A few months back I bought the Benjamin Moore paint in Smoke. I had used this color in the past and loved it. But something is off on the Benjamin Moore calibration machines because the color I received is not the true smoke color. Picture provided shows the one on the right to be a powdery light blue rather than the color on the left which is the true smoke color. When I brought the can back to the store Ray told me that some of the Benjamin Moore colors were coming out wrong. He was willing to take the paint back - until I shared I had waited two months to paint. Problem #1, it did not matter if I waited 30 days or 60 days to paint. The Benjamin Moore calibration of color was off. They should stand behind their product. Ray even told me I could not re-buy the paint because the machine would still produce the wrong color. Problem #2, Ray took my name and number and said they would call me to resolve the problem. They have never called. It has been 10 days. Benjamin Moore and Catalina paint did not stand behind their word to call nor their product quality. That is a lack of integrity and very poor customer service. Thankfully I was able to go to another company altogether and have them color match it beautifully.

They are well stocked with supplies. There is a table to spread stuff out on that really comes in handy when comparing color swatches and taking photos of possible combinations. Best of all, the staff are so friendly, helpful, and down to earth. If you need to quietly browse over and over (paint is so tricky to get right), they give you the space to do that. If you need a lot of hands-on help, they will absolutely do that too. One time I came in with such a long list of specific color chips to find. Two people went to work pulling the chips for me. The lids are too flimsy and deform easily.I have 20 years old Dunn Edwards cans that still seal perfectly. 4. I went there to see if they would give me a new can for the half gallon of trim paint I had left. They would not. Even if I bought another gallon. 5.On another occasion I came in to get a gallon matched, and even though there was only one person ahead of me, they said it would take half an hour. I left and went to home Depot and probably got it in half that time including the drive. 6. The color match for the trim paint was off. 7. Despite all the foregoing, I still liked the paint better than Behr. It was glossier, went on smoother with fewer brush marks so I kept going back. The final straw was that the nice looking paint now looks like crap after only 2 years, it's peeling in multiple places on the window sills. It appears to have let the water get under it and it's lifting and peeling. I have to redo the window sills after only 2 years. The next gallon is going to be Behr.

The staff at Ganahl are super helpful and un-intimidating for new-to-the-scene DIYers. If you have no idea what you need (other than the dimensions), definitely check them out before you head to a big box store. They even have regular hardware items and paint in addition to a great selection of lumber and MDF. Ganahl will rip down what you need, and will do up to 5 (I think) additional cuts, charging a nominal amount per cut. I drive a regular car and had to get help cutting down 2x4, 1x4, and plywood sheets to fit in the car. Protip: they offer delivery for items you don't want to cut, too. Happy Ganahl exists. Went to have a painting framed, that I've had since the 90's…read more It was done by a family member and I am quite fond of it. A pretty good reproduction of an original Gauguin that happens to be in a nearby Pasadena art museum. Well, we paid a visit to Hobby Lobby, as we were picking up some things from nearby Whole Foods. The store occupies Sear's old location on Foothill. It's a huge place and designed to get you to walk around for things as signage isn't plentiful or helpful. Shelves are high so unless you are very tall you need to search around, guess they took that cue from Costco, it works if you aren't in a hurry. We were happy to find they had a framing department and also a fabric area, which, since the sad closing of JoAnne's, I was glad to see for the ghost of my mother who enjoyed sewing. I'm focusing on the Framing department and the friendly efficient gentleman in charge of that department, his name is Theo. He was helpful and friendly from the start. Their framing prices are posted as 50% off, which sounded great, but I guess the original prices need to be considered before seeing this as a good deal. Well, we checked on one style which had always been our original style we felt appropriate for this art work. We visited Tahiti a couple of years ago and and saw some Gaugain copies framed in a similar style, it works very well, so we inquired as to cost and estimated the size as we didn't have the painting with us. It was very reasonable compared to the frame shops we have checked over the decades, yes, decades! It was a very fair price, not knowing the quality of the work was something to consider, but Theo was very efficient and knew his products and was very meticulous. We could tell we were in very good hands. We were quoted, less the 50%, a little under $100 before tax. A very fair price. We were given a "finish by date", and 5 days before that date I gave a call to check on status, I was told it would be done in a couple of days. I was surprised and happy to receive a message later that day from Theo that our framing job was finished and available for pick up. We got over there that evening and Though Theo was gone then, a nice young lady got our finished product for us. It looked very nice. She walked us and the painting up to the lone cashier, as that is their policy, and we waited in line to pay. They did open another register as the line was about 6 people deep. I'm not going to get into their company politics, but over all it was a positive experience, especially thanks to Theo and his friendly, knowledgeable service and framing skill. Thanks Theo!
