Dining out in the shadow of the pandemic and nationwide labor shortages can be an exercise in patience. Things just don't work the way they did pre 2020. For the time being we all must just get used to experiencing unpleasant bumps in the road to enjoying dinner out with family or friends, or solo.
My family used to dine with regularity at Pasta Amore, the venerable Rockbrook Italian dining spot that dates back to 1986. After parents passed on we just stopped going, for reasons I can't explain. Since that time the restaurant remodeled and changed owners, but the basics remained: quality Italian inspired food at reasonable prices, in a convivial atmosphere, with ample seating both indoors as well as on their spacious front patio.
We decided to return after a long absence after perusing their menu online, which is large and features dozens of somewhat upscale dishes, with a slant toward pastas, chicken and seafood.
Our Sunday evening visit saw us seated as requested out on the patio. One look at the single page "Sunday Menu" was a bit of a sucker punch, unfortunately, as we were advised that on Sundays the restaurant runs a limited menu, focusing on family dinners with shared entrees and appetizers. This change was not mentioned on their web page, and upon asking we were advised by the host that we could not order anything other than from the restrictive Sunday menu. No seafood pastas, for example. It was a bit of a letdown to be sure. But we aren't picky eaters so we adjusted our playbook, and instead ordered a calamari appetizer, then chicken piccata and meat lasagna. Soups or salads were included with each main course.
The bumps continued as my soup arrived less than hot. Complimentary bread and butter was also served and it was delicious. After first courses were finished we waited for the calamari to arrive. It didn't..... until after our main dishes were presented. Turns out our server neglected to turn the calamari order into the kitchen. He apologized and offered to comp it, as well as my glass of wine.
My piccata was plated beautifully and the mix of roasted veggies and chicken was tasty. However my husband's lasagna was served lukewarm and with no sauce. It looked unappetizing...something I never thought I would say about a plate of meat lasagna. Upon complaining it was removed and 10 minutes later replaced with a plate of hot, sauced lasagna. Trouble was, I was completely finished with my meal before the lasagna arrived back at the table. That is always awkward.
The calamari, once it arrived, was very good. My husband filled up on it while his lasagna was being re-imaged.
A nice lady (not our waiter) cleared empty plates from our table and filled our water glasses. I advised her of our general dissatisfaction with the way the evening was going, and she summoned Frankie, the manager. He heard our complaints, and expressed genuine interest in what we had to say. Frankie mentioned their problems with being short staffed, but said it was not meant to serve as an excuse. He said he needed to hear from customers when there was a problem, in order to learn from mistakes and not repeat them. We were both impressed by his attitude. Too often managers get defensive when problems are brought to their attention. Frankie was professional, and it made a world of difference. He then comped our entire meal, including the tiramisu dessert we hadn't yet ordered (I recommend it!).
What would have been a 3 star review became a 4 star because of the way the management reacted to our concerns. We will give them another shot as obviously a restaurant with such a good pedigree is capable of greatness when things are running as they typically do. read more
