Obviously, it skews to Polish specialties, but the standards are here as well: Donuts, sugar cookies, fruit danishes. Exceptionally friendly clerks (one of whom is the owner as well) who make you feel instantly welcomed. Lots of parking on the street outside the business. Finally, after missing out on catching this Polish bakery when its open had the opportunity to stop and wasnt disappointed. Being Polish, "chursciki", rather purchasing it in a bakery, or making it homemade was something that I grew up on as a favorite Polish dessert. I was quite suprised to see that they were sold by the pound, at $ 15 if your not looking for too many,its worth a try. The only downfall is they werent covered and crunchy enough like Im used to eating. The rest of the sweet treats, cookies, bread, rolls and pasteries were inexpensive. Fun fact learned, the bakery makes the pretzels for Flying Bison Brewery that they sell. I was looking for the best 'pączki' in town. Since we can't travel to Canada, I had only a few ideas about where to find real, traditional Polish baked goods in Buffalo. I don't usually look for them, but this time I truly wanted to look for 'pączki' and share some thoughts. Damn you Yelp! Imagine that. Mazurek's bakes all kinds of goods since 1933. My food snob friend says, they have the best rye bread in the Buffalo area. They still use "a brick oven with a steam boiler that was installed in the '30s. The steam is used to provide the famous rye bread with a nice firm outside crust while being perfectly soft and moist on the inside of the loaf." I think, also their secret is to make everything with heart. I saw only smiley faces and experienced warm greetings. It's not an elegant place. They focus on offering Polish-style breads, cakes, cookies and pastries at reasonable prices. Hopefully by sticking to traditional recipes, they won't change under a new ownership. About their 'pączki', I have to say, they met my expectations in most of the categories. The size was just right, about a hundred grams, not too big. They were nicely covered with a delicious shiny film of rum glaze. The color also was just right, golden brown with a visible lighter ring around the middle. I like how dense and spongy they were. The shape wasn't exactly consistent. So, I asked the person at the counter to give me the prettiest ones. Some were too flat, some had too much filling which I wasn't a big fan of. Their traditional black raspberry filling is too similar to regular donuts -- over processed and gooey. It was still good, and I'm sure most customers will find it perfectly delicious. The price is very attractive, only $1.20 per each sweet goodness. Buy a half or full dozen and the price is even lower. I know where I'll go next time, if I need a loaf of bread. I already picture a perfect Reuben sandwich with homemade dressing and slowly cooked sauerkraut with gold, sauteed onion. read more

It was the day after Paczki Day (if you know, you know) and these folks were still serving delicious, house made baked goods with smiles on their faces. I asked if they had any paczki left. Rookie mistake. I could see yesterday's frenzy flash before her eyes. Yet she playfully laughed & politely said no, so I ordered a cherry turnover & dipped. It was flaky, gooey, fresh, immaculate -- everything you'd want out of a turnover. Basically an adult toaster strudel that was made with a little more love & a lot less preservatives. I stopped here yesterday morning to see how this place was. The service was great. The employee was enthusiastic. There wasn't much to choose from. I had a coffee and it was just okay. I bought a peanut stick donut and some anise cookies. The anise cookies were good as was the donut. The place was laid out well and I liked the set up. The Old First Ward that brings back Fond memories for many, Myself included. St. Bridges Church, The Old Neighborhood Irish Day Parade, McCarthy's Tavern and of course, Mazurek's Bakery. Just before Easter I had the cravings for some rye bread, You Know the kind, that once melted in your mouth with out the spreading of butter or jams and then some cookies that looked like they were taken from the oven just a few minutes ago... Well, Unfortunately the cookies weren't fresh or made that day and the rye bread left a lot to be desired. I was told I should call ahead, Kind of like making a reservation. where the bread that came out of the oven would've tasted that much better and the cookies they to would've tasted much more fresher. If you try to do a corn maze and you are very clumsy and accidentally destroy the maze, then it's just another Maze-u-wrecked. Which is exactly what this little First Ward bakery is named after. Mazurek's bakery is a Buffalo institution and bakes some really awesome sh**. I think their Rye Loaf is super famous and I definitely like it, but I also think it's hard and dry and not great for sandwiches, so you might want to try it yourself before taking my word for it. Similarly, I heard they make fresh hot donuts, but whenever I've gone in there they weren't hot, and when I had them, on the one hand they tasted really good, but on the other hand definitely not fresh and straight out of the fryer, and maybe a little on the drier side. I will re-up this review when I get the chance to try the donuts fresh-fresh the way they should be, but for now it gets a very solid 4. An excellent bakery that is steeped in tradition, and everyone that likes bread and home-style bakeries and Buffalo legends, should give it a shot. My wife is a great cook. So when I say I LOVE THIS PLACE it is because it has both great old world recipes, and people in the back room that know how to bake them into life. My wife sets a high polish bar and this place surpasses. OK, the shelves are not always full at the end of the day. And not every item may be on the shelves every day of the week. This is a real old school Polish bakery in the Old First Ward South Buffalo neighborhood just outside of downtown. The Mazurek's have been running this place since the 1930s but its been a bakery since the 1890s. The one must get item if you make the trek here is the fresh made rye bread. Oh my gosh the bread is so good. Its great for making sandwiches or toast or whatever you want and they'll slice it for you or you can buy it non sliced if you want. In addition to the rye bread pretty much anything you buy here is going to be good. Their custard doughnuts were great and their pastry hearts (a Buffalo speciality) I'd recommend as well. They do paczki (pronounced poonch-key) on certain days (check their website to see which days) which are basically giant Polish doughnuts. Its in the city so they don't have a parking lot but this isn't a very busy area of Buffalo so you shouldn't have problem finding a spot to park right in the front of the bakery on S Park Avenue. This place is definitely a Buffalo classic in my mind so be sure to check it out! read more

I would give this bakery 10 stars if I could. The baked goods are delicious and the service is excellent. I work for a local company that is located nearby. We have called them on many occasions to order cookies for on-site lunches, cakes for retirement parties and danish/muffins for meetings. As we are located nearby, they deliver which is super convenient. The cakes are always top notch. We just ordered cookies last week for a luncheon and ran out because everyone loves them. Last week I went to a restaurant in Niagara Falls with my husband. Our salads came with rye bread. I took one bite of the bread and told my husband how delicious it was. When the waitress returned I asked where the bread came from and she said Mazurek's in Buffalo...what a pleasant surprise!!! read more

Love the Polish rye...fresh w/caraway seeds. You can purchase sliced or unsliced. Go unsliced so you can gage the thickness yourself. Makes great bread bowl for dip for football games. Donuts were a hit esp. the maple nut. Not very many bakeries left like this so don't miss out. read more

Ty and the team are wonderful and accommodating. With a little notice they can prep any order you request. I got some Danishes and coffee to feed my construction workers on a rainy Saturday. Oh dear Yelpers, if you haven't been to Mazurek's, you've been missing out on a true hidden gem in the Queen City. Pumping out bread and pastries for 80 years strong and counting, Mazurek's is a little neighborhood spot the like of which I wouldn't expect to see in Buffalo. Snugly settled into an ages-old storefront with a store area itself no bigger than a breadbox, Mazurek's is admittedly short on amenities. Heck, they don't even have tables and chairs to sit on. The charm here is all old school. What Mazurek's does have is the best rye bread I have had in years at an incredible price, hearty and full of that slightly bitter yet delicious rye taste cleansed from the mass market breads found at Wegman's and Tops. This is bread I will be back to purchase three or four loaves at a time to freeze to ensure that I never run out. When that apocalypse comes, Twinkies and rye will be my salvation. What Mazurek's does have is hearty carrot and chocolate sweet breads uniquely suited to a Sunday morning brunch. What Mazurek's does have is a group of people who understand customer service, who will explain to you what they make and how they make it, who will give you time to come to your own decisions before adding sage advice, who give out free goodies in celebration of their 80th year of operation! I have only given four stars to Mazurek's presently because I have not yet tried any of their cakes or more traditional pastries, elements for which any review of a bakery would be sadly incomplete. I look forward to updating my review shortly to reflect the fact that I believe this to be thus far the best bakery in the city. read more

I was dying for some good, seeded sour rye so I sent my daughter off to Mazurek's. She was to purchase a two pound rye and some Napoleans. The rye was purchased however we needed to revert to plan II as far as sweet treats go - no Napoleans. Mazurek's only offers paczki on the weekends so that was not an option. We agreed on six donuts and two of what she described as "cheese squares". The "squares" turned out to be two Polish style cheesecakes. They will be eaten, no question, however they are not as how I remember the cheesecake of my youth. I cannot detect the layer of sour cream which should be on top of the actual cheese portion. I am also not so crazy about the pastry base. The donuts? Well was I pissed when I saw them. They are not filled as one might expect with a tube inserted into donut center, they are sliced and slabbed with filling. The anxiety over these lasted until I tasted one, or maybe two. I can say that they are like nothing I've had before! The actual donut has more of a "cro-nut" consistency. The filling is delightful! My angst turned to joy and happiness prevailed in our humble abode hunkering down to ride out a storm of epic proportions. read more

Proceeded to go to the store on south park and asked about the broadway market stand and was told it was closed permanently. This is your no frills old fashioned bakery. You know, the kind that does not exist in many places anymore. It has been around forever and has character. They bake several kinds of breads, cookies, desserts, and use left over dough for noodles. I stopped in today (could barely get in the door), the day before Easter so all they had left were cookies and some breads. We did manage to get a huge slab of cheesecake. I have never had cheesecake like this, I don't know if it is a ricotta based one or what but it is delicious. I can't wait to go back to try more of their baked goods. read more

I ordered a Birthday cake for my son who is a freshman at UB. Being so far away from home, I was unable to get a cake to him personally for his first birthday away from home. The owner Ty personally delivered the cake to his dorm and confirmed that it was properly delivered to the right place. The best part of it was my son said it was the best cake he and his roommates ever had. This is saying a whole lot all four are from NYC or just outside of the city. Brownies were light. I could have made better brownies from a box. Donuts were so dry and stale that someone could have choked. The flavors of the donuts were terrible as well. They had an ad for pretzels on Instagram for "pretzel day" but when I went there and showed the lady the ad she said they never made those. That's false advertising. I would never go back. read more
