We came in around 4:00 PM and the place was busy. They had been busy all day, and the selection was clearly picked through. We were sad to miss the cannoli donut that was advertised, and who knows what could have been on all those other empty shelves. There were still plenty left to get six with good variety. The first thing we tried was a glazed sour cream on the drive home. That was the moment everything I thought I knew about donuts had changed. I used to have a co-worker who would make donuts at home and bring them into work, sometimes still warm. I always thought it couldn't get any better than that. Even at a day old, I think I'd still go with Paula's. They melt in your mouth while retaining the integral form and texture of a well made donut. The cream is extremely sweet, and stands out even in the context of world class donuts. We were intrigued by a peanut donut filled with cream, but the reality is just an ass blast of sugar on an already stellar donut. There's a dentist's office located conveniently next door, which may or may not offset Paula's dental footprint. The donuts we got lasted us through the next day, and as I said, at no point through the process were they not my immediate first choice for donuts in any setting. Always fresh and always delicious. This visit we got the cannoli, Boston crème and their cinnamon roll. The cinnamon was fresh out and still warm when I ate it and it was the greatest joy of the trip. Tasted like a warm, lightly sweet from the glaze and just so soft. The cannoli is always a hit with the family and their Boston crème's come filled with very little doughnut which is perfect in the eyes of my family. Huge delicious treats and great helpful staff. Before the pandemic my favorite aspect of going to Paula's, is the tables I could bring my kids to to have a freshly made donut with coffee, the two on special together. So many choices and I love the jelly, custard or cream filled donuts with the same cream on top . The chopped peanut coated donuts are a nice breakfast. My friend whom I got some for told me to ask for the cheese filled donut which I've never had, a farmers cheese. I went to the Transit Rd. location and purchased a dozen donuts for my office. I was shocked at the size, weight and amount of filling given per donut. Every employee, in my office, remarked on this and how tasty they are. Why anyone would go to Dunkin or Tim's to get, literally, half of what you receive here, is hard to believe. We stumbled across this place by accident, literally spotting it as we drove down the road. We weren't looking for donuts, and honestly not even looking for any food in particular. My wife recognize the name as the one that caters for her company at the Buffalo location, so we decided to pop in and give it a try. The young man who helped us with our order seems to be possibly new. he struggled to understand which donuts we wanted, having asked multiple times to pick the right ones off the shelf. Now on to the good stuff... The donuts. We selected for to try. The chocolate frosted, the chocolate cake, the red velvet, and the Pumpkin. All of them are cake style donuts, and on the larger side. They were quite dense, and you could tell they had been sitting in the case all day (we got there around 6pm). That said, they were still pretty good. For a first visit, I'm willing to chalk up any negatives to showing up late in the day for a store that obviously makes their donuts fresh every morning, as well as a kid at the register that was probably new to the job. So Paula's are definitely a northern donut kind of place. They are huge and heavy. Eat 1/2 of one and you will go into a diabetic coma... however with that being said, if you are in the mood for donuts, this is definitely a place to check out. The cheese donut is my absolute favorite (made with cream cheese not cheese cheese lol)... and the Nutella donut definitely comes in close in 2nd. Now, if you're southern and you want a light and fluffy donut... then you may want to try another place. I was almost giving this Paula's location a 4 star because of the long line ordering takeout. Then I watched how fast they handled it! These workers have their crowd handling down pat! 2 people were at the counter taking orders while 2 other young ladies came out to the line and each took another order. The girl took my money and my donuts and sandwich were brought out to me in a very few minutes. I bet I wasn't in there more than 10 minutes and I had to look for what I wanted first. I got a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on the jalapeño bagel. It was delicious! I then had a jelly donut. It had lots of jelly in it. No skimping on the filling and it was also delicious with their coffee. I went at 7:45 which shows as a slower time. It was busy but it's worth a longer wait if necessary because everything was really good and the staff was friendly but also fast. Very big good doughnuts. They're almost too much for me unless I'm super hungry and want one as a meal. They're sour cream glaze doughnut is my favorite and my husband loves the chocolate glaze. I tried the frozen cappuccino today...it was okay 6/10. Tasted good as a hot day "coffee" drink to cool down but wouldn't suggest as a morning coffee choice However their ice coffee is super good so I'd go that route again for a real coffee drink! I ordered ahead today since I was home with the little ones and didn't want them to go into the building. It was super easy, I called ahead and by the time I got there I told the worker at the door my name and they brought it outside to me. I go to this Paula's location every now and then. My last visit to this Paula's was to pick up a holiday gift for my brother and SIL. I called ahead to ensure they still had Paula's K-Cups in stock, and a friendly person answered and confirmed. I went a little later to grab my K-Cups, a Paula's tee shirt, and a gift card. The friendly counter staff let me take a look at a couple different sized tees, and offered a donut box to use as a gift box. I would not have thought of that, but it was definitely a great touch for my gift! The donut box was big enough to hold two fun standard-sized coffee mugs I purchased elsewhere (they do sell Paula's mugs though, too), the 12-pack of Paula's K-Cups, and a gift card for a dozen donuts (a dozen runs $21). The tee was wrapped separately for my brother (tees are $15). On Christmas afternoon, my brother and SIL were all-smiles when they opened up their Paula's gift box. And my bro loved his tee, too. If you have a donut-lover in your family, this was definitely a well-received gift! In regards to this Paula's location in Clarence in general, it is in a strip mall with easy lot parking. It is a smaller Paula's, I'd say maybe 6 to 8 tables inside, or so. The line can be busy, but the staff is usually out from behind the counter, working the line and taking orders to keep it moving along. Paula's donuts are homemade and HUGE. This is NOT a diet donut! They have all the traditional flavors you'd expect, and throw in some variety from time to time too, like cannoli donuts. My favorites are the peanut cream and the peanutbutter cream. My hubs loves the jelly sticks. Our son loves the red velvet donuts. No plant-based donuts here, so our vegan daughter just salivates when we bring home Paula's, haha. Paula's is a local small mom-and-pop kind of operation, but I would love to see them add at least one vegan donut to their lineup, even if it is only available on certain days. The food here is excellent and there is usually a line going out the door. My absolute favorite is the headlight donut, but red velvet is a close second. The honey dip is good if you want something sweet but not too rich. Also love that they offer a Veteran discount. Service is usually very friendly and they let us know promptly if they are out of an item. As far as what could be better, we usually do have to wait in store even when we order ahead. For coffee, that makes sense because they want it to be hot when you pick it up. IMO, at least the food should be bagged up and ready to go by the time promised when you order, but that has not always been the case. That's why I took off a star. Hate to gripe about it, I know they're busy, but there is definitely room for improvement in this area. First, let me get this out of the way: I do not stop at Paula's Donuts every time I pass by, much as I'd like to, and yes, I know donuts are not good for me. Hmpf. But these donuts are truly a treat! At our last visit, we picked up a six pack, just to sample different kinds and each was delicious. There are places within the shop to eat and enjoy - either counter seats or at a table - not many seem to hang out inside, rather take the goods and run. I've even seen people eating donuts in their car, powdered sugar all over their face. The interior atmosphere is lackluster, vintage (not especially in a good way) and well, just not conducive to hanging out. It'd be worth considering creating a coffee shop feel (the coffee is excellent!) at Paula's to complement the effort put into the great donut business it is! read more
