Patio

I've been to Sweeney's twice now, and I want to love it so bad! My friend speaks highly of this neighborhood bar/restaurant, but each time I've been pretty disappointed. The wings are overhyped, and my vodka soda was watery. My friend's burger was dry, and you have to pay an extra $1 for cheese?! We were served salsa instead of marinara with our cheese curds, and it look forever to get it corrected. The service was slow altogether, but it seems to be better when sitting on the patio (like I did last time). Speaking of the patio, it's the main reason I'd come back again. It's a cozy little oasis :)

The Visit St. Paul Patio Passport program took me here. We did sit on the patio & it was a cool chill vibe. It was literally like a backyard/courtyard. We decided to just grab drinks. I got a drink and a shot. The shot was really good, it was called the Love Bomb the drinks were decent overall. The waitress was pretty attentive and nice. Not sure if the parking lot across the street belongs to them but we parked there and it was very convenient for us otherwise it was pretty busy in the area for street parking.

Went here for a private event and loved the place! We were on the second floor which was so nice and has a great space for a buffet and an area that would make a great dance floor. Bartender gave good recommendations for drinks, prompt and kind service, and kept the area clean throughout the event. The food we had was simple but tasty and the first floor had gotten pretty full by about 10. Good options for drinks on tap and chill vibe, I would recommend this place.

Chicken dumpling soup...yum!!

Stopped in on a cold snowy evening for dinner with friends. Nice atmosphere and comfortable seating. Great and knowledgeable wait staff. I ordered the soup first -which was chicken and dumplings. It was just like my grandma used to make! It was delicious and thick and creamy and the dumplings were so light and fluffy. I also ordered the 1/4# burger which , unfortunately was a huge disappointment! It came with cold fries and even though I ordered the burger medium, it was way over cooked and dry. The massive pile of lettuce on the burger also made it chilled. I know they can do better and maybe the 1/2# is the way to go.

It's a great little neighborhood bar! The dark ambiance is of the cozy variety, and the staff are willing to help out (even if you do show up with a large group--just tip generously, okay?). The drinks were normal and the food was solid bar fare. I'd swing by Sweeney's again!

Came for drinks, and it was a good night. Nice ambiance with great oldies music. The service was great and I never felt like I wasn't being served. My drink was okay. My only complaint was that given the price of drinks my drink was too much mixer and no alcohol. Overall, besides the drink, Sweeney's Saloon is a nice bar to go with friends and have a good time.

Scan for the menu! Menu had lots of great options.

Terrible service and experience. Been coming here for around 20 years. Won't return. Tacos are still good.

George & The Dragon - Victoria Salad and Caprese Toastie made for a perfect dinner!

George & The Dragon is a super cool restaurant that my hubby and I tried for a double date night…read morewith our friends. We came on a Monday night at 6:15pm. This place does get busy so definitely keep that in mind. Luckily I made reservations ahead of time so we had a table waiting for us, otherwise we would have been put on a waiting list since it's a small space. They put us in a corner booth which was nice and spacious enough for 4 people so I'd definitely recommend asking for a booth verse a table if you're planning to come with a larger group. The servers are all very friendly and helpful. I appreciated their attentiveness and sharing what they like best, especially for what's in season based on the time of year. The menu has quite a bit of variety too which is sometimes unexpected when you come to a pub-style location. For appetizers we got Onion Ring and Fried Pickles. They were both really good and served with dipping sauces. Definitely both shareable items so if you're in a group they'd be great options! My entree I chose the Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon served with lemon soy marinade, creamy cucumbers, and jasmine rice -- it was SO good!! I loved the creaminess of the cucumbers especially with the rice and than the lemon soy marinade was just a unique touch to the salmon. Toned the flavors down without overpowering acidity. And the salmon was so dreamy, a beautiful pink color that you just knew it wasn't a farm raised salmon. Plus the portion was very generous!! I'd definitely recommend the Alaskan Sockeye Salmon to anyone interested in visiting here. #eatwildsavewild The only negatives (which are more so just knowledge bombs for you): * Restaurant is VERY loud. It's hard to hear because it is one small room that everyone plus the bar is in. I wished I would have took a picture to show what I mean. Just know that if it's an intimate setting you're looking for this is not the place. So be prepared to talk loudly over the loudness and ask "excuse me?" or "repeat that" many times throughout your visit because you're not going to hear everything. * Timed eating. Because this place is a hit with limited seating, once you get a table and complete your meal/payment you'll kindly be asked to leave so that they can clean up and open the table to next in line. Totally get that and am not put off by this at all, but I could see how it could catch some folks off guard especially if you are out for a meal with folks you may not see frequently-- so just keep that in mind. This is not the place to sit and talk post meal. * Parking is limited. Be prepared to walk a few blocks as the road parking in front of the business is pretty limited especially with the other stores and restaurants in the area. Regardless of those few bullets I highly recommend folks visit George & The Dragon. It's a really cool spot and the food was great! Plus theirs a malt shop right next door that looks yummy too, so definitely worth visiting and getting malts after for dessert.

With bars on every floor and an outdoor patio that feels like half the city decided to pop 'round, it's the kind of place where "just one pint" turns into a full-blown social expedition. For more than 30 years, this downtown British pub has been the city's unofficial living room--on game days, the crowd spills onto the sprawling patio, where sports enthusiasts gather around the giant outdoor screen like moths to a very rowdy flame. This pub has perfected the art of feeding a crowd--especially when it comes to their fan-favourite burgers and dangerously delicious white cheddar mac and cheese. The burgers are bold and satisfying, the mac is creamy and crave-worthy, and every dish arrives courtesy of a team so attentive you'll wonder if they've secretly known you for years. But as the new owners have taken over, things shifted. Generally it was fine but in the last couple months things have gone downhill. The last straw was when I went in for a single drink with a friend, early in the evening and when we got our tabs, we filled out our receipts and left our tips and went on with our evening. The next morning, I was called by my bank about a suspicious tip amount that I had recently left (aka the evening before). These cheapskate cheaters and thieves working at the bar had changed my tip amount egregiously. On one single pint, I think I paid $7/$8? And my tip amount was over $30 making my one beer almost $40. If that is what tappers has become, it is no longer that quaint and unique neighborhood dive bar that Chris and Steve had bought back in the early 2010s. The icing on the top was that one of the owners was actually our bar tender that evening. Slimey and shady and when we called to inquire, we were hung up on. Let this place go back to the dogs. At least the drunks and townies that used to call Tappers their neighborhood pub weren't stiffing the customers.

Suburban Reliability and the Bartender's Handshake: A Night at Lucky 13…read moreIn the manicured landscape of Mendota Heights, Lucky 13 serves as a reliable suburban anchor, offering a communal atmosphere that bridges the gap between a casual family eatery and a seasoned neighborhood pub. It is an establishment of high floors and occasional ceilings, where the experience is dictated by a mix of classic Minnesota staples and surprising, sophisticated pours. The culinary offerings during my visit were a landscape of hits and minor frustrations. The kitchen provides a complimentary bowl of popcorn that is, quite frankly, addictive--the kind of salty, buttery overture that makes the wait for an entrée entirely palatable. The Greek salad, too, was an exercise in generosity; it arrived as a sizeable, vibrant mountain of produce that could easily stand as a meal in itself. However, the "dumpling soup" suffered from a crisis of identity. One expects a certain structural integrity from such a dish, but the dumplings were so sparse they felt like an afterthought. What was presented was essentially a decent chicken soup, leaving the diner to search the broth for the namesake heart of the meal. Compounding the evening's minor setbacks, the bar had unfortunately run dry of Blue Moon on tap--a staple of the craft-adjacent world that was conspicuously missing from the evening's roster. The most sophisticated discovery at Lucky 13, however, is the presence of Fernet-Branca. Finding this intensely bitter amaro in a suburban strip mall is a "good send" indeed. Originally formulated in 1845 by Bernardino Branca in Milan, Fernet was first marketed as a medicinal tonic--a cure for everything from cholera to nervous ailments. Its recipe remains a closely guarded secret, a dark infusion of nearly 30 herbs and spices including saffron, myrrh, and chamomile. Over the decades, it has evolved from a digestive aid into the "bartender's handshake," the cult-status spirit of choice for industry insiders who appreciate its unapologetic, medicinal punch. The room maintains its local charm with a healthy selection of pull tabs, inviting a bit of low-stakes drama to the table. And in a nod to the basic civilities that often go overlooked, the restrooms were maintained with a surgical cleanliness that reflects well on the overall management of the house. Lucky 13 is not without its eccentricities--the soup may be light on dumplings and the taps may occasionally run dry--but the presence of a sizeable salad and a bottle of Fernet makes it a worthy port of call in Mendota Heights.
