The first sign that we knew it was going to be good was that every table was taken except ours. The waitresses were all in uniform and presentable, our waitress was Mary and she was amazing. We had the calamari as an appetizer which was lightly dropped olive oil and herbs. Perfectly cooked and presented with appropriate garnish and flare. Calamari is hard to master and is either terrible or perfect, there is no in between...ours was perfect. We were also presented with delicious bread and a side of olive oil. The bread was very obviously home made, warm to the touch and amazingly sweet. Of note, my kids had lemonade and my wife and I had diet cokes....why mention this? The drinks stayed full during our entire course; without missing a beat the waitress ensured that we didn't go thirsty and it wasn't to the point where she was bugging us, it was spot on. The next huge win was that Mary monitored our progress against the appetizer and asked us if we were ready for our meal. DING, win. 3 Minutes after asking we were greeted our deliciousness. I had the veil and my kids each had their own 12 inch pizzas (of course I stole some of theirs) The veil was succulent and juicy like it should be with the right amount of spices and twang to melt in my mouth. The sides were a mix of spring veggies and three potato wedges. The big success of my meal was the presentation, everything evenly placed with care on a nice dish; heck if it tasted terrible I probably would have given it a positive review. You can really mess up veil too, but they cooked it like a pro. Now for the pizza. Words alone cant describe the meticulousness they clearly put in their pies. The crust was amazing, not too hard or soft and covered in cheese and spices with the right amount of oils. The ingredients they used were of the freshness you would get straight from the farm, you will notice this after your first bite. Each pie ranges from 12-14 dollars and are 12 inches in diameter, they have about 15 you can choose from ranging from the simple cheese to the sophisticated Italian bonanzas. There is nothing like a pizza oven cooked pie, and they clearly set the standards in this area of how to do it. The environment there is cozy and geared towards the family nicely decorated with a warm Italian pride. I felt like I was back in Italy in a small bistro outside of Florence with each family having their own interesting conversations at a light dull roar; if you are looking for romantic and quiet, don't come here, this is a family restaurant vibrant and full of energy. My family and I have been on the search for the perfect place to get a pizza in Ashburn....we found it. I hope that you enjoy this tiny gem in the suburbs like we did.
