    Open faced turkey
    Kathleen K.

Not crowded on a rainy Wednesday. We stopped in before an event. My husband ate every bite of the hot open faced turkey sandwich. It was very good. The Jonny says guacamole mayo. It is really mayo with a hint of green. The sandwich would have been better with either avocado or guacamole. It was just ok as is. Service was prompt and friendly.

Went here in the spirit of Saint Paul's winter carnival. Social media had informed me that participating locations would have special drinks for the event! Upon arriving, no special drinks were mentioned, so I just ordered off the existing beverage menu. I like pomegranate, punch, and Moscow mules, but ordering the Pomegranate Moscow Mule Punch made me realize maybe those are 3 things that should stay separate. Almost everything on the menu has bacon, which I don't normally eat, but I was in the mood for a burger, so I got the equivalent to a regular cheese burger and gave the bacon to my boyfriend, who had ordered a plate of gravy. Just kidding -- he had the so-called famous hot turkey. Reported it was good, but might not have been without the gravy. My burger and fries were reminiscent of the Sysco warehouse they likely once called home. The location of this place is conveniently located if you're looking for something convenient before/after a Wild game, but nothing to go out of your way for.

In town for business in Saint Paul, my colleague and I went to McGovern's for dinner after having late arriving flights. Fortunately, McGovern's serves food late and had plenty of tables open on the patio near the waterfall, with the Vikings/Bears game on. (Gotta love the hometown enthusiasm of Vikings fans!) I opted for the turkey Reuben, and it was delicious! The smoked turkey was probably the best I ever had, the crunch of coleslaw for a topper was fun and upgrading to the sweet potato fries was a delicious choice! Our server Matt was prompt and friendly. I paid with my corporate card and sent the receipt via email. Unfortunately, likely due to my company's spam filters, the email never arrived. My company has a strict no alcohol purchasing policy and requires itemized receipts, so I was in hot water. Via the web form, I contacted McGovern's and asked if there was any way they could find me a copy. Just a few short minutes later, Kelly emailed me and sent me the receipt! What terrific customer service! Next time I'm in town I'm definitely stopping by for another meal. Thanks McGovern's!

It was my first time here as I'm from out of town (MI). It was a Tuesday night and I'd say semi busy. The sign inside said "seat yourself" so since there was an empty table right in front off the bar by the TV. I sat there, no waitress or bartender in sight. Sat for about, 5 mins before I saw a bartender. She immediately started helping people at the bar (I get it no complaints). Waitress came and asked me what I was drinking, I went with the Minnesota Black and Tan. Spoiler alert, it tasted like a black and tan, maybe a little worse as I like Harp or Bass with my black and tans. Being as I like to try multiple things when I eat. I got the large pretzel as an app and the Westened burger. After ordering food came out in 10:47 (I set a timer), so pretty fast.. The pretzel, I liked it, it was served with a cheese sauce and a spicy mustard. Even without the sauces it was a decent pretzel. Now the burger, this burger comes with onion, lettuce, bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce. I enjoy bbq sauce on burgers. They did not ask me how I'd like it prepared, I'd say it came medium well. I tried it with all the toppings, and it's a very tasty burger, I give it a 6.8. But with so many toppings that add to the flavor, I like to try just the patty. The burger itself, was very average, not much flavor, not juicy, I give it a 5.5. The fries I liked quite a bit, crispy and fried just right (for me at least). Overall a good visit, if I am back in the area I'd come back to try other things.

Wow--can't believe I've never been here before! We visited around 12:50pm and sat on their amazing patio. It seriously felt like we were at a resort--definitely not your typical patio. We started with the artichoke dip, and it was the most interesting-looking one I've seen, but wow--it was fantastic. So creamy and flavorful, and the pita chips and bread bowl were perfect. For lunch, we shared Dave's Corned Beef Melt. Holyyyyy yummy! The corned beef was super tender, there was a generous amount of melty pepper jack cheese, and the horseradish sauce added the perfect zing. Our server was friendly, but not super attentive. Nothing major, just something to note. There's a small parking lot, otherwise it's street parking. Overall, such a great experience--and that patio alone is worth coming back for, especially because I don't live too far from here!

Another successful day at McGovern's for hockey day our 3rd year and had great service throughout the day drinks were plentiful and the food is always good. See you again next year!

Very tasty and would go again for sure! Well priced and the beef special was so warming on a cold day. Also got the beet salad which was excellent.

Joe- bartender was so quick with attending to us. He was very nice. Bar smells like an old bar... has that sour smell. Saw a mouse run behind the bar I didn't make it out to the patio but friends that I was with said it's very nice. It's a fun bar. Had their own parking lot which is a bonus for downtown

    Meatloaf

Fabulous food and drink, was packed both days I went but still managed to get a seat at the bar lots of sports on but still manageable to have a conversation will def visit when I'm in town again!

McGovern's on a Monday? Yes, please. Purse/Yeti bingo with the gals, martini in hand (stuffed with blue cheese olives made to order by Brittany, the queen of servers), and enough TVs and pull tabs to keep the party rolling. Cozy fireplace? Check. Killer spinach artichoke dip and a Reuben that will ruin all other Reubens for you? Double check. Saint Paul vibes at their finest-this is the spot for laughs, drinks, and making Monday feel like Friday.

    Walleye Sandwich with Potato Salad
    Steve K.

First stop when I visit Minneapolis/St Paul! My company is based in the Twin Cities, so I fly back there every month. My flight always lands around lunchtime, so I jump in the rental car and drive to Patrick McGovern's in downtown St Paul! Entree: Walleye Sandwich ($19.50). I've tried several of their Irish dishes and they are authentic (I lived in Ireland for almost a year), but I keep coming back for the Walleye! Perfectly grilled, on a grilled Hoagie bun. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! The Sandwich does come with a Side. I've tried all five (Fries, Cole Slaw, Potato Salad, Cottage Cheese, Chips). Skip the Cole Slaw! Potato Salad is my choice. Chips are similar to kettle baked, so they're good. Cottage Cheese is hard to screw up, and Fries are decent. I'm deducting a STAR because the Sides are not that special. Service: Always fast, attentive, and friendly! Ambiance: It's a HUGE place with indoor and outdoor seating--and even in winter, the outdoor seating is completely covered and cozy. The waterfall outside the west windows is nice. Parking: I'm GIVING BACK A STAR because they have their own free parking lot. Parking in downtown St Paul can be a hassle and expensive. Overall: I stop here every month, so obviously, I give them my HIGHLY RECOMMENDED rating!

My friends and I visited McGoverns for st paddy's day celebrations this year and it was definitely the place to be! We got there early (3pm ish) so that we could get a table which definitely helped because the bar got CROWDED as the day went on. Drinks were reasonably priced. It was a bit hard to order drinks once it got busier, but I don't think that's out of the ordinary for bars on a holiday. We got hungry mid afternoon and ordered some food as well. We were pleasantly surprised how good it all was! The mozzarella sticks were crunchy and had a great cheese pull, and the chicken tenders with fries were whole chicken breast served with a side of bbq sauce. The bar space itself had lots of space with multiple different rooms (including a terrace area and a tent). Super fun and will be back next year!

Yes, great place, they had a fire a few days ago ago, but we're open and functioning perfectly! I had the Cher Buger and it was great! The service was top notch! The food was great and timely as we are headed to the wild game!! We were seated on the second floor with a great view of 7th street!

This place does get busy so definitely keep that in mind. Luckily I made reservations ahead of time so we had a table waiting for us, otherwise we would have been put on a waiting list since it's a small space. They put us in a corner booth which was nice and spacious enough for 4 people so I'd definitely recommend asking for a booth verse a table if you're planning to come with a larger group. The servers are all very friendly and helpful. I appreciated their attentiveness and sharing what they like best, especially for what's in season based on the time of year. The menu has quite a bit of variety too which is sometimes unexpected when you come to a pub-style location. For appetizers we got Onion Ring and Fried Pickles. They were both really good and served with dipping sauces. Definitely both shareable items so if you're in a group they'd be great options! My entree I chose the Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon served with lemon soy marinade, creamy cucumbers, and jasmine rice -- it was SO good!! I loved the creaminess of the cucumbers especially with the rice and than the lemon soy marinade was just a unique touch to the salmon. Toned the flavors down without overpowering acidity. And the salmon was so dreamy, a beautiful pink color that you just knew it wasn't a farm raised salmon. Plus the portion was very generous!! I'd definitely recommend the Alaskan Sockeye Salmon to anyone interested in visiting here. #eatwildsavewild The only negatives (which are more so just knowledge bombs for you): * Restaurant is VERY loud. It's hard to hear because it is one small room that everyone plus the bar is in. I wished I would have took a picture to show what I mean. Just know that if it's an intimate setting you're looking for this is not the place. So be prepared to talk loudly over the loudness and ask "excuse me?" or "repeat that" many times throughout your visit because you're not going to hear everything. * Timed eating. Because this place is a hit with limited seating, once you get a table and complete your meal/payment you'll kindly be asked to leave so that they can clean up and open the table to next in line. Totally get that and am not put off by this at all, but I could see how it could catch some folks off guard especially if you are out for a meal with folks you may not see frequently-- so just keep that in mind. This is not the place to sit and talk post meal. * Parking is limited. Be prepared to walk a few blocks as the road parking in front of the business is pretty limited especially with the other stores and restaurants in the area. Regardless of those few bullets I highly recommend folks visit George & The Dragon. It's a really cool spot and the food was great! Plus theirs a malt shop right next door that looks yummy too, so definitely worth visiting and getting malts after for dessert.

But as the new owners have taken over, things shifted. Generally it was fine but in the last couple months things have gone downhill. The last straw was when I went in for a single drink with a friend, early in the evening and when we got our tabs, we filled out our receipts and left our tips and went on with our evening. The next morning, I was called by my bank about a suspicious tip amount that I had recently left (aka the evening before). These cheapskate cheaters and thieves working at the bar had changed my tip amount egregiously. On one single pint, I think I paid $7/$8? And my tip amount was over $30 making my one beer almost $40. If that is what tappers has become, it is no longer that quaint and unique neighborhood dive bar that Chris and Steve had bought back in the early 2010s.
